    The Human Resource Manager of Southern Sun Hotel, Ikoyi, Mr. Cornelius Onwah,  has said that the hotel is transitioning from cost focused human resource services to experience focused human resource, effective for enhancing productivity, drive, adoption and delivery of differential customer experience.

    Onwah spoke on the importance of translating business quality management thinking into actionable steps by investing in the development of the hotel employees across all levels of the value chain. His words: ‘Staff training is one aspect of human resource development that the group takes very seriously and this has been demonstrated over the years through the learning interventions engaged upon by management. The Tsogo Sun  group  has a full-fledged training academy located in Johannesburg in South Africa and the responsibility of the Academy, apart from setting the standard for the learning culture of the entire group, ensures that skills are enhanced and up to date to meet the ever changing needs of the modern business traveler across the globe. In recognition of same, that is, the importance of learning to enhance the level of service given to our guests, management trained the entire contingent of the frontline staff comprising the front office and F&B department to a one week “First Impressions customer service training”. This training was so well received by the generality of the staff that, other departments are in the process of receiving same. Not done, all the supervisors in the hotel were again exposed to a 3 day intensive training session on “Effective Leadership”.

    On the issue of health and safety training for the staff in the light of the hotel being a hospitality outfit, Onwah said: “Our industry is indeed prone to daily health and safety hazards and we know that we cannot truly redefine customer experience on our premises if we do not first equip our employees with the adequate know how. Health and Safety is taken very seriously at Southern Sun Ikoyi and our staff from all departments is regularly trained all through the year on Basic First Aid, CPR and AED training to help the generality of staff in the event of emergencies.

    “First Aiders at our hotel are retrained and recertified every two years to enable utmost functionality in their capabilities. Our Food and Beverage department particularly received further training for an additional 2weeks on this. We also know that imparting knowledge is a skill and so Trainers at the hotel are also frequently trained in dedicated trainer courses for efficiency”.

    Southern Sun Hotel, Ikoyi, has said that the hotel would continue to pay greater attention to impeccable service delivery to its clientele as a way of sustaining its leading position in Nigeria’s hospitality market.

  • Southern Sun treats guests to Braised Lamb Shanks in Herbs Jus

    Alex Mwaura, the Executive Chef at Southern Sun Hotel, Ikoyi, Lagos  recently shared one of his recipes for the hotel. The special delicacy, the Braised Lamb Shanks in Herbs Jus

    is a popular delicacy  familiar to many who are used to  dining at the hotel’s restaurant for in-house dining or the popular Sunday Brunch at the on Sundays.

    Speaking on the meal, he said Shanks are cut out of lamb hide leg in the middle just below the bulk meat and they are popular for their diligent succulent lamb taste and were traditionally done in clay pot for hours slowly which made them become a story telling dish during celebration times as people wait for it to cook.

    He said: “Shanks are mostly served as a dinner meal with red wine especially crispy ones which can also be added to the meal while cooking to enhance flavor

    “Lamb is a rich source of protein and vitamin B12 which helps in formation of blood. It’s also a very good source of iron but always trim any fat around as it’s also high in cholesterol.”

    Chef Alex over  Mwaura , a graduate of the famous Kenyan, Utali College, has over 27 years of culinary experience and as Executive Chef for 15years now in over five countries.

    Southern Sun holds 2015 Offshore Challenge

    The Southern Sun Ikoyi-sponsored 2015 Annual Offshore Challenge held recently at the Lagos Yacht Club. The event has, over the years, become a popular event on the club’s annual sailing competition calendar. This year’s challenge was no exception with 21 participating boats in various categories of the Lightning Fleet, Hobbie Fleet and Combined Monohull amidst others, fiercely competing for this year’s winning positions.

    The annual sailing event has a goal of reigniting a passion for sports and wellbeing within its community. In addition to winning awards amongst other exciting prizes, Ubong Nseobot Sales and PR Manager Southern Sun Ikoyi said at the beginning of the day’s activities: “If Mother Nature cooperates, then we expect a very strong and exciting competition amongst this year’s participants as they try to break existing records and set new ones”.

    With clear-cut winners later emerging in each category, David Kruyt, Commodore of the Lagos Yacht Club, expressed delight in the competition stating “this has been yet another record year for us judging by the quality of the annual sponsorship by Southern Sun Ikoyi. We also greatly congratulate the fantastic sailors for their enthusiasm in promoting this sporting challenge by putting in their best efforts and energy in giving us a special race”.
