  • Southern Nigeria Peoples’ Congress meeting in Akure: The grapes are sour

A senior citizen in Ekiti State, Chief Deji Fasuan, criticises members of the Southern Nigeria Peoples’ Congress’ position on President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-graft war.

I was amused to see the report and picture of the nebulous body called Southern Nigeria Peoples’ Congress in some national papers of 26th August, 2015.  This fire brigade, self–serving organization exposes much of the Nigerian character; when we are having things our way we laugh and relax.  When things are slipping- by, we cry foul.  Going by the screaming headlines reporting the outcome of the meeting – “Anti-graft war, lopsided appointment; Gbonigi, Ekwueme, Clark, others slam Buhari,” the Conferees deserve some pity.

The crux of their grouse are political and senior management appointments hitherto made by the Buhari administration, observing that these appointments have not being fair (to whom they did not tell us), and asking Buhari to respect the configuration of the Nigerian polity.  Pray, when did the concept of Southern Nigeria Assembly start?

Obviously many things escaped the knowledge or memory of the participants especially those from the South West.  Have we, in the West, forgotten so easily our misfortune of the last five years when the federal government administered the country as if our Region was not part of it?

I have written on two occasion drawing attention of Nigerians to the apparent imbalance if not outright discrimination in the appointments to first and secondary levels of political positions and most importantly to executive and management positions in the MDAs especially the Agencies.  I told Nigerians that vital government positions in these sectors were lopsided in favour of the South South and South East.  I even posted the figures as follows – South South  and South East.  I even posted the figures as follows – South South and South East and 70% North  Central, North West and North East about 25 to 27% and South West just about 2%.  Was    there a Southern Assembly called to pontificate on this during those unfortunate years? Did anybody in the Northern zone gang together to accuse the South South and South East of foisting themselves on the Nigerian nation? Where were these do-gooders in Akure when the almighty Ayim Pius Ayim stood like a rock of Gibraltar against Yoruba interest? Are our Yoruba leaders aware that public service  appointments notably in the Ministry of Power and its agencies and indeed many other MDAs were still being rushed almost hours before the new administration took over? Did the Federal Character Commission blink an eye to these infractions? There are many more questions to answer.

Looking at the photograph in one of the papers of 26th August 2015, I observed that Bishop Gbonigi is a “fish out of water”.  A fish rightly belongs to water, but when it is on dry ground it becomes and uncomfortable being indeed!  The revered Bishop known for transparency and total commitment to equity and fairness shares very little with the likes of Edwin Clark, the super godfather of the last administration and all it’s stood for.  A pontiff of no mean order, he bestrew the Nigerian political administrative and economic firmament for close to 5 years. A colossus who shared fundamentals of life with Asari Dokubo including resource control and power conscription, he did not let go throughout the last 5 years. Most politicians of the South South and the South East regularly echoed these positions. One may asked, what is their grouse today? Indeed the grapes are sour!

Reading through the information contained in the write up, there are familiar names like Dr. Kunle Olajide, Chief Bode Ajewole, Chief Ebenezer Babatola and Prof. Olu Agbi, among others. For obvious reasons I don’t want to make any remark about these, but sufficient to say that the situation in Nigeria deserves a deep study. As for Kunle, my close associate and collaborator in Ekiti State, I wish he was not drafted to such a forum. Now to talk the fact, how many appointments has Buhari made to start making the inappropriate accusation of lopsidedness or unfairness?

I don’t remember in all my years when ‘Southern Nigerian Assembly’ took a sustainable position regarding the administration of Nigerian nation state. The involvement of the Ondo State Governor is not surprising. It is pursuance of his new found love – struggling for leadership in Nigeria. While I wish him goodluck in this legitimate pursuit, I want to remind the aggressive governor that he is a Westerner, a Yoruba man before he becomes anything or everything later.

I remember in the late 50’s and early 60’s that on the rare occasion that Azikiwe and Awolowo struck a deal on how to confront what they called the ‘Feudal North,’ the joint position usually changed barely 24 hours after the misguided accord. This was usually because the leader from the Eastern Region would not opt for collaboration with what was yesterday a feudal North, ‘in the national interest.’ Was Awolowo naïve all this time? At first he was trusting and later on he stood his ground for principles which he followed faithfully throughout his political career.  In fairness to Azikiwe, he was more pragmatic and realistic to know that Nigeria can never be ruled successfully with political affiliations horizontally but vertically.

The last five years taught us a lasting lesson. The Nigerian nation is a collection of nationalities and therefore of interests. Its administration must reflect this for us to survive and to male a mark on the continent.

Lagos Yacht Club recently held the fourth edition of its annual boat completion, Southern Sun Ikoyi Hotel Off shore Challenge. The annual event sponsored by the Southern Sun Ikoyi Hotel is an opportunity for members of the club to engage in boat competition and celebrate the aquatic endowment of Lagos.

The general manager of the Southern Sun Ikoyi said the hosting of the event is part of the efforts to give back to the society and also use the platform as an opportunity to network and wrap up business. He said: “In all, 24 boats participated in the challenge. At the end of the event prizes were awarded for winners while others enjoy an idyllic evening out on the bank of the Lagos lagoon. Eight actually finished the course and I think they should be congratulated for doing that. Among the hobbies in the third place with boat number 1228, Blow Jeep,”

In this year’s edition, the sailors had it a little rough as the hitherto favourable wind changed, making it difficult for the sailors, despite that; they still had a wonderful day. After the boats returned back to the club, prizes were awarded to the winners.

The Southern Sun General manager, Mr. Mark Snoxley spoke on his company’s sponsorship of the competition: “The company is very sports orientate. It is for business purposes mostly for PR and marketing. We basically do this for business networking.

And we will always support that.  Today’s event was a success although it has its own challenges because of the weather. We know that at some point, the people that sailed off just didn’t have an enough wind to return. I think it was exciting event to watch as it also exposes us to that other challenges the seamen actually comes across when they are offshore . It was a success because everybody came back safe and we are happy to see that everybody is happy.”

  • Southern Sun celebrates Nigerian cuisines

    Southern Sun celebrates Nigerian cuisines

Southern Sun Hotel, Ikoyi, one of the hotels under the Tsogo Sun Group, has said the hotel is paying  special attention to provide its guests with top culinary experience.

In a recent chat with travel journalists, the hotel Assistant Executive Chef, Mr. Stanley Mwangi, said since inception, the hotel made dining experience one of the most important areas to focus on. Consequently, the hotel’s management went the extra mile to put together a restaurant that would not only provide value for money satisfaction, but also a focal point external diners to come and have a distinctive culinary experience.

He said: “When we came, the first thing we did was to do our market survey and see what other people are offering. We tried to come out with something that is different from others and also something that many people would be interested in eating. So, we tried to bring in more of intercontinental food and more of Nigerian food taking into consideration that most of our guests are Nigerians. So, we have a lot of Nigerian food, a lot intercontinental food and we tried to infuse Chinese dishes.

“So, what you expect from us is that when you come here you have a good meal to eat. Anybody from anywhere, when you come in, you will get something that you would be very comfortable to eat. We have everything for everybody. We have a lot of variety. We also import food from everywhere to make sure that we have food outside the box. Our philosophy is to make sure that we have food to carter for everybody.”

The hotel’s Sunday buffet, called Sunday Brunch, has become popular among many families. Mwangi explained the concept and success of the brunch: “What we do is that we have a team of local chefs to call to a meeting and we come out with something that people would eat. For example, I have seen people talk about ikokore. It is something that is a delicacy of people from a particular place. If, for example, you come to our restaurant and you find it in the buffet, you will be impressed. You will want to come back again the next time. So, we try to incorporate cuisines from all over. We are not only doing cuisines from a particular area, we are doing cuisines from all over and individual specialties from different  parts.

“So, after our meetings and agreement on the kind of meals we want to offer for the Sunday Brunch, by Friday, we go and buy the things  to prepare the meals.

“Also, there are other things that we do that have made it popular. We try to incorporate all sorts of continental things that are although popular, but may not be easily available.”

He said the food philosophy of the hotel was to make sure that no matter where a guest is from, the guest would be at home with the hotel’s menu list.

He explained: “Let’s say from our ala carte and in-room dining, there are menus that are South African food so that when they are here, they will be happy.  We also have food from Kenyan, Indian recipes and so on. We always tell our guests that if you think that we have something that we can cook for you, just tell us. We have some Indian  recipes on the menu because most Indians are vegetarians, so we try to carter for that, not just Indians but for anybody who may not be an Indian but are vegetarians.”

  • Attacks: Any reprieve for Southern Kaduna?

Attacks: Any reprieve for Southern Kaduna?

The people are becoming disenchanted. Where will help come from, and when? Gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen raid and kill residents of southern Kaduna State with impunity. The residents are tense and growing increasingly hopeless. Many cannot sleep with two eyes closed.

Many believe that the state government is not doing enough to protect them and their communities.

Even though the state government has continued to assure them of their safety, the recent attack in Sanga Local Government Area which lasted for about one week despite a curfew imposed on the area probably indicates that there is more to the attacks than meets the eye.

Tension is growing in the area, culminating in the youths of the area staging a peaceful protest to the palace of the Chief of Kagoro, Ufuwai Bonat, who is also the chairman of the Southern Kaduna Traditional Rulers Council,  to express their disappointment and worries.

Even though the first class traditional ruler refused to see them or take their letter, they presented their grievances to the media, accusing the Kaduna State government of doing practically nothing to protect them. According to them, the state governor, Mukthar Ramalan Yero showed no modest regard for victims of several attacks in the area, pointing out that at the moment, they have lost confidence in the  state government “which is seemingly unperturbed by the continued decimation of our people and the destruction of their means of livelihood.”

They want the federal government to declare a state of emergency in the area, believing that it will help address the insecurity in the area. Many people in the area, including the umbrella body of the southern Kaduna people, the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union also want the federal government to establish a military base in the area. According to them, the declaration of a state of emergency in Southern Kaduna is imperative to stem the tide of invasion by armed fulani herds men who have killed many people and destroyed homes and crops.

In the letter which they had intended to present to their traditional rulers, the youth argued that there was no difference between the massive killings and destruction going on in the southern part of Kaduna and the situations in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states which are currently under a state of emergency as a result of the deadly activities of the Boko Haram sect.

Vincent Bodam, spokesman of the youths said they were facing serious threats of total elimination by the Fulani herdsmen, adding that the latest  invasion of  rural communities in Sanga Local Government Area of the state,  where several people were killed and their homes and farms destroyed by Fulani militias was unacceptable and called on the government to take urgent steps to put an end to the killings.

“We do not see any difference between the mass killings in our area and those carried out in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states where a state emergency was declared,” they said. “Your Royal Highness, we implore you to pass on this plea on to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Jonathan to immediately declare a state of emergency in Kaduna state until normalcy is restored, considering that our people at this point in time, have lost confidence in the government in the state which is seemingly unperturbed by the continued decimation of our people and the destruction of their means of livelihood,” the group stated in the letter.

They advocated for the formation of Southern Kaduna Vigilante Service (SKAVIS) to boost the lean effort of the military in tackling the security challenges facing the southern Kaduna people, saying “Borno state has a civilian JTF, and South Western States have the OPC, to enforce security and provide useful intelligence to rightful authorities, it would be very unfair for government to deny, or frustrate southern Kaduna peoples from forming such a body,” Bodam said.

The youth also gave an indication that political leaders in the area may be in for a tough time, accusing them of not bringing their plight before the world, casting a vote of no confidence on them. They also believe that the government should be asked to “take responsibility for their failure to curb the ongoing pogrom in Southern Kaduna being the Chief Security Officer of the state. For his snub to visit and have first-hand evidences of the violence against our people or show concern to our people, we feel late down and disenchanted. How can 147 sons and daughters of a state be killed in one fell swoop in Kaura villages, and a sitting governor would not go to see and speak to the aggrieved since February, and again about 200 have killed in mass invasions of Sanga villages, and the Governor does not have the moral courage to visit any of the affected places or persons? Our Royal father, to ameliorate the situation of the affected people, we appeal to you to set up a Southern Kaduna Relief Fund for Displaced Persons. This will go a long way to reduce the level of starvation, disease and mental trauma from the surviving victims. More so that this is happening during the farming season it signifies the untold hardship that is eminent in these affected villages the following year. His Royal Highness, we are watching with consternation the spirited, if not desperate attempt by poorly informed government officials to create new exclusive grazing vast lands for Fulani nomads and to resuscitate dormant ones in our area. Nigeria should not reward mindless murderers of innocent people and plunderers of our hard earned resources with the lands of the victims”.
