    • Party bigger than any individual, says Diri

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday inaugurated a caretaker committee to oversee the affairs of its Southsouth zone.

The party’s acting National Chairman Umar Damagum inaugurated the committee at PDP national secretariat in Abuja.

He pronounced the February 22 Southsouth congress of the party, which re-elected Chief Dan Orbih as its chairman, as dead on arrival.

“I want to use this opportunity to tell us that as far as this party is concerned, there was no congress or election in the Southsouth because the tenure of the zonal committee has expired and we still have a few weeks or a month or so to the zonal congresses.

“So, we find it necessary to come up with this caretaker committee,” Damagum said.

The caretaker committee has Chief Emmanuel Ogidi as its Chairman. Other members of the committee are: Chief Damiete Herbert-Miller (Secretary), Nicholas Ayuwa, Godwin Akpan Udonta, Mrs. Bekewei Ashanti, Mr. Idehen Ebomoyi, and Dame Vivian Ahanmisi.

Ogidi promised that the committee would discharge its responsibilities without any form of bias.

Gamagum advised PDP members to stop hobnobbing with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“I’ve noticed, maybe because of fears you sometimes find (PDP) leaders encouraging this present administration at the centre (APC). I find it really very disturbing. So, please and please, let’s be up and doing. Don’t fear anyone. Nigeria belongs to all of us,” he counselled the party members.

Also, Bayelsa State Governor Duoye Diri, who spoke on behalf of the four PDP governors in the Southsouth, said: “The inauguration today was seen as a good step in the right direction. However, this is coming on the heels of the fact that a lot of people have accused the APC-led Federal Government of destroying democracy… We have to look inwards; we have to first of all fix our own problems.

“It’s very easy for you to point these same fingers at people from outside, but what is happening within us?

“So, the PDP has to sit back and fix its own internal issues and challenges. That is only when you can stand up to compete with others. For me, I want the PDP to be competitive with other political parties.”
