I will declare my presidential ambition October 1 – Fayose

    Kashamu barred from PDP

Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, said on Monday he would declare his 2019 presidential ambition on October 1.

The governor stated this during the meeting of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South West leaders held in Ibadan, Oyo State.

He said: “It is my right to be President of Nigeria as a citizen of this country. I am educated and I have experience in politics. I am vast in public administration. The people want me. I will vie for the presidency under whatever circumstance. I will contest and I will prioritize the interest of the people.

“In fact, I will declare my ambition for the office of the President on October 1.

“We voted for APC and Muhammadu Buhari to give us good governance. They failed to give us good governance. So we will drive them out of power. The people want a person that will give them good governance. The people want comfort. Nigerians are hungry and are suffering and they don’t want to suffer again. We have to send them packing come 2019.”

He also expressed dismay at the Federal Government’s refusal allow him visit President Buhari in London, saying “the ruling party knew that he would come back to tell Nigerians the true state of the President’s health.”

Meanwhile, PDP leaders and stakeholders in South West have stopped all associations with Senator Buruji Kashamu.

Kashamu represents Ogun East Senatorial District.

He is also the former Chairman, National Mobilization Committee of the party.

The PDP southwest leaders said they have cut ties with the senator.

They also directed the leadership of the party in Ogun State to stop all dealings and meetings with Kashamu and his agents until further notice.

The meeting, which took place at the Civic Centre in Ibadan, was attended by PDP leaders in Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti and Lagos.

Those in attendance were – former Deputy National Chairman, South, Chief Bode George; former governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel; former deputy governor of Osun State, Sen. Iyiola Omisore; Dr. Saka Balogun; Sen. Olufemi Lanlehin; Elder Wole Oyelese, a former Southwest Zonal Chairman, Alh. Tajudeen Oladipo and Fayose.

Others were – former Minister of Police Affairs, Jelili Adesiyan, Sen. Hosea Agboola, Sen. Ayo Adeseun, Barr. Lowo Obisesan, Babatunde Oduyoye, Lekan Opadokun and Engr. Femi Babalola.

The leaders, who condemned Kashamu’s anti-party activities, also called for disciplinary actions against him for his roles in the party’s defeat in Ogun, Ondo and Edo States.

The Zonal Chairman, Dr. Eddy Olafeso, expressed joy at the Supreme Court’s verdict which confirmed Ahmed Markafi as authentic leader of the PDP, assuring that the party’s strength was back in the region.

He commended PDP leaders in the region for their support.

Fayose, who also spoke on the issue, said the party would win elections soon.

He stated: “All people that are destabilizing the peace in PDP, we must sanction them. Nobody is greater that this party. If you call yourself a leader and you are waging war against it, definitely you are an enemy of the party.

“So, our meeting resolved that we don’t want him again in our party. We are not ready to have anything to do with him again. We have directed all the states to stay clear from him.”

  • Southwest PDP begins reconciliation

    Southwest PDP begins reconciliation

Peace may return to the Southwest Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), following the decision of the party elders to reconcile aggrieved chieftains across the six states.
A reconciliation team, led by the former National Deputy Chairman, Chief Olabode George, will commence the tour of the states on january 19, it was learnt yesterday.
According to party sources, the founding fathers of the party in the region were taken aback by the electoral misfortune of the party and the protracted crisis that has hit the troubled chapters during last year’s congresses.
The PDP has been losing grip in the zone. Last year, it also lost the governorship election in Ondo State. There are fears that the state may also lose Ekiti State to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next governorship poll, unless steps are taken to unite the party in the state.
The leadership crisis in the opposition party has polarised the chapters. It was one of the factors that accounted for the party’s defeat in Ondo State.
In Lagos State, there is a war of attrition between the two factions, led by Hon. Goke Salvador and Segun Adewale. In Ogun State, there are three factions fighting for the sould of the party. In Ondo, Governor Olusegun Mimiko and Chief Jimoh Ibrahim are at loggerheads. In Ekiti, the Ogundipe camp is fighting Governor Ayodele Fayose. In Osun, aggrieved chieftains are protesting the imposition of ward and local government executives.

Southwest PDP rallies support for Ibrahim

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Southwest has urged  its  members in Ondo State to unite and work for the victory of the party’s governorship candidate, Jimoh Ibrahim, in the November 26 poll.

Southwest PDP Chairman Makanjuola Ogundipe, in a statement in Ado Ekiti, said members should put their differences behind and commence a serious campaign to sell Ibrahim and his running mate, Ebenezer Alabi, to the electorate.

Ogundipe maintained that Ibrahim remains the legally-recognised flag bearer for the Ondo governorship poll. He therefore appealed to all members to sink their differences and remain focused to ensure victory for the party.

He said: “The leadership of our great party in the Southwest congratulates Barr. Jimoh Ibrahim and Hon. Ebenezer Alabi as candidates for governor and deputy governor respectively to the coming governorship election in Ondo State

“We remind all that it is time for genuine members of our great party, particularly in Ondo State, to put the past behind them and support Ibrahim as the legally recognised candidate, having been validly nominated.

“As loyal party followers, it’s only expected that we support our party, so that the PDP in Ondo State can return to be stronger, both in service providing and unity in the interest of the people.

“Our democracy will deepen appreciably, like other advanced democracies, if associated institutions are religiously respected and obeyed by practitioners alike.

“Nowhere can players disobey rules and regulations and expect a rancour-free engagement; it’s as a result that Nigeria politics is still very much characterised with lawlessness and avoidable violence.

“The time for internal wrangling is gone; this is the time for serious and conscientious campaign work, as I return a verdict of no victor no vanquished.”

  • ‘Kashamu not qualified to lead Southwest PDP’

‘Kashamu not qualified to lead Southwest PDP’

Factional Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Hon. Sikirulai Ogundele, is worried about the future of the party. The former member of House of Assembly spoke on the protracted crisis, the reconciliation moves, and other partisan issues. Assistant Editor LEKE SALAUDEEN met him in Abeokuta.

What led to the factionalisation of the PDP in Ogun State?

You will recall the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was in power in Ogun State for eight years under Otunba Gbenga Daniel. During his tenure, governance was smooth, government was responsive and sensitive to the yearnings of the people and there was peace in the PDP. We started having problems when Buruji Kashamu came up with a deceit that was supported by Daniel. We found later that Kashamu was out to use our political fortunes to enrich his business interest through a diabolical organisation he called ‘Omo Ilu Foundation’. He forced many members of the party to take oath of allegiance to his leadership.

Later, he took the party leadership to court on certain issues. With the support of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, he had his way. He used court injunctions to take over the structure of the party. Kashamu later frustrated Obasanjo, Daniel and other notable leaders out of the party. I decided to remain in the PDP when Daniel moved to Progressive Party of Nigeria (PPN) and later Labour Party (LP). All along, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Dimeji Bankole, maintained a siddon look approach. That was how Kashamu hijacked the party from the authentic leaders.

Could that be the reason why the party lost the 2011 and 2015 general elections in the state?

Yes; we did not realise Kashamu came to use our electoral fortunes to further his business interest.  What Kashamu did to the PDP in Ogun was the height of deceit. In 2011, he started selling party tickets for political offices to the highest bidders. In 2015, we had the opportunity of regaining power in the state, but we could not capitalise on it because of the selfish interest of Kashamu. Like he did in 2011, he fixed prices for elective offices. Those who could afford to pay were given the tickets; it was a cash-and-carry business. He didn’t put into consideration the popularity of the candidates among the electorate. For instance, Kashamu foisted Bisola Clark, the wife of Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark on the Ogun Central Senatorial District as candidate. She’s an Egba woman, but not popular among the people. She doesn’t stay in Abeokuta. Still, Kashamu gave her the senatorial ticket at the expense of a popular candidate.

Why did the party organise three parallel congresses last year?

In order to put an end to Kashamu’s impunity, we the like minds in Ogun PDP decided to go back to the drawing board, by first identifying the problems. We realised that Kashamu had turned the party into his personal property and was using our political fortunes to entrench his business interest. We came together, we mobilised our members against the self-acclaimed leader. We formed a formidable team having Daniel and Hon. Ladi Adebutu, a member of the House of Representatives as leaders.

When we had enough members to fight the monster, we went ahead to conduct ward, local and state congresses. We went to court to challenge the Bayo Dayo-led state executive council that conducted the Kashamu group’s congress. The bone of contention was that the tenure of Bayo Dayo executive expired in February, 2015. So, it had no power to conduct congress in April 2015. We got ruling from Ogun State High Court, Abeokuta, in our favour. We appealed and applied for a stay of execution on the judgment given in favour of Kashamu group by Justice Buba of the Federal High Court, Lagos on the same issue.

But, the Kashamu group insists that it is the authentic leadership, based on a letter of recognition from the INEC. What is your reaction?

Our congress was recognised. We got a letter from the Makarfi-led caretaker committee of the PDP, recognising us as the authentic PDP in Ogun. The Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGIEC) recognised us as authentic state executive of the PDP. The commission studied both judgments and found that ours remain substantial. There was a judgment that barred the Kashamu group from conducting the congress. We would have initiated contempt charge against them, but for the sake of brotherhood. The letter purportedly written by INEC could be forged.

Do you have any working relationship with the Bankole faction?

Yes we have a working relationship. We are partners in progress. We have similar experience with Kashamu leadership. We are people of like minds. In fact, we worked together during the recent local government election.

Any move to resolve the crisis?

We have successfully won the hearts of the Bankole group. The reasonable ones among the Kashamu group are with us. Those that are not diabolically committed to “Omo Ilu” are also with us. We worked together for last Saturday’s local government election. We are extending our hands of fellowship to those that have taken the oath of allegiance to the Kashamu leadership; may God deliver them from the diabolical bondage of Kashamu. They should go to church or mosque to exorcise the evil spirit in them.

Why didn’t you attend the recent reconciliation meeting of the Southwest PDP held in Ibadan?

There is no sincerity of purpose in conveying that meeting. Kashamu was the convener. Since Kashamu was the person that organised the meeting, it is a meeting of deceit. I got the report of the meeting on my platform few hours ago.  The report states that the likes of Governors Olusegun Mimiko and Ayo Fayose, as well as Chief Bode George, did not attend. That those present criticised them and denounced their leadership of the party in the Southwest. It was also in the report that when Dimeji Bankole entered the hall, there was loud ovation that recognised his presence. That Bankole told the gathering that he was invited on phone by Alhaji Shuaib Oyedokun to attend the meeting and he suggested that a meeting that will embrace all party leaders in the zone should be organised. At this point, Chief Jimoh Ibrahim snatched the microphone from Bankole and announced that, henceforth, Kashamu is the Southwest leader of the PDP.

You can understand why I said the Ibadan meeting was a deceit. There can’t be reconciliation in the PDP, if it was not genuinely done. The PDP members in Ogun State are tired of Kashamu. Ogun is an elitist state. Kashamu can’t lead Ogun.  The likes of Kashamu can’t be a councillor in Egbaland, because of his dented image. He can’t lead our campaign; people will look at your leader and judge you. We are playing politics. We have the right to choose our leader.

In your view, what is the way forward for the PDP?

I believe in genuine reconciliation that will have a human face. Anything built on falsehood will not stand. You can’t deceive people that you are out for reconciliation when people know you and what you stand for. That is why I am advocating genuine reconciliation in PDP for the party to rise again and regain power at the centre in 2019. The PDP stand a good chance of regaining power, provided we are able to put our house in order. Nigerians have tasted the PDP and the APC; they can compare and contrast.

Will you contest the result of the recent local government election?

The local government election conducted last Saturday in Ogun was a sham; it was the height of disappointment. That election took us back to the era of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) and the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) in the Second Republic, when ballot box snatching, physical attacks on opponents, maiming and killing of voters were the order of the day. If the APC was popular, they shouldn’t have resorted to ballot box snatching.

Voting materials were not supplied in riverine areas of the state, yet results were declared. Many people who were shot are still in the hospital receiving treatment. It was barbaric, uncivilised and condemnable. The decision to contest the election result will be collective. When the party executive meets, we will discuss and take a decision.

  • Southwest PDP seeks chairmanship slot in reconciliation deal

Southwest PDP seeks chairmanship slot in reconciliation deal

THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Southwest yesterday called for zoning of the chairmanship to the region, as reconciliation efforts take off between the party’s two factions.

The zone made its position known at a meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

At the meeting were chairmen and party leaders from the six states in the zone.

The zonal leadership, in a nine-point communique, hailed the reconciliation efforts.

The PDP leaders said Southwest deserves the chairmanship slot because it has never held it before.

The communique, read by a former Minister of Sports, Prof. Taoheed Adedoja, said: “The Southwest PDP Forum, initiated by the BoT members of PDP from the Southwest, a replica of the national edition of the party to bring about peace, reconciliation and harmony in the party, came on board today on Monday, October 10, 2016, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

“The theme of the forum is: ‘Working together to regenerate our party in line with the spirit of the founding facilitators’.

“The forum recognises the role of BoT members, our governors, National Assembly members, founding fathers and other critical stakeholders in bringing about peace in our party.

“We commend the spirit of sportsmanship exhibited by both Senator Makarfi and Senator Sheriff joint committees in thrusting national peace and harmony in the party.”

The forum added: “We commend the leadership and membership of PDP in Edo State at the last gallant fight in the governorship election.

“The forum stands firmly by them in their effort to retrieve the stolen mandate. It urges members and leaders of PDP in Ondo State to close ranks and work together as a solid and united team to sustain the control of the state by PDP in the next election.

“This forum admonishes the leadership of our party to clearly zone the position of the national chairmanship of our party to the Southwest as the only zone that has never held that position before.

“The forum calls on the state party chapters to replicate this type of meeting in their respective states to resolve all internal grievances.

“And finally, the forum decided that irrespective of the various challenges facing the party at the national level, at the zonal level and each state of the federation, all leaders and members of the party have resolved to remain in PDP with a view to taking over power in Nigeria in 2019.”

The meeting was chaired by Chief Shuaib Oyedokun. Present were Senator Buruji Kashamu, Dr. Ade Dosumu, Adeniran, Jimoh Ibrahim, Senator Teslim Folarin, Dimeji Bankole, Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe, Alhaji Fatai Adeyanju and Prince Kola Balogun.

The six state chairmen are:  Mr. Yinka Taiwo (Oyo), Segun Adewale (Lagos), Soji Adagunodo (Osun),  Adebayo Dayo (Ogun), Chief Ajayi William (Ekiti) and Mr.  Biyi Moroye (Ondo).

•Party leader: Mimiko, Fayose violate court order with Akure meeting

The crisis rocking the People Democratic Party (PDP), Southwest zone, heightened yesterday as some factional zonal leaders rejected the decision of two governors, Ayodele Fayose (Ekiti) and Olusegun Mimiko (Ondo), zoning the party’s national chairmanship to Lagos and Ogun states.

Factional National Vice Chairman (Southwest) Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe and his Secretary, Chief Adepegba Otemolu, announced that the position of the PDP National Chairman is open to all aspirants from Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti and Lagos states.

The faction also proposed that the following positions should go to the following states: National Vice Chairman (Ondo/Ekiti), National Treasurer (Oyo/Osun) and National Deputy Publicity Secretary (Lagos/Ogun).

The faction said the announcement followed the outcome of an extra-ordinary meeting of the party’s Southwest Zonal Executive Committee yesterday at their Secretariat in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The two governors and some PDP leaders on Monday in Akure agreed to zone the PDP National Chairmanship to Lagos and Ogun states.

Ogundipe, who address a news conference after their meeting yesterday said the three blocks in the region have their representatives at the national level, adding that the leaders have resolved to throw the office of the national chairmanship open.

According to him, section 27 subsections 2A and 2B allows everybody who is interested in the position to contest.

“We are doing everything possible on the reconciliation of our great party. You are not unaware that there are issues, especially the issue of zoning. I want to assure you that we don’t have any problem for now.

“We have decided and resolved that after our meeting in Port Harcourt last week, where the position of the party’s National Chairman and the National Treasurer were zone to the Southwest, it is logical for us in the Southwest to come back home and do justice on how to share the position that was zone to the Southwest.

“I want to inform you that we have three blocks in the Southwest and we need to decide as to how we resolve the issue of sharing. We have the Lagos/Ogun axis, Oyo/ Osun axis and Ondo/Ekiti axis.

“All the zonal leaders have come together today at the zonal headquarter to do justice to the three positions.

“Therefore, we have resolved that Ekiti/Ondo axis, which has me as the National Vice Chairman, will continue with that position. The position of the National Treasurer, will go to Oyo/Osun and the office of the National Publicity Secretary will go to Lagos/ Ogun axis.

“As to the position of National Chairman of our great party, it is open to the three axes.”

He appealed to the party’s leadership to support the reconciliation process of the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ikweremadu, to reposition the party for future elections.

Other executives at the briefing include Vice National Secretary (Southwest)Chief Pegba Otemolu and the National Deputy Auditor (Southwest) Adekola Rasaq.

Also, Ogundipe, in a telephone chat with reporters in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, accused Mimiko and Fayose of violating the order of court by convening the Akure meeting.

He insisted that factional zonal chairman, who convened the Akure meeting, Dr. Eddy Olafeso, was sacked by a June 24 judgment delivered by a Federal High Court, Lagos, hence he lacked the power to do so.

He said what transpired at the Akure parley amounted to illegality and contempt of a valid order delivered by a court of competent jurisdiction.

He said: “Democracy is all about rule of law and PDP leaders and members should not be seen to be violating same.”

According to him, the citizenry are looking up to the PDP as the main opposition party to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 general elections.

Also, a member of the PDP Board of Trustees and former Deputy Senate Chief Whip, Chief Clement Awoyelu, described what transpired in Akure as a “waste of time”, saying the party has procedures for nominating candidates for positions.

Awoyelu, who is also the first Ekiti State PDP Chairman, maintained that the party constitution must be followed and delegates empowered to participate should not be denied the right to do so.

  • Fayose not bigger than our party – Southwest PDP

Fayose not bigger than our party – Southwest PDP

The National Vice Chairman (South West) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe, has declared that Governor Ayo Fayose is not bigger than the party and must therefore submit himself to the rules and regulations of the party at all times.

Ogundipe said the various interest groups in the party must obey the order of a Lagos Federal High Court which stopped the party from going ahead with the Southwest Congress earlier scheduled to hold on Saturday in Akure and Ijebu Igbo, by the two factions in the party.

Fayose, while speaking with reporters in Abuja on Friday, maintained that the South West Zonal Congress of the PDP must go ahead. He said no order of the court can stop the delegates from proceeding with the process.

The South West PDP is polarized into two groups with one faction loyal to the Senator representing Ogun East in the National Assembly, Buruji Kashamu while the other faction is loyal to Fayose and his Ondo State counterpart, Olusegun Mimiko.

The two factions are presenting parallel candidates for the positions of National Vice Chairman (South West), National Secretary, National Publicity Secretary and National Auditor, ahead of the May 21 National Convention slated for Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Speaking on the latest development in the party on Saturday, Ogundipe said the National Secretariat of the PDP had received the court order and was ready to abide by it.

When reminded of the insistence of Fayose that the Akure zonal congress would go ahead, Ogundipe said the era of “one-man show and unilateral decisions” is dead and buried in the party.

The zonal PDP boss advised all party leaders and members to obey the court order and not resort to self-help. He insisted that nobody in the party, no matter how highly-placed, should hold the court in contempt.

He warned that if Fayose and his group go ahead with their congress in Akure as earlier planned, it would be an effort in futility as the court order is clear and unambiguous.

Ogundipe said: “He (Fayose) is not the party and he is not bigger than the party, he takes orders from the party as a member and it is the party as a body that takes the decision of where to go and we all take orders from the National Secretariat.

“The court has said nobody should go ahead with the zonal congress and the party has decided to obey the court order and I am here in Ijesa Isu, my hometown. Until the court says otherwise, we won’t go ahead with the conduct.

“I am a law-abiding person and PDP is a law-abiding party. I have told my ogas at the top in the National Secretariat who are the custodians of everything in the party. I have informed them that we can no longer go ahead in the face of a subsisting court order.”

  • Southwest PDP backs zoning of party chairmanship to North

Southwest PDP backs zoning of party chairmanship to North

The Southwest Zone of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Wednesday threw its weight behind the proposal by some leaders in the zone to retain the position of the party’s National Chairman in the northern region of Nigerian.

It argued, at a stakeholders meeting in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, that the proposal would help PDP regain its strength in the North after a woeful outing in the 2015 elections.

After listening to various leaders of the party across the six states in the zone who lent their support to the proposal, the Zonal Chairman, Mr Makanjuola Ogundipe, wrapped up the meeting by taking endorsements of participants and presented it as the position of the zone.

According to Makanjuola, the proposal for the North to retain the national chairmanship does not necessarily translate to elongation of term for the incumbent, Alli Modu Sherrif.

“It also does not forbid any other zone from showing interest in the position. No one person or group can deny any member of the same party the right to aspire to any office or vote and be voted for. We are in a democracy, not autocracy. We have canvassed our views. Let those with contrary opinions or positions put forward theirs. We need not abuse one another,” he said.

The meeting pointed out that a North which currently has only two PDP governors, will obviously be further weakened by being denied the position of the National Chairman, adding that it will be viewed as marginalization of the region.

The meeting also argued that the lack of cooperation among members of the party in the Southwest zone would constitute a challenge to a National Chairman from the zone.

The leaders threw their weight behind the Alli Modu Sherrif leadership and called for support from all members of the PDP in the zone for the party’s survival.

Among party leaders in attendance were the National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo; National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh; Sen. Buruji Kashamu; National Women Leader, Dr Kema Chikwe; Sen. Teslim Folarin; Alhaji Shuaib Oyedokun; former Southwest Zonal Chairman, Alh. Tajudeen Oladipo; Senator Ayo Adeseun;  former House Leader, Hon. Mulikat Akande-Adeola and the governorship candidate in Lagos State in the 2011 election, Ade Dosumu.

Others were the state chairmen of the party in the zone including Tunji Shirley (Lagos), Yinka Taiwo (Oyo), Ganiy Olaoluwa (Osun) and Idowu Faleye (Ekiti).

  • Southwest PDP in quandary over Sheriff

Southwest PDP in quandary over Sheriff

Ahead of the national convention scheduled for May 21, the Southwest Peoples Democratic (PDP) is divided over the tenure elongation being canvassed for the National Chairman, Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff, by the zonal party leadership. Assistant Editor LEKE SALAUDEEN examines the implications of the proposal on the party’s cohesion in the zone.

The proposal by the Southwest leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to cede the position of the national chairman to the north is generating ripples in the zone.

When the National Vice Chairman, Southwest, Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe, led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the National Chairman, Senator Ali Modu- Sheriff, he said the North should retain the position, ahead of the convention. He argued that, if the position comes to the South, it will resort in branding the PDP as a regional party.

Those opposed to the proposal said it contradicted the party’s position to zone the presidency to the north in 2019. Based on this, they argued that the Southwest should produce the next national chairman, a position, it has not held since the PDP was founded in 1998.

Analysts are of the view that the proposal was an orchestrated plot by some PDP governors to accommodate Sheriff in the forthcoming convention or seek tenure extension for him. To other observers, it is curious that the call came barely hours after Sheriff returned from the region and wondered whether the move is a tacit campaign for Sheriff.

A PDP chieftain, who spoke in confidence, said the Ogundipe leadership has plunged the Southwest PDP into an avoidable crisis at a time the party is factionalised in the zone.

He said: “I don’t know why our leaders would go to Abuja to tell the national chairman that the Southwest zone has agreed that the north should retain party chairmanship when such a sensitive matter has not been exhaustively discussed by the stakeholders let alone taking decision. The Ogundipe leadership has compromised the Southwest interest and the zoning arrangement on the sharing of party’s position.

“Ogundipe and his co-travellers are acting a script prepared by the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose towards achieving his political ambition in 2019. Fayose is eying the office of Vice President. His calculation is that if the Southwest produced the party’s national chairman, it will be impossible for him to emerge as the vice presidential candidate because the party will not zone the two key positions to the zone at a time.

The source added: “You can see that the Southwest PDP leaders are after the personal interest of an individual and not the larger interest. I am not surprised Ogundipe is promoting Fayose’s political ambition ahead of 2019 because he came to office by the grace of the governor. Remember, Ogundipe’s predecessor, Ishola Filani, was removed from office through the combined efforts of Fayose and Senator Buruji Kashamu. So, you can see why the Ogundipe leadership would go to any length to compromise the interest of Southwest zone because of Fayose.

“Another factor to be considered in this episode is the role Kashamu played in the victory of Fayose in the last governorship election in Ekiti State. Kashamu was one of the major financiers of Fayose’s campaigns. It was not surprising that the so called delegation led by Ogundipe told Sheriff to recognise Kashamu as leader of the party in the Southwest”.

But, the former PDP Vice Chairman (Southwest) Chief Ishola Filani,  said retaining the chairmanship in the North will augur well for the party. According to him, there is no co-ordinating leadership for the PDP in the north.

Filani said the party’s position in the region is precarious with only two states. “We need the north to come back to the PDP. We have to let them know they are wanted in the PDP. To that effect we should concede the party chairmanship to the north for now. Whosoever emerges becomes the rallying point for the north. It will encourage them that they are still part of the party.

“Another reason why the PDP should retain chairmanship in the north is that the party should not be seen as a southern party. In the South, we can take care of ourselves. In the Southwest, we have two governors; the South-South, five governors and the South East, three governors. In the South, we are sophisticated enough to embrace and appreciate what the PDP stands for.

“We lost the 2015 presidential election because we didn’t pick our candidate from the North. In 2019, we should pick our presidential candidate from the north, by then the party’s chairmanship will return to the South. With that everybody will have a sense of belonging.

“The doctrine of necessity makes it apparent for us to pick our Chairman from the north for the survival of the party. It is an interim arrangement so that the north does not lie fallow. I am happy our leaders are now embracing the position I canvassed three or four months ago”.

A member of the delegation who does not want his name in print, said: “we unanimously endorsed Senator Buruji Kashamu, as leader of the party in the zone. We chorused the recognition of Kashamu, as leader of the party in the Southwest. The leader of the delegation, Ogundipe while speaking on our behalf poured encomiums on Kashamu.”

He said the original purpose of the meeting was just to express solidarity to Sheriff but not to jettison the legitimate demand of the zone. It was in the process of the meeting that some people started pushing the idea that Senator Sheriff should continue in office as National Chairman while Kashamu should be adopted as the Southwest leader of the party.

The source said contrary to the allegation that Kashamu was the one that sponsored the idea, it was not true. “In all honesty, he was not comfortable with the development but there was nothing he could do in that situation,” said the source.

Ogundipe was reported to have said about Kashamu: “There will be no Southwest PDP .without this man, even though we have two governors. Without Buruji in the Southwest, there is no PDP in Southwest. Hold him tight, he will assist you”.

Reacting to the development, Chairman, Lagos State PDP, Captain Tunji Shelle (rtd), dismissed the proposal. “Ogundipe can’t speak for me; he can’t speak for Lagos State and the Southwest in general”.

Shelle was surprised that Ogundipe told the national chairman that the proposal was endorsed by the Southwest. “But, I find it strange that the delegation claimed that after consultation with the major stakeholders in the zone, it was decided that the North should hold on to the office of the chairman. It is not true, he said.

Shelle added: “The party has set up a committee to zone the party offices. It is the committee that would decide which offices go to what zone. No zone can decide on what positions it would get. Ogundipe can’t decide for the party.”

The Chairman of Lagos Collectives of the PDP, Prof. Tejumade Akitoye-Rhodes, said it is a monumental shame for a few decrepit characters to claim that the Southwest was not interested in the office. He described the development as illogical and patently absurd. He said such a demand does not in any way represent the position or the will of the Yoruba people in the PDP.

According to Prof. Akitoye-Rhodes, the Southwest is the only region that has not occupied the prime office of the National Chairman of our great party since PDP came into being in 1998. He added that the region would fight with all legitimate tools to ensure that justice was duly served in this crucial matter. He said the zone still parades eminent personalities and powerful evocative names like Chief Olabode George,  Alhaji Yekeen Adeojo, Chief Shuaib Oyedokun, Chief Abiola Ogundokun, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, Chief Abiola Ogundokun, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Prof.Tunde Adeniran, Dr Saka Balogun, Dr Olu Alabi, Chief Martins Kuye, Chief Joju Fadairo, Senator Kofo Bucknor-Akerele, Dr Ogunkelu, Chief Onikepe Oshodi Governor Olusegun Mimiko and Governor Fayose, who have the capacity to lead.

He cautioned Sheriff against the antics of some members who may be working towards a script against the collective interest of the party ahead of the convention and the 2019 elections.

But, Kashamu in a statement said “the recent visit of a delegation of leaders of the PDP in the Southwest to the National Working Committee (NWC) was not done to choose or pronounce anyone as the leader of the PDP in the Southwest, rather it was to pledge our support for the Senator Ali Moddu-Sheriff-led NWC.

“All that happened at the occasion was fortuitous. It is also true that people like to have a rallying point, and if some of our leaders and elders see me as a rallying point because of my generosity and empowerments activities over the years, I do not see why anyone should lose sleep over it. Leaders emerge naturally.”

On the proposal that the National Chairmanship of the party should remain in the North, Kashamu said it was the opinion of the delegation. “We were and are still of the view that given the strong presence of the PDP in the South, with 10 governors out of 17 governors in the South and just two governors in the 19 states in the North, it would make more sense to leave the National Chairmanship of the party in the North, so as not to be branded a regional party.

“Our view does not foreclose any other opinion or suggestion. If some other persons have any other idea, they are at liberty to push it. At the end of the day, it is either superior argument wins or we go to the convention. For us, as true party men, what is best for our party and majority of the stakeholders is all we want”.

Analysts are of the view that there was no consultation to carry along the stake holders in the zone, hence, the sharp disagreement among members. A member of the PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT) Chief Ebenezer Babatope said it was an aberration for any right thinking member belonging to the Southwest Zone of the PDP to speak in contrary tone to the popular demand and worst still for such people to go ahead parading their views as if they were representing anybody.

According to him, whosoever says the Southwest is not ready for the position of the national chairman of the PDP now is not only speaking for himself but contrary to a popular demand from the zone. He noted that since the party has agreed to zone the presidency to the north in 2019, which of course is normal in this circumstance, it is imperative to zone the National Chairman to the Southwest.

Youth activist Kunle Olajire cautioned the leaders against imposing Kashamu as the Southwest leader. He recalled that it was his imposition that forced Obasanjo and his supporters out of the PDP. “Obasanjo felt slighted that Kashamu was elevated to such a position in the Southwest. That alone contributed to the party’s abysmal performance in the region during the last general elections”.

Olajire said: “I don’t believe that our leaders will trade off the legitimate demand of the Southwest because they know such a plot won’t work. What the Southwest is saying is, giving the national chairman to the South now would alienate a lot of northern leaders from the party.

“So, the proposal is to leave the national chairman in the North, ahead of 2019. We can then do a mid-term convention, probably in 2018, and take the position to the South,” he concluded.

Southwest PDP and battle for Senate

THE senatorial race is gathering momentum in the Southwest. Across the six states-Lagos, Oyo, Ondo, Osun, Ogun, and Ekiti-aspirants are on the prowl. The struggle for tickets have polarised the troubed chapters and escalated the protracted crises rocking the party.

In Ondo State, the battle was fierce. But now, stakeholders have settled for consensus candidates. In the North District, Senator Bode Olajumoke has been endorsed, to the consternation of former Power and Steel Minister Dr. Olu Agunloye, who lost the ticket to Senator Ajayi Boroffice when they were in the Labour Party (LP). Despite the consensus arrangement, primaries may still hold in the district.

In Ondo Central, Senator Ayo Akinyelire has been endorsed for another term. He is the consensus candidate.

In Ondo South, where Senator Morayo Lebi, a lawyer, has been tipped as the candidate, the supporters of Senator Boluwaji Kunlere are kicking. Kunlere is the former LP secretary before he was elected into the Senate. But, he defected to the PDP, following a rift with Governor Olusegun Mimiko. When the governor returned to the PDP, the hostility escalated. Many stakeholders in the South are still rooting for the candidature of Kunlere.

In Ogun State, the contest is hot. In Ogun East, Buruji Kashamu has declared his intention to run. This has made former Governor Gbenga Daniel to withdraw from the race. In Ogun Central, Hon. Lanre Laoshe and a lawyer, Mrs. Bisola Sodipo- Clark, wife of Senator Edwin Clark, are fighting for the ticket. In Ogun West, the struggle is between the Chairman of the Governing Board, University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Mr. Biyi Otegbeye, and former Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Waliyu Taiwo. Ekiti senatorial aspirants include former Deputy Governor Biodun Olujimi (South), Senator Ayo Arise (North), Senator Bode Ola (Central), former federal legislator Mrs. Fatima Rasaki (Central), and Duro Faseyi (North).

In Lagos PDP, the contest is dull. In Lagos Central, Dr. Ade Dosunmu, the former governorship candidate is running. In the West District, the lone contestant is Mr. Hakeem Gbajabiamila, former Commissioner for Waterfront. In 2007, he left the Action Congress (AC), following his failed governorship bid.

In Oyo, it is a battle of gladiators. Senator Ayo Adeseun, a defector from the All progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP is seeking re-election in Oyo Central. But, a source said that the senators is planning to return to the House of Representatives so that he can become the Speaker, if the PDP commands the majority in the House after next year’s elections. Also, the House of Representatives Majority leader, Hon. Mulikat Adeola-Akande, is running for the House of Representatives in Ogbomoso Constituency.

In Oyo South, another defector from the APC, Senator Olufemi Lanlehin (South), is running on the platform of the Accord Party (AP). PDP chieftain and son of the late strongman, Kamoru Adedibu, is seeking re-election in Oyo North. Also, Senator Hosea Agbola is said to be mobilising for support for his senatorial aspiration in the same district.
