  • Police arrest three suspected internet fraudsters

    The police in Lagos have arrested three suspected internet fraudsters who allegedly specialised in duping property dealers in different parts of the state.

    The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police command, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed this on Monday in a statement.

    The statement said that the suspects were arrested by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS).

    Those arrested, according to the statement, included a 28-year-old, a 27-year-old and a 33-year-old.

    The statement said that they were picked up last Wednesday in Akwa, Anambra, following intelligence reports.

    It said the suspects had swindled a property dealer in Lagos State of about N4 million while posing as potential clients to perpetrate their crime

    The statement said their arrest came less than a month after the RRS burst another syndicate  of  fraudsters who operated   on the internet.

    ”The suspects are part of internet fraudsters that specialise in hacking into e – mail addresses and using them to send messages seeking transfer of funds in tranches to different accounts.

    ”Unlike the present gang, the other gang comprising of four young men were arrested in Onitsha for hacking into the e – mail account of the CEO of a popular loto company based in Lagos.

    ”They fraudulently transferred N5 million into four separate accounts.

    ”The Lagos-based estate agent claimed he received an e-mail giving payment instructions.

    ”The owner of the e-mail address is his client.

    “It gave payment instructions to transfer funds in his custody to an account belonging to one Emmanuel Ajinubi with First bank Account No. 3046974892.

    ”The first transfer of N800,000 was Oct. 24th , 2016. On 27th Oct., 2016, there was another instruction to transfer N530,000 to the same account.

    ”On Nov. 1, 2016, he transferred N720, 000 into Ifenancho Kingsley (a suspect) First Bank account 3050290672 and further instruction the following day of N850,000 to same account.

    ”The total amount transferred into the two accounts was N3, 820,000,” it said.

    The statement said the victim only realised that the payment instructions did not emanate from his client after he got a phone call from him.

    It said efforts were ongoing to arrest other members of the gangs who were directly involved in the hacking into some corporate and individuals’ e-mail addresses.

    “The three suspects have been transferred to SCID Panti for further investigations,” it added.

    Police rescue 28 persons, including 13 teenagers

    The Lagos State Police Command had rescued 28 persons that included 13 teenagers found in chains in a house at Oke-Ira, Ojodu area of the state.

    The command’s spokesperson, SP Dolapo Badmos, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday that the victims were rescued on Friday.

    Badmos said that the command had also arrested one Emmanuel Adeyemi alleged to have been responsible for the crime.

    She said that the rescued people comprised: six male adults, nine female adults, seven female children and six male; adding that they had been taken into protective custody.

    “On Aug. 19, at about noon, the command received information that a child was in chain in a house at Oyinbo Unity Estate, Olamidun Close, Yakoyo, Oke-Ira, Ojodu.

    “Consequently, he command mobilized a team of policemen to the location, where a 17-year-old boy, (names withheld) was found in a room with a chain around his legs.

    “The victim was allegedly chained by the suspect who claimed to be his father to restrain him from going out.

    “Further search of the premises led to the discovery of 27 others chained by the same suspect,’’ Badmos said.

    The image-maker said that the suspect was currently undergoing interrogations, stressing that the command was working assiduously to get to the roots of the matter.

    Armed robbers shot dead in Lagos

    A group of armed robbers on Monday caused chaos on Okunola Road, Idimu area of Lagos State after they allegedly attacked a police inspector.
    The three-man gang, which rode on a motorcycle to carry out their operation were said to have robbed the inspector, after coming out from a bank in that area.

    They reportedly shot the inspector on the jaw and snatched away his money.

    However, a Police patrol team attached to the Anti-Pipeline Vandalism Intelligence Unit at Idimu engaged the robbers in a shootout in their attempt to escape from the scene, killing two of the robbers.

    The injured police inspector was rushed to the nearby general hospital.

     The Police Public Relations officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Dolapo Badmos, told reporters that the surviving member of the gang, Gafaru Ismail, has been arrested and taken to Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) Ikeja.

    The PPRO also stated that two pistol guns were recovered from the robbers.

  • Eid el-fitri: Police assures Lagos residents of adequate security

    The Lagos States Police Command on Tuesday assured the general public that adequate and necessary security measures have been put in place during and after the Eid el-Fitri celebrations.

    The Command in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, assured Muslim faithful and the general public of their safety.

    She said that the Command has put in place appropriate operational strategies to ensure hitch-free Eid el-Fitri celebrations at all praying grounds, recreational centres, hotels and all other public places.
