BREAKING: Spain beat England 2-1 to lift Euro 2024

Gareth Southgate’s side were sunk by Mikel Oyarzabal’s late winner to leave England heartbroken again and unable to end the long wait for success for the men’s team.

Spain’s young star wingers combined to give them the lead two minutes after the break as Lamine Yamal’s pass opened up space for Nico Williams to beat England keeper Jordan Pickford with a powerful low finish.

Substitute Cole Palmer raised the hopes of another dramatic comeback with a composed left-foot strike after 73 minutes.

However, it wasn’t enough to hold the Spanish side who came roaring back and snatched the win four minutes from time as Oyarzabal slid home Marc Cucurella’s cross to leave England the nearly men once more.

Declan Rice: England won’t sit back against Spain

Declan Rice says that England know “not to sit back” in order to win Sunday’s Euro 2024 final against Spain at Berlin’s Olympiastadion, having learned from the painful memory of Euro 2020.

The midfielder said the squad are “desperate” to “rewrite history”, as he admitted that seeing Italy lift the trophy will haunt him forever. That may also involve learning from history, as Rice said that experience has shown them “how we can win this final”.

The 25-year-old is one of 11 players in the current squad who lost that showpiece at Wembley, and he admitted he now feels that it was England who let the game get away from them. Rice now believes the greatly improved performance in the 2-1 victory over the Netherlands can be crucial to beating a Spain team that England have “massive respect for”, but that just winning a semi-final should also be enjoyed.

When asked whether Gareth Southgate’s squad have “unfinished business” from Euro 2020, Rice said: “Yeah, definitely.

“Look, seeing Italy lift that trophy will haunt me forever. We are now presented with another opportunity where we can write our own history. We are up against another top side who we have to massively respect but we also have to enjoy these moments because in 15 or 20 years time when I look back, these are the nights I’ll remember.

Euro 2024: Spain net dramatic winner to dump hosts Germany out

Spain substitute Mikel Merino condemned host nation Germany to an agonizing Euro 2024 quarter-final exit with the last-gasp winner in a dramatic 2-1 victory in Stuttgart for the three-time winners.

Merino popped up in the 119th minute to power a header into Germany’s net from a lovely cross from Dani Olmo, who had fired Spain ahead on 51 minutes when he slammed a superb Lamine Yamal pass into the net.

Dani Olmo’s second-half strike was cancelled out by an 88th-minute equaliser from Florian Wirtz to send the game into extra-time. In the 119th minute, Merino produced a fine header from Olmo’s wonderful cross to send La Roja into the last four stage.

The Estadio Santiago Bernabeu will host the 2030 World Cup final, as per the latest coming out of the Spanish capital. Meetings between FIFA officials and representatives of the Moroccan, Spanish and Portuguese football bodies met last week in Agadir, and any doubts were removed.

That is the information Marca are working with, who say that while the RFEF could lose one of the 12-13 venues they are keen to have, the Spanish Football Federation would not cede on the final.

FIFA are currently in negotiations with Real Madrid about them loaning the stadium to the governing body.

They go on to say that there are still some doubts about venues for all three countries, but Spain are hoping to include Vigo and Valencia as their 12th  and 13th  venues, following protracted negotiations with the city councils.

With the World Cup final by FIFA regulation was set to be held in a venue with 80,000 seats or more. While Morocco are suggesting that they will build a large stadium with over 100,000 seats, the only two possible host stadiums currently are the Bernabeu and Camp Nou, once it is renovated.

He will now be suspended for their Albania clash on Monday, as he was also booked in the 3-0 victory against Croatia.

  • Spain brush past Italy to reach Euro 2024 knockouts

Spain brush past Italy to reach Euro 2024 knockouts

Spain qualified for the last 16 of Euro 2024 with a match to spare  after beating Italy 1-0 in a dominant display which ensured that La Roja would go through as Group B winners.

Riccardo Calafiori’s own goal nine minutes after half-time was the difference between the two sides at Gelsenkirchen in the biggest match to date at the tournament in Germany.

But the slender margin of victory didn’t reflect a statement performance from Spain who completely nullified Italy and should have had the game won by half-time, as they did in their opening round thumping of Croatia.

Nico Williams was the star for Spain as he ran Napoli right-back Giovanni Di Lorenzo ragged and supplied the cross from which the unfortunate Calafiori poked the winning goal into his own net.

Luis de la Fuente’s team have a perfect six points at the top of the group and take on Albania on Monday knowing that they are already in the knockout rounds and playing like potential champions.

For Italy Thursday’s deserved defeat was a reality check as vibrant Spain peppered the brilliant Gianliugi Donnarumma’s goal throughout the match while the Azzurri failed to have a single attempt on target.

It was a performance reminiscent of the Euro 2012 final between the two teams when Spain crushed Italy 4-0 in the last international hurrah for tiki-taka football.

However all is not lost for Luciano Spalletti’s team, who are second on three points, as a draw with Croatia on Monday will be enough to guarantee qualification behind Spain.

Spain could have been ahead twice in the first 10 minutes but squandered two great headed chances.

Less than two minutes were on the clock when an unmarked Pedri nodded Williams’ pinpoint cross straight at Donnarumma.

And then Williams, who had a field day against Di Lorenzo, was the guilty party by somehow heading wide Alvaro Morata’s superbly delivered, in swinging ball from the left flank.

Spain were clearly on top as Italy struggled to get out of their half, Gianluca Scamacca toiling on his own up front with little support and wasting possession when it did come his way.

Donnarumma had to be at his best twice within a matter of seconds when he first stuck out a foot to deny Morata and then pulled off a superb fingertip save which kept out Fabian Ruiz’s powerful drive from distance.

Meanwhile at the other end of the pitch Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon was a virtual spectator as Italy’s sole shot in the first half came just before the break when Federico Chiesa blazed a poor effort over from a difficult position.

The same pattern of Spanish possession and Italian defending continued after half-time and Pedri again wasted a great chance in the 51st minute, slamming wide after Marc Cucurella pulled back a perfect low cross.

But Spain got the breakthrough soon after and it came through more sensational play from Williams on the left, who made mincemeat of Di Lorenzo before fizzing across a ball which Calafiori couldn’t help but divert into his own goal.

La Roja went close to doubling their lead with two distance strikes from Morata and teen sensation Lamine Yamal, before the superb Williams smashed an effort past Donnarumma which came crashing out off the crossbar in the 71st  minute.

Italy pushed forward in hope of an equaliser after Mattia Zaccagni and Mateo Retegui replaced the ineffective Chiesa and Scamacca.

But in the dying moments Donnarumma again made two superb saves to twice stop Ayoze Perez making the scoreline better reflect a one-sided contest.
