  • Terry opts out of Spartak Moscow £3million a year deal

Former Chelsea Captain John Terry has called off the proposed move to Russian club side Spartak Moscow.

Terry had flown by private jet to Rome on Friday for a medical with the club ahead of finalising personal terms on a tax-free deal, believed to be in the region of £3million a year.

With the move off, a statement from Terry read: ‘After considerable thought, I have decided to decline a contract offer from Spartak Moscow. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Spartak and wish them and their supporters well for the rest of the season.

‘They are an ambitious club and I have been very impressed with their professionalism.

‘But after assessing this move with my family, we’ve decided this is not the right move for ourselves at this time. Good luck Spartak.’

The 37-year-old has had numerous offers since leaving Aston Villa as a free-agent in the summer following their play-off final defeat to Fulham.

Terry has kept himself fit by training throughout the summer and admitted to Sportsmail that he was ‘still hungry to play if everything around it is right’.

‘I am in the best condition I have been in for the last eight to 10 years of my career,’ said Terry.

‘I’ve had a brilliant summer, the first time in 20 years I have been able to get away like that with my family during the school holidays.

‘I was away so much last year because I was fully committed to giving everything to Aston Villa, but now I am fully recharged.’

The Russian side targeted Terry to replace French defender Samuel Gigot who picked up an anterior cruciate ligament injury last week and is out for the remainder of the season.

  • Onazi rejects Spartak Moscow

Super Eagles’ and Trabzonspor of Turkey midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has rejected a summer move to Russian side Spartak Moscow, Scorenigeria.com.ng reports.

Onazi, who won the 2013 Nations Cup with Super Eagles in South Africa, was on the verge of Trabzonspor exit over the financial state of the club which led to contractual debts.

Spartak then came knocking and the former Nigeria youth international fell for it. However, Scorenigeria.com.ng learnt that after receiving assurances from Trabzonspor hierarchy of improvements in their finances for the coming season and that all  grey areas would be sorted, Onazi called off his potential exit plan.

“Onazi is staying back at Trabzonspor”, Scorenigeria.com.ng was told by the former Lazio midfielder’s close pal.

“Trabzonspor has even started paying what they owe him. We spoke last week and he told me they have paid him some and that they have assured him their finances would be okay this coming season. That was the reason he decided not to move to Spartak Moscow”.

Onazi was one of the 23-man Super Eagles’ squad members to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia but didn’t kick a ball at the tournament.

  • Expected line-up if Liverpool must defeat Spartak Moscow

Expected line-up if Liverpool must defeat Spartak Moscow

Liverpool plays Spartak Moscow in Russia tonight (Kickoff time is 7:45pm – West Africa Standard Time) to put their qualification back on track after playing a 2-2 draw with Sevilla at Anfield.

Recall that Liverpool’s last five games have seen them play beautiful football but with no good result to show for it after they were thrashed by Man City 5 goals to nothing.

In other disappointing games, they drew with Sevilla (2-2), drew 1-1 with Burnley, eliminated by Leicester in the Carabao cup before getting back to winning ways against Leicester in the English Premier League (EPL) with the hard-fought match on Saturday.

Russia is a difficult place to go and get results for English teams as it has proved to be in the past.

Liverpool has played with Spartak Moscow on four occasions in European competitions, winning two and losing the other two.

If Liverpool must win against Spartak Moscow, they must on top of their game, which means their attack must put on their goalscoring boot; the midfielders must create enough for the Strikers and complement the defenders, who will be tasked with keeping the counter-attacking Spartak Moscow team at bay.

Here is Liverpool full squad for the Spartak Moscow game:

    Keepers: Karius, Mignolet, Ward

Defenders: Matip, Lovren, Moreno, Robertson, Alexander Arnold, Flanagan, Klavan

Midfielders: Henderson (captain), Wijnaldum, Milner, Can, Coutinho, Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Forwards:  Mane, Salah, Sturridge, Solanke, Firmino.

This is the line-up football analysts will expect for the game if Liverpool is to win the game in Russia. The club operates a 4-3-3 formation. that has been Liverpool’s formation since last season and it could be difficult to imagine Klopp changing it anytime from now.

    Expected Line-Up:

    Goalkeeper: Loris Karius.

Reason – Mignolet should be rested after his “hero and villain” performance against Leicester.  Ward should remain on the bench and Karius be given the nod to take charge of the goal post.

    Defenders: Flanagan, Matip, Lovren, Moreno.

ReasonFlanagan strength and power will be needed since Gomez is suspended for this game and the young Alexander-Arnold will be bullied on the ball.

Matip and Lovren should be at the heart of defence due to Klavan’s lack of pace and power.

Moreno should be given the nod ahead of Robertson due Moreno’s pace, his contribution to the attack and directness.

    Midfielders: Henderson, Can, Coutinho

ReasonHenderson will be expected to lead the team out on the field of play after a good all-round game on Saturday.

Wijnaldum or Can?  This is a big task for me to do. Either of the two can do the job but I will go for Can because of his versatility and his big body presence. Wijnaldum away performance is against him as he does not use to perform when he plays away from home. Coutinho automatically slots into creating and dictating the play from midfield.

    Forwards: Mane, Sturridge, Salah

Mane is ready for selection after not playing for his club’s last three games serving a suspension.

According to kloop, Mane is in the right frame of mind to start this game, so there is nothing stopping him from starting this game.

Mo Salah should start the game from the right side of the pitch, is pace and goal scoring ability will be needed if Liverpool is to win.

People will be expecting me to start Firmino for this match, but I will go for Sturridge. Many eyebrows will be raise as to this selection. In this match, Liverpool will need a natural number 9 to do the finishing which Sturridge has proven to be over the past years.

And moreover, Firmino needs rest as he has underperformed in the last two games and Sturridge showed what he is capable of doing in his brief cameo against Leicester.

With this strong line-up, I see Liverpool dismantling Spartak Moscow in Russia with a bit of luck.

Owngoalnigeria.com can authoritatively report that the 19-year-old was offered a five-year deal by the Russian side, and he had a routine medical before leaving Moscow after doing very well during the trials.
However, according to his elder brother Joshua Obaje, the deal has areas yet to cleared by his owners Wikki Tourist and Obaje’s representative.
” To God be the glory, he was offered a five-year deal but there are some grey areas we need to sort out before the deal can be made official,” Obaje told Owngoalnigeria.com.
” I can’t reveal the areas at least for now, but he had his medical which was okay, although lasted very long. There are issues to be sorted out with Wikki Tourist and even himself. Let us say for now the deal could happen, it could not.”

  • ‘We need God to beat Barca’

‘We need God to beat Barca’

Spartak Moscow coach Unai Emery insists his side do not need “divine intervention” to beat Barcelona in the Champions League.

Even though the trainer understands the difficulty of the task at hand, he believes there are ways to defeat the Catalans, and is determined to leave the Camp Nou victorious this week.

“When you take on Barcelona, you have to call on divine intervention or luck to beat them. But there are teams that have managed to defeat them,” Emery told Marca.

“So there are certainly ways to win against Barca. We all try to achieve it, but only the few chosen ones indeed beat them. We are working to become one of them.”

Emery then went on to praise Lionel Messi, and stressed that the Argentine always seems to be in fine form.

“Whenever Messi is on top of his game, which always appears to be the case, he makes the difference and can decide a game all by himself.”

Messi has already netted 61 goals in 2012, and will be looking to add to his tally against Spartak.
