Speaker urges Nigerians to pray for Tinubu, others

The Speaker of the Nasarawa House of Assembly, Mr Danladi Jatau, has urged Nigerians to pray for the success of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Abdullahi Sule’s administrations

He also urged Nigerians to pray for God’s intervention to overcome the challenges facing the country.

The speaker made the call during a Tafsir (Islamic sermon) organised by Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN), Nasarawa chapter yesterday in Lafia.

He said that every leader needed prayers and support of his people to succeed, hence the need for his call in that direction.

The speaker urged residents of the state to live in unity and peace, irrespective of their affiliations for development, to continue to thrive in the state.

The FOMWAN chairperson, urged women to live in unity and peace with one another, irrespective of their differences.

FOMWAN National Assistant Secretary, Dr Zainab Ahmed, who is also a former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), thanked the speaker for always identifying with activities that geared toward promoting unity and peace in the state and the country at large.

  • Rivers factional speaker, CP disagree on ‘assassination attempt’ claim

Rivers factional speaker, CP disagree on ‘assassination attempt’ claim

Edison Ehie, factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, yesterday alleged an assassination attempt on him.

He said policemen and armed thugs invaded his home in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

But the Commission of Police, Olatunji Disu, dismissed the claim, saying his men were on patrol and there was nothing for Ehie to worry about.

Ehie claimed the men attempted to break into his house to kill him and his family but were resisted.

The factional Speaker said he had become a target for attack for standing with Governor Fubara and fighting against anti-democratic forces.

Narrating the incident, he said: “Yesterday at about 11 pm, we had put the children to bed and I was interacting with my wife when we got alerted by security that there was an attempted invasion by men in mufti and some in uniform.

“We started hearing the noise of the attempt by these security men in their Hilux vehicles to forcefully gain entrance into my residence but they were repelled by the security personnel.

“And to our greatest surprise, these security operatives ordered their men and they started shooting sporadically.

“You can confirm from the neighbours in this vicinity that nobody could sleep last night.

“But to the glory of God, the security operative ably resisted them. And when my domestic staff went up and brought out his phone and started to shout that he was recording them they fled.

“Till now, my family is in shock. My wife and my two little children are still in shock. It is so painful that people can go to that level. My children cannot go to school. They did not sleep last night because of the shock”.

Ehie said there was a plot to link him to insecurity in the state including the killing of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), SP Bako Angbasim, in charge of Ahoada-East, his (Ehie’s) local government area.

Ehie’s associate, Ken Uchendu, said some senior security officers in the state should be held responsible if anything happens to the factional Speaker and his household.

He said footage of the incident as captured by Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) camera would be made public.

But Disu debunked the alleged assassination attempt on Ehie.

He said: “The preliminary investigations we have done so far, this morning, have not revealed any assassination attempt, all I knew was that police officers were on patrol, convoy patrol.

“It is a routine thing and then we have made frantic efforts to get across to the leader to give us any information he has so that we can include it in what we already have. So far, so good, nothing to worry about.

“My plead to him and every other person is, if there is any complaint, my number is going to be made public, they should call me quickly and I will quickly look into it. For now, I haven’t gotten anything like that.” Disu concluded.

Fubara urged Disu to fight crime justly and be fair to all.

Fubara, who received Disu in Government House, Port Harcourt, urged him to deploy his experience to thoroughly and professionally fight crime in Rivers.

  • Republican Mike Johnson elected U.S. House Speaker

Republican Mike Johnson elected U.S. House Speaker

The United States House of Representatives has elected Republican Mike Johnson as its speaker after a turbulent three weeks that left the rudderless chamber unable to carry out its basic duties.

The 220 to 209 vote yesterday elevated third-term congressman Johnson, 51, to a speaker’s chair that has been vacant since Kevin McCarthy was removed on October 3 by a small group of hardline Republicans in response to a deal with Democrats that averted a partial government shutdown.

In the weeks that followed, Republicans who narrowly control the House considered and rejected three possible replacements before settling on Johnson, a Louisiana lawyer backed by former President Donald Trump who spent years advancing conservative policies, such as school prayer.

“I think he’s gonna be a fantastic speaker,” Trump said at the New York court where the former president, who is now the Republican frontrunner for president in 2024, is on trial over a lawsuit alleging business fraud.

First elected in 2016, Johnson will be the least experienced House speaker in decades. A conservative with little leadership experience, he is best known as the author of an unsuccessful appeal by 126 House Republicans after the 2020 presidential election to get the Supreme Court to overturn election results in states that Trump had lost.

Johnson declined to answer a question about that effort after his nomination on Tuesday night.

In a letter to colleagues, Johnson has pledged to advance overdue spending legislation and ensure that the U.S. government does not shut down when current funding expires on November 17.

He will also have to respond to Democratic President Joe Biden’s $106 billion spending request for aid to Israel, Ukraine and U.S. border security. While the Republicans broadly support funding for Israel and the U.S. border, they are divided over further support for Ukraine.

While House leaders typically focus on fundraising and vote counting, Johnson is better known as an advocate for conservative social positions.

He has supported legislation that bars gender-related surgery and hormone treatment for transgender teens, prohibits mask mandates on aeroplanes, and tightens immigration and abortion restrictions.

Republicans narrowly control the House by a 221-212 margin, leaving them with little room for error on controversial votes. Divisions within the party were on display during the past few weeks, as they nominated three candidates for speaker – Steve Scalise, Jim Jordan and Tom Emmer – but were unable to secure the 217 votes needed to win the speaker’s gavel.

As speaker, Johnson will have to confront the same challenges that felled McCarthy and stymied his would-be successors. They include the demands of the caucus’ hardline members and the reality that with a Democratic majority in the Senate and Biden occupying the Oval Office, no laws can currently be passed in Washington without bipartisan support.

  • Ortom’s second term will be better, says Speaker

Benue State House of Assembly Speaker Titus Uba has praised Governor Samuel Ortom for his peace-building initiatives.

He said peace is critical to the progress of the state in the governor’s second term.

Uba said Ortom is now free to use his initiatives to govern and foster development because he is not teleguided by any godfather.

The Speaker spoke in Lagos, shortly after attending the conference of 36 Speakers of the House of Assembly organised by the Nigerian Institute for Lagislative and Democratic Studies.

He said: “We are now having peace becuase the anti-open grazing law is now in place. That was the basis of the crisis. Now that the law has come to stay, we have relative peace.

“There are communal crises due to border issues, farmland issues. An inter-state conference with Taraba State has been held. We had robust deliberations on border issues. The two governments agreed that there should be an end to the crisis.”

Uba said during Ortom’s first time, he faced the challenges of insecurity and godfatherism, adding that he will perform better in his second term because some of the problems have been resolved.

The Speaker hailed the governor for focusing on infrastructural development and welfare of workers.

Uba spoke on the challenges of the national minimum wage, saying that states and the Federal Government should sit together to reconsider it.

He feared that some states may not be able to cope, owing to the meagre allocation from the Federal Government.

Uba stressed: “The last minimum wage was implemented in Benue. The governor wants improvement in the wages of workers. He will implement it before he leaves office.”

The Speaker lamented that Benue’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) is small, adding that the federal allocation to the state is also small.

He also lamented that, at a time, Benue was being run on over-draft.

However, Uba thanked Ortom for paying salaries in the last two years.

He assured that the governor will also pay the arrears in his bid to enhance the welfare of workers.

Uba said the state faced serious political crises, particularly during the last general elections.

In his view, politicians heated up the Northcentral state in their disperation for power.

He thanked the people for supporting the governor to retain power.

Uba said: “Governor Ortom enjoys the goodwill of the people of Benue. He has their mandate to perform. In his second term, he is not under the influence of godfatherism. He has initiatives. He has been restoring peace in the state. We need peace so that there can be development.”

  • New twist in race for Speaker

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is seeking support for Femi Gbajabiamila to become Speaker of the House of Representatives. This is coming at a time more aspirants are showing interest in the race and insisting on realising their ambition, reports Dele Anofi, Abuja.

Lagos APC urges Reps-elect to support Gbajabiamila

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Lagos State Chapter has urged party members who have won elections into the House of Representatives to support Mr Femi Gbajabiamila for Speaker.

Mr Abiodun Salami, APC’s Assistant Publicity Secretary in Lagos State, made the appeal yesterday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Salami was reacting to the adoption of Gbajabiamila for Speaker of the lower chamber by the APC’s national leadership on Tuesday.

Gbajabiamila, representing Surulere 1 Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, was re-elected for the fifth term. He is the House Leader.

APC’s National Publicly Secretary, Lanre Issa-Onilu had announced the adoption of Gbajabiamila in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.

He had stated that the party took the decision after extensive deliberations with APC House of Representatives members-elect at a dinner with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Banquet Hall of Aso Villa.

Issa-Onilu, in the statement issued shortly after the meeting, also announced that the party had zoned the position of the Deputy Speaker to the North Central.

However, an APC House of Representatives member from Benue State, Mr John Dyegh, hours after the adoption of Gbajabiamila, declared his ambition to be Speaker.

In his speech yesterday in Abuja, Dyegh said he was out to serve the nation and that the North Central zone had been marginalised in the leadership of the House since 1999.

Meanwhile, Salami urged all House of Representatives members-elect under the platform of the party to work with unity of purpose and support the ambition of Gbajabiamila.

He said the party had acted well by adopting Gbajabiamila, saying, “he is an experienced legislator with sterling records of service to the people’’.

“We in Lagos APC are appealing to all our members across the country to support Mr Gbajabiamila in his bid to become the speaker of the ninth House of Representatives.

“He has been adopted by the party and that makes him the candidate of the party. We, therefore, urge House of Representatives members-elect to support him,’’ he said.

Salami described Gbajabiamila as a committed and loyal party man with good records of service both at the national and state levels.

“Even though he is elected on the platform of the party, we have no doubt that he will serve the interest of all Nigerians when he emerges as the speaker.

“We are also appealing to all Nigerians to support this cerebral gentleman to further impact on the country’s development through his legislative experience and prowess,’’ he said.

Salami said Gbajabiamila had sponsored many bills which have impacted positively on the lives of Nigerians.

“He sponsored the bill seeking equal opportunities for people with disability and criminalising estimated billing by electricity distribution companies,’’ he said.

He said Gbajabiamila also organised periodic empowerment programmes to uplift the people of his constituency.

North Central caucus rejects deputy speaker slot

Dyegh said the North Central caucus was not satisfied with the decision to adopt Gbajabiamila. He said the North Central caucus has asked the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to reconsider the decision and zone the seat to the North Central.

Dyegh, at a news conference yesterday, while reiterating the loyalty of the North Central caucus to the party, went ahead to declare his intention to vie for the position of the 9th Speaker of the House.

“We are not fighting the party,  we are not, we shall not, we are only giving the party an opportunity to come back and look at the zoning and look at what we are saying.

“Taking what the party says hook, line and sinker is not democratic, we are in a democracy. We have the right to vie for position, there’s freedom of expression. We believe in parry supremacy,  yes, the party is supreme.  I sing that, I say it, I believe it, I go by what the party says but this is a democracy and I believe we should give the Green chamber an option,” he said.

According to him, in addition to being the third largest contributor to the 2019 election success of the party,  fairness and equity demand that the North Central be considered for the position since the region has never produced the Speaker or Deputy Speaker since the country’s return to democracy in 1999.

He said: “My party the APC in her wisdom zoned the position of Speaker to the South West and even micro-zoned.

“I am a party man and my loyalty to the APC is 100 percent, however, the North Central zone has not been convinced nor given reasons why their votes should not count and why we should not run and we feel very strongly that there is still room for negotiation because we believe ‘it is not over until it is over’.

“We are therefore appealing to the party to have a rethink and rezone the Speakership to the North Central for justice and fair play. We pray to God Almighty to touch the hearts of our Leaders to reconsider us favourably.

On his candidacy for the post, the lawmaker said the decision to join the race was based on his unyielding faith in a united and prosperous Nigeria.

Citing sections of the constitution, Dyegh noted that “It will only be fair if the position of Speaker is given to the North Central, having taken away the seat of Senate President to the Northeast.

“It is instructive to note that the North Central has neither produced Speaker nor the Deputy Speaker since 1999. We are saying that reward in politics is based on what you bring to the table and the North Central brought the third highest number of votes in making President Muhammadu Buhari’s second term reality and enabling the APC to form Federal Government.”

Imo, Benue Reps declare for Speakership

Chike Okafor (Imo) also declared his intention to run for the Speaker’s office on Tuesday shortly before the Presidential dinner, saying that the Southeast deserved the Speaker’s position for the 9th House of Representatives.

He said no region contributed more to the 2019 election success of the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) Presidential candidate and others than the Southeast, adding that  the region deserved to be compensated for being denied a Principal Officer’s position in 2015 on the pretext that the region had no ranking members in the party then.

Okafor said the party must look beyond numbers but more on fairness and equity.

He said: “A ruling party doesn’t just look at the numbers alone; it also looks at National interest; it looks at social justice; it considers political stability and harmony in the body politics; it feels the pulse of the Nation and weighs in on equitable inclusion of federating units of the country in line with the provisions of the constitution of the country and the party, even as it affects sharing of political offices and looking at all these indices, as a party, we have not given the South-East a fair deal! Not yet.

“A critical review of the last general election would easily indicate that the South-East holds immense political prospect and our party needs to initiate efforts to bridge the inclusion gap as it affects the region and pave the way to extract some political capital from the region come 2023 and there is no better way to start than to zone the Speakership of the House of Representatives to the Southeast.”

    ‘No Retreat, No Surrender’

Another contender from the Northcentral, Umaru Bago (Niger), vowed not to relinquish his ambition for Gbajabiamila.

Bago, in a statement yesterday by his spokesman, Victor Ogene, said the party risked being steered towards the same path which led to the 2015 fiasco that the 8th National Assembly leadership tussle.

The statement reads: “Following yesterday’s (Tuesday, April 16, 2019) purported zoning and micro-zoning of the office of Speaker of the incoming 9th House of Representatives by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, there have been varied reactions by a cross-section of Nigerians, including members-elect, party stalwarts, political commentators and journalists.

“For us in the Hon. Mohammed Umaru Bago Campaign Organisation, we view the development as a poorly choreographed political orchestra aimed at using the hallowed precincts of the Presidential Villa to anoint a candidate from the Southwest geo-political zone.”

  • ‘Why I want to be Speaker’

House of Representatives member Nkeiruka Onyejeocha (Isuikwuato/ Umunneochi Constituency) is contesting for Speaker. She spoke with SUNNY NWANKO on her ambition and other partisan issues.

Congratulations on your victory at the polls.  How were you able to survive the struggle?

I was able to survive the struggle, first, by the grace and mercy of Almighty God, and then by the overwhelming goodwill of my people. One of the greatest things that has ever happened to me is the realization, through this election, that my people are indeed appreciative of my modest contributions to the development and welfare of my constituency. They came out in their numbers and resisted every opposition to affirm their confidence in me. My next line of action is to articulate those concerns of my people that were expressed during the electioneering period. I will then prioritize them, and seek means and ways to actualize each project.

Before your emergence as the candidate of APC for Isuikwuato/ Umunneochi Constituency, some persons had conspired to deny you the ticket. How would you see your victory?

Well, the idea of denying me ticket was the handiwork of a tiny clique of elite threatened by my connection to the poor masses. These rapacious few constitute a terrible minority, so their impact is limited to political party arena. Because I was confident in the electorate, I took my ticket elsewhere and won the election. There was no conspiracy by Isuikwuato indigenes. From the results, you can see that the great people of Isuikwuato voted massively for me. If there’s anything at all, it’s attributable to the parasitic political elites.

Your area has been a stronghold of PDP. What changed the narrative?

What changed the narrative is my philosophy of service to the people. The electorate is a lot wiser than ever before. The concept of political party dominance is gradually giving way. Individual candidates are increasingly being judged on their own merit.  At the floor of the Green Chamber, I sponsored a number of bills to protect and enhance the welfare of the poor, the weak, the vulnerable and the under-privileged persons. Some of these private bills have been passed and assented by Mr. President. For example, the Anti-Torture Act 2017 criminalizes any act of inhumanity against one another in forms of torture, cruelty, dehumanizing or degrading punishments. With this law in place, victims of extrajudicial mistreatment and rough-handling can challenge the abuse of their rights in court. Secondly, the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act 2017 is my brainchild. Hitherto, hospitals were not obligated to attend to victims of gunshots from armed robbers or stray bullets without the Police clearance. Unfortunately, this led to avoidable deaths. But today, the new legislation has sorted out the problem. Another bill that was very dear to my heart, which by the grace of God, had been passed and assented by Mr. President, is the National Senior Citizens Centre Act 2017. The plight of our retirees, which has become a national embarrassment, due to the failings of most state governments to pay their pensions and gratuities, spurred me into sponsoring the new legislation. The Centre will help to cater for their needs and raise awareness for spirited interventions, instead of allowing them to roam the streets like beggars. Also, I sponsored the Local Government Autonomy bill, which is geared towards strengthening the local government councils for enhanced service delivery at the rural areas. The bill has been merged with the Constitutional Amendment Bill, which would require the concurrence of at least two-thirds majority of 36 States Houses of Assembly and presidential assent before it becomes a law. These laws have direct impact on the people. More so, I sponsored and co-sponsored motions on matters of public importance. The constituency represent – Isuikwuato/Umunneochi areas are highly prone to ecological challenges, largely accentuated by gully erosion. My motions have brought succour and interventions of appropriate federal government ministries and agencies, some of which are still on-going. I attracted projects across the 22 political wards in my constituency. The projects include pipe-borne water, electricity transformers, renovation and erection of modern classroom blocks, computer centers, and health care delivery equipment. For over ten years, my Foundation runs an annual week-long free medical outreach in collaboration with Living Hope Ministries, United States of America with a team of over twenty expatriate doctors of different specializations. The medical programme holds every month of June across the two LGAs of Isuikwuato and Umunneochi. Lives had been saved through the humanitarian gesture. For me, the greatest challenge has been to lift many people out of poverty bracket. Many indigent students have benefited from my scholarship endowments; modern bungalows were built for many homeless widows; and through healthy working relationships with colleagues and a number of federal institutions, I attracted hundreds of employments for our young graduates, while those who could not afford tertiary education were trained on special skills and equipped for economic sustenance. Above all, I maintain constant touch with my people through a rotatory monthly interactive meetings within my constituency, organized by the leadership of Nkeiruka Onyejeocha Foundation. More importantly, I am active and regular in plenary and committee sessions at the National Assembly. I am not an absentee lawmaker. I receive calls from serious-minded Nigerians from all walks of life with commendations for my robust engagements and contributions on national issues. As the Chairman of Committee on Aviation, my colleagues and I stepped up matching oversight responsibilities, which are evident in the massive upgrade of our airports to global standards, and reduction in civil air accidents, which hitherto were largely attributed to lackluster and poor regulatory mechanisms. And to the glory of God, my reputation has remained intact. I have never been indicted on account of financial infractions or dereliction of duty. I believe that good name is better that riches, and that it is God who gives power to get wealth. So, I believe that these modest efforts contributed to the groundswell of solidarity, which metamorphosed to my return back to Abuja for the fourth term.

What does your re-election mean it to you?

My re-election is a re-affirmation of my commitment to the general good of the great people of Isuikwuato and Umunneochi Local Government Areas. I shall continue to be a beacon of hope to them at all times.

Abia North Senatorial District can now boast of three National Assembly members. What should the people of the zone be expecting?

With a Senator and two APC Representatives from Abia North Senatorial District, we will strive to translate them to dividends to our people vis-à-vis federal presence.

What does the 85,000 votes for the President in Abia during the national assembly and presidential elections mean for the average Abia and southeasterners? What should Abia State expect from the APC government at the centre?

The 85,000 votes for President Buhari from Abia is a manifest evidence of his acceptance by the people of Abia State. It is our way of showing appreciation for his policies and projects that have impacted the people positively. I believe that the APC Government at the Centre will do much more for Abia State and Ndigbo in general, and attend to concerns raised by a section of the community about balance in appointive positions. My people are agitating to be given a greater sense of belonging.  Having a Speaker of the House of Representatives from the South-East will definitely help to assuage the feelings of exclusion.  For the 9th Assembly, I believe that my experience would count. It is not a fluke that I am privileged to be the highest ranking APC House of Reps Member from the south-east, the homestead of PDP. It gives me a vantage position to play strategic roles in the 9th Assembly. I am upbeat that I would enjoy the confidence of my colleagues and our political party when the new leadership would be constituted. We need to support and collaborate with Mr. President in his ‘next level’ agenda. We need to forge a healthy synergy with the executive so that we won’t have repeated cases of turned down bills from the presidency. We need maturity and less politicking to move our nation out of doldrums. Nigeria is a great country and all hands must be on deck to make it work.

Many are calling on the governorship candidate of your party to allow the sleeping dog lie by allowing the governor-elect concentrate and work for the next four years. Your take?

The decision to go to the Tribunal or not by the gubernatorial candidate of APC belongs to the Party and the candidate. I believe that they will consider the inherent factors, and take the best decision for Abians and the Party.

  • Agitations for Senate President, Speaker hot up

ALL Progressives Congress (APC) chieftains and stakeholders from Oyo State and the Northeast are lobbying for House of Representatives’ and Senate President’s positions in the Ninth National Assembly.

Oyo State’s moves to produce the Speaker may have received the backing of some members of the APC National Executive Committee (NEC).

A member of the party’s NEC from Northeast stated this after a meeting of stakeholders in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The party chieftain, who craved anonymity, said they are mobilising stakeholders from other zones to ensure Oyo get the position of Speaker.

“Obviously, Oyo State has ranking members of the National Assembly that are qualified to compete for any key position and that is why we are moving round to mobilise party stakeholders to support our agitation,” the party chieftain said.

APC Deputy National Youth Leader Bolaji Repete, who also confirmed the meeting in Ibadan, said  the Southwest would leave no stone unturned to secure the Speakership position for Oyo State.

Repete noted that a larger meeting of some of the APC National Executive Committee members has been fixed for Wednesday in Abuja.

Also, a group of concerned stakeholders under the aegis of Southwest Youth Ambassadors has called on APC stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the party’s national leadership to consider Segun Odebunmi for House of Representatives’ Speaker.

The group, in a statement issued by its coordinator, Sanjo Saka and secretary  Ezekiel Akinborode as well as the group’s Publicity Secretary, Segun Aremu, said Odebunmi, who is a third-term federal lawmaker, has the political dexterity, administrative acumen and inter-personal skills to lead the House.

Appreciating Tinubu’s efforts in ensuring victory for the party across the country, the group expressed confidence in the capacity of Odebunmi to drive the affairs of the Green Chamber.

It added that the legislator would complement President Muhammadu Buhari’s efforts in building a prosperous nation.

“Having been a local government chairman, commissioner and now a member of the House of Representatives, Odebunmi is qualified for the position of Speaker. We are confident that the federal lawmaker will not disappoint the party and Nigerians in general,” the statement stated.

The group urged the Southwest members of the Green Chamber to reach out to their colleagues in other zones to achieve Odebunmi’s aspiration and pray for their success.

But, the Northeast  is also demanding that the slot of the Senate President should be zoned to the area.

The agitation thickened at the weekend when the North East Advocacy Group (NEAG), a socio-political organisation,  said at a news conference that the zone has been marginalised for too long.

The NEAG, in a statement by 11 key stakeholders from the zone, said: “It’s  now our turn; we have been marginalised for too long.”

The group is agitating on the premise  that the Northeastern zone voted massively for President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 presidential poll.

Some of the stakeholders include: Mohammed Kumalia, Ibrahim Zailani, Senator Bashir Marafa, Adamu Modibbo, Abubakar Muazu, Titsi Ganama and Ammuna Ibrahim Khadi.

Others are Emmanuel Bello, Barma Shettima, Mrs. Bless Hungushi and Bala Bello Tinka.

“The Senate Presidency should be zoned to the Northeast, as the North Central and Southeast zones have produced Senate Presidents in the recent past.

“Micro zoning to a state or individual should be avoided as it negatively affects the executive/legislative harmony and negatively affects the smooth running of government business.

“The will of the distinguished senators should be respected and upheld to avoid conflicts and skirmishes between the Executive and the Legislative arms,” the NEAG advised.

The group called on APC leaders to quickly announce the zoning formula for the principal officers of both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

NEAG said announcing the zoning formula for the principal officers would “avert a situation where the zoning is done after candidates have started campaigning, causing a feeling that the zoning is targeted to favour particular individuals”.

“The Northeast has never produced the Senate President. The position had always been zoned to other zones, especially the North Central and South East Zones since the return to democratic rule in 1999.

“Therefore, we humbly request the ruling APC to zone the position of Senate President to the Northeast, foster a harmonious working relationship between the executive and the legislative arms of government.

“We also wish to call on the APC and the executive arm of government to allow the senators exercise their constitutional right to choose a Senate President of their choice.”

It added: “In the last 20 years, these zones had  occupied the position for 12 years; David Mark (eight years) and Bukola Saraki (four years). The zone had earlier produced two Senate Presidents in the persons of  Ameh Ebute and Iyorchia Ayu.

“The Southeast produced the late Evans Enwerem, the late Chuba Okadigbo, Anyim Pius Anyim and Ken Nnamani, who cumulatively occupied the position for  eight years.

“In the 2019 General elections, the Northeast voted massively for President Muhammadu Buhari, becoming the zone that contributed the  second highest number of votes for the president’s reelection.

“It is only just and fair that the Northeast is considered for the third highest position in the country, considering the electoral contribution of the zone at the polls.”

  • Adamawa Deputy Speaker, Majority Leader sacked

The Deputy Speaker and Majority Leader of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Emmanuel Tsamdu and Hassan Barguma respectively have been removed.

The Assembly, in an unusual sitting Saturday, also impeached the Deputy Majority Leader, Abubakar Isa (Shelleng Constituency); and Deputy Chief Whip, Abdullahi Nyapak (Verre Constituency).

In their places, Lumsabani Dilli (Demsa Constituency) was made the Deputy Speaker, while Hayatu Atiku (Uba-Gaya) was elected Majority Leader.

Safiyanu Aminu Aliyu (Song Constituency) became the new Deputy Chief Whip whike Sani Shehu (Mubi North Constituency) became the Deputy Majority Leader.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Alhaji Kabiru Mijinyawa, confirmed the development, but in a reaction, Emmanuel Tsamdu rejected his impeachment, asserting, “13 people cannot impeach me.”

The Assembly comprises 25 members, which implies that only slightly more than half the number conducted the impeachment.

It was still unclear by press time why the impeachment was effected and why it should be on a Saturday.
