Fayose to Buhari: stop speaking with ‘outsiders’

•Governor urges President to speak with him

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has criticised President Muhammadu Buhari for speaking on phone with some world leaders and refusing to speak with any local opposition figure.

Fayose said rather than the President shopping for outsiders to speak with to prove that he (Buhari) is well, Buhari should be encouraged to speak with him.

Some world leaders the President had spoken with since the commencement of his medical vacation in London include President Donald Trump of the United States,  King Mohammed VI of Morocco and the President of the African Union (AU), Moussa Faki.

In a statement yesterday by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, the governor said: “I advise the President to speak with me  to convince Nigerians that he is hale and hearty instead of looking for outsiders to convince us.

“If the problem is looking for a credible person tohelp convince Nigerians then Ayo Fayose is the best bet.

“Let the President speak with me. If I tell Nigerians that the President spoke with me, they will believe,” he said.

Nigerians, he added, are suspicious of Buhari’s purported visits to London as well as his orchestrated telephone conversations with international figures, who Nigerians cannot trust to give an unbiased report about the President’s  health.

“Since they are eager for the President to speak to people, let Buhari talk to me.

“I can be reached on 08035024994. I am credible and Nigerians will believe me.

“They said he spoke to President Donald Trump; despite the hype, Nigerians were sceptical. Then they said he spoke to the King of Morocco; again, Nigerians were suspicious.

“Before we recovered from that, it was the AU President.

“A President that can speak with outsiders should be able to whisper or wave to his own people.

“The people voted him in and so presidential aides should stop giving the impression that Buhari has no respect for the electorate.”

Oyo govt., labour hold reconciliatory talks

The face-off between the Oyo State Government and labour may soon be over as the two parties commenced reconciliatory talks on Wednesday in Ibadan.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that workers led by the national leadership of the NLC had on June 6 declared an indefinite strike over their unpaid six months salaries.

The workers also rejected government’s controversial education initiative to involve private participation in the management of public secondary schools while also demanding the withdrawal of all charges against the labour leaders in a court of law.

A five-hour reconciliatory meeting facilitated by the State House of Assembly, however, held at the Executive Chambers of the Governors Office.

Speaking after the meeting, which ended at exactly 8.15p.m., the parties told newsmen that the reconciliatory process was on course.

Mr Peters Adeyemi, Deputy President of NLC, said that the meeting was a tough one that required extensive deliberation.

He said that the labours leaders would go back to brief members on the issues discussed and take a collective decision.

“We cannot take a decision on the ongoing strike action here unless we brief our people and collectively a decision is taken.

“Whatever is our decision would be communicated to the government and the media on Thursday,” he said.

Adeyemi commended the governor for his tolerance and the Assembly for its timely intervention.

Also speaking, Gov. Abiola Ajimobi commended the commitment and maturity displayed by the national leadership of both NLC and NUT.

Ajimobi said that he saw honesty of purpose in the discussion between the parties, expressing optimism that the outcome would be for the progress of the state.

“I have no doubt that we will all succeed at the end,” he said.

NAN also reports that the leadership of the NUT led by its President, Mr Olukoya Alogba, presented the union’s proposals on promoting educational development in the state to the governor.

  • How to improve your diction

    How to improve your diction

Diction is an act of speaking in a distinctive way, the choice of picking words, pronouncing correctly, and the level of articulation. Speaking in the right diction and pronouncing each word according to its sound helps in improving your diction.

A diction instructor, Drew Company Concept, Mr. Andrew Bini highlights ways to improving your diction.

    1. Don’t speak local dialect more than English

There is every tendency that if you speak too much of your local dialect and less of English language, it is necessary that the first language be spoken often and also when pronouncing certain words that are dialect based, if care is not taken, the way we pronounce our dialect based words are the same way we will transfer it to the words that are of English background. So it is necessary we speak less of our dialect and try to change words you are used to pronouncing in your dialect to English.

    2. Focus on what you speak and don’t be distracted

Most times people tend to make jest of others that pronounce words better than they do or in a different way or sound differently from the normal tradition. So whoever wants to work on his diction should not be bothered about what people say, as they would make jest or laugh at you but if you must attain what you want, you should not consider what they say rather what is right.

    3. Constantly use a pronouncing  dictionary

It is important to know that when you are conversant with your dictionary, you can always look up words, get the meaning and pronunciation. If you are able to use it frequently or check up words apart from the fact that it will build the level of your lexicon, it will also help to pronounce words correctly with the transcription given against each word.

The pronouncing dictionary is a type of dictionary that helps the user pronounce given words. So, the English pronouncing dictionary is one that helps the way you pronounce words correctly with the correct stress pattern. Certain words in Nigeria are not pronounced correctly but with a pronouncing dictionary you will be able to tell where the stress is placed.

    4. Work on your rise and fall intonation

The intonation is also another part that helps you to correctly say words the way they should be. A question should fall at the beginning and rise at the end. For instance:

    Are you going?
    Fall         rise
Working on your intonation doesn’t only help you to be a better speaker but helps to also convey your message correctly.

    5. Working on your /ei/ sounds

This has to do with working with words usually called ‘a’ as Nigerians when it should be /ei/. Getting good intonation starts from working on your basic /ei/ sounds. The sound is paramount because that is one of the easiest ways a person will know if your diction is improved or not. For starters, pronounce words that end with ‘ay’ with the /ei/ sound. Play /pleI/, Stay /steI/, Day /deI/ e.t.c.

    6. Never copy others

Never copy others in word pronunciation; sometimes individuals may have difficulty in pronunciations. Other people ignorantly pronounce the ‘ph’ in the word ‘shepherd’,  as /f/ instead of /p/. That an individual speaks with a foreign diction or pronounces words in a different way does not necessarily mean that the person is correct. You may not need to copy others and if need be, then, you need to confirm from your dictionary first to be sure you are copying the right pronunciation.

    7. Practice what you’ve learnt

This is very important. Note that if you learn something and don’t use it, there is every tendency of forgetting or not even knowing it anymore. Whatever you’ve learnt put it into practice. When you do, it will stick or become a part of your sub-conscious mind that even when you are woken up at the middle of the night, you would always speak correctly. Continuous practice they say makes perfect.

    8. Attend trainings and seminars

This is a necessity as it enables you know the basics and fundamentals of speaking good English and becoming a good speaker. From the greetings, letters of the alphabet, the vowel and consonant sounds, place and manner of articulation for each sound, training helps in providing the foundation for diction. At the training, participants have the opportunity to record whatever the speaker says so as to enhance good learning.

  • Effective public speaking and business presentation mastering: The essentials of public speaking

Effective public speaking and business presentation mastering: The essentials of public speaking

There are three things you need to sell yourself in life and reach the peak of success. These are competence, likeability and luck. While competence and likeability will almost always deliver “luck” to you, one potent instrument that is very critical to your ability to advertise your competence and become likeable and “lucky” is the power of effective communication, especially excellent public speaking and presentation skills. This is why an average but articulate and confident candidate often outshines brilliant but inarticulate candidates at oral job interviews.

Sometime ago, a lawyer told me he wanted to attend our public speaking training and I was surprised. He said despite having a second class upper first degree in law as well as a master’s degree in the discipline, he lacked the expected confidence and oratorical competence to speak in public and by implication successfully defend clients in court.

    Current realities

More than ever before, people are now being increasingly called upon to present their information publicly to co-workers, customers, etc. To get ahead, you must make presentation. Being an excellent presenter will enhance your business, career and social life. Organisations from time to time make presentations to existing and prospective customers to sustain and increase their customer base. This means that if your staff cannot display enviable oral (and written) communication skills, your business is paying the price in lost time, lost customers and lost revenues.

    Political necessity and greatest fear

As a politician, for instance, you need to master the art of effective public speaking and persuasive communication to succeed because you must be able to convince the electorate and even win opposition over during electoral campaigns so that they can vote for you.

Research shows that the fear of speaking in public is more than that of death. Yes. For instance, it is not all the people that are ready to join the security forces, despite the risk of untimely death, that are bold enough or ready to speak in public. Yet, speaking effectively in public or making business presentations is inevitable if we must succeed in our business or career. Many people have got retarded career or business growth just because they are afraid to speak in public or make oral business presentations that should have accorded them opportunity to market/sell themselves.

    The courage

Gaining self-confidence and courage as well as the ability to think calmly and clearly while making a presentation is not one-tenth as difficult as most people imagine. There is no reason why you should not be able to think as well in a perpendicular position before your audience as you do when sitting down. In other words, you need to train your brain to think better even when facing an audience. You should not allow their presence to frighten you, rather let it be your source of motivation or inspiration.

    Great public speakers

The fact is that many great public speakers often claim that their brains become more functional whenever they stand before an audience. You can also become an expert too if you are determined to get over your fear through constant practice and training. Do not imagine that your case is unusually difficult. Even those who afterward became the most eloquent representatives of their generation were, at the outset of their careers, afflicted by this blinding fear and self-consciousness.

    Evidence

In the words of Lloyd George, a renowned public speaker, “The first time I attempted to make a public talk, I tell you I was in a state of misery. It is no figure of speech, but literally true, that my tongue clove to the roof of my mouth; and, at first, I could hardly get out a word.”

In a related development, Jean Jaures that was the most eloquent political speaker produced by France in his generation sat for a year, tongue-tied in the Chamber of Deputies before he could summon up the courage to make his initial speech. Also John Bright, the great Briton who defended in England the cause of union and liberation during the civil war made his maiden speech before a group of country folk gathered in a school building, and he was so frightened on the way to the place that he told his friend to start applause to bolster him up whenever he radiated any sign of nervousness.

    Composure

More than ever, people now have to present information to others as part of constant up-dating. People are being increasingly called upon to present their information publicly to co-workers and other departments. To get ahead, you have to present!

But how often are we taught how to present? One major area of skills to presentation is self-management, the ability to remain composed in front of an audience.

Learning this skill makes a huge difference not only to the quality of your public presentation but also to your enjoyment. Truly fantastic presenters are quite a rare commodity because most people have never taken the time to learn. Being an excellent presenter will enhance your career and social life.

  • ‘Suntai has started speaking’

The Senator representing Taraba South, Emmanuel Bwacha, has said Governor Danbaba Suntai, who was involved in a plane crash and flown to Germany, is recovering fast.

Bwacha, who is the governor’s friend, had been with the governor at the Specialist Hospital, Yola, and the National Hospital Abuja, where the governor was taken to before he was flown abroad.

He was also with Suntai at the German hospital. Bwacha returned to Nigeria yesterday.

Bwacha, who spoke to reporters in Jalingo, said: “The governor started speaking before I left for Nigeria. But he has spoken more audibly and clearer on telephone with me now.

“His wife initially spoke with me, and then she handed over the phone to the governor who spoke with a discernible voice.”

Bwacha allayed fears that Suntai would be incapacitated. He dispelled the rumours that the governor has a spinal cord injury and was bleeding from his head.

He said Suntai, at the time of the accident, was injured in the abdomen, had a fracture on the hand and his body was swollen, which made him unconscious.

The lawmaker said: “The governor is recovering fast. He is stabilised now. I am surprised to hear the rumour in Nigeria that he has a problem with his head and spinal cord. It is not true.

“Ideally, a plane crash is not a bicycle accident; he needs time to recover well. In fact, it was by divinity from God that he even survived. Those with evil wishes would be put to shame and would definitely not go unpunished.”

Bwacha said two of the governor’s aides: the Chief Security Officer (CSO), Timo Dangana and Chief Detail Joel Dan, who were also on board the ill-fated Cessna 208 aircraft, have been discharged from the hospital.

“The CSO and the Chief Detail are on their way to Nigeria today (yesterday).

“The governor is now left with his Aide de Camp (ADC), Dasat Iliya, in Germany,” he said.

Suntai was involved in an air crash on October 25. The plane was flown by him.
