Leave Lagos if you like bribe – CP tells DPOs

Lagos State Police Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, on Tuesday warned Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) in the state police command to shun bribery or leave the state. Owoseni stated this during a lecture on Code of Conduct for Law Enforcement Officers at the Police Officers’ Wives’ Association (POWA) Hall, Ikeja.

He warned that the era of impunity and corruption among cops was gone, appealing to his subordinates to come for transfer if they would not want to play by the rules in the state.

He said: “I am tired of hearing about shooting or killing of innocent persons. No one has the right to take another man’s life. It is only God that has the right to take life.

“It is your responsibility as a DPO to know those who are collecting bribe under you. If you refuse to stop them, they will stop you from being a DPO.

“It is embarrassing to see policemen collecting bribes and chasing yahoo yahoo boys for a DPO. I would not cover any DPO. I will expose you. Just leave Lagos before I get to your station. I cannot share out of your misconduct. I will give your photographs and details to journalists to expose you.

“I am shocked to hear that some Area Commanders and DPOs are on the pay rolls of fraudsters. I am investigating. Just pray that I don’t get you. Just know that you are causing pains for taxpayers if you are intimidating them and collecting bribe from criminals.

“It is a curse to build a house with the money. The building would collapse on your head. Some of you even take people to the bank to collect money. If you train your children with the money, they won’t be useful to you.

“If those who were in the force before us bastardized it, we would not have the opportunity to be enlisted in the police. I am tired of pleading with police victims because you are doing what you are not supposed to do. Remember, one day, you are going to die and give account to your creator.

“Go back to your areas of jurisdiction and warn your men against brutality, indiscriminate use of handcuffs on pregnant women, elders and persons with disability.

“Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) should take note. I will not tolerate any act of indiscipline.

“Learn a lesson from DPO Ijeshatedo, who shot dead a fashion designer. He is in our custody and we are compiling charges against him. He would soon be arraigned in court.

“All DPOs in Ikorodu should use all resources within their disposals to fish out Badoo cult group that has been causing havoc in the community. I am giving you all 48 hours to decongest your cells. Nobody should be detained more than 48 hours. I will conduct checks on the cells.

  • Sad Police encounter: ‘I am not proud to be a Nigerian right now’

Sad Police encounter: ‘I am not proud to be a Nigerian right now’

Like a Facebook user, many Nigerians weep every day so bitterly for “a lawless country like ours, citizens are not in any way save in the hands of this disguised rogues claiming to be personnel of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS)” without forgetting the regular Police personnel on the streets.

This Facebook user was responding to the painful account of another Facebook user, Baggy Baggz, a Nigerian based in Pretoria, South Africa, in the hands of the men of SARS during a visit to Delta State, Nigeria.

“With the outcome of everyday daylight brutalities and robbery from the high ups of this organisation to the helpless populace is too much. I dislike the so-called devil in carnets call police with passion, so sorry my brother man in narrating such ugly incident and thank God for what has happened,’ the User said in his comment.

His account (edited for typo errors) below:

    At this moment I AM NOT PROUD TO BE A NIGERIAN, and we all are not anywhere near being safe with any of these so-called “law enforcement”. Please my experience below;

I’m Damilola Adeyanju. On 13/04/2017 a couple of my friends and I travelled to Warri, Delta state for a family friend’s wedding to hold on the 15/04/2017. We decided to stay for some extra days after the wedding to have a feel of Delta state since we hardly leave Lagos normally, and so we left for Lagos on 18/04/2017.

That fateful morning around 6:00 a.m, we (6 of us) got to Greener Line Park and chattered a 7 seater bus. At about 7:45 a.m we took off, got to Sapele express by 8:30 thereabout, we got stopped by SARS officials for stop and search. We all came down and were searched. They then proceeded to our bags where they found a laptop belonging to one of us. They asked for the receipt and the owner told them he’s had it for years and doesn’t have it on him after which they grabbed his phone from him.

Getting to me, I also had my laptop and they requested for the receipt as well, I said I don’t have it on me, then he (SARS guy) called one of his colleagues to take the laptop to their patrol pickup truck and told us to go stand by the truck.

TRENDING: Owoseni to DPOs: Leave Lagos if you like bribe

Another Greener Line bus was stopped and they alighted 4 other guys from it, told them to walk towards us and we all get into the back of the truck. We asked why and the SARS pilot shouted ‘obey before complain’. So they got in and drove us away. Bystanders quickly told the Greener Line drivers and the rest of my friends to go after us, because the so-called SARS people could take us to a bush and probably shoot us and go with our belongings.

Fortunately, my phone was silent and undetected, so my friends were able to reach me and I quietly told them we were still on the same express. The drivers sped up and caught up with us. After driving for about 15mins, we eventually got to a police station (OKUOVO).

The got us out of the truck, walked us into the station, pushed us forcefully behind the counter and told us to sit on the floor. While all these was happening we still didn’t know our offence. The next thing we saw was them bringing out statement forms and called one of the other 4 guys to the front, stripped him off his shirt and was told to sit on the floor. The officer started asking the guy questions and writing the statement for the guy, and at some point started whipping him with wire.

The guy’s back tore and started bleeding from the beating. Out of fear and pain, the guy was saying different stories. I was just sitting on the floor looking at my friend like “o boy I no go take this beating oh, we go die here today if e touch me with that wire.”

RELATED: DPO shoots man dead, injure others in Lagos

Next thing the guy was cuffed and brought back behind the counter. I quickly sent my mom a text message to send me the Commissioner of Police for Lagos state’s number. She called and asked why, I stylishly picked and told her what was up. She panicked and I had to cut the call, she eventually sent the number but unfortunately, myself and my friend were next.

My friend was told to sit on the floor I was told to stand, it was two different officers interrogating us, the statement form was brought out and the officer insisted on writing my friend’s statement. My friend refused but was threatened so he had no choice but to sit back on the floor because they were armed. So I quickly grabbed the pen from the other officer that I was going to write mine myself.

I was asked for my profession and all and I wrote it all down. I’m an Aqua-scaper (construction of aquariums and landscaping). They started asking who could identify my business and I should write the names of my clients, I’m like that has got nothing to do with what’s going on here… They asked for proof of my work I told them I have pictures on my phone showed them, even told them I just came back to Nigeria for this wedding that I’m undergoing a course in South Africa and I showed them proof and he was like they should cuff me, that I’m a cultist and my friend is a kidnapper.

Long story short, we got handcuffed until my friends (the bride’s) mum came to our rescue. The cuffs were later taken off but then they said we were in possession of stolen phones and laptops that they won’t be given back to us until we provide the receipts. I got angry and told him I will provide the receipt on the spot if he can provide that of his phone and he said I was very stupid to question an officer. My friend’s mum cried and begged but fell on deaf ears.

ALSO: Our Girls; VIO dead? Good. Now Police Corruption

I had sneaked the number my mum sent on a piece of paper and passed it to my friends outside. The “SARS” officials eventually drove off with the other cuffed boys still with our laptops and phones. I called the commissioner and he spoke to an officer of that police station (OKUOVO station) and the officer said he doesn’t know the officers that arrested us before he too ran away from the station on his okada, so it was just us left in an empty police station.

We waited till about 6:00 p.m and eventually had to leave cos it was getting dark in the middle of nowhere. We went back to Warri.

On 19/04/2017, at about 6:05 a.m we were back at the Greener Line park to get the bus to take us back to the OKUOVO police station, on getting there it was empty. We decided to head to the same spot we were stopped and eventually got to find them there looking for more preys.

I got out of the bus, called the Assistant Commissioner of Police and approached BISHOP (that’s the only info I could get of him), the leader of the “SARS gang”. He said he didn’t want to talk to anybody and I delivered the message to the Commissioner. He heard me say that, grabbed the phone from me and cut the call. He slammed the phone on my chest and started pushing and kicking me, that I should leave.

While walking away he came towards my back and hit me at the back of my head, as I turned to face him he began slapping me for no reason. At that point I had enough of it, I got angry and raised my hands in self-defense to block the hits then I remembered he had a gun and just walked away.

They eventually got some more innocent people to prey on and drove them to another police station (MOSOGAR) in Delta state. We drove behind them, on getting there I didn’t come down from the bus, my friends and the manager of Greener Line went in with them. They were asked to pay N80,000 before our phones and laptops were returned to us.

I do understand that in life, bad things happen sometimes. What I don’t understand, however, is why as a citizen of this country, I experienced this not at the hands of robbers or thugs, but at the hands of uniformed policemen who my tax cloth and buy arms for.

I am sad, and do hope that perhaps somebody reading this somewhere will recognise these guys and help identify them, not for revenge, but so other unsuspecting helpless citizens don’t get to experience such too at the hands of their supposed policemen “friends”.

The Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command, ACP Olatunji Disu, confirmed the arrest to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Disu said the suspect was arrested by his men posted to Oshodi Oke early Friday morning.

According to the commander, the suspect operate with two others, who are now at large.

“The suspect, Emmanuel John Ugbomah, 37, from Ndukwa, Delta State, was arrested in Oshodi Oke at 12:30 a.m. on Friday while trying to escape after a botched attempt to hijack an Uber taxi, a black Toyota Corrolla, belonging to one Adebisi.

“The suspect, in company of two other accomplices, had boarded Adebisi’s Uber taxi in Lekki.

“They reportedly told the victim they were going to Oshodi for which he charged them N4,000.

“On getting to Ikoyi, the trio told the driver to head to Dolphin where they said they were going to pick a lady friend.

“At Ikoyi, two of the suspects came down from the vehicle and some minutes later, they came back, saying that the female friend was not going to join them and that he should keep driving to Oshodi-Oke.

“While about to climb the Oshodi-Oke bridge, one of them grabbed the driver from the backseat, while another closed his mouth with his hand.

“A gun-like object was pointed at the driver’s head and they were shouting that he should come down and come to the backseat.

“Immediately he unbuckled the seat belt and opened the door, he saw some RRS policemen at the front.

“He ran toward them shouting robbers, robbers.

“The police immediately swung to action after he explained to them that his car was about to be stolen.

“They ran toward the direction of the car and apprehended one, but two escaped,” he said.

Disu said the victim, however, claimed that his mobile phone and a sum of N80,000 were missing.

He said some charms, a master key and a pistol-shaped device were recovered from the suspect, stressing that efforts were being made to arrest others still at large.

Meanwhile, the arrested suspect had been transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Ikeja, for further investigation.

Police discover new kidnappers’ hideout in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command  on Friday said it had discovered  a new kidnappers’  hideout where arms as well as  police and military life jackets were recovered.

The Commissioner of  Police in Lagos, Mr Fatai Owoseni,  who confirmed the discovery to newsmen, said that it was made during raids of creeks at Isawo in  Ikorodu area of Lagos.

Owoseni said  that the hideout was discovered on Thursday by a team of  Ikorodu Special Anti-Robbery  Squad (SARS) and Volunteer Police led by Superintendent Godfrey Soriweiu.

He noted that the success came two weeks after the discovery of a similar hideout in  Isawo.

“In continuation of its onslaught on militants operating from the creeks, Lagos State Police Command early Thursday morning raided and recovered seven army and police bullet-proof vests.

“The teams also recovered eight ballistic helmets and nine life jackets from a new kidnapper’s hideout in Lagos.

“Other item recovered by the team includes a speed boat belonging to the suspected kidnappers, “he said.

He said that the team thereafter destroyed the hideout before moving the recovered items out of the location.

“The suspected kidnappers, who were preparing their morning meal, scampered into safety on sighting the special team,  abandoning several items,” he said.

  • Police demolish criminal hideouts in Ishawo creeks

Police demolish criminal hideouts in Ishawo creeks

Security operatives from the Lagos State Police Command deployed to the riverine area of the Ishawo Community in Ikorodu area of the State on Wednesday commenced total demolition of illegal waterfront shanties within the creeks where criminal elements hibernate to perpetrate their nefarious activities.

The State’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni who briefed journalists in Ishawo on the ongoing operations in the creeks by a combined team of the State Marine Police, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), mobile policemen and the men from the anti-kidnapping squad in coordination with the local vigilante group, said 13 suspected kidnappers have already been arrested and are currently aiding the team to track down the remaining suspects still on the run.

It would be recalled that two weeks ago, four Police Officers and one Army Captain lost their lives after an ambush unleashed on them by suspected militants in Ishawo area.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, while condoling with the families and loved ones of the departed officers, had assured that every perpetrator directly or remotely linked to the dastardly act would be brought to justice in the shortest possible time.

Owoseni said that the Governor immediately ordered a joint operation to hunt down the perpetrators, adding that the operation was yielding positive results.

“So far so good following the attack that occurred at Ishawo where we lost four of our policemen and army captain, we have deployed operatives in the water. What you have seen now is for us to appraise what we have been doing for the past one week. So, quality arrests have been made and we are talking to them because the arrests that were made we believe that we get some evidential value from them, so they are talking to us, at least that makes us to know who we are looking for so that we won’t be just wild catching,” Owoseni said.

The Commissioner of Police who was joined on the inspection of the joint operation to the den of the militants in Ishawo Creeks by the Commander, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Mr. Tunji Disu, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Habib Aruna, security squad leaders and some journalists, said the visit was to appraise the work done so far and the next line of action.

“Earlier this morning, they were able to get to the proper camps of these criminal elements where they saw some of them cooking food who fled immediately they saw the combined team. We just feel that we should take a decision to destroy the camps. The destruction of the camps are ongoing, that is why we are here and the officers that are handling the destruction of the camps, they are right inside the creeks now and at the end of the day, they would share the story as they finish that operations, but our movement here is just for you to see the terrain and see what the security operatives are facing with regards to policing this environment and that is why we are clamouring for the destruction of these shanties”, Owoseni said.

Owoseni said that one of the suspected militants died during a fierce encounter with the Intelligence Response team of the Inspector General of Police, assuring residents in the area that they would go all out to ensure that they fish out all criminal elements in the State.
“We still want to assure members of the public that these people have murdered sleep and they will not sleep, we will make sure that all of them are rooted out and that they face the full wrath of the law.

“The 13 suspects we have, we are interrogating them and they are making useful statements for us and we are making progress and you can see that helicopter surveillance is also supporting all what we are doing but we want to assure members of the public around this axis that the government is ready, the security agents are ready to ensure that we put an end to the madness of these criminal elements,” the Commissioner of Police said.

He said the Police have gathered necessary information on the perpetrators still on the run, assuring that one by one, they would be arrested and be made to face the full wrath of the law.

He commended the synergy of the combined efforts of the security operatives, just as he added that the efforts of the local vigilante groups who are familiar with the terrain was critical to the operation especially in aiding to navigate the hideouts of the militants.

“I want use this opportunity to thank the civilian men that have decided to join us and take us to navigate the water and also give us a lead to the centre of activities which is the creek where these criminal elements have been hibernating,” Owoseni said.

  • Armed robbers shot dead in Lagos

Armed robbers shot dead in Lagos

A group of armed robbers on Monday caused chaos on Okunola Road, Idimu area of Lagos State after they allegedly attacked a police inspector.
The three-man gang, which rode on a motorcycle to carry out their operation were said to have robbed the inspector, after coming out from a bank in that area.

They reportedly shot the inspector on the jaw and snatched away his money.

However, a Police patrol team attached to the Anti-Pipeline Vandalism Intelligence Unit at Idimu engaged the robbers in a shootout in their attempt to escape from the scene, killing two of the robbers.

The injured police inspector was rushed to the nearby general hospital.

The Police Public Relations officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Dolapo Badmos, told reporters that the surviving member of the gang, Gafaru Ismail, has been arrested and taken to Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) Ikeja.

The PPRO also stated that two pistol guns were recovered from the robbers.

  • Dismissed Police Officer raises alarm over alleged injustice

Dismissed Police Officer raises alarm over alleged injustice

A 33-year old Corporal, Godwin Otu, dismissed in the line of duty has called on Federal Government and civil society organisations to urgently intervene on his matter.

The officer accused the Nigerian Police Force of injustice despite being sent on an official assignment over a case of kidnapping.

Otu, who had spent about nine years in the force, is currently detained in the facility of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Abuja.

The dismissed officer during an interaction with The Nation in Abuja‎, said he was asked to lead three men team on an official duty following a reported case of kidnapping on 24th November, 2014.

He explained that two ladies, Nwanfo Okechukwu and one other were kidnapped by an unknown group, allegedly led by late Police Corporal, Manasa Akenye but one of the ladies was released to pay a N150, 000 ransom.

Otu noted that getting to scene of the incident, the kidnappers opened fire at their patrol team dispatched by the Divisional Police Officer, (DPO), Enugu Central Police station, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Ike Mba, which led to exchange of fire.

According to him, one of the masterminds of the kidnap, who was shot, incidentally happened to be a policeman, having confessed upon his arrest.

His words: “On the 24th November, 2014, I was at the station when two ladies came to the office and complain that they kidnapped two of them but one of them was released and one was still being held hostage, they demanded money, they paid N150, 000. They freed one of them remaining one

“After making the complaint at the counter, the DPO CSP Ike Mba ordered me and two other police officers to follow me to the scene. He gave me a vehicle and a rifle. On getting to that scene, ‎the kidnappers sighted us and opened fire and I responded. Unfortunately, one of them was shot, so the gang were tried to pick him but the man was restless. They only picked the victim’s rifle and left, they were like four with the driver making five.

“So, my colleagues and I picked the kidnapper to the station where we met our DPO‎ at Central Police Station in Enugu State, but he is retired now. He interrogated the victim. That was when the victim said he is a policeman serving in State Provost, Enugu state Command, his name is Manasa Akenye, he was a PC then. He asked us to search him, we searched him.

“We recovered the kidnapped girl’s phone from him and his personal phone that he was using to communicate with family of the girl, who was asked to bring the ransom. The DPO now asked the IPO to take Akenye to the Sparkling Hospital Enugu. They took him there, on getting to the hospital, they met the doctor who started the treatment and the man’s statement was recorded. He later died.”

He said upon investigations, superior officers in the force concluded there was no case as the accused officers have performed their duty effectively.

Yet, the case was later revisited upon continuous pressure from family of the deceased officer.

He revealed that on July, 2015, next of kin to the late police officer claimed that an officer, PC Ada Ochechi, who was part of the team called to accuse him of murder.

Narrating his ordeal further, he explained that they were put on trial at the Force Headquarters, Abuja under the supervision of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Monitoring Unit, adding that the two kidnapped ladies were invited by his family to testify, but denied the access to testify at the police hearing by the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) ASP Sunday Idowu.

“When they brought us here (Force Headquarter), they said they should try us at the HQ. The IPO said he would tell the trial police officer on what to do. After, they tried us and they recommended me for dismissal, the two other officers were released because they were constable and they did not carry any rifle.

“The people that we rescued and the girl that came to the station to complain came here but the ASP Idowu asked them to go back that when they are needed, they will be called. When we went for the trial again the next day, they asked for the testifiers, we said we brought them but they were asked to go back.

“So the officer in charge of the trial said he did not have anything to say again since we could not provide the ladies. We pleaded with him; we only succeeded by calling the girl that came to the station to complain about the case. She narrated everything that happened, after all those things, the man that read the judgment said the way they kidnapped the girl was so mild,” adding that “how can they kidnapped the girl in a broad-day light? How can they open fire without any bullet shot on the vehicle? On his final judgment, he recommended me for dismissal.”

“They detained three of us but they later released, PC Ada Ochechi and PC Joshua Omeje while I’m still here in detention.”

Otu wondered why he should still remain in detention, even after the trial. He alleged it is on record at the Enugu station several criminal offences the deceased officer, whose father happened to be a police officer committed.

‎“The kidnapper that was killed even has criminal record in the command, he has pending trial. On the 23rd June, they said they had send my dismissal signal to my command, now they have directed them to take me back to my command so that they can charge me to court, since then getting to a month now, they have been keeping me here getting to three months now”

During the investigation, The Nation met with the IPO, Idowu Sunday but directed this correspondent to the Force spokesperson. He refused to make comment.

After 48 hours of consistent effort to meet the Force spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Don Awunah, explained the accused might have presented a one sided story.

He said the Police have a special process when an issue of such occurs.

“The police have three different set of trials depending on the offence committed just like court martial. Since he has been dismissed, the case will be with the ministry of justice. They will look into it and further present to the attorney general of the federation who will then make final recommendation. So, that is how it works. There is nothing we can do here. It pains us more when one of us faces this kind of situation,” he added.

  • Policemen, others arrested for ‘armed robbery’

The Police in Lagos have arrested some of its personnel including one Sergeant Victor Omorokai, who allegedly hijacked a 20 feet container at the weekend in Ogun State.

Also arrested were three civilians, including a supposed buyer of the container laden with auto spare-parts.

It was gathered that the policemen numbering four, all attached to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti-Yaba, on Saturday night blocked the container with their Sienna car.

The Nation gathered that they pretended to be officers on duty and flanked the heavy duty vehicle down.

As soon as the driver stopped, they were said to have pointed a gun at him and his conductor, ordering them out of the trailer.

The suspects were said to have detoured the container to Abbatoir, where they contacted a prospective buyer who came and inspected the goods but did not buy.

Unknown to the suspects, the trailer conveying the container had a car tracking device and was being monitored by its owners.

It was learnt that a distress call was made to the police informing the agency about the incident and notifying it that the trailer had a tracking device.

“The police then started monitoring their location as they were moving and tracked them to Agege. Three police units made of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Safer Highways and the Okokomaiko Police Division were deployed.

“The teams blocked the various entry and exit points. The suspects contacted another buyer and was moving towards Okokomaiko when the police stopped the container.

“At first, they pretended they were policemen who arrested the truck but when they saw that they were in trouble they started shooting. While three of them managed to escape, Sergeant Victor Omorokai was arrested. Three civilians have also been arrested in connection with the crime,” said a  police source.

The Nation gathered that an Inspector was among the fleeing suspects and that the case was transferred to SARS for discreet investigation.

Confirming the arrest, the state command’s spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos said: “They (suspects) were trailed to Okokomaiko where they were arrested. The case is still under discreet investigation.”

  • Ebonyi police smash kidnap ring

    Ebonyi police smash kidnap ring

THE Ebonyi State police command has recorded made some progress, a major part of which is smashing a kidnap gang.

The gang was said to have carried out their nefarious activities long enough to claim several victims of both sexes of various ages.

In its resolve to respond to this disturbing trend, the command fashioned out strategies through undercover operations involving a coalition of its Anti-Kidnapping Squad, Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and Campus Monitoring Unit (CMU) to go after and fish out the miscreants.

The efforts appear to be paying off as the command has smashed the kidnap gangs responsible for the various kidnapping incidents in the state.

Acting on reliable intelligence at the disposal of the command, the crack teams put in place, painstaking and diligently swooped on the meeting points and residences of the identified suspects and arrested most of them.

Eleven of the suspects have been paraded at the command headquarters in Abakaliki by the State Commissioner of Police, Maiogari Dikko.

Among those paraded are the gang leader, Nnaemeka Nkpuechina and another suspect.

He was found in possession of an Ak-47 riffle snatched from a policeman in Afikpo South Local Government Area.

“Nnaemeka, 30, the gang leader is a native of Abagana in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State but resides at Goddy Ogbaga Avenue, Abakaliki Ebonyi State. He claims to be an electrician,” Mr. Dikko said.

According to the Commissioner, who was represented by the Command’s spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Chris Anyanwu other gang members arrested included a 29-year-old motorcycle operator, Amobi Igwe (a.k.a Awillo),  who hails from Umuoru, Oriuzor in Ezza North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Others are Okwudili Odo, 25, a native of Ihenyi Ehamufu Anambra State but lives in Umuoru Oriuzor, Ezza North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, also a motorcycle operator: Ikechukwu Ude, 31, a bus driver who shuttles between Onitsha and Awka and who is a native of Nenwe Town, Ani Nri Local Government Area of Enugu State but resides in Abagana, Anambra State.

Also paraded was one Azuka Uduji, 33, a native of Idemili, Anambra State. She is a wife of a notorious criminal, Obinna Uduji who is currently serving a fresh jail term in Enugu Federal Prisons.

“While in prison, he connects the wife to the gang for their operation and at the end of every operation; his share of ransom collected from their victims is paid through the wife’s bank account. She buys stolen vehicles”, the CP said.

The command also paraded one Ikechukwu Nwokpoku; a 30-year-old man and a native of Oriuzor, Ezza North Local Government Area who snatched the rifle from a policeman in Afikpo South Local Government Area at gunpoint and Uchenna Nweze also of Oriuzor, Ezza North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. Nweze is said to be the gang’s armourer and sells 10 rounds of live ammunition at N10, 000.

Nwafor David, 33, and Onyebuchi Edeh, 27, were also paraded. The duo were said to have kidnapped an octogenarian, Pa Michael Agara of Ndi Okpoto Village in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State and collected N600, 000 ransom from the victim’s family which was recovered by the police in a heap of sharp sand where it was buried in a block industry, located along Afikpo Road, Abakaliki and owned by Nwafor David.

ASP Chris Anyanwu said the suspects also kidnapped one Dr. Christopher Onwe and Mrs. Edith Ogwe at Democracy Estate Abakaliki and held them hostage in a bush at Oriuzor, Ezza North Local Government Area.

He said the suspects collected N400,000 ransom for the release of the victims and that the money was dropped in Ugwuagba, Oji-River Local Government Area, Enugu State.

Anyanwu further disclosed that the gang also kidnapped a Pastor’s wife, one Mrs. Aniamaka Christopher also at Democracy Estate, Abakaliki and held her hostage at Oriuzor while N300, 000 ransom was collected for her release which was dropped at Spera-in-deo Junction, Abakaliki.

He said Kia Rio Saloon car with registration number EK487BEN, ATM cards and mobile phones stolen from the victim were recovered by the police, adding that the hoodlums used the victim’s ATM and withdrew N100, 000 cash from her account.

“The suspects also kidnapped one Mrs. Geraldine Egwu of 4, Fedi Ogodo Street, Water Works Road Abakaliki and held her captive in one of the hoodlum’s houses in Oriuzor while N500, 000 ransom was dropped in Oji-River for her release,” he said.

He listed other exhibits recovered from the suspects to include Nissan Titan open Jeep with Reg. No. KSF 576 CW, Toyota Camry, ML 320 Mercedes Benz Jeep, AK-47 rifle with breech number 56-2529721, 10 rounds of ammunition and sim cards of different GSM service providers.

    Gang’s modus operandi

ASP Anyanwu said: “The gang assembles at Spera-in-deo Junction in Abakaliki from where they take off for operation. They usually do not have any particular target in mind but hunt for flashy cars. Their preferred area of operation is Democracy Estate due to its lonely nature and being an easy escape route out of town.

“The miscreants also choose to hide their victims at an identified isolated site located in Ezza North; being the native place of two of the gang members. While keeping their victims hostage, they collect their ATM cards and go to banks and withdraw all the money in their accounts. The four victims they kidnapped suffered this ordeal.”

Continuing, he said: “The worrisome angle to this heinous crime is that a jailbird, Obinna Uduji currently serving a fresh jail term at Enugu Prisons happens to be a very active member of the notorious gang.

“While in prison, Obinna Uduji monitors and directs the operation of the gang through phone calls. He transacts the business of buying stolen vehicles through his wife, Azuka Uduji, who resides at Onitsha, Anambra State. His share of every ransom collected was paid into his wife’s account from where she transacts the buying and disposal of the stolen vehicles.

“The lessons learnt from the revelations made by cracking down the hoodlums should serve as security warning for members of the public. Let us take the issue of our personal security serious.”

One of the suspects, Nnaemeka Nkpuechina told our reporter that he was arrested for kidnapping one Miss Ebele Okeke and that he led the operation.

He said the lady was driving along the road when the suspects swooped on her and drove her with the vehicle to a health centre in Oriuzor, Ezza North where she was held captive.

Nkpuechina revealed that he has kidnapped four persons since he started the business of kidnapping, adding that the gang usually collects N500, 000 ransom from every kidnapped victim.

On her part, Mrs. Azuka Uduji said her husband gave her somebody’s phone number to send money to and was on the way to meet the person when policemen arrested her.
