    Pupils shine at Coker-Aguda Spelling Bee competition

    The Spelling Bee competition organised by Coker-Aguda Local Council Development Area (LCDA) brought together brilliant minds from primary and secondary schools across the council.

    The event, held at the Council Secretariat Hall, created a vibrant atmosphere as students showcased their spelling skills and intellectual abilities.

    The competition was moderated by Mrs. Adetola Pinheiro, a retired principal with decades of experience in the education sector. Contestants displayed remarkable focus, determination, and confidence, spelling even the most intricate words with impressive ease.

    In her opening remarks, wife of the council chairman, Mrs. Muibat Ogidan, encouraged the pupils to remain committed to learning.

    She noted that success is about effort, not just winning.

    Head of Education and Library Services, Mr. Taiwo Adejumo, emphasised the value of participation over competition, stating: “Whether you win or not, the real courage lies in your participation.”

    In the primary school category, Miss Obiorah Chikaima emerged as the winner, while Masters Orji Philip and Alameen Omokehinde claimed the first and second runner-up positions respectively.

    In the secondary school category, Samuel Emmanuel secured the top prize, with Chima Chinecherem and Nwokeocha Favour emerged as first and second runners-up.

    Special recognition was also given to outstanding participants for their dedication and commitment to academic excellence.

    The event was graced Vice Chairman Mathew Olaleye, management team, teachers, and pupils from participating schools.

  • MTN sponsors first ever Lagos State Private Schools Spelling Bee competition

    In a bid to satisfy the yearning for improved English grammar skills in the youth educational sector of Nigeria, MTN Nigeria through its tween and teen proposition, mPulse is sponsoring the first ever private school leg of the Lagos State Spelling Bee competition. From Monday, June 10, 2019, the first batch of the intra-school competition began across 70 private schools in Lagos State, with the second batch of the competition slated for October, this year.

    The second phase will usher a three-week inter-school competition, which will have schools compete in various Districts, culminating in a grand finale during the last quarter of the year. Ifako International School; Barachel Schools; Chrisland Schools; Caleb International School; Dansol High School; CTC School, etc, are among the over 37 schools that have competed so far in the keenly contested Spelling Bee.

    The champion will, among other gifts, ultimately become the first kid-CEO of MTN Nigeria, as MTN Chief Executive Officer, Ferdi Moolman, will welcome the winner to occupy his seat for one day.

    Speaking on MTN’s sponsorship of the competition, Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer, MTN Nigeria, Rahul De, said “the importance of a competition that enables young minds to exercise their creativity in English Grammar cannot be overemphasized. This will help thousands of students improve their spelling knowledge, increase their vocabulary, learn a variety of concepts and develop correct English usage that will set them apart and expand their opportunities.”

    He shared his excitement about the competition; “The Lagos State Private Schools Spelling Bee is a great way to encourage a reading culture in our children and as we know, readers are leaders. We have found a way to encourage these future leaders to strive for even more.”

  • Winners emerge in Rotary’s Spelling Bee contest

    Winners have emerged in the yearly Spelling Bee Competition held by Rotary International District 9110. They are Miss Nicole Okpala of Mayors Heights College, first position; Daniella Moseri, also of Mayors Heights College, second position and Ibrahim Olapade of Oregun Senior High School, Ikeja, Lagos, who came third.

    Eight schools slugged it out in the over one hour event. They were represented by two pupils each.  Besides Mayors Heights College and Oregun Senior High School, the other schools were Command Day Secondary School, Ikeja, Charles Lorie French College, Eko Akete Senior Grammar School, Olomu High School, David Hall School, and Oxbridge Tutorial College.  The pupils answered over 100 questions drawn from several subjects.

    Rotary International District (9110) Governor Kola Sodipo expressed satisfaction with the schools’ turnout and the contestants’ performance. He said the aim of the contest was to boost the spirit of participation and learning. He said there was no end to learning, adding that both the young and the old learn until throughout life. He reiterated that contest would help the participants to improve their vocabulary.

    District Interact Committee Chairperson Kate Wilkie said 20 schools expressed their willingness to participate in the contest. She said the participants were Interact members, a junior arm of Rotary and that the event was one of the focal areas of Rotary: education, which has as its objective improvement of pupils’ intellect. There are 103 Interact clubs, the latest being Oxbridge, she added. She advised the pupils to study hard.

    Her deputy Sola Benson said the contest was the second edition being held by Rotary. He said it was Rotary’s expectation that the winners would become future leaders.  He advised those who lost to study hard for future contest.

  • Spelling Bee Competition: Chairperson tells contestant to work harder

    The wife of the Executive Chairman of the Badagry Local Government and Chairperson of the Spelling Bee Competition of the local government chapter, Mrs Mojisola Onilude, has called on the overall winner of the local government chapter of the Spelling Bee Competition,  Master Akinfenwa Akeem Oriyomi of Methodist Senior High School, Badagry, to break the jinx of producing a One- Day Governor of the state by the local government chapter in the final stage of the competition in the state.

    Mrs Onilude gave this charge at the end of the final stage of the local government chapter of the competition during the week.

    She said the highest position the local government chapter had held since the inception of the competition founded by the then First Lady of Lagos State, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, in 2009 was the One -Deputy Governor’s position.

    “The highest we have ever achieved was two years ago when our local government chapter was privileged to win the One-Day Deputy Governor’s position  when Miss Rosemary Ogidan from Methodist Senior High School, Badagry, came second at the state final. I am optimistic our representative for the final stage of the competition in the state is prepared to make us proud by surpassing this mark,” she said.

    Onilude advised him to  put in his best at the final stage of the competition in the state to bring the elusive laurel to the local government.

  • Spelling Bee contest winner named

    Winners have emerged in the Spelling Bee competition held by Alimosho Local Government Area.  Johnpaul Njemnaobi of Shasha Nursery/Primary School took the first position while Daniel Akwomakou of Shasha Community High School led in the secondary school category.

    Twelve schools comprising eight primary and four secondary schools participated in the competition which held at the Council’s secretariat.

    The Chairman of the council, Mr Jelil Sulaimon said the aim of the competition was to improve the pupils’ skills in spellings and dictation, adding that many of them are poor in this area. He recalled that during his tenure as executive secretary in 2016, the local government won the one- day governor prize when it came first in the entire state, even as he urged the pupils to repeat the feat.

    Wife of the council chairman Hadia Kabirat Sulaimon advised the competitors to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship. She added that contests made students to perform better in their studies. “Healthy competitions boost one’s talent, skills and inculcate the qualities of sportsmanship,’’ she added.

    Master Oluwafemi Olasehinde of Shasha Community High School, who was the one-day governor in 2016, advised the pupils to regard challenges as part of their contests.

    “Plan, prepare prayerfully and proceed positively. Don’t panic. The competition is easy,’’ he said.

    Winners of the keenly contested Spelling Bee Competition, Miss Zuffon Bukola and Miss Rosemary Ogidan, One-Day Governor, Deputy Gover of Lagos State have awarded a full scholarship as well as N1million each by the State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode.

    Zuffon, a 16 year-old SS 2 student of Awodiora Senior Secondary School, Ajegunle emerged the One-Day Governor of the State after she won a keenly contested Spelling Bee Competition in June 2017, while Ogidan, also an SS 2 student of Methodist Senior High School, Badagry finished as runner up.

    Receiving the winners, Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday expressed optimism that in no distant time, Lagos would produce its first elected female Governor of the State. 

    Governor Ambode, who spoke when he received the One-Day Governor of the State, Miss Zuffon Bukola and members of her cabinet at the Exco Chambers, Lagos House in Ikeja, said that the emergence of Miss Zuffon and the One-Day Deputy Governor, Miss Rosemary Ogidan was a signpost to what the future portends for the State.
      
    According to the Governor, the emergence of two females as One-Day Governor and Deputy Governor of the State clearly indicates that a female can likewise be elected as the Governor of the State.
     
    He said: “This is a significant day for Lagos State and it also signals what the future actually holds for Lagos State in which we have seated here, two female strong members of the new State Executive Council and we have a female Governor and a female Deputy Governor.
     
    “It is also telling us a story about what the future of Lagos is all about that one day we would find seated here, not just a day governor, but for a period or tenure of four years, there would be a female Governor in this State.
     
    “We’ve had female Deputy Governors in this State; it also says something that these younger ones are telling our women in Lagos to rise up and actually take their position.”
     
    Governor Ambode also commended Zuffon and her cabinet members, noting that their feat was an indication that the funds expended by the State Government to improve the educational sector was not in vain, adding that efforts would be intensified to further develop the sector.
     
    “I want to congratulate her and her cabinet members for also showing to us that the future of education in Lagos is strong. We believe that the resources we are spending in the educational sector are not going to be a waste and they have also shown that they are ready to succeed us as long as we encourage them.
     
    “So we’ll do everything just like what we have been doing in the last two years to continue to pay greater attention to education and also make sure that we do so much in youth development to allow them to be mentally capable of succeeding us even as we move away from all the things we have done in the public service,” the Governor said.
     
    He said the State Government was encouraged by the exploits of past One-Day Governors and their cabinet members who are excelling in their various endeavours, just as he commended parents of the students as well as the school management for all the efforts put into bringing out the best in them.
     
    To encourage their efforts, Ambode awarded full scholarship to the One Day Governor, Miss Zuffon and her Deputy, Miss Ogidan while also announcing a cash donation of N1million each to them.
     
    The governor also awarded a cash donation of N500,000 each to members of the One Day Governor’s cabinet consisting of Master Tovishede Ayobami (Secretary to the State Government); Master Philip Daniel (Speaker of the House of Assembly); Master Durojaiye Oluwasegun (Commissioner for Education); Master Atabo Ufedojo (Commissioner for Science and Technology).
     
    Earlier, Miss Zuffon while addressing the governor and members of the State Executive Council commended the Governor for his visionary leadership and numerous achievements especially in the educational sector, saying that despite the economic challenges, teachers’ salaries and entitlements were being paid as at when due.
     
    Zuffon, who is aspiring to become a lawyer, also seized the occasion to request for a School Bus, renovation of the school’s multipurpose hall as well as construction of drainage channels in her school, which Governor Ambode immediately granted.

    Winners emerge in Spelling Bee competition

    Winners have emerged at the Spelling Bee competition organised for pupils in Agbado/Oke Odo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State.
    Over 70 pupils drawn from about 40 public elementary and secondary schools participated in the competition.
    In the primary school category, Daniel Johnson of Ifesowapo Primary School, Aboru, emerged winner, while Judith Nwachukwu of African Church Primary School, Alagbado, and Michael Shipeolu of Alimosho Primary School, Iyana Ipaja, were the first and second runners up.
    In the secondary school category, Nnona Emmanuel of the Lagos State Model Senior Secondary School, clinched first position; Latunde Emmanuel and Kehinde Adeshina of Alagbado Junior Grammar School settled for second and third respectively.
    Speaking at the event, wife of the council’s Sole Administrator, Mrs Anthonia Akande, explained that the objective of the competition was to bring out the best in the pupils and ‘’to improve their spelling skills, vocabulary and develop correct English usage.’’
    The Sole Administrator, Sola Akande, urged the winners to make the council proud at the finals of the competition.

    We’re on course to transform education sector – Ambode

    Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Friday expressed delight at the winning of the annual Spelling Bee Competition by students of public schools in the State, saying that the development was an eloquent testimony that his administration is on the right path to transform the education sector.

    Governor Ambode, who spoke at the Lagos House, Ikeja while hosting the 16th One-day Governor, Master Olaseinde Olufemi Joshua and members of his cabinet, said the fact that winners of the competition emerged from public schools in inner communities was a clear indication that public schools in the State are now becoming exemplary citadel of learning.

    He said: “I must say that I am impressed about the mixture of the people that we are now celebrating. I can personally say that I did watch the school debate on television and I am very excited that the schools from which the winners emerged are from our inner communities in Shasha in Alimosho, Badagry, Ilupeju and also in Mushin.

    “That in itself shows that we are on the right path. We must be able to show that our public schools are exemplary citadel of learning that we can also use to showcase the fact that the future of Lagos is brighter than what we have now,” Governor Ambode said.

    While congratulating the winners of the competition for doing the State proud, Governor Ambode said the competition was one of the ways of encouraging younger ones to venture into position of leadership, adding that development would also go a long way in preparing the students for position of leadership in the future.

    He added: “We want to say that the six winners we are celebrating today are worthy to be celebrated and we will indeed celebrate them and use them as examples to encourage other younger ones to reach out so that we can be proud that in another twenty years, these ones will take over from us and we would be proud that we really did the State proud.”

    Besides, the Governor congratulated the State’s Ministry of Education and other stakeholders for sustaining the initiative which started about 16 years ago, and called for the scaling up of the initiative to accommodate more younger students.

    Earlier, the One-day Governor, Master Olaseinde Olufemi Joshua, a student of Shasha Community Senior High School saluted the vision of the wife of former Lagos State Governor, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who was the pioneer of the Spelling Bee competition, saying that the competition had helped students in the State to be more dedicated to their studies and strive for excellence.

    He added that the competition would not have been possible without the free education policy of the Lagos State Government over the years, which is being sustained by the present administration.

    Speaking on Governor Ambode’s administration, Master Joshua said: “Barely a year after taking over the reign of power as the Governor of the State, Lagosians have witnessed a rapid transformation of infrastructural facilities and integrated lighting system. There is no gainsaying that Lagosians’ dream of becoming Africa’s model megacity is becoming into reality through your hard work and dedication.

    “This is evident in your meticulous implementation of various developmental programmes. I can easily predict that our visionary Governor Ambode will take Lagos State to the promise land within his first tenure in office,” he said.

    Master Joshua, who said his father could not make it to the event due to health challenges, however, urged the Governor to consider donating a school bus, a well-equipped E-library to his school and the rehabilitation of drainage systems as well as the roads leading to his school.

    Responding, Governor Ambode granted the request for a school bus in Joshua’s school and all other requests in respect of the other schools of the winners.

    He also ordered that Joshua’s father be treated at the health facilities of the State Government.

    Other winners are One-day Deputy Governor, Komolafe Kehinde of Immaculate Heart Senior High School, Maryland; One-day Speaker, Okinbaloye Rashidat of Ilupeju Senior Grammar School; One-day Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Ogunfowora Islamiyat of Badagry Senior Grammar School; One-day Commissioner for Education, Abdulkarim Asiyat of Atunrase Senior High School and One-day Commissioner for Science and Technology, Ahwanyinu Sesinu of Kakon Senior Secondary School.

  • Boy, 11, wins Spelling Bee Competition

    Eleven-year old Philip Daniel of Darocha Primary School, Agege has emerged the overall winner of the 16th edition of the Lagos State Spelling Bee Competition, primary category.

    Master Daniel defeated Titus Friday of Anglican Primary School, Ajegunle and Nafisat Raji of Ahmadiyah Primary School, Yaba to second and third positions.

    Daniel was rewarded with N150, 000 cash prize and Trophy. Titus got N100, 000 while Nafisat went home with N75, 000. The fourth and fifth placed winners also got consolation prizes.

    State Universal Basic Education Board, (SUBEB) Executive Chairman Dr Ganiyu Sopeyin congratulated the winners and all the participants for displaying brilliance, urging them not to rest on their oars.

    He also praised the teachers who prepared the pupils for the competition for a job well done.

    Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr Adesina Odeyemi, said the competition demonstrates the government’s commitment to quality education in Lagos State.
