    ‘Spelling bee strengthens pupils’ educational foundation’

    The wife of the Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Chairman, Mrs. Adebimpe Jakande, has described the spelling bee competition as an avenue that strengthens the educational foundation of children and promotes reading culture.

    She said this during the Spelling Bee Competition, held at council secretariat.

     She said: “The spelling bee competition is more than just a contest; it is a celebration of learning, discipline, and creativity. It strengthens the educational foundation of our children, ignites their potential, and promotes a vibrant culture of reading and self-expression.”

    Mrs. Jakande said the  competition  which was initiated by  the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi aligns with the  administration’s Educational Restoration Policy.

    She added that the  council has  continued to  invest in education through initiatives such as the distribution of back-to-school materials, the Jako Jollof Feeding, and the establishment of solar-powered ICT centres to equip students with digital skills.

    She encouraged the pupils to continue striving for excellence, noting that their courage and hard work already made them winners.

    “Whether or not you take home a trophy today, your presence here is proof of your dedication and determination,” she said.

    Mrs. Jakande, while commending the pupils for their courage and preparation urged parents to prioritise their children’s education.

    “Parents in our community sometimes involve their children too much in housework, which takes away from their study time.

    House chores are important, but schoolwork must come first,” she said.

    Adegboye Adetolani, a Primary 5 pupil from Local Government Primary School, Idi-Oro, emerged as the winner in the primary category. Aina Heritage from Ransome Kuti Memorial Senior Grammar School emerged as the winner in the secondary category.

    A teacher, Ms. Olarewaju Oluwatoyin, thanked the council chair’s wife for the opportunity, admitting that the experience were both challenging and rewarding.

    The wife of of Ikeja Local Government Chairman, Mrs. Fausat Dauda, has reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to promoting quality education and nurturing academic excellence among pupils within the council area.

    She made this known while addressing participants and guests at the preliminary stage of the 2025 Spelling Bee Competition, held at the Ikeja Local Government Secretariat, Ikeja, yesterday.

    Mrs. Dauda described the Spelling Bee as “a remarkable platform designed by the Lagos State Government to showcase the spelling skills, intellect, and confidence of pupils and students across the state.”

    She announced that the winner of the primary school category would serve as One-Day Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, while the first and second runners up would assume the positions of Vice Chairman and Leader of the Legislative Arm respectively.

    “It’s a way to motivate them and let them know that excellence comes with responsibility and recognition,” she added.

    According to her, the competition, which had been inactive for some time but is now fully restored, represents “a celebration of language, learning, and the incredible dedication of our young learners.”

    She explained that the Spelling Bee serves as a preparatory ground for pupils to face future academic challenges, in line with the directives of the Office of Education Quality Assurance, under the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.

    Mrs. Dauda noted that each of the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) across Lagos State is mandated to conduct the preliminary stage of the competition to select outstanding representatives for the state finals.

    “At Ikeja Local Government, we believe in transparency and objective representation. This is why our Education Department, in collaboration with the Quiz Team, visited each of the eight public primary schools to conduct the intra-school stage. The best three pupils from each school are the contestants you see here today,” she said.

    Mrs. Dauda urged the winners to give their best performances and embrace sportsmanship at the grand finale of the competition.

    “Not everyone can emerge as the winner. But every participant here today is already a champion. Those who do not win this time should take it in good faith, as greater opportunities will still come their way,” she said.

    She also used the occasion to highlight her husband’s administration’s recent educational support initiatives.

    She recalled the ‘Back to School’ distribution exercise, during which school bags, notebooks, mathematical sets, and water bottles were given to pupils in public primary and junior secondary schools within the local government.

    She explained that the gesture was part of efforts to cushion the effects of the current economic situation on parents, especially those of indigent pupils, and reaffirmed that more educational interventions were underway as dividends of democracy.

    Mrs. Dauda expressed appreciation to teachers and education officers for their dedication to nurturing pupils and making the event a success, adding “We can see the impact of your hard work on these children. Beyond human appreciation, I believe the Almighty God will reward you abundantly.”

    Miss Zainab Ismail, who emerged as the overall winner, said: “I feel good. My mummy gave me time to learn, and my auntie encouraged me.”

    She thanked her family and teachers for their support and advised her colleagues to “keep studying hard and never give up.”

    Two pupils win laurels in council’s spelling bee

    Two pupils of Jamatul Islamiyah Primary School, Sanni Amira, and Igbinedion Dara of Agbara Community Senior Secondary School, have won the spelling bee organised by Eti-Osa Local Government.

    Twenty schools, comprising nine primary and 11 senior secondary schools in Eti-Osa took part in the competition.

    In her remarks, council Chair, Adeola Adetoro, said the pupils had made the council and state proud.

    She lauded their dedication, and praised the teachers for ensuring the pupils delivered on what they had been taught.

    “I applaud the pupils for their performance in the spelling bee. The time and effort put into teaching them are yielding results. It’s also important to appreciate the teachers, who worked and contributed to the success story, “ she said.

    Winners in the primary section are Sanni Amira from Jamatul Islamiyah Primary School (first); Cecilia Moses from Ilasan Primary School (second); and Ummi Jordan from Ikota Primary School (third).

    Winners in the senior section are Igbinedion Dara, of Agbara Community Senior Secondary School (first); Olabode Eyinjuoluwa, of Ilasan Senior Secondary School (second); and Bassey Essien, of Agbara Community Senior Secondary School (third).

    Adetoro urged the winners to represent Eti-Osa well at the state and bring laurels home.

    She also gave gifts to the winners of a pre-contest spelling exercise.

    The Chairman of Ayobo-Ipaja Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Lukmon Agbaje, has said pupils stand to benefit many things by participating in the Spelling Bee Competition.

    The competition was introduced in Lagos State by First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, during her husband’s tenure as Governor of Lagos State.

    Speaking during the event, which had the participation of pupils from primary and secondary schools in the council, Agbaje said the competition was more than just a spelling contest.

    He added that the competition revives the dying reading culture and encourages excellence among the pupils.

    “This spelling bee is about building confidence, promoting a reading culture, and encouraging excellence among our children. Education remains the best legacy we can give, and Ayobo-Ipaja will continue to invest in it for the sake of our future generations,” he said.

    The  Deputy Director, Education District 1, Mrs. Rihanat Adeogun, praised the initiative, noting that “spelling bees sharpen vocabulary, strengthen reading culture, and prepare children for future academic challenges”.

    In the primary school category, Praise Paul emerged as the winner, with Adedayo Abigail and Ayodele Victoria clinching the second and third positions respectively. Their performances drew loud applause and admiration from the audience.

    Expressing gratitude after his victory, Paul said: “All I can say is that God helped me. I also want to thank the council chairman for this great opportunity.”

    The secondary school category also featured outstanding performances, with participants demonstrating remarkable confidence and determination. Though the results were highly competitive, organisers described every contestant as a winner for their courage, hard work, and dedication.

    Some of the parents at the event also commended the programme, describing it as a motivation for pupils to take education more seriously.

    The competition concluded with the presentation of prizes, certificates, and group photographs.

    The stage is set for the highly anticipated SpellingBee In Nigeria (SpIN) finals, taking place on February 15, at the U.S. Consul General’s residence in Lagos.

    This landmark event will crown Nigeria’s first-ever national champion, who will go on to represent the country at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the United States.

    The event, which is supported by the American Business Council, U.S. Consulate in Nigeria, Rotary Club VI East, Lucid Education Initiative, and Lagos State, while being locally sponsored by Indomie, with Checkers Custard as a co-sponsor.

    Speaking on the upcoming finals, Eugenia Tachie-Menson, Convener of SpellingBee In Nigeria and an affiliate of the renowned Scripps National Spelling Bee, USA, expressed excitement over the competition’s impact.

    “We are thrilled by the warm reception of SpellingBee In Nigeria among parents, students, and educators. This competition is more than just spelling—it builds confidence, public speaking skills, and deductive reasoning, preparing students for global opportunities.”

    Tachie-Menson said it aims to redefine spelling competitions, moving beyond traditional memorisation techniques to emphasise the development of critical thinking, language comprehension, and communication skills.

    Students urged to apply for Spelling Bee competition

    Chief Executive Officer, Youngsters Cognitive Literary and Advancement Initiative (Yspot-YCLAI) Ms. Temitope Olukomogbon has urged pupils in the country to apply for its virtual spelling bee competition.

    In a statement in Abuja, Olukomogbon said the competition was opened to students between 8-10-year-olds in grades 4-6.

    She said the virtual spelling bee competition would be held on the 3rd of August 2024.

    The 9th edition of the spelling bee is themed “Occupations” and will test the vocabulary of students on words relating to occupations. Participants will be selected based on set criteria.

    Olukomogbon said the Smart Minds Spelling Bee was focused on harnessing the potential of young minds.

    The statement said: “Participants will be drawn from countries across Africa and countries from other continents. We have sustained the virtual edition of the competition because we see the results in fostering a learning culture among youngsters. We aim to inspire young minds to soar. We have witnessed how participants are inspired to start pursuing their dreams.”

    She said that winners will be entitled to certificates of participation, cash prizes for the top three winners (N50,000, N30,000, and N20,000), and scholarships to attend the Code Campus coding summer school.

    Olukomogbon said the coding summer school will be for the top three winners who reside in Abuja.

    She urged interested parents and students to visit the organisation’s website to register for the Spelling Bee Competition via https://yspotinternational.com/register-for-smart-minds-2024/

    Ms. Olukomogbon added that at the recently concluded physical spelling bee competition, 10-year-old Nainat Aliyu-Aynil from Science Primary School Kuje won the contest, while 13-year-old Praise Bala from LEA Primary School Kayarda, Kuje, won the Arts Creativity Competition.

    “They took home medals, competition, and scholarships,” she said.

    The Spelling Bee competitions are organised in partnership with the FCT Universal Basic Education Board, Elpida Development Foundation, Code Campus, and Smiling Faces International, Liberia.

    Pupil of Science Primary School Kuje wins spelling bee competition

    Ten-year-old pupil of Science Primary School, Kuje, a suburb in the Federal Capital Territory, Nainat Aliyu-Aynil, has emerged winner of the spelling bee competition organised by a non-governmental organisation, Yspot.

    Nainat, who is in grade five, beat 16 contestants to emerge winner.

    Also, nine-year-old Peculiar Victor of Model Primary School Kuje was the first runner- up while 15-year-old Hafast Umar of LEA primary school Dafara, was the second runner-up.

    The three pupils were awarded scholarships for the remaining term(s) in primary school; medals and certificates.

    For the art creativity competition, 12-year-old Praise Bala of LEA primary school Kayarda, Kuje, emerged winner.

    Nafiu Ibrahim, 13-year-old in grade six from LEA primary school Kiyi, Kuje emerged first runner-up while David Daniel, nine-year-old in grade six from Science Primary School, Kuje was the second runner – up in the competition.

    Eight contestants participated in the art creativity competition.

    Ronik Comprehensive School (RCS), Ejigbo, Lagos is organising Spelling Bee competition for primary schools in the state.

    In a statement, the Principal, Mrs Victoria Duru, said:  “The Spelling Bee competition holds on Saturday, March 16, 2024 between 10am and 2pm in the school hall.”

    Participating schools include Daisy School, Weenoble School, Ronik Intl Primary School, Don Michael School, Hansberg School, Proper Child School, Grandmates School, Word of Power School, Book Workshop School, Master Ville School.and Top Laurel School.

    Duru said the competition is aimed at uplifting the standard of education and performance among primary school pupils.

    12-year-old wins Spelling Bee contests

    Following months of intense competition, 12-year-old, Nkanu Daniel Victor, has emerged the winner of the 2023 edition of the MTN mPulse Spelling Bee Competition. Daniel, a student of Intimacy with Christ International, Nasarawa, won the competition after spelling eight words correctly in a spell-off against 11-year-old Oluwadamilola Adeolu in the finale, which was held at the MTN Head Office in Ikoyi, Lagos.

    The mPulse Spelling Bee Competition aims to encourage academic growth and self-improvement for students in primary and secondary schools between the ages of nine and 15. It began in August 2023, with participation from over 30,000 students across the country.  The 12-year-old champion will assume leadership of MTN Nigeria for a day and become the face of mPulse for a year.

    Speaking at the event, the Chief Risk and Compliance Officer, MTN Nigeria, Obiageli Ugboma, congratulated the contestants for making it into the finals, whilst reiterating MTN’s commitment to promoting digital literacy in Nigeria.

    Daniel will receive a N2.5 million scholarship grant, laptop, smartphone, and an MTN goody bag in addition to being MTN Nigeria’s CEO for a day. The spelling bee champion’s school will also receive cutting-edge ICT devices, including 10 laptops and 10 Hynet Modems, while her Spelling Coach/teacher will receive a cash prize of N500,000.

    Sharing his excitement at emerging triumphant, Daniel, beaming with joy said: “It feels like a dream to me, I am speechless. It was a tough competition, but I am very happy I came this far and won in the end.”

    Alongside Daniel, the first and second runners-up, Oluwadamilola Adeolu and Ajibola Flourish, both from St Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado Ekiti, and other finalists received prizes totalling over N10 million as well as numerous goody bags. 

    The mPulse Spelling Bee is one of many initiatives organised by MTN to enable students in primary and secondary schools across the country to excel through healthy competitions, engage with our community, and highlight our commitment to education.

  • Firm to hold spelling bee contest

    An education promotion firm, Decipher Solutions, plans to organise Spelling Bee Competitions for students in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS1 – 3) across Nigeria.

    In a statement in Abuja, the firm’s Project Manager, Amina Abdulmalik, said the competition is designed to help students improve their reading culture, spelling proficiencies and increase the range of their vocabulary.

    She said the competition hosted by the firm was formerly known as the FCT Spelling Bee Competition.

    According to her, the contest, which is in its sixth year, will hold in six cities – Lagos, Abuja, Port-Harcourt, Gombe, Enugu and Kano. She added that finalists from each zone would proceed to the grand finale, which will hold in Abuja in July.

    The winners will win a cumulative cash prize of N1 million.

    Students are expected to visit www.solutionsbee.org to register and download the rules and study materials for the competition.

    The statement reads: “The Solutions Spelling Bee is a literacy programme that teaches students not only the accurate pronunciation of words, but their corresponding meaning and proper context of usage in the English Language.

    “It creates a platform for students from diverse backgrounds across the country, including public and private schools to engage and compete fairly in order to emerge as winners of the competition.

    “In order to enrich the learning experience of students, the competition will feature an essay competition as well as a financial literacy session. The competition will also include workshops on essay writing, prose composition, poetry writing, and game design.

    “The winners from the competition will win a cumulative cash prize of one million naira.”
