  • ‘EFFECTIVE SPORTS POLICIES, ADEQUATE FUNDING KEY TO SPORTS’ RENAISSANCE’

‘EFFECTIVE SPORTS POLICIES, ADEQUATE FUNDING KEY TO SPORTS’ RENAISSANCE’

From 15 appearances at the Olympic Games, Nigeria boasts of only three gold, eight silver and 12 bronze medals and the president of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF), George Ashiru has described this as an inconsistent achievement pattern, which could be attributed to issues other than a lack of sporting talent.

In his analysis of Nigerian sports in the last 54 years, the vice president of the Commonwealth Taekwondo Union (CTU) says for Nigeria to fulfill its potential in sports, effective sports policies, massive investment in grassroots development as well as adequate funding are key.

He said: “In 54 years, we have had various agencies for national sports development, as well as several sports policies published, only to be revised or discarded for another. It stems from the fact that the overall sports vision has been hampered by not having specific national goals and preferred timescales to achieve them. When we did have some sort of goals, they were quickly discarded once there were leadership changes at the apex sports body. The policies that have been highlighted have not adequately captured the entire gamut of sports as a tool for national development, even from the cradle, and have focused more on ideals and on administrative methodology at the federal level than specifics for actualising the goals.

He added: “National Sports Trust Fund…it is not existent again. Our National Olympic Committee (NOC) is independent only on paper. Our athletes used to get academic scholarships to study anywhere in the world after winning medals…now that is selective, dependent on the particular event and the particular government in power. In situations like these, coaches, athletes, and administrators get weary and end up under-performing.”

In his submission, Ashiru said: “I would say that the key areas of interest which we should refocus our energy on, is the energising of the High Performance System with professional personnel, independent funding, and a purpose built high performance centre. This organ will continue its quest to find and position elite athletes for podium success. Additionally, massive investment in grassroots development working with the states and local governments to get as many as 1000 youths in each local government sign up for at least one of the various sports unique to their environment weekly.

Continuing he said: “We need specialised funding for training of all state coaches and grassroots coaches in coaching methodology, science of sports and sports psychology. They need to be brought together in a massive wave of coach training to bring them up to international standards of coaching practice, understanding of elite athlete management, as well as high performance structures. The various federations have to again be provided appropriate subventions for administration so that none is lagging behind in providing the right kind of support for their athletes, coaches and other affiliated members.

Gov. Ahmed flags off sports summit

Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed has flagged off the state’s maiden sports summit with a call on governments at all levels to actively support and promote sports in all  ramifications as a way of enhancing national unity.

In a statement signed by the governor’s chief press secretary, Abdulwahab Oba, said the achievements in sports were anchored on long term planning, early identification and growing of talents and private sector participation.

“For me, normative sports development with the endpoint in mind, with a clear idea of where we want to be, in what sports, with what resources and based on clear yardsticks, I hold, therefore, that success in this vital sector lies in adopting a corporate structure in which strategic long-term planning and private sector participation are critical success factors”, he said.

The governor was of the view that for effective and result oriented sports administration, the private sector should play an active role while government should be an enabler of a condusive environment.

Ahmed said it was expected that the  summit, with the theme, “Sporting Nation, Sporting Kwara: Setting the Winning Agenda”, would fashion a framework for sporting excellence by leveraging on identified areas of strength of Kwara State.

He reiterated his administration’s resolve to restore the state’s past glory in sports, especially in some sports. His words: “For us, glory in sports should no longer remain the stuff of fables but an inherent element of our identity as Kwarans just like our identity and our reputation for successful commerce.

Former Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Bolaji Abdullahi, in his keynote address, said the economic values of sports have been under estimated in Nigeria over the year, adding that sports administration should maximise the economic potentials of sports rather than the participatory and entertaining aspects of sports.

Abdullahi, added that Kwara State and Nigeria at large should never be contended with mere participation at sports meets but evolve strategies that would engender attainment of excellence in such participations.

Ugbe said calabar is a home of entertainment adding that the festival will toll the line of London 2012 Olympics.

“It’s going to be a wonderful experience. We are ready for November 23rd. The track is ready, we have also re-grassed the field.

“As you go round the facilities, they are on different levels of completion, some higher than others, but the most important thing is that, they will be ready before 23rd of November, 2014. The indoor hall is under construction and will be delivered to us by the contractor in October.

“We want to assure Nigerians that the festival date will not be postponed because we are ready. Postponement happened in Rivers and Lagos states because of unforeseen circumstances, even at the global stage, we had issues in the World Cup in Brazil, the facilities were not ready untill the last time, but that did not stop the World Cup from holding.

“The facilities, the  structural design of the indoor sports hall and the finishing will be the last to be delivered to us in October. What is left now, is for the pillars to go up and the roofing. We have fixed November 23rd and we stand by it .

“All the facilities needed for the festival are being worked on right now, tennis is going to take place at the Calabar Sports Club, if you go there today, work has gone to seventy percent, all contractors have their time limits to deliver.

” “Why should states complain, look at the coastal regions, it spread from here in Calabar to Lagos, many states along it, you want to tell me canoeing, for goodness sake, we are taking part in canoeing in All Africa games and what did our festival suppose to do? Our festival suppose to produce the athletes that will represent this country in All Africa games, and the Olympics, in our festival, we did not take part in the sport, where are we going to get the athletes that will represents us internationally. Our festival is an opportunity for us to fish out  the athletes. Do you know the number of medals that we are losing from all those sports by not taking them seriously, those simple sports we participate in are not our key areas .

    • Says NFF yet to meet conditions given

Former Chairman of Nembe City, Rumson Victor Baribote, has confirmed that he had discussions with the Sports Minister, Tamuno Danagogo but stated his wife, Ruth, who took the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to court has given the Football House some conditions to be met before a truce could be possible.

The sack of the Aminu Maigari led NFF board resulted into the suspension of Nigeria from international competition and further sanctions are imminent if the board is not reinstated before next FIFA hammer.

In a chat with SportingLife on telephone, Baribote confirmed the development but stressed that there was nothing special in his discussion with the Sports Minister since it is only his wife that can better speak on the court case and not him. He noted that the NFF should be asked how far they have gone about the conditions given before the case could be withdrawn.

“Yes, I had discussion with the Sports Minister and there was nothing special with that. My wife stated  conditions that should be fulfilled before anything can happen. You may ask the NFF how far they have gone regarding the conditions stipulated,” Baribote told SportingLife.

The owner of Nembe City, Ruth Baribote, took the NFF to court and this led to the sack of Aminu Maigari and his executive board members. FIFA did not hesitate to slam a suspension on Nigeria and also gave July 17 as an ultimatum to reinstate the sacked NFF board or risks international indefinite ban.
