  • Two Nigerians stabbed to death in South Africa

    The death toll of Nigerians killed in South Africa has continued to rise with another two being the latest victims in ongoing xenophobic attacks on foreigners in that country.

    The latest victims were stabbed to death during xenophobic attacks in Johannesburg and Cape Town on April 5 and April 6, 2019, respectively.

    The Assistant Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Union in South Africa (NUSA), Mr Odefa Ikele, confirmed the killings in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) from Johannesburg on Monday.

    ”The Nigerian community lost two citizens to gruesome murders over the weekend.

    ”Mr Bonny Iwuoha, 48, from Ihitte/Uboma in Imo state, was stabbed to death at about 11:45 p.m. on April 6, 2019 in Johannesburg South.

    ”We gathered that his assailants followed him from 152 Hay Street Turffontein, and thereafter, stabbed and killed him in front of his gate at Turf Road, Turffontein.

    ”The killing was witnessed by Mr Izochukwu Nwokocha, also known as, Nwa Father,” he said.

    Ikele said the killing had been reported and a case of murder opened at Booysens Police Station in Johannesburg South.

    He said that another Nigerian, Goziem Akpenyi, also lost his life in similar circumstance on April 5, 2019.

    ”Akpenyi was allegedly stabbed to death by three unknown coloured South African men after an argument with the deceased.

    ”The incident took place at in Cape Town at about 1 p.m. on Friday, April 5, 2019.

    ”These latest killings add to four other Nigerians who were shot dead in March. Three of the victims were murdered in Sunnyside, Pretoria and one in Balfour Park, Johannesburg,” he said.

    Ikele said that NUSA was concerned over the incessant killings of Nigerians and worried that the perpetrators had not been brought to book.

    According to him, the arrest and prosecution of the culprits by the South African Police would put to a stop the daily killings of Nigerians.

    ”We call on the Nigerian Government to impress on their South African counterpart that the killings have to be investigated and the culprits prosecuted,” he appealed.

  • Petrol station manager allegedly stabbed to death over missing N40,000

    A manager of a petrol station in Okpuno Nnewichi, Nnewi, in Nnewi North Local Government of Anambra State, was yesterday allegedly killed by his employer over disappearance of N40,000.

    The deceased, whose identity could not be ascertained last night, was said to be a member of Aghazu family in the community.

    The Nation gathered that the suspect had asked the deceased to provide the money he claimed was missing from the company’s purse.

    A family member of the deceased, who preferred anonymity, said:

    “The manager begged his boss to bear with him. He even asked him to deduct the money from his November salary, but he refused and insisted that the money must be provided instantly.

    “The suspect, in a desperate attempt to recover the money, stabbed the deceased several times with a screwdriver and he collapsed.”

    The source said the deceased was taken to Rose of Sharon Specialist Hospital, Nnewi, where he was confirmed dead.

    “The employer was nowhere to be found. As soon as he learnt that his manager had died, he bolted,” the source added.

    The Nation learnt that the body was later taken to an undisclosed destination by the police in Nnewi.

    Spokesman Haruna Mohammed confirmed the incident.

    He said: “The headquarters is yet to get full details of the incident.”

  • Youth stabbed to death over leadership tussle

    A middle-aged man, Godfrey Onagba, was at the weekend stabbed to death during a quarrel with a rival group over who would emerge as the president-general of the community.

    The Nation learnt that the victim, an Ewu indigene in Ughelli South Local Government of Delta State, died at the Ughelli Central Hospital, Ughelli, where he was taken to after he was attacked by his assailants.

    Sources said the deceased, a loyalist to the embattled community President General, Ogaga Etaiga, was attacked on the eve of the community’s annual conference, which would herald the beginning of a new executive.

    Trouble started when the embattled youth leader, whose tenure was said to have elapsed, staged a comeback for another term, a move that did not go down well with others in the community.

    A police source told The Nation that the victim died from the injuries he sustained, as he was stabbed in the heart and head.

  • Man ‘stabbed to death with broken bottle’

    Yesterday remanded in prison on the orders of an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Akinsanya, 23, is facing a charge of murder.

    Prosecuting Inspector Julius Babatope, told the court that the offence was committed on March 25 at Oto Transformer, off Oke Ira-Nla in Ajah on Lagos-Epe Expressway.

    Suddenly in the heat of an argument, the accused brought out a bottle of Chelsea dry gin and stabbed the deceased on his leg and bled to death, he said.

    “The accused was later caught in Ijebu-Ode in Ogun where he absconded to.”

    Magistrate A.O. Adegite directed that the accused should remain in prison pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    She adjourned the case till June 4.

  • Council worker stabbed to death

    Pandemonium broke out yesterday at the Agege Local Government secretariat after a man identified as Samuel Koro-toe was stabbed to death.

    Eyewitnesses claimed that Koro-toe was killed by a man suspected of being an operative of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

    It was learnt that the deceased was a staff of Alimosho Local Government.

    The NDLEA has an office at the council secretariat.

    The late Koro-toe was attending the 40th anniversary of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) held at the secretariat, when the incident happened.

    Sources told The Nation that the NDLEA operatives seemed to be drunk and shot sporadically into the air, scaring guests at the event.

    This angered the NULGE leadership which reprimanded them.

    But the NULGE executive’s intervention infuriated the NDLEA operatives and, following a heated exchange, Koro-toe was stabbed.

    A source said: ‘’The reaction of NULGE executives infuriated the NDLEA officers and they went overboard shooting sporadically and stabbing Koro-toe with a machete. The latter was pronounced dead on the scene while the perpetrator fled, but his colleagues were arrested by the police whose arrival averted a reprisal attack.’’

    The spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, Mr Chike Oti could not be reached at press time. He neither not answered his telephone nor responded to a text message sent to his mobile number.

     

  • Expectant mother stabbed to death

    An expectant mother, who was resting in front of her home at Isiokpo in Ikwerre Local Government of Rivers State, was on Wednesday stabbed to death by gunmen.

    The Nation learnt the woman was killed because she prevented gunmen from kidnapping her husband.

    The lawmaker representing Ikwerre/Emohua Federal Constituency of Rivers State, Mr. Chidi Frank Wihioka, has urged security agencies to probe killings in communities in Ikwerre Local Government.

    He advised Governor Nyesom Wike to be proactive in securing life and property, saying no government could achieve progress in an atmosphere of insecurity.

    There have been killings at Igwuruta, Apani, Omerelu, Ubima and Isiokpo, all in Ikwerre Local Government.

    Addressing his constituents on the need to make themselves available for the voter registration ahead of 2019 elections, the legislator said killings in the area must stop.

    Wihioka, who was angry by reports of killings, urged the police to arrest perpetrators of crimes.

    He described the killings in the communities as evil, stressing that youths must desist from tarnishing the image of the local government.

    Wihioka said: “I’m not happy about the killings in our communities. This is happening after claims by youths that they have accepted the amnesty offered by the government. If truly they have accepted amnesty, why killings again?

    “The killing in this part of the state is getting out of hand. I enjoin the police to tighten security. Culprits should be arrested and prosecuted.

    “Governor Wike, the chief security officer, should address this problem. He must be proactive in issues concerning security of life and property.”

    Fadipe was stabbed to death, says witness

    An Ikeja High Court heard yesterday the late human rights activist, Kunle Fadipe, was stabbed to death and not shot by his suspected killer.

    Inspector James Adetoye, who was testify in the trial of Oluwaseun Oladapo for Fadipe’s death, said there were no bullet wounds on his body but several wounds caused by knife stabs.

    With Adetoye’s testimony, the prosecution close its case, paving the way for Oladapo to open his defence today before Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye.

    Led in evidence by the prosecutor, Jide Martins, a lawyer from the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DSP), Adetoye said the photographs tendered in the case were taken at the crime scene.

    His team, he said, was involved in the investigation into Fadipe’s death, adding that the photographs were part of the evidence against the defendant.

    Defendant’s counsel Walter Oduagbaka urged the court not to admit the photographs as exhibit because they were not taken by members of the police forensic team.

    Justice Ipaye over-ruled him and admitted the photographs as exhibit 14.

    Under cross-examination by Oduagbaka, Adetoye said the defendant was not shot by the police. He said Oladapo was  shot in the leg by security guards when he was trying to overpower them at the crime scene on Harmony Close in Harmony Estate, Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government.

    The witness said that the defendant’s right was read to him before  his statement was taken, adding that he thumb printed the statement after it was written and read to him in Yoruba.

    Adetoye said Oladapo was not in pain when he gave his statement, adding: “The defendant was taken to our clinic for treatment and he was okay before the statement was taken from him.”

    Justice Ipaye adjourned the matter till today for Oladapo to open his defence.

  • Primary school pupil stabbed to death in Kano

    A schoolgirl of Fagge Special Primary School in Kano, whose name could not be ascertained, was yesterday stabbed to death by unidentified assailants.

    The incident was said to have occurred at 1pm at the school’s pit toilet.

    It was learnt that the assailants scaled the fence and abducted a male and a female pupils when classes were in progress.

    The two pupils were reportedly dumped inside a pit toilet.

    The schoolgirl was stabbed on the head, which caused her death.

    It was also learnt that the male pupil survived the attack.

    When our reporter visited the school, the pit toilet, where the pupils were attacked, was locked.

    A security man on the school premises, Mallam Ibrahim Dan Sariki, told our reporter that at 1pm yesterday, some hoodlums scaled the school fence and attacked two pupils.

    He said the hoodlums dragged the pupils into the toilet and stabbed them repeatedly on the head.

    Dan Sariki said the schoolgirl died, following thr injured she sustained on the head while the boy survived.

    Police spokesman Musa Magaji Majiya, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), confirmed the incident.

    He said immediately the police were alerted by the Assistant Headmaster, they by drafted the crack squad to the scene.

    On arrival, Majiya said the police met the victims in a pool of blood.

    According to him, the police took photographs of the toilet, where their blood was splashed and rushed the pupils to a hospital, where the girl was confirmed dead.

    Majiya said the male pupil was responding well to treatment.

    The spokesman said investigation into the incident had begun, adding that the motive behind the attack had not been established.
