  • Fed Govt urges UK to probe stabbing of Nigerian teenager

    The Federal Government has condemned the stabbing to death of another Nigerian teenager in London, United Kingdom (UK).

    Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, senior special assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, said the killing of Orebiyi and other extra-judicial killing of Nigerias in UK was worrisome.

    The Presidential aide called for a full investigation of the incident and urged the UK government to ensure that justice prevails.

    In a statement by her Special Assistant on Media, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa said the killing of 17-year-old Fola Orebiyi was unacceptable to the government and people of Nigeria.

    Condoling the family of the deceased, she prayed unto God to give the bereaved family the fortitude to bear the painful loss.

    She said while Nigeria would not condone crime and criminal tendencies, it takes exception to the harassment, killing and execution of its nationals abroad.

    Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa urged Nigerians to support the President Muhammadu Buhari administration in making Nigeria a better place.

    Orebiyi was reportedly stabbed to death in a street clash on Sunday, in Notting Hill, London, by a gang of youths.

    He was reportedly involved in a fight on a nearby estate with the gang, which chased him into the busy road, where he was stabbed in the neck in front of shocked passersby and tourists.

    The boy collapsed and bled to death and efforts by the Police and paramedics to resuscitate him failed.

    The deceased’s neighbour, Osman Sahal, told the police: “He was a nice boy and considerate; none of us can understand how this could have happened.

    “As far as I knew, he was never in trouble. I suppose we must now wait for the police to investigate.”

    Orebiyi, who completed his General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) at Holland Park in London, was studying for his A’ Levels at the Chelsea Academy.

    After the incident, a yet-to-be identified 15-year-old boy was arrested by the London police.

    An anonymous teenager was quoted to have told the police: “I know what happened; he was protecting a friend over a silly beef, which turned violent.”

  • Drunk admits stabbing nine customers with broken bottle

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos yesterday reserved May 18 for judgment in a case involving a drunk, Sunday Michael, who confessed to stabbing nine customers with a broken bottle in an hotel.

    Magistrate A.A Adesanya remanded Michael, 24, in Kirikiri Prison after he pleaded guilty.

    Michael, a vulcaniser on 53, Oshodi Road in Mafoluku, Oshodi, Lagos, was arraigned on a two-count charge of breach of peace and assault.

    Prosecuting Inspector George Nwosu said the accused committed the offence on April 3 at Marina Hotel in Alagbado, a Lagos suburb.

    He said the accused assaulted one Wasiu Adenekan by beating and stabbing him with a broken bottle.

    “The accused stabbed the victim all over his body with a broken bottle,” he said.

    Nwosu said the accused also caused a breach of the peace by chasing away the hotel’s customers with a broken bottle.

    “There was a night-show at the hotel and, suddenly, the accused who was drunk started chasing viewers with a broken bottle.

    “Everybody started running helter-skelter for their lives, but he succeeded in stabbing eight customers with a broken bottle.

    “The accused also pursued the complainant; the complainant fell and the accused caught up with him and stabbed him severally all over his body.

    “Blood gushed out from the complainant’s body and he fainted, he is still lying critically at a general hospital,” he said.

    The prosecutor said the accused also damaged 28 plastic chairs and tables and five crates of empty bottles, all valued at N47,400.

  • Man flees after ‘stabbing’ twin brothers

    A man identified as Alex Onuora has fled his home after allegedly stabbing twin brothers, Elvis and Newis Mekwa, with broken bottles, killing one of them in the process.

    The incident occurred on Tuesday at Council Bus Stop, Liasu Road, Ikotun, near a hotel owned by a musician, Segun Adewale’s wife.

    It was gathered that the suspect harassed the victims’ younger sister after she turned down his love advances.

    Onuora was said to have attempted to seduce the young girl while they were have drinks at the hotel, an offer she rejected.

    Angered by her refusal, he allegedly beat her up, prompting the girl to go home and report to her brothers.

    The twins, it was learnt, confronted the suspect, leading to an altercation before Onuora alongside his friend, Alia, allegedly took bottles from the hotel and stabbed the teenagers.

    He stabbed Elvis in the neck and his brother was stabbed in his hand and body.

    It was learnt that Elvis bled severely and died before getting to the hospital. Newis is still being treated at the hospital.

    The suspect, who resides at 51, Olalekan Adekoye Street, the same street with the victims, has since fled.

    At the victims’ residence, sympathisers expressed shock over the disaster, but refused to comment.

    It was gathered that policemen from Ikotun Station arrested the hotel manager, Chibueze Anumudu and a woman identified as Blessing.

    Confirming the incident, police spokesperson Dolapo Badmos said Onuora and Alia were at large.

    She said: “One Franklin Obi Philips reported at Ikotun Police Station that his younger sister was beaten up by Alex Onuora. He said when his brothers, Elvis and Newis, 19, went to find out why their sister was assaulted, the suspect and his friend attacked them with broken bottles. Elvis died on his way to the hospital but Newis has been treated and discharged from the hospital.”

  • Man remanded for ‘stabbing’ mum to death

    An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos, on Friday, ordered a 30-year old man, Ibrahim Oniyide, to be remanded in prison for allegedly stabbing his mother to death.

    Chief Magistrate B.O Ope-Agbe ordered that the accused be remanded in Ikoyi Prisons, pending the release of legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

    Oniyide is facing a-count charge of murder.

    His plea was not taken.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Jimah Iseghede told the court that the offence was committed on February 5 at about noon on 3, Olubunmi Christopher Street, Abule-Egba, Lagos.

    He alleged that the accused stabbed his mother, Taiwo Oniyide, 50, to death with a kitchen knife.

    The prosecutor said the accused had a disagreement with his mother and stabbed her to death in annoyance.

    Iseghede said the offence contravened Sections 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The case has been adjourned to March 8, pending legal advice from the DPP.

    Police arrest son for ‘stabbing’ mum to death

    A son has allegedly stabbed his mother to death in her home at Abule Egba, Lagos.

    Residents of 3, Bunmi Christopher Close off Arowolo Street, Abule Egba, said they could not save the woman because the boy locked her in the room before the alleged dastardly act.

    Police spokesperson Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said the boy, a barber whose name was given as Ibrahim, was arrested last Friday.

    Ibrahim had reportedly run away after his mother Mrs Oluyide was confirmed dead.

    The Nation learnt that Ibrahim, who lives in Ikeja, was on a visit to his mother that fateful day.

    A resident said they were surprised by the visit because he hardly comes to see mama as the woman was fondly called.

    “When he entered the room he increased the volume of the radio and television, so we could not hear what was going on. After some minutes of talking, he picked a club and hit mama with it severally; when he noticed that mama didn’t die, he stabbed her with a knife. He came out and yelled Oti ku Oti Ku, then I looked at him, he was gory, I immediately raised the alarm, before we could lay hands on him, he fled.

    “We could not sleep since this incident happened, I don’t know what led him to do it, he probably could have gone somewhere and he was told his mother was a witch, but even at that it is not reason enough to take the life of the woman who brought you into this world. I pray the police catch him and let him pay for his sins,” he said.

    Another resident said he was in the bathroom when he heard the old woman shout for help that her son wanted to kill her.

    He said he rushed out to find her door locked from inside, adding that he knocked and asked Ibrahim to open the door but the lad refused.

    “As I peeped through the window to see what was going on in the room, I saw blood stains on Ibrahim’s hand. When he opened the door, he ran through the backyard and escaped. Other tenants who went inside the room saw the lifeless body of the woman. He had stabbed her on the neck severally,” he said.

    An elder in the neighbourhood said: “This is Nigeria, I am sure with the influence of mama’s son, he will get away, even if the case is recorded or taken to court, he will still get away. The corruption level will not allow justice to take its course. So even if he his apprehended, the outcome is predictable”.

    It was learnt that the other children have taken some of their mother’s properties from the house.

    The suspect, SP Badmos said, had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) at Panti, Yaba, Lagos Mainland.

  • Jilted woman docked for stabbing lover

    A 20- year- old trader, Rashidat Iyabo, is now facing trial for allegedly stabbing one Dauda Sunday for jilting her.

    Also arraigned with Rashidat before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court was, Jumoke Olawe, 34.

    The prosecution alleged that the accused persons   conspired to  assault Dauda at Sawmill area, Ebute Metta, and stabbed in his head and body on August 19,2015 .

    Dauda was said to have broken up with Rashidat after a prolonged relationship.

    The duo pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The  police prosecutor , Ajayi Emmanuel said the offence  contravened Sections 409 and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State ,2011.

    The defence counsel, F.S Oladele prayed the court to grant the defendants bail in the most liberal terms.

    The presiding magistrate, Fowowe Eruasiafe, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N50,000 and two sureties in the like sum .

    The case was adjourned till October 9 for trial.

  • Two held for ‘stabbing’ man at viewing centre

    Two men, who allegedly stabbed another man at a football viewing centre, yesterday, appeared before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court in Lagos.

    The accused – Akinbo Toyin, 29, a printer, and Adekunle Olaniyan, 29, a barber are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and assault.

    Prosecuting Officer Donjor Perezi said the offence were committed on August 8 at a football viewing centre at Amikanle, Alagbado, Lagos.

    According to Perezi, a fight ensued at the veiwing centre over a petty argument and the accused stabbed one Abayomi Akapo, on the neck, head and jaw, causing him a very deep injury.

    “The victim was rescued by people at the centre, who quickly rushed him to the hospital, else he would have died,’’ he said.

    The offence, according to the prosecutor, contravened Sections 171 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate O.A. Akinde admitted the accused to N100, 000 bail each, with two sureties in the like sum, and adjourned the case till September 28.

  • Horticulturist charged for stabbing man with broken bottle

    For allegedly stabbing a man with a broken bottle, a 29-year-old horticulturist, Ola Obafunso, was on Monday charged before an Abule-Egba, Lagos.

    The accused, who lives at Adijat Lawal Street, Onikanga in Ayobo, a Lagos suburb, is facing a charge of assault occasioning harm.

    The prosecution said the offence was committed on June 14 at a beer parlour at Landlord Street, Ayobo.

    Insp. Racheal Williams told the court that an argument ensued between the accused and the complainant, Richard Martins, over a mobile phone.

    “Out of anger, the accused hit the complainant with a bottle on his neck and he started bleeding.

    “If not for the intervention of the people there who rushed him to the hospital, he would have bled to death,” she said.

    The offence, according to her, contravenes Section 171.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section prescribes three-year for assault occasioning harm.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Ruling on the bail application of the accused, the Magistrate, Mrs Adenike Shonubi, granted him bail in the sum of N10, 000 with a surety in like sum.

    She adjourned the case till September 14.

     

  • Driver accused of stabbing neighbour

    A 39-year-old driver, Azeez Kolawole, was yesterday arraigned before an Apapa Senior Magistrate’s Court in Lagos, for allegedly stabbing his neighbour on the neck with a broken bottle.

    Kolawole, who lives on Ibadan Street, Benna Bus Stop in Ajegunle, Lagos, denied committing the offence.

    Prosecuting Police Corporal John Iberedem, said the accused assaulted Jamiu Isiaka by stabbing him on May 15 at their residence.

    “The complainant said he was in his room when he heard Kolawole beating his wife.

    “Isiaka left his room to settle the fight between the couple when the accused stabbed him with a broken bottle on the neck,” he said.

    The prosecutor said Kolawole contravened Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    Senior Magistrate G.L. Otepo granted the accused N50,000 bail with one surety in the like sum, and adjourned the case till July 7.

  • Man, 20 arraigned for stabbing friend

    A 20-year-old-man, Sunday  Afolabi, has been arraigned at a Lagos Chief Magistrate Court for allegedly stabbing his friend, Badmus Taiwo.

    Afolabi is facing a two -count charge bordering on conspiracy and felony before Chief Magistrate Mrs. A.O. Komolafe.

    The prosecutor, Eranus Ibekwe Nnamonu, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, (ASP),   alleged that the defendant and one other said to be at large, unlawfully inflicted wound on Badmus Taiwo by stabbing him on his chest with a broken knife which caused him harm.

    The prosecutor said the offence was contrary to and punishable under Section  244 (a)  of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.

    Nnamonu also alleged that the defendant and one other at large, came together to commit conspiracy and felony and thereby committed an offence contrary to  Section 409 and punishable under Section 404 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.

    When the charges were read, the defendant pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Komolafe consequently granted him bail in the sum of N30,000 with two sureties in like sum.
