  • ‘We’re focused on securing nation, stabilising economy’

    President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday in Abuja said his administration would work harder to improve on the gains recorded in securing the country from the onslaughts of terrorists and criminals and ensuring that Nigerians enjoy a better livelihood by stabilising the economy.

    The President, who received Tijjaniyya Shura Council at the Presidential Villa, said the government continues to review its interventions and projections on security and the economy, with the hope of bringing peace and improved economy to all.

    The President, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, also commended religious bodies and Nigerians for the encouragement shown to the administration through prayers.

    According to him, a peaceful and prosperous country is realisable with collective vision and shared effort.

    “I am grateful for the prayers and words of encouragement,’’ he said,

    “Nigeria’s unity is strong and must be sustained. It is instructive to note that Nigeria preceded all of us in age, and we must do our best to keep the country together.’’

    President is stabilising factor in Nigeria, says Peterside

    NIGERIAN Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Director-General Dr. Dakuku Peterside has described President Muhammadu Buhari as a stabilising factor in Nigeria.

    He noted that Buhari and the Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, who is also the former Rivers State Governor, are good leaders, who are determined to move Nigeria forward.

    Peterside, the Rivers State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the 2015 election, spoke yesterday in his home at the old Government Reservation Area (GRA), Port Harcourt, while receiving at his home thousands of Muslims from across Nigeria, but resident in the state, as part of the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.

    The Muslims were led by Alhaji Ali Kwande, who said they were proud of the detribalising virtues of Peterside, stressing that the visit was not to talk or play politics, but to share the joy of the Sallah with the NIMASA chief and members of his family.

    Kwande added that they were also at Peterside home to appreciate the President and Amaechi for repositioning the country and enabling Nigerians benefit from the dividends of democracy.

    Peterside said: “There is no ethnicity and no tribalism. Barka da Sallah. When you notified me that you wanted to pay me a Sallah visit, I did not think twice. I immediately replied: ‘Yes sir, I am available,’ and I notified the overall leader of our great party (APC), the Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, who described you as his brothers and sisters.”

    Obaseki hails retiring CJ for stabilising judiciary

    Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has hailed outgoing Chief Judge, Justice Cromwell Idahosa, for stabilising the judiciary.

    He spoke when he hosted the CJ to a dinner at the Government Banquet Hall.

    Obaseki, extolling the leadership qualities of Idahosa, thanked God for protecting him.

    He said: “Tonight I thank you for all you have done in the judiciary.

    “I thank you for recommending Justice Esohe Ikponwen, the chief judge designate.”

    The governor said it was gratifying to know that Justice Idahosa had a meritorious service, having built a strong judiciary with the support of ex-Governor Adams Oshiomhole and the transited Oba Erediauwa.

    Idahosa praised the governor for hosting him and supporting the judiciary.

    He urged people to cooperate with Obaseki in the execution of developmental programmes.

    Dignitaries at the event included Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu,  Speaker of the House of Assembly  Justin Okonoboh, Justice Ikponwen and members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria.

  • Aliyu, a stabilising factor in Nigerian politics, says Okorocha

    Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, yesterday said that the Chairman of Northern Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Niger State governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, is a stablising factor in the politics of Nigeria.

    X-raying the leadership qualities of Aliyu at the reception of the wedding ceremony of his two daughters-Dr. Jamila and Dr. Farida in Minna, Okorocha concluded that ‘’he (Aliyu) is a man that can stabilise Nigeria.”

    ‘’We are all here because of one man, Governor Aliyu. He is a man who can stabilise Nigeria and who is always working for the unity and progress of this country,’’ Okorocha told the large gathering at the reception chaired by the Vice- President, Architect Namadi Sambo.

    The Imo State helmsman added that the large presence of governors and members of the National Assembly and their families is a testimony to the type of person the governor is.

    Okorocha challenged all Nigerians to work and ensure the unity of the country so that ‘’we can build a country that we will all be proud of.”

    Speaking in the same vein, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, in a brief remark also described Aliyu as ‘’a man of the people.”

    ‘’Like Governor Okorocha said, the large attendance of people at this ceremony is a clear testimony of the kind of person Governor Aliyu is. He is a pillar in the society. This explains why so many people from different walks of life are under this roof for the reception of his daughters’ wedding,’’ Tambuwal cstated.

    Vice-President Sambo, who was the father of the day, also joined others in praying to God to reward the families with good children.

    Earlier, the Chief Imam of Minna, Alhaji Abu Fari, joined by other Islamic clerics conducted the fathia after receiving the N100,000 naira dowry for each of the two brides from the grooms’ families.

    Prominent Nigerians from all walks of life, among them the Senate President, David Mark, former military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, state governors, legislators from national and states assemblies, politicians and captains of industry graced the wedding ceremony.
