  • Fayemi presents staff of office to monarch

    Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi has presented the instrument of appointment and staff of office to the new Alaaye of Oke Ayedun Ekiti, Oba Olufemi Aribisala, with a call on the traditional institution to partner his administration in ensuring better standard of living for the citizenry.

    Performing the official presentation of staff of office to the new monarch at Oke Ayedun in Ikole Local Government Area, Fayemi said his present administration was passionate at carrying out meaningful programmes that would have direct impact on the people.

    The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi, advised the new royal father to work harmoniously with his people to accelerate the rate of development of the Oke-Ayedun community,

    A statement yesterday signed by the Special Assistant (Media) to the Deputy Governor, Odunayo Ogunmola, said the process of selecting a new Alaaye was consequent upon the demise of the last occupant of the throne, Oba Jacob Fatunase Ala, on March 22, 2018.

    The governor explained that the selection and enthronement of Oba Aribisala was in accordance with paragraph 1, Section 8 of the Chiefs Edict of 1984, as amended in 1991, which was further amended as Ekiti State Chiefs Law in 2010.

    Noting that the selection of Oba Aribisala was devoid of political coloration and influence, Fayemi reminded the new king that his position demands considerable diligence, sacrifice, initiatives and perseverance.

    The governor appealed to the people of the community to demonstrate the spirit of oneness and sincerity of purpose by supporting and cooperating with their monarch.

    Fayemi urged the people of the community to contribute their quota to the socioe-conomic development of the community, admitting that government cannot sufficiently satisfy all the needs and aspirations of the people due to limited available resources.

    The new Alaaye of Oke Ayedun Ekiti promised to work with all his strength and intellect to surpass the achievements of his predecessors.

    Oba Aribisala called on those aggrieved to sheathe their swords and join hands with him to move the community forward in the path of peace, progress and prosperity.

  • New Olota to get staff of office tomorrow

    Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun will tomorrow present the staff of office and instrument of appointment to the new Olota of Ota, Oba Adeyemi Abdulkabir Obalanlege.

    A statement yesterday in Abeokuta, the state capital, by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Jide Ojuko, said Amosun had approved the appointment of Oba Obalanlege in accordance with Section 2 of the Chiefs Law of Ogun State, 2006.

    This followed the demise of Oba Moshood Alani Osanyintola Oyede of the Ikowogbe Ruling House, who joined his ancestors in May, 2016.

    Oba Obalanlege, a Professor, was born on August 28, 1966, to the Ijemo-Isolosi Ruling House and was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication at Crescent University in Abeokuta.

    He holds a Ph.D in Communication Studies from the University of Antewerp, Belgium; a Master of Arts in Mass Communication from the University of Leicester, England; a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in Journalism from Independent Colleges and Higher National Diploma from Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta.

    He attended Ansar-Ud-Deen College, Isolo, Lagos State and Iganmode Grammar School in Ota, Ogun State.

    The Olota is a member of Rotary Club, a fellow of Higher Education Academy (HEA) in the United Kingdom (UK); a member of Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) of London; a member of Public Relations Institute of Ireland (PRII) in Dublin and a member of International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR).

    Ondo community’s monarch gets staff of office

    The Ondo State government yesterday presented a staff of office to the Alapaka I of Kiribo Kingdom in Ese-Odo Local Government Area, Oba Ajayi Oduyi.

    The ceremony was conducted at the Methodist Primary School’s playing field at Kiribo.

    The stool of Niyon of Kiribo became vacant on February 13, 2013, when Oba Fredrick Omosegbon of the Idumudoko Ruling House joined his ancestors.

    The process of filling the vacant stool began in July, following an approval by the state government.

    Handing over the staff of office and instrument of appointment to the new monarch, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu rejoiced with the new monarch on his ascension to the throne.

    The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Ifedayo Abegunde, wished the monarch wisdom and understanding, good health and many years of peaceful reign over his subjects.

    According to him, the occasion marked the beginning of a new dawn in the ancient town.

    Akeredolu praised the stakeholders for the peaceful selection of the new Alakpata.

    The governor advised the Oduyi not to see the new position as having no challenges but to see it as one that requires high responsibilities in dealing with his subjects and carrying out his day-to-day activities.

    He advised the monarch to imbibe the spirit of fairness and restraint in exercising the power conferred on him.

    Akeredolu urged Kiribo indigenes at home and in the Diaspora to support Oduyi to achieve successes in his reign.

    Deputy Governor Agboola Ajayi, an indigene of the community, urged the residents to cooperate with the new monarch for a successful reign.

    The Caretaker Chairman of Ese-Odo Local Government Area, Bekewei Olowu, said the epoch-making event showed that the oba was well chosen.

    For several hours penultimate Saturday, friends and well-wishers from far and near joined the people of Ota Awori in Atan/Iju/Ilogbo Local Council Development Area of Ogun State to celebrate the coronation and presentation of staff of office to Oba Oluwasegun Joel Fasina as Onikooko of Kooko Ebiye land. Governor Ibikunle Amosun did the presentation to the monarch.

    It was gun salute galore. Gbedu and Bata talking drums and Yoruba cultural dancers were present to make the event a colourful one.

    The presence of the police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Man “O” War, among other security agencies, mounted in strategic places around the community, especially the king’s palace ensured hitch-free event.

    The monarch succeeded the late Oba Semion Olatunji Fashina, who died on October 28, 2008.

    Born on January 5, 1953 to the ruling family, Oba Fasina retired as a Police Area Commander of Ilaro Command in 2011, after serving in various capacities for 35 years.

    Governor Amosun, represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Olajide Ojuko, urged the monarch to maintain loyalty, peace, orderliness and ensure that the welfare and traditional ethos of the citizens were maintained.

    He urged other contestants to the throne who lost out to sheathe their swords and embrace peace, spirit of sportsmanship and co-operate with the king in all his projects to move the town forward.

    He appealed to the monarch to rule without rivalry and involve his opponents in bringing peace, harmony, development and progress to the town and state.

    Oba Fashina thanked Amosun for the justice, equity and fairness exhibited during his selection. He pledged to serve his people and rebuild Kooko Ebiye land.

    He sought the support of his people both at home and in the Diaspora, adding that only the best advice and ideas would promote peace, oneness and the betterment of the land.

    The monarch said his determination was to unite and promote peace, respect for constituted authority and the traditional institution. He announced that he would have zero-tolerance for thuggery, disrespect for law and order and violence in the town.

    He urged the Governor to mull fixing the road leading to the community from Atan, Coker/Ibogun, among others, pencilled for asphalting for the rapid development and socio-economic enhancement of the state.

    The monarch pledged his co-operation to other monarchs and chiefs to boost development that would make Awori land stronger and more united.

    He warned the citizens against land grabbers, even as he condemned the attitude of omo onile who disturb people working in their sites. He warned those parading themselves as chiefs, using illegal plate numbers, inscribed with different titles to desist from such act, saying it would no longer be accepted in the town.

    He appealed to the police, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other law enforcement agent to ensure that the directive was carried out.

    Present at the occasion were political leaders, captains of industry, chiefs, monarchs, and traditional groups, among others.

    Gaidam presents staff of office to Emir of Ngelzarma

    Yobe State Governor Ibrahim Gaidam over the weekend presented staff of office to newly appointed Emir of Ngelzarma, Alh. Muhammadu Zanna Mai Yeri Ibn Isa III.

    The colorful occasion which took place at the expansive arena of the Palace at Ngelzarma about 30 km south of Damaturu, the state capital had in attendance all the Emirs in the state and the Shehu of Borno, Alh. Dr. Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Al-Almin El-Kanami.,

    Presenting the Staff of Office, the Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam said he has no doubt that the new Emir will succeed due to his  wealth of  experience, proven integrity, honesty, patience and other outstanding qualities.

    He charged the new Emir to be “prepared shoulder the heavy responsibilities associated with your office. Your role as the Emir of Ngelzarma demands that you serve your people honestly, diligently and uphold the dignity and honor of all people in your domain irrespective of their socio –economic, religion and tribal differences. We also expect you to provide able leadership to the people,” Gaidam charged.

    It would be recalled that the late emir Alhaji Mahammadu Mai Yeri Ibn Isa II died  in a ghastly car crash in Gerei in Adamawa State in March 2014 at the age of  49.

    Update: New Oba of Benin unveils name

    The new Oba of Benin has unveiled his name as Oba Ewaure II.

    The Oba disclosed this in the well-attended event shortly after he was presented with the Staff of Office by Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

     

    Oshiomhole in his speech praised the late Oba Erediauwa for supporting his administration for the development of the state.

     

    He said his successor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, would surpass any relationship he cultivated with the traditional institutions in the state.

  • Jubilation as new Oluwo gets staff of office

    The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdul-Rasheed Adewale Akanbi, Ilufemiloye Telu I, was yesterday presented a staff of office by the Osun State government amidst jubilations. The people of the town trooped out in large number to the venue of the occasion at the premises of Reality Televison, along Ibadan road to witness the event.

    Markets and shops were closed to honour the new monarch. The state governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, at an official coronation ceremony attended by his wife, Alhaja Serifat, his deputy, Chief Mrs. Grace Titi Laoye-Tomori, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, chairman of the event, Dr. Wale Babalakin and other dignitaries, advised Oba Akanbi to work with other traditional rulers to ensure peace in the state.

    Other dignitaries in attendance at the event include the representatives of the Alafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, the Owa Obokun of Ijeshaland, Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran, the Aragbiji of Iragbiji, Oba Adburasheed Olabomi, the Akirun of Ikirun, Oba Rauf Olayiwola Olawale Adedeji, the Olufon of Ifon-Osun, Oba Almaroof Adekunle Magbagbeola, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, the Head of Service, Mr. Sunday Owoeye and the Chief Judge, Justice Adepele Ojo.

    Others are the Asiwaju of Iwo, Barrister Gbadegesin, the Ekerin-Oluwo, Chief Bayo Aremu, the Provost of the Post Graduate College of the Osun State University, Prof. Wasiu Gbolagade. The governor congratulated the people of Iwo after the presentation of the staff of office to Oba Akanbi, and ejoined the people to support the monarch for the town to experience growth.

    Responding, Oba Akanbi, expressed gratitude to God, Governor Aregbesola? and the people of Iwo, assuring them that he would not let them down.

    Ooni gets staff of office amid tributes, jubilation

    At a colourful ceremony attended by an army of dignitaries, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Babatunde Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, yesterday received his staff of office from Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

    There was ovation as Aregbesola handed the beaded staff and a certificate to a beaming Oba Ogunwusi at Enuwa in the ancient town, which is believed to be the cradle of the Yoruba.

    Vice President Yemi Osinbajo represented President Muhammadu Buhari.

    At the epoch-making event were Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi, Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun and Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

    The royalty was well represented.

    The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Owa Obokun of Ijeshaland, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran, the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe, the Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi-Otu V, the Osemawe of Ondo, Oba  Victor Adesimbo Adenrele Ademefun Kiladejo and the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi,  were there.

    So were the Aragbiji of Iragbiji, Oba Abdulrasheed Olabomi, the Akinrun of Ikirun, Oba Olawale Olayiwola Adedeji, the Osile of Oke-Ona Egba, Oba Adedapo Tejuosho, the Olofa of Offa, Oba Mufutau Oloyede Gbadamosi, and a host of others attended the event.

    Among the eminent Nigerians applauding as Oba Ogunwusi got the instruments of office were All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader and former Lagos State Governor Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former interim national chairman of APC Chief Bisi Akande, former governor of Osun State Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, deputy governor of Osun State  Mrs. Grace Titi Laoye-Tomori, Osun State governor’s wife Mrs. Sherifat,  wife of the Chief of Staff to Osun State Governor Alhaja Kafayat Oyetola, founder of One Love Family Sat Guru Maharaj Ji, Otunba Adekunle Ojora, Chief Abiola Ogundokun, first son of the 50th Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, Prince Adetokunbo, and many others.

    Other dignitaries at the event were members of the National Assembly, members of the Houses of Assembly from Osun, Ogun and Oyo states, Christian and Muslim clerics,  academics and business magnates, among others.

    Osinbajo, who arrived at  11: 40 am, paid glowing tributes to the Ooni.

    According to him, the Ooni needs hard work, character and integrity in view of the enormous task before him

    He said: “The position is not for ostentation but for service to humanity. As we hand over the staff of office to you today, we are reminded that you have the primary responsibility of being the physical undertone of the virtue of Omoluabi.”

    Quoting the Ecclesiastes 10:16-17, Osinbajo urged the Ooni to apply God’s wisdom on the throne to succeed.

    The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ ad Abubakar, who spoke on behalf of the traditional rulers, advised Oba Ogunwusi to contribute meaningfully to the ongoing peace efforts in the country, noting that his enthronement came at a time the country needs “credible agents of peace, harmony and progress.”

    He thanked Aregbesola for accepting the choice of “a dynamic and youthful king” recommended to him by the Ife kingmakers.

    Before he presented the staff of office to the Ooni, Aregbesola urged him to imbibe the fear of God, justice, fairness and righteousness to succeed.

    He also urged him to use the throne to usher in a new era of peace, harmony, progress and prosperity not only in Ife but also in Osun State and the country.

    The governor told the Ooni: “You came to the throne at a time the Yoruba race needs progress, unity and harmony more than ever before.”

    Aregbesola then presented the staff of office to the Ooni at exactly1:51 pm amid thunderous ovation from the crowd.

    Aregbesola enjoined Oba Ogunwusi not to place personal interest ahead of the people’s interest.

    He said: “You must be guided by their interests, which include political, ideological and social. Love them, guide them,listen to them, be a father to all of them, be in touch with them and help them to achieve their goals.”

    Shops and markets in Ile-Ife were closed as a mark of honour to the Ooni.

    Early in the morning, banks in Osogbo, the state capital, were not sure whether to open to customers or not, until many of them received directives from their headquarters before clients were allowed into the banking halls.

    Deji of Akure gets staff of office

    Oba Kole Aladetoyinbo yesterday received his staff of office as the 47th Deji of Akure.

    He succeeded the late Oba Adebiyi Adesida from Ojijigogun ruling house, who died in 2013 after ruling for three years.

    The monarch, who is from Osupa ruling house, promised to promote participatory traditional governance within the kingdom.

    Oba Aladetoyinbo said in the last 120 years, it had never been so stressful for kingmakers to choose among the 13 aspirants contesting for the throne.

    He declared his determination to promote peace, respect for constituted authority and the traditional institution.

    The Deji warned that he would not condone thuggery, disrespect for law and order or any act of violence in the city.

    Oba Aladetoyinbo added that the traditional institution would be used as an important agent of meaningful development.

    The monarch thanked Governor Olusegun Mimiko for his spirit of justice, equity and fairness in the selection process.

    Mimiko, who was represented by his deputy, Lasisi Oluboyo, said the occasion marked the beginning of a new era in Akure kingdom.

    He said his administration cannot pretend not to know the aspiration of the people and their yearning for a new traditional ruler.

    The governor said the process that led to Oba Aladetoyinbo’s emergence was fair, transparent and conformed to the guideline of the constitution.

    Mimiko urged the people to support the monarch in the discharge of his duties.

    The caretaker chairman of Akure South, Adebayo Alarapon, said with the emergence of the monarch, the Erekesan market will be re-opened and economic activities restored.

    He urged the youth to restrain from being used by disgruntled elements to foment trouble.

     

  • ‘Give me staff of office’

    The Olukere of Ikere-Ekiti, Oba Obasoyin Ayodele Ganiyu, has called on Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose to present him with his staff of office six months after his installation.

    The monarch, who spoke with reporters yesterday, said the tradition of the town demanded that the traditional ruler should begin the planting season.

    He said since coronation could only be performed by the government, Fayose should intervene and remove the bottlenecks delaying his coronation.

    The Olukere said he had written to the government on the matter but was told by the officials at Bureau of Chieftaincy Affairs that his coronation was being delayed by the non-installation of a new Ogoga of Ikere.

    Ikere community has two Obas-the Olukere and the Ogoga-who had ruled the ancient community side-by-side for ages.

    The last Ogoga, Oba Adegoke Adegboye, passed on last August.

    But Oba Ganiyu said he had written to the government that his coronation should not be delayed by the non-installation of a new Ogoga, maintaining that the Olukere stool had existed before that of the Ogoga.

    “I am appealing to the governor because we know he believes in justice, equity and fair play and we urge him to accede to our request so that I can perform my duties to the best of my ability so that peace will reign in Ikere.”
