  • Buhari didn’t order Nigerians to be shot summarily, says Tinubu

All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday cautioned against misinterpreting President Muhammadu Buhari’s remarks on ballot box snatchers.

Asiwaju Tinubu said the President never ordered security agencies to shoot Nigerians summarily.

The President was quoted as saying that ballot box snatchers would not live to tell their stories once caught in the act.

Buhari spoke at the APC’s emergency National Caucus meeting in Abuja yesterday.

Tinubu told reporters after the meeting that the President was misinterpreted.

He said Buhari only reinforced his stand that ballot box snatcher will be doing so at the risk of their lives.

Tinubu said: “I was in that meeting; the President was just reinforcing the fact that if you are out there snatching ballot boxes and causing destruction, you are at risk of your own life.

“Whatever happens to you; no president will give an order that his own citizens should be shot summarily. No! No! It’s okay; emotions are running high these days. Any individual, including myself, can be misinterpreted.

“These are not his words; he is a law-abiding person and he understands categorically and clearly what the rule of law is and the lives of individual citizens that he is in that office to protect.

“Now, let me run this… he has been fighting Boko Haram insurgents, kidnappers and all these before this election. Did you ever hear him asking them to be shot and executed summarily?

“If he has gone through that in the last five years, please give the benefit of the doubt. By law, we should continue to energise our people; it depends on our resources. Because the Electoral Act allows us to continue to campaign and asks us to stop campaigning only 24 hours before the actual election; and once INEC changed the election date to February 23, it has given us the opening to campaign and energise our people. If you have a garden and you don’t nourish it with water, the grass will remain dormant. We don’t want our party to remain dormant.

“This is ability of leadership to convert adversity to opportunity and prosperity and that’s it; that’s what we must do.”

On whether the shift of the poll will affect INEC’s credibility, Tinubu said: “It depends on how it is handled and the new process; how the process is managed. You can convert what appears a crisis, a situation of adversity, to an opportunity and progress.

“The INEC, under the law, is empowered to postpone, cancel and do whatever is necessary to ensure free and fair election. No party other INEC has this power. We can express our anger and disappointment, but no party can reverse what has been done. So, we are ready for February 23.”

  • How to make power devolution work, by APC stalwart

How to make power devolution work, by APC stalwart

A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC)in Lagos State, Chief Remi Williams, has lent his support to the agitation for devotion of powers to the states. He said though devolution of powers is good, care must be taken in adopting it.

In an interview, the octogenarian said the concept forms a crucial part of the constitution.  He said: ‘’When we talk of devolution, we must be very cautious. There are certain aspects that we need not negotiate with the Federal Government. No matter what, the Federal Government will control defence, that is Army Air force, Navy etc. That aspect is not negotiable. For instance, during the Cuba crisis, the United States President John F. Kennedy took a decisive step against Fidel Castro of Cuba to checkmate his excessive actions. So also President Muhammadu Buhari took immediate steps against the Gambian insurgency. In a nutshell, devolution must have its limit. It must not be extended to foreign policy.’’

Williams said those seeking restructuring should note that the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) members who are calling councils’ autonomy would now be justified ‘’rather than be an appendage to the state for their finance.”

  • PDP stalwart, supporters, defect to APC in Enugu

A stalwart of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Amechi Ozoemena and hundreds of his supporters, have defected to the All Progressives Congress in Enugu State.

Ozoemena, who is an Abuja basedlawyer  and a grassroots politician was instrumental to the victory of the PDP in 2015 general election in Igbo Etiti Local Government.

Ozoemena, in a statement in Abuja, explained that the decision to defect to the APC was informed by the desire to contribute his quota to the development of APC government.

He said the PDP as a  party had failed to meet the yearnings of the people and lacked a viable political future in the state.

“Ndigbo need to bring their astuteness into the APC and ensure that their interest are promoted and protected,” he said.

Dr. Nwoye, in his remarks, welcomed Ozoemena and his supporters to the party, describing their decision to move to APC as the right step in the right direction.

Bayelsa rerun: We’ll checkmate PDP, says APC stalwart

A stalwart of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State, Chief Bodi Arerebo, has said that his party was adequately prepared to resist alleged plot by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to disrupt today’s supplementary poll in the state.

Arerebo who hails from Governor Seriake Dickson’s Sagbama Local Government Area, alleged that the PDP took the APC by surprise when it allegedly rolled out its violent plots to rig the December 5 controversial election.

He said: “The truth is we were very ready for the last election and we put in all our efforts for free and fair poll, but PDP did not come out in a transparent way. For example, I was in my own polling unit in my community and the PDP came with three speedboats with machetes and gun.

“But God saved me from them. All the violence that took place, it was the PDP that masterminded it. But we are ready for them this time around. And we are going to win.”

He urged the people of Southern Ijaw and other units to come out en masse to elect Sylva, saying that victory for the APC standard bearer would bring about development and empowerment.

He said with outstanding votes of over 150, 000, the APC would beat the PDP.

He said: “What transpired in that last election was as a result of the rigging and other atrocities PDP and its cohorts committed. Bayelsans are in deeply in need of change and they know that APC has come to stay.

“But now we are ready. We know what the opposition party is doing, but we are ready for them in any way they come. APC has come to give Bayelsans the best. Sylva will pay workers’ salaries and execute projects.”.

Rights activists have called for an independent investigation to unravel the killers of a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Eyitayo Peters, on Orile Road, Agege, a Lagos suburb. Peter was killed last Thursday.

Another supporter of the party, Mr Lanre Ogunjimi, was shot in the waist but was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Convener of Activists for Good Governance, Mr Declan Ihekaire, told newsmen that the dastard killing of Peters and wounding of Ogunjimi was caused by a feud between the supporters of the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ihekaire said his group’s investigation has established that the two political parties had engaged some youths to mobilise people for the collection of the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in Agege area.

Fight broke out when some youths attempted to steal the PVCs at the Methodist Primary School, Tabon-Tabon from the agents of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
