Awoniyi’s Nottingham chase points to Stamford Bridge

After giving Arsenal a good run for their money and leaving it late to see off newly-promoted Sheffield United, Nottingham Forest were in dreamland at the Theatre of Dreams last weekend, storming into a two-goal lead against Manchester United thanks to Taiwo Awoniyi’s finish and Willy Boly’s header.

Steve Cooper’s men became the first team to ever take a 2-0 lead against Man United within the opening four minutes of a Premier League game, but their master plan was soon foiled by the resurgent Red Devils, who drew themselves level through Christian Eriksen and Casemiro before Joe Worrall was sent for an early bath.

The 10 men of Forest did all they could to keep Man United at bay, but after Danilo was penalised for felling Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes completed a sensational Red Devils comeback, before Cooper’s side also succumbed to a late Zeki Amdouni winner in the EFL Cup versus Burnley.

At face value, three defeats from their opening four games of the new season is an unsightly record indeed, but the Tricky Trees – who occupy 14th place in the table – could leave the Emirates and Old Trafford patting themselves on the back.

Forest also held Chelsea to a pair of stalemates in the 2022-23 Premier League season – coming away from Stamford Bridge with a 2-2 draw to their name – but their abysmal road record now reads no wins from their last 12 top-flight games on rival turf, despite scoring in each of their last six such matches.

Pochettino was keen to focus on the positives from his side’s unconvincing EFL Cup win, one of which was having no fresh injury concerns to add to his list of 10 absentees, having played down an apparent problem for Levi Colwill.

  • Didier Drogba set for Stamford Bridge return June 16

Chelsea legend Didier Drogba will make an emotional playing return to Stamford Bridge this summer as part of Soccer Aid 2019.

The Blues hero, who won 12 major honours with Chelsea, is set to be confirmed as one of the former professionals to play in the annual charity match, scheduled to take place on June 16.

It will be the first time Drogba, 41, has played at his spiritual home since leaving his second spell at the club back in 2015

Drogba, who scored 164 goals during his two spells at the club, is sure to receive a hero’s reception back at the Bridge when he turns out for the Rest of the World to play against England given his legendary status among Chelsea supporters.

The game at Stamford Bridge is the first time Soccer Aid has been played at a club stadium other than Old Trafford in its 13-year history.

In recent months, the former striker’s foundation has helped pay for a new mobile heart clinic, opened a new school as well as providing computer facilities for various educational projects.

‘I am very excited to be coming back to Stamford Bridge to play in Soccer Aid for Unicef,’ Drogba said.

‘I am passionate about all children having access to healthcare and education, which is key to Unicef’s work around the world. I’m delighted that my foundation and UNICEF are planning a project together in Cote D’Ivoire.

Together we can help make a real difference to so many children’s lives, and have a greater impact than ever before.’

Meanwhile, Chelsea have lodged an appeal against their two window transfer ban, imposed by FIFA.

The Blues are currently prevented from signing any players either this summer or January for breaking the rules surrounding the transfer of minors.

FIFA confirmed on Monday that Chelsea – who were also fined £460,000 – have lodged an official appeal against the ruling, with the hearing to take place on April 11.

John Terry named Villa captain for 2017/18 season

John Terry has been appointed as the new captain of Aston Villa.

The 36-year-old former England and Chelsea skipper takes the armband from James Chester, and wore it for the first time on his Villa debut in Saturday’s pre-season friendly against Shrewsbury.

Terry joined the club earlier this month, signing a one-year deal with the Sky Bet Championship side as manager Steve Bruce sets his sights on mounting a promotion push for the 2017/18 season.

Appointed Chelsea skipper in 2004, he captained the Blues to back-to-back Premier League titles before adding three more during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Terry’s move to Villa Park, one of the most lucrative ever signed by a player in the Championship, could see him earn £4m if he can help secure a successful promotion campaign.

The club’s unveiling of the defender, via a mocked-up WhatsApp chat featuring owner Dr Tony Xia, included the phrase “Captain. Leader. VILLAN,” playing on Chelsea fans’ description of Terry as “Captain, Leader, Legend”.

Chelsea youngster Aina joins Hull on loan

Their friendship is expected to lead to more Chelsea youth products heading to the KCOM Stadium during the close season.

Aina who spent eight years with the  Chelsea youth team for eight years before moving to the senior department in 2015, described his current loan move as another opportunity to further showcase his skills.

“I’m looking forward to getting to know all of my new team-mates during the training camp in Portugal.”

  • How Antonio Conte Transformed Chelsea and Won the Title

How Antonio Conte Transformed Chelsea and Won the Title

With Chelsea lifting the Premier League trophy, here is how Antonio Conte returned winning ways to Stamford Bridge.

It was 14th July 2016 when Antonio Conte walked into Stamford Bridge for the first time. The flashbulbs popped, as he spoke in careful, uncertain English about how he was a tailor who would find the correct suit for his new team. Emperor’s new clothes? Or catwalk clobber? We were about to find out…

Let there be no mistake about it, Conte has worked miracles this season. Were it not for the fairytale of Leicester‘s title win, we’d be talking about this as the greatest turnaround in Premier League history. And he has done all this with no fanfare; in his own quiet, unassuming, self-deprecating way.

The first step towards glory came back in February 2016 – five months before he was unveiled as Chelsea boss. It was his first meeting with Roman Abramovich and Michael Emenalo, and he bore a list of players he needed to make Chelsea great again. At the top of that list was the man who would go on to be double player of the year, this campaign: N’Golo Kante.

Kante, in so many ways, mirrors Conte’s personality. Publicly quiet, incredibly determined, a man with little time for frippery. It was a match made in heaven and – along with the re-signing of David Luiz, plus the acquisition of unfancied wing back Marcos Alonso – cast the mould for the season to follow.

All the talk coming from Italy about Conte focused on his intensity. It spoke of a man who would eat, sleep and breathe football – living every kick of every game both in real time, and for the other 22 and a half hours of the day.

That was accurate; but it overlooked a good humour, and a relaxed nature, which helped lift the fug of failure of Jose Mourinho‘s scorched earth final months, and the diffident team reaction to Guus Hiddink.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho talks to the media during a press conference at Chelsea Training Ground on December 11, 2015 in Cobham, England.

It was evident from that first moment, when he smiled at the press pack: most of us hadn’t seen a smile born of anything other than sarcasm or embarrassment for a good 12 months. And he worked that apparently innocent nature on us all – players, reporters, fans.

Once it came to winning games it was combined with a naked passion which made him an everyman hero: thrusting himself into celebratory surges; handing out hugs like some Biblical healer; applauding, in the end, the supporters of an opposing relegated team.

He was impossible not to like. Even among Chelsea’s tight-knit first team – he very rarely deviated from a stock of 13 players unless forced – those on the outside seemed content to ride the wave. Diego Costa‘s mid-season disaffection, caused by the Chinese interest which will surely ensnare him this summer, was damped-down by Conte with no more than a single game’s dissent.

Michy Batshuayi, framed from Conte’s first press conference as a club investment, was the source of no public outcry at his almost total omission from the project. And John Terry, whose shading-out of the side had been mis-managed by at least three preceding managers, seemed to accept his fate out in the cold with an air of inevitability.

What other manager could name a club legend as his captain in one breath, then convince him to take one for the team by sitting out the season with the next?

Much of the scrutiny of this unexpected success has concentrated on Conte’s switch in formation to 3-4-3. But even that came about because of the nature of the man we have in front of us.

Having next to no pre-season in which to work things out – he came straight from Italy’s Euros – he had to work on evolving this side in real time. And by taking that pragmatic, reasoned approach, tempered by his good humoured but determined personality, he found the solution – unveiled at Arsenal – which would dominate analysis of this campaign.

But Conte, as he has shown this season, is so much more than a great tactician. He is a great manager: of players; of the press; of the fans; of his own personal affairs, flying his wife and daughter over each weekend to keep the spark of family intimacy alive while he works away from home.

The scores of selfies on social media – at train stations and restaurants; with cab drivers and street sweepers – show the bond he has formed; not just with Chelsea’s fans, but with London itself.

Conte has achieved all of this, and a Premier League title, in 10 months flat. While the pre-season talk was all about the Iberian managerial beasts of Manchester, the history books will surely record the supremacy of a quiet, but passionate, London-based Italian.

This has been Conte and Chelsea’s season, and the Premier League feels a much better place for it.

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois confirmed he has split from his pregnant girlfriend after years together.

The Chelsea and Belgium No 1 confirmed the split in a statement – and the announcement could be good at Blues fans hoping he will stay at Stamford Bridge.

The statement read: ‘My girlfriend Marta and I are no longer together. Since the beginning of September, we have decided to end our relationship, on amicable terms.

Chelsea starlet Wakefield buys £25,000 Jaguar for dad

Chelsea academy star Charlie Wakefield surprised his dad on his 50th birthday with a special present – a £25,000 Jaguar XE.

Some 18-year-olds are lucky if they get a car from their dad at that age, but when you sign your first professional deal with Chelsea aged 17, treating your dad to a luxury motor is one of the perks.

A successful youth player at Stamford Bridge, where he has been part of FA Youth Cup and UEFA Youth League successes, Charlie has now made sure that his dad can leave his old 2003 plate Ford Focus behind and turn up to his son’s games in style.

Wakefield signed a professional contract with Chelsea when he was aged 17, back in July 2015

In a touching post on Instagram, Wakefield shared a picture of his dad, Mark, in front of his new car with a long message thanking him for supporting his journey to becoming a young professional.

In the identical caption alongside the two social media posts, Wakefield wrote: ‘My dad turned 50 years old today and after 2 years of planning his surprise birthday present, the day finally came. I wouldn’t have got as far as I have without this man, I owe him everything.

‘He deserves everything and I can’t thank him enough. Everyone I know loves him. HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my Dad, and the man I’ve always looked up to. Love you’

Super Eagles forward Victor Moses has signed a two- year contract extension to keep him at the Stamford Bridge until 2021, the premier league leaders confirmed Wednesday.

The 26-year-old joined Chelsea from Wigan Athletic in 2012 and spent each of the past three seasons on loan at Liverpool, Stoke City and West Ham respectively.

But he has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign under Antonio Conte this time around after being successfully redeployed to right wing-back.

His first start in what was an unfamiliar role came in a 2-0 victory at Hull City in October – a result that began a record-equaling run of 13 consecutive wins in the same Premier League season.

Moses has made 25 top-flight appearances this term, scoring three goals.

Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, the Nigeria international said: “I feel very excited. I’m delighted to be here for another few years now and to sign a new deal.

“Now it’s time to concentrate on the team and keep working hard to make sure we win games and try to win the Premier League this season.

“We’re having a great season, I’m enjoying my football and we have a good manager here that has given every single one of us confidence. I just want to keep on enjoying it and working hard for the team.”

Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo added: “We are extremely pleased Victor has chosen to extend his contract with us. He is enjoying an excellent season and, under Antonio’s leadership, has proved to be an important member of the squad.

“This new contract is testament to Victor’s hard work and dedication to succeed at Chelsea and we believe he will be a big part of our future success.”

Moses will face one of his former clubs when Chelsea returns to Premier League action at West Ham on Monday.

Conte’s men currently have a 10-point lead over Tottenham in second.

The Nigerian international earned a seven out of ten rating in the match being at par with only kante, Costa and Hazard getting a rating or two above him by independent assessors.

Arsenal however have Olivier Giroud to thank for extra time consolation goal

The victory for Chelsea coach Antonie Conte is not just about three points but also represents sweet revenge as he the Blues equally suffered a 3-0 demolition at the Emirates in September.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger however frowned at the opening goal insisting it was a foul and should have been ruled out.

Arsenal right-back Hector Bellerin had to go off after being caught in the face by Alonso’s forearm as the wing-back leapt to put Chelsea in front in the 13th minute.

“It was a foul. It was 100 percent a foul. It was even dangerous play,” said Wenger, who watched the game from the stands as he served the third game of a four-match touchline ban.

Chelsea confirm Conte as new manager

Chelsea football club have confirmed Antonio Conte as the new manager ending months of speculations by football fans.

Antonio Conte penning down a three- year contract deal with the London club on Monday and he will take charge by next season.

Chelsea  sacked Jose Mourinho in December after an unimpressive performance and the start of the season and hired  Guus Hiddink as the interim coach for the team.

The Blues are still unbeaten in the Premier League since the Dutchman took over – their 15-game streak is the longest undefeated run in the division this season – and still have a slim chance of qualifying for Europe.

However, the Italy coach will remain in charge of the Azzurri at European Champion 2016, after which he will take the reins at Stamford Bridge having beaten off plenty of competition to land the job
