Sultan of Sokoto and President-General, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar and President, Dangote Group of Companies Alhaji Aliko Dangote led three other bigwigs to receive Merit Award from an Islamic group, Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation (ZSF) in Lagos. TAJUDEEN ADEBANJO reports

    •Group honours Sultan, Dangote, others

None of them, except the family of the late Secretary-General of Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Abdullateef Adegbite had a hint about the award. The letters sent to them merely invited them to Lagos for a ceremony by the Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation (ZSF), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), working for the revival of Zakat, one of the five pillars of Islam. Zakat is the payment of a certain percentage of income at the end of each year to promote Islamic courses.

On January 11, the foundation honoured Sultan of Sokoto and President-General, NSCIA, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar; former Kano State Governor Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau; President, Dangote Group of Companies Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Chairman, Jaiz Bank Plc Alhaji Umaru Abdul Mutallab. The late Adegbite got a post-humous award.

Sultan Abubakar was honoured for his efforts to unite Muslims in the country; ensuring peaceful co-existence with faiths and persistent calls for institutionalisation of Zakat.

Mallam Shekarau’s presence at the foundation’s function in Lagos then as Kano State governor and assistance with huge funds to build the Zakat House earned him the award.

Aside paying Zakat, Alhaji Abdul Mutallab signed the foundation’s letter to wealthy Muslims to channel their Zakat through the foundation, which yielded positive responses. He facilitated the meeting between ZSF and former Finance Minister when Islamic Development Bank (IDB) demanded a correspondence from the ministry before sponsoring Zakat training programme in Lagos.

Alhaji Dangote supported the foundation in a big way while the late Adegbite was said to be exemplary in all ways. Shortly before his death, he talked to people on behalf of the foundation to people to pay their Zakat.

The Ninth Zakat Distribution Ceremony was held at the New Great Hall of the College Of Medicine, University Of Lagos, Idi-Araba, Mushin, Lagos.

It began with the historic opening of the Baytul Zakat (Zakat House) by Sultan Abubakar at Olajide Street near the popular Babalola Bus Stop in Ilasamaja in Mushin.

He cut the tape assisted by the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari; Alhaji Abdul Mutallab; Chief Imam of Lagos Alhaji Garuba Akinola Ibrahim; Baba Adinni of Lagos Sheikh AbdulHafeez Abou; ZSF Chairman, Prince Sulayman Olagunju and its Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer Imam Abdullahi Shuaib.

Sultan Abubakar also unveiled the plaque before leading the guests to LUTH for the main ceremony.

On learning that Sultan Abubakar and the Emir of Ilorin were around, the residents trooped out to catch a glimpse of them.

Others lined up from Ishaga Close Bus Stop to LUTH gate as a mark of honour for the Sultan.

Shortly after the ceremony started with opening prayer by the Chief Imam of Lagos, Sheikh Garuba Ibrahim, a large entourage of Hausa community led by the Serikin Hausawa of Lagos and that of Idi-Araba stormed the hall. Muslim clerics in Mushin led by the Chief Imam of Mushinland and President, Council of Ulamau and Mushin Muslim Community, Sheikh Sulaimon Olanijo were also in attendance.

Alhaji Abdul Mutallab described the day as special”in our history with the official opening of our Zakat House whose construction began in 2009 during Dr Adegbite’s reign”.

Alhaji Mutallab, who chaired the occasion, singled out Mallam Shekarau for his “handsome” donation towards the project.

He appealed to wealthy Muslims to pay their Zakat as at when due and also channel their Sadaqah (charity) to ZSF for an efficient and effective disbursement to the poor and the needy.

There were lectures by the National Missioner of Al-Fatiu Quareeb Society of Nigeria Sheikh Sulaiman Adangba and Executive Secretary, Muslim Ummah of Southwest Nigeria (MUSWEN) Prof Daud Noibi.

Shuaib thanked the Sultan for his fatherly support over the years.

“His concern, thoughtfulness and advice have always been inspiring and motivating. We appreciate your selfless service and servant-leadership style you have adopted since your assumption of office as the seventh Sultan,” Imam Shuaib said.

He also acknowledged the support of the late Dr Adegbite, who he said had passion for Zakat collection and distribution during his life time.

“We shall always be grateful to him for his candour and erudition. May Allah grant him peace of the grave and easy entry into Paradise,” he said.

Imam Shuaib described the awardees as “five outstanding Nigerians,” whose contributions and services to humanity are appreciable.

“Our appreciation equally goes to all our invited guests, starting with Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, (SAN); Dr Muiz Banire, the Interim National Legal Adviser to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Olatunde Babatunde Adepitan, the Chairman of Mushin Local Government Area, the president and members of the CMUL/LUTH Muslim community,” he said.

There were goodwill messages from NSCIA Secretary-General Prof Ishaq Oloyede; Adepitan, Emir of Ilorin, United Kingdom-based Imam Dr Khalid Yasir, Political Officer in the United States Consulate in Nigeria Kathrina Drayton and Dr Halimat Alimi of An Nour Eye Centre.

An elated Sultan Abubakar enjoined Nigerians to pray fervently for the country.

“We need prayers for our leaders to lead us right; we need good leadership in this country that can take us to the promise land,” he said.

He called on those in government to complement the foundation’s effort to reduce poverty in the society. ‘’People should be encouraged to pay Zakat,’’ he said, adding that the body will speak with the government to institutionalise Zakat and pass it into law.

Alhaji Sulu-Gambari praised the foundation for reviving the third pillar of Islam – Zakat.

He corroborated Sultan Abubakar’s call for prayer.

Prayers, he said, would go a long way to stem the rot in the society.

Alhaji Akinola described prayers as tools to drive away evil.

There were symbolic distribution of cheques and materials worth N90 million before the presentation of the awards.

Guests stretched their necks to watch as big plaques were presented to the awardees while Sultan Abubakar got a giant frame, customised in his name.

Prince Olagunju thanked the guests for coming, while the Grand Mufti, Sharia Panel of the foundation, Sheikh Dhikrullahi Shafi’I said the closing prayer.

  • Big stars must be committed — Keshi

Big stars must be committed — Keshi

Nigeria head coach, Stephen Keshi, has explained why he opted to exclude some of the nation’s established stars from the 2013 Afcon squad.

Keshi, 51, was on the football magazine show, Monday Night Football on SuperSport and gave detailed explanation on his decision to leave out the like of Peter Odemwingie, Obafemi Martins, Kalu Uche, Taye Taiwo and Yakubu Aiyegbeni among others.

He hinged his stance on attitudinal problems with the superstars. Keshi was also specific in explaining the Africa Cup of Nations blackout for Obafemi and Odemwingie.

“If you have one or two who do not get along, whether they are superstars or not, the team will fall apart. We can manage some of these players with a little bit of character problems, but when it comes to a long period of time, that’s difficult.

“Odemwingie is a very good player, a player I will love to have in the team, but he wants to do what he wants to do. We talked on the phone, and I told him what I wanted from him, but he had his own notion and I said ‘for now I will skip you.’

“We decided not to take some of these superstars to the Nations Cup because it is (a competition with) a long period of time and for the long period of time, you need characters who go together. Martins was not ready for the Cup of Nations. But he is still part of the group. If his name is in the next call-up, if he wants to come, we will see how it goes,” Keshi said.

However, Keshi was full of praises for Newcastle United striker, Shola Ameobi, who did not turn up for the AFCON despite being named in the pre-tournament provisional squad.

Keshi also held up his hand in defence of Ameobi missing the AFCON due to a clause in his contract.

“Honestly, I missed Shola Ameobi. In our game against Venezuela, he showed a lot of presence in the locker room, and he came in with this coaching ability and togetherness. Whenever he talked to the boys they always listened. And you could imagine that this was the first time he was coming.

“That was what I was looking for on the pitch. A leader in somebody who could talk for me on the pitch, because I know what I did as a captain on the pitch. He was really ready to come, but what was on his contract denied him from coming,” said the former Mali and Togo coach.

The Nigerian manager then broke off to talk on his 14 years as captain of the men’s national team, adding that he was “not bigger than Nigeria” in spite of being the skipper.

“In the national team, where I was captain for 14 years, you are nothing but a figure in the team, you are not bigger than Nigeria. If you are not ready to give the green and white shirt the due respect, you are walking out of my team,” warned Keshi.

  • Maigari challenges Leagues to produce more stars

Maigari challenges Leagues to produce more stars

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Aminu Maigari on Tuesday in Abuja challenged the various Leagues to produce more heroes and stars for Nigerian football, in the mould of Super Eagles’ Cup of Nations boys Sunday Mba and Godfrey Oboabona.

“The Leagues have the responsibility to work even harder now to produce heroes for Nigerian football, following the excellent performance of some home boys at the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa. Surely, the reward for our success in South Africa will be more work on the part of all of us – the NFF, the State FAs, the Leagues and our various clubs.

“In football, you are as good as your last result. Today, we are the champions of Africa. To maintain that status, we need to work even harder than we have ever done previously. Staying at the top is a lot more difficult than getting there. But be assured that the NFF will always give the necessary support,” said Maigari.

The NFF President spoke at the opening ceremony of the Congress of the Nigeria Nationwide League, which held at the West Point Hotel, Abuja.

The Honourable Minister/Chairman, National Sports Commission, Bolaji Abdullahi was represented by the Director of Grassroots Sports Development, Alhassan Yakmut, who laced his address with encomiums for Maigari and the NFF for the Super Eagles’ triumph at the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Maigari is the first man to preside over Nigerian football at a time the nation is champion of Africa at both junior and senior levels. The U-20 National Team, Flying Eagles, is set to defend its continental crown at the African Youth Championship in Algeria next month.

Also at the Natonwide League’s congress opening ceremony were Hon. Godfrey Ali Gaiya, chairman of the House of Reps’ Committee on Sports, NFF Executive Committee members, Yusuf Fresh and Dilichukwu Onyedinma, NFF General Secretary, Barr. Musa Amadu, Director of Technical, Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme and Director of Competitions, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi. President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Eng. Sani Ndanusa was represented by the President of Traditional Sports Association.

The theme of the congress, which also took in the Draw Ceremony for the season, is: Using Football As A Tool Of Fighting Current Challenges Facing Our Country.

KESHI TO NFF: Eagles need 3 more stars

Fresh from winning the Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi is already planning ahead and says his squad needs about three more players to be complete.

Keshi took a team of virtual unknowns and moulded them into a formidable, title-winning unit but says his squad is still a work in progress

“We are still building. This team is not complete yet. We need about three more players and a little more time to get to where we want,” Keshi told KickOffNigeria.com.

But the coach would not be drawn on which positions he needed to fill with these additional numbers.

“We know what we want, and we are working on it. We will look at different players, and in due course, I believe we have the talent in and outside the country to get what we want.”

•Reuben, Idris fitness boost for Eagles

AFTER OVER three months of layoff from the national team’s camp as a result of injuries, Kano Pillars duo of Gabriel Reuben and Papa Idris, were the cynosure of all eyes as the Super Eagles opened camp for the African Cup of Nations in Abuja, with its first training session.

There were fears that the two players who have been part of the national team from the home front since Stephen Keshi took over about a year ago may not be fit on time for the AFCON 2013 championship, but they came out sparkling in training on Monday morning at the Practice Pitch of the Abuja National Stadium.

Team doctor Ibrahim Gyaran, who later spoke on the state of health of the two players passed them fit for hostilities in the run-up to the championship.

“The only fear I have is that since they have not played competitive football for sometimes they will still experience some mind jitters. But that is only a thing of the mind and the team psychologist, Dr Robinson Okosun and the coaching crew are already working on that aspect,” he declared.

At Monday morning training session, 22 players trained with only Akwa United’s Bassey E, and Fengor Ogude of Velaranga of Norway, who is expected to join the team, were not at the early morning training session. The players were grilled on fitness, tactics and general conditioning for a championship of the magnitude of the Nations Cup.

Head Coach, Stephen Keshi again assured the players that if they prove worthy of a place in the team and better than their European based counterpart they will be picked for the championship.

“It will be my delight if 10 players prove good enough to make the championship roster and I will be happy if at all times four of such players start every game but you have to prove it on the pitch that you are ready for the challenge,” he told the players before training commenced. The team’s training continues today in Abuja.

  • Rangers stop Enugu All Stars

    Rangers stop Enugu All Stars

RANGERS have extended their fine form in pre-season as they defeated a strong Enugu All Stars 2-0 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu. Fred Okwara, who featured for Enugu All Stars, told MTNFootball.com: “It was a difficult game for both sides. We created our chances, but failed to utilise them, while they converted their own and that is the difference. I wish them well in the coming season.”

Former Enyimba striker Razaq Adegbite gave Rangers the lead with a well taken effort from a very tight angle after some neat interchange of passes in the middle by Anthony Okemiri and Chisom Egbuchulam set the attacker for a clinical finish on the half hour mark.

After this goal the All Stars, who had the likes of Okwara and Wikki ace Bishop Onyeudo, swarmed all over Rangers like bees, but were stoutly repulsed by the Cyril Oriaku-led defence. With only 10 minutes to the end of the game, a swift counter attack from Rangers saw former Warri Wolves attacker Lazarus Chukwu outrun his marker to deliver an inch-perfect cross for Onoriode Odah to poke into a yawning net for the second goal.
