  • Badeh’s statement on Armed Forces

SIR: “All truth passes through three stages: First, it is ridiculed; second, it is violently opposed: and third, it is accepted as self-evident”, so said Arthur Schopenhauer. In other words, truth can be ridiculed, violently opposed for a while but in the end it has the capacity to manifest and be accepted as self-evident. The statement of the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh is the point in mind here.

While delivering his valedictory address at his pulling-out from the Nigerian Armed Forces, Air Chief Marshal Badeh said inter alia that; “For the first time, I was head of a military that lacked the relevant equipment and motivation to fight an enemy that was invisible and embedded with the local populace”.

It will be recalled that sometime last year, some soldiers who legitimately demanded for relevant equipment to fight the insurgents were surprisingly charged with conspiracy to mutiny (insubordination or insurrection of the armed forces against the authority of their commanders), tried and convicted and sentenced to death by the general court-martial.

The same concern raised by the affected soldiers is what has now been confirmed by Badeh. For daring to expose the true state of affairs in the military (i.e. lack of relevant weapons) despite the mind-boggling sums voted for security, they were considered APC soldiers who needed to be confined or silenced immediately. Remember, this happened at a time when any action or information that was of adverse effect to Jonathan’s presidential ambition was linked to the APC by the PDP and those who were sympathetic to Jonathan.

This evidence is credible enough to set the convicted soldiers free. It’s a clarion call for President Muhammadu Buhari to order an immediate review of the solders conviction and death sentence. They should be released forthwith to re-unite with their families, with apology and adequate compensation for defamation of character, malicious prosecution, false imprisonment etc.

On the other hand, the activities of the fifth columnists in the military and other security agencies who leaked (and still leak) operational plans and other sensitive military information to the terrorists must be investigated and those found culpable sanctioned as may be in tandem with extant laws.

Again, it is contended that while it is the responsibility of the military to maintain the territorial integrity of the nation and secure its borders from violation on land, sea or air, it is equally the responsibility of the Federal Government to equip and maintain the military as may be considered adequate and effective for the purpose. President Muhammadu Buhari should rise to this challenge of adequately equipping and maintaining the military as it is the only sure way of building a reliable military and defeating the war against Boko Haram. The president’s initiative in tackling this challenge so far is highly commended. His recent official visit to the US is expected to sooner than later make this challenge a thing of the past.

As for Badeh, his statement would have been appreciated if he had the courage to voice this out in the days of the Jonathan administration. Even if he would have been fired as was typical of the administration, it would have catapulted him into the league of true professionals.

Group chides Fayose over uncouth statement against Buhari

A group, the Grassroots Mobilisation for Muhammadu Buhari, has berated the Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose over his recent uncouth statements against the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Gen Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement by its National Coordinator, Mr Remi Oyebamiji, the group said Fayose exhibited lack of depth in his contribution at the interaction with civil right activities in Lagos.

He said: “Mr. Ayo Fayose, the audacious  and uncouthed Governor of Ekiti State exhibited lack of depth in his contribution at the interaction with civil right activities. In his trademark of abuse, disrespect, crude and uncivilised comments on Gen. Buhari (rtd) APC flag bearer, he described him as old, physically unfit and mentally incapable of leading the country.

“We need to ask Mr. Ayo Fayose the credentials he parades academically and intellectually that can compare him with Gen. Buhari’s astuteness, brilliance, mental alertness. Even Fayose’s principal cannot stand, Gen Buhari in mental, alertness, intellectual depth in good governance. Just recently the symbol of CHANGE and BRAND Gen Buhari (rtd) received a standing ovation at Chatham House, London U.K after a brilliant presentation and question and answer sessions on issues that bother on governance.”

According to Oyebamiji,  Fayose’s myopic opinion that the North should wait until 2019 for the Presidency, has reduced Nigeria to a banana republic at the expense of the clueless leadership PDP offers.

He said Fayose’s remarks about Governor Fashola’s performance is nothing but hypocrisy and distaste for good governance. Oyebamiji said Lagos State has become the standard for which other states including Federal Government are measured in terms of dividend of democracy and good governance.

He urged Ekiti people to call a family meeting on Fayose and take concrete decision on the bad conduct and demeanour has brought shame to the integrity and wellbeing of Ekiti people.

Oyebamiji added: “Ekiti State stands out among the states of Nigeria with indigenes that have distinguished themselves in all areas of human endeavour. The state has assemblage of best brains any nation can be proud of. Here is a Governor whose antecedent speaks nothing but mediocracy, brigandage, impunity, indiscipline and fraud.

“The Yoruba nation also needs to be on the alert. It is one servant that makes others to be despised. Like the bird “Elulu” calling for rain when the rains will come, the flood will sweep away everybody and everything on its part.”

    • Says Glasshouse won’t join issues with Gov. Amaechi

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has flatly rejected a statement by Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi that the Federation is graft-ridden.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, Chairman of the NFF Media and Publicity Committee, Emeka Inyama said Amaechi’s statement at Monday’s Presidential Retreat on Sports at the Banquet Hall of State House, Abuja was in bad taste.

“The present NFF Board is not corrupt and has been employing global best practices in its dealings.“While we are unwilling to join issues with the Chairman of the Governors’ Forum, plastic allegations of corruption against persons and institutions are weighty and damaging and should not be thrown in a flippant manner.

“Of course, Governor Amaechi later told the NFF President and General Secretary at the private session that he was referring to a previous NFA administration. But he failed to make that clarification in his public statement, thereby leaving his speech to mischievous interpretation.

“The present NFF administration is employing global best practices in running Nigerian football and the Executive Committee members are elected, just like other top public office holders. They deserve regard and respect.”

Inyama noted that unsubstantiated allegations of graft against public office holders have become trendy, but cautioned that highly-placed individuals have a responsibility to refrain from unjust attacks against agencies that work assiduously for the progress of the nation.

“Football is the biggest factor that unites Nigerians and the present NFF is very much alive to its responsibilities of ensuring that joy is derived anytime a national team steps out to represent the country. The board has assiduously striven to employ highest etiquettes in all its dealings including management of scarce resources in executing itsassignments.

“The entire envelope of the NFF for this year is N1.9 Billion, while an average match of the Super Eagles cost about N120 million. There are 11 national teams, eight of which are always engaged in qualifying campaigns and championships. Yet, we get punched here and there for no justifiable reason.

“The truth is that, without the financial support of the Governors of Cross River, Lagos, Kwara, Edo and Kaduna States, we would have found it difficult prosecuting all our international matches and competitions this year, and we thank them immensely,” Inyama concluded.
