  • Praises as station marks first anniversary

It was an unbridled outpouring of encomiums as a private radio station in Calabar, the Cross River State capital; Sparkling 92.3 FM marked its first year anniversary.

Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade, who spoke during the station’s inaugural lecture to mark the anniversary in Calabar, said the station added a new vista to broadcasting in the state.

Ayade commended the station, saying they have maintained a high standard in terms of content.

The governor, who spoke through the Permanent Secretary, Dr Aye Henshaw Jnr, said Sparkling FM has also improved the electronic media architecture in the state and created employment for the people.

He said people of Cross River State are beneficiaries and are better off for the station has broadened perspective and it is good people always get all the perspectives they can at all times for development of the society.

The governor praised the station for adding value to the ability of the people to access information, adding that under his administration, private stations have been sprouting, exemplifying the practicing democracy, as it should be.

While wishing them well, he urged the managers of the station to step up and expand their capacity.

Managing Director of the radio station, Mr. Innocent Idiongette, said they had, in the last one year, established themselves as a brand that delivers on the core tenets of broadcasting and journalism.

“This is reflected in our ranking as one of the best radio stations in Cross River State and in just one year as evidenced in the awards and recognitions that we have received from various organisations.

“Interestingly, the journey has just begun and the target is that our station will grow to be a major contributor to policy permutation and implementation, and social trends at all levels in the society,” he said.

In a keynote address by a former Head of Civil Service in the state, Chief Wilfred Inah, it was pointed out that there is no profession without inherent risks in its practice, but the hazards of journalism are immense.

Inah urged that in spite of all odds, the mass media should go ahead and play its role as the Fourth Estate of the Realm and complement the three arms of government, by identifying topical areas and focusing on them as its contribution to governance.

The guest lecturer, Prof. Offiong Ani Offiong, who spoke on the role of the media in national economic development with focus on Cross River, said media stations have strong roles to play in nation-building, even as he called for establishment of more private media outfits. He also urged them to start having television stations in addition to their radio stations.

He noted that before the advent of new private broadcasting stations in the state, development strives were very slow and the government was more lackadaisical, adding that the station has done a lot in checkmating the excesses of government.

Ani said Sparkling FM has won awards in the past one year; showing their dexterous capability in the area of national development using their informative and entertainment skills.

“Just one year after establishing the station, they have been named the radio station of the year in the South-South zone of the country and just two weeks after as the campus choice of the year. They have done well,” he said.

He said the state government and its citizens have been able to benefit from very good broadcasters and journalists working in various media organisations.

General Manager of Sparkling 92.3 FM in Calabar, Mr. Effiong Nyong, said the lecture, which was part of activities to mark the anniversary would continue annually and would be focused on looking at different aspects of society.

He said the maiden edition was focused on the role of the media in national economic development using Cross River State as a case study.

“The essence of this lecture is to help the government and other business stakeholders explore the potential in the media to attain economic prosperity. For anything the government wants to do, the people need to know and understand. But we have a peculiar situation in Nigeria where every other activities of the government are secret.

“Because there is no openness, we have a situation where much of what government achieves is not known by the people. What thrive in the public space are rumours,” he said.

Among other events to mark the anniversary, he said, were a Disc Jockey festival; separate novelty football matches between old boys and current students of Hope Waddell Training Institute and St Patrick’s College; and a visit to the orphanage.

Proprietors of eight filling stations in Akwa Ibom State are to be prosecuted for violating the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) seal off order, the Controller (Operations), Mr. Tamunoiminabo Kingsley-Sundaye, has said.

He spoke yesterday in Uyo when the surveillance team of DPR carried out operations.

Kingsley-Sundaye listed the stations as ABC filling station, Oil Link Lubrication Ltd, UdyChris filling station, Tonimas filling station, Sannil filling station, First Indices filling station, Nickgloson filling station and Spicy filling station.

He said they were located on Ikot Ekpene road, Uyo, Abak road, Uyo and Aka Itiam in Uyo Local Government.

“We are writing to the police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to arrest owners of these stations and prosecute them,” Kingsley-Sundaye said.

He said when the team visited the stations that had been sealed off to find out the level of compliance, eight of them were caught selling fuel with DPR seal.

“We had sealed off the eight stations for selling above approved government pump price of N145 per litre,” Kingsley-Sundaye said.

He said the marketers disrespected the Federal Government price regime, adding that they would be prosecuted.

Kingsley-Sundaye said the stations would be suspended from loading at the depot.

“We are writing to the depot to stop these stations from lifting petroleum products,” he added.

The      DPR controller of operation said their suspension would act as a deterrent to others.

He warned independent marketers to desist from selling fuel to black marketers carrying jerry-cans.

Kingsley-Sundaye said the department seized 50 litres of petrol and 100 jerry-cans of the product from black marketers, who sold fuel opposite NNPC filling station in Uyo.

‘’With the assistance of the government, we have been able to bring back civil authority but we still find out that there are some cultists that are still disturbing.

‘’About seven cultists from Greenlanders and Icelanders were apprehended. They invaded the police station to rescue Prince Ayibalaifa, who was detained for indecent assault. They actually rescued the person and escaped, but they were re-arrested.’’

  • Community seeks station upgrade

Bothered by the crime upsurge in the community and the need to forestall atrocities such as kidnapping, robbery and ritual killings, the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) Area E Command Adoff Ojo has called on the Inspector-General of Police to fulfil his promise of upgrading the Iba Police Station to a Divisional Headquarters..

The appeal was contained in a statement signed by the Chairman of PCRC, General Secretary, and grand Patron of the Zone Messrs. Phillip Uzor, John Leo Okpala and the Oniba of Iba land Oba Goriola Oseni respectively.

Recall that Oba Oseni, a first-class king in Lagos, was abducted by kidnappers from his palace on Saturday, July 16 this year. He was, however, released on August 16.

The statement reads in part: “Sir, the population of Iba at present stands at 25,000 according to the 2006 census. Besides, Iba Town, which has over 36 communities, has been the traditional headquarters of the old Ojo. Its jurisdiction includes Okoko division, Ishashi and Lagos State University (LASU).

In a chat with Southwest Report in his palace on Monday, Oba Oseni, who thanked the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for coming to his rescue when he was in the kidnappers’ den five months ago, recalled that the former Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umaru Manko visited him shortly after his (Oniba) release where the issue of the upgrade was discussed.

During the meeting, the monarch said Manko had insisted that before the upgrade could be affected, new facilities such as water borehole, armoury, a power generating set, provision of walkie Talkie for administrative staff, among others, must first be put in place as part of parameters for the upgrade of Iba Police Station.

“Now all those things requested are now available. We want them (police) to come here and see what we have done. We are now very confident that the facilities are good enough to earn us the new status we desire,” Oba Oseni said.

  • 10 years after, NDPHC opens 330kv station in Akwa Ibom

The Niger Delta Power Holding Company Limited (NDPHC) which  superintends the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) has inaugurated the 330kV switching station located in Essien Udim / Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area of Awka Ibom State.

Its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Chiedu Ugbo, said the projects started in 2006, but disrupted by poor funding and communal problems, which led to protracted court cases. He added that with the  support of the Federal Government, the projct saw the light of day.

He listed the components of the facilities to include the 35KM 330kv Alaoji Substation to Ikot-Ekpene substation double circuit line to evacuate power from NIPP Alaoji Power Plant; the 70.3km 330kv double circuit line from Calabar to Ikot Ekpene to evacuate power from NIPP Calabar power plant.

Others are the 162km 330kV double circuit line which evacuates all power from Ikot Ekpene switching station to the grid at Ugwuaji; and the 12-circuit Ikot Ekpene 330kv switching station that will serve as the central switching hub for receiving generated power from four generating locations at Alaoji, Afam, Calabar and Ikot-Abasi.

At the event were Akwa Ibom State Deputy Governor Mr. Moses Frank Ekpo, Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, Finance and Administration, NDPHC, Mallam Babayo Shehu, among others.

According to a statement by NDPHC’s Communications and Public Relations General Manager, Mr. Yakubu Lawal, Ugbo said the switching station has boosted transmission capacity of the country, adding that it will wheel all the power to the grid via the 330kv double circuit lines to Ugwuaji, New Haven and to Makurdi and Jos in the northcentral zone.

He said: ‘’The robust interventions of NDPHC management with strong support and assistance from both our Board Chairman, the Vice President and the Minister of Power, Works and Housing are reasons we have successfully tackled those issues to make the projects available now for inauguration and use by the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.’’

When completed, Ikot-Ekpene 330kV switching station and these lines will become a 2,400Mw evacuation facility addition to the grid, he said, adding that the completion level at the switching station has a 1,200Mw capability in place. The NIPP generating stations of Calabar and Alaoji with a combined installed capacity of over 1,100Mw are connected through this corridor to the grid, he added.

Ugbo said the switching station and the interconnecting lines have three benefits to the transmission networks in the country. These include increased reliability as other heavily loaded lines will be relieved and made more stable as more paths will be available for power in the face of contingencies; more exchanges between parties in the energy market will become possible due to availability of new transmission paths; and the lack of generation in the north will now be alleviated leading to a more equitable distribution of energy for the Nigerians.

NDPHC under the management recently signed Partial Risk Guarantee Pact between the Federal Government, World Bank and Seven Energy in Abuja to facilitate operation at its Calabar Power Station.

Fashola said all the power plants in the Eastern region have combined capacity of 1,846Mw comprising 561Mw Calabar, 450Mw in Alaoji, 185Mw Ibom power and 650Mw Afam VI, which were producing 100Mw each for the first three power plants mentioned and 300Mw for the Afam VI, all totalling 600Mw. With the inauguration of Ikot Ekpene Switching Station, there will be incremental output until full capacity is available to add an extra 1,246MW to the grid.

The minister commended the management of NDPHC who midwifed the project and the focused dedication of Ugbo and his team for this great success.

  • UNILAG set to open TV station

If it obtains the license,  University of Lagos (UNILAG) will make history as the first higher institution to operator a television station in Nigeria.

Officials of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) last week visited the institution’s Department of Mass Communication to inspect digital equipment acquired by the school to oprate the station.

The inspection process ended with the NBC officials expressing confidence in the department’s capacity to manage the television station.

Students practised a live recording in the studio to demonstrate the school readiness to begin operation.

Speaking, former Head of the department, Prof Ralph Akinfeleye, said the ambition to establish a television station by the department had been top of its agenda for many years.

He explained that a proposal for fund was forwarded to the World Bank to make the television station a reality. The proposal, according to him, was granted. This, he said, enabled the department to purchase needed equipment and facilities for the station.

The Acting HOD, Dr Abigael Ogwezzy-Ndisika, expressed optimism that the department would be licensed to operate the station.

She said: “The issue of licensing is concluded. From what we heard from the team that came to assess the facilities, it is obvious that the department stands out. Our students too are on top of their game. We are currently a UNESCO-rated centre of excellence, and we are working on moving to distinction. We have the first radio station in Nigeria and we are also being licensed for the first television station in the country.”

She praised Prof Ralph Akinfeleye for making great efforts in the licensing bid.
