  • OPC to Dokubo, others: stay away from Southwest

A pan-Yoruba group, the Oodua People’s Congress-Reformed (OPC-R), has warned ex-Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo and those planning to foment trouble during Saturday’s governorship and house of assembly elections to stay away from the Southwest in their own interest.

It also warned them to stop issuing inflammatory remarks and threats of attacks on the Yoruba.

Dokubo was widely reported in a section of the media a few days ago to have threatened to deal with the Yoruba in a video posted on Youtube, if non-indigenes were attacked during the polls.

In a statement issued by its President, Comrade Dare Adesope, the group said its men are prepared to protect Yoruba and their Igbo counterparts in Lagos State.

He said: ” Asari Dokubo and others should mind their choice of words while addressing Yoruba people because it is very clear that the Yoruba are not enjoying the privilege we give to the Igbo and other tribes in their land.

”The presidential election is over and we are looking forward to the governorship poll. We have decided to stand up to the task and protect our states by ensuring that the election is violence-free. Any group planning to disrupt the poll should have a rethink because OPC(R) is prepared to resist such act with our last blood.

”Heavy presence of our members would be adequately felt in all the polling booths across the Southwest.”

virtue of this , we are imploring all registered voters to come out and exercise their franchise without fear of attack from any quarters.

”And to all Igbo groups and persons threatening to attack Yorubas, I am sounding a strong warning that they should give it a second thought because we are very ready to defend our people. They should know that the gentility of a tiger is not  is not an act of cowardice.”

  • Stay away, National Park warns poachers

The National Parks Service Conservator-General (CG), Alhaji Goni Ibrahim, has advised Nigerians to avoid killing wild animals for “bush meats”.

Ibrahim said such action and  poaching contravened international agreement on protection of the wilds which Nigeria is a signatory.

Speaking on efforts of the agency, he explained that it is partnering other conservation organisations to ensure protection of the nation’s biodiversity.

He added that the park has raked some revenue for the federal government stressing that for that he 2018, the NPS made N32million.

Goni said the N32million is higher than N25 million recorded in 2017. “The revenue generated so far has been about 40 per cent increase over what we used to get, meaning that 2019 will be better. In actual monetary terms, from 1st January to 31st October, we have generated about N32 million as against N25 million in 2017,” he said.

The CG added that the Service would procure more vehicles and engage more personnel in 2019. “In 2019, we expect to increase our staff strength, acquire more patrol equipment and improve the welfare of our staff as well as increase our revenue generation.”

  • Stay away from politicians, GOC warns soldiers

The out-going General Officer Commanding (GOC) the 82 Division of Nigerian Army, Enugu, Major General Adamu Abubakar, has warned officers and soldiers in the command to stay away from politicians. He stated that soldiers don’t have any business being in politics.

Abubakar stated this while addressing officers and soldiers at the President Goodluck Jonathan’s Army Barracks, 14 Brigade Headquarters, Ohafia local government area of Abia State, during his farewell visit to the command.

According to Abubakar, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Y. Buratai frowns at seeing or hearing that soldiers who are supposed to be apolitical would leave their primary responsibilities and duties to get involved in politics, stressing that the same politicians that they dine and wine with would eventually leave and abandon them when they (soldiers) get into troubles.

“I must also warn you. The chief of army staff has always been talking about our soldiers being apolitical. You have no business being in politics. You have no business getting involved.

“The election period will soon be around. Some of these people will come around you and tell you all manner of stories.

“I will advice you not to listen to them, not to be close to them, not to be their friends because when the chips are down, you will be left alone with your family.”

Abubakar while commending the 14 Brigade officers for their professionalism in the line of duty, especially during the “Egwueke II” in the Southeast and Abia State in particular also commended the level of discipline among the officers and soldiers of the Brigade within the 20months of his stay as the GOC of 82 Division of the Nigerian Army.

“I must say that I am very satisfied with the level of discipline of all the officers and soldiers of 14 Brigade. We never had any case of the Brigade Commander referring any soldier or officer to the GOC for any offence and within the twenty months, no soldier of this brigade was sent to court marshal.

“That may be what is on the ground now, I want to encourage you to continue to keep it up. There is no army that survives without discipline and the discipline had to start with you, and then extend to your family and to the generality of the barrack.

“I want you to continue in the level that you are doing and even improve on it if you can. But if you cannot improve on it, then don’t go down, but remain where you are.”

The 82 Div. GOC who is now posted to the Nigerian Army Resource Center as a participant also used the opportunity of his last visit to the brigade to encourage the soldiers to embrace family planning and to ensure that they train and educate their children, noting that days were gone when children raised in the barracks are seeing as rascals. This is even as he also encouraged them to attend courses as at when due.

In his response, the Commanding Officer, 14 Brigade Ohafia, Major-General Abdul K. Ibrahim thanked the 82 Div. GOC for making out time to visit and the advice he gave to the soldiers, adding that he (Ibrahim) has learnt a lot under the tutelage of the GOC while he worked under him.

He promised that soldiers and officers of the 14 Brigade would continue to apply the lessons and teachings of the GOC in their Areas of Operation (AO) and promised to maintain the standard and give the same support to the incoming GOC.

High point of the visit was the inspection and commissioning of projects in the Brigade, some of which were named after him.

  • Stay away from Lagos, Akiolu warns vandals, kidnappers

Stay away from Lagos, Akiolu warns vandals, kidnappers

•Ambode: we’ll not tolerate such sacrilege again

•Lagos to confiscate buildings, hotels used for kidnapping

Lagos monarch Oba Riliwanu Aremu Akiolu yesterday warned vandals and kidnappers to stay away from the state, saying that the security apparatus has been fortified to wage war against every form of criminality.

Akiolu spoke when he led members of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs to the Lagos House, Ikeja, on a “Thank you” visit to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

He said: “It is in their (hoodlums) interest to desist and look for other legal ventures to make ends meets. The mere fact that the economy appears not okay does not mean that you resort to criminality. They should stop, not just kidnapping, but any form of criminality. No religion accepts such. Everybody is at alert now, we are on our toes now and with the encouragement given by the Chief of Naval Staff, the National Security Adviser and the Inspector-General of Police, they will be chased to anywhere they are,” he said.

He enjoined members of the council to rise to their responsibilities and take the business of security within their communities seriously.

He said the incident which led to the kidnap of the Oniba of Iba, Oba Goriola Oseni, on July 16, was a wake-up call to all, noting that the business of protecting lives and property should not be left to the security agencies alone.

Akiolu said: “Honestly, as I told my brother Obas, all of us will have to go back and rearrange our security architecture. All hands must be on deck, everyone must assist the government. That’s why in my palace, people accuse me of being too security conscious, but I told them that well, maybe because I was a policeman, but it’s God that is the ultimate security of our lives.

“It is very necessary. We are happy because the governor did very well. All the security agencies did all that they could do but we still have to be at alert. Everybody must be prepared. We are not going to take things for granted now.”

He lauded the governor’s and the security agencies’ efforts in rescuing the Iba monarch.

Responding, Ambode said the state government deployed its security intelligence to unravel the circumstances surrounding the monarch’s kidnap.

The governor said: ‘’At the initial stage, when the Oba was kidnapped, it appeared as if government was not doing anything. That was actually not the case. It was not just a sacrilege in Yorubaland, but the traditional institution was indeed desecrated. So, we needed to dig into what really happened to reach a logical conclusion.”

Ambode assured the monarchs that such incident would never occur in the state again.

“We will now pay greater attention collectively to the security of our traditional rulers. We need to increase security especially for those rulers in the riverine areas. Whatever it is that the Council of Obas must do, must be done to strengthen the security in that area, but there must be cohesion and unity amongst us.

“Anything that will bring about  peace and make the state progress is our priority and the security of lives and property has always been the priority of this government,” the governor said.

Also yesterday, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Fatai Owoseni threatened to confiscate houses and hotels used as hideouts for kidnapping and other criminal activities in the state.

Addressing reporters after the State Security Council meeting presided over by Ambode, Owoseni said: “There is no hiding place for criminal elements again as we get them, they would be made to face the full wrath of the law. In addition to that, the Council resolved that any structure or any places of hiding that criminal elements are using, the state will not hesitate to take over those safe havens, structures or houses,” he said.

Owoseni also advised criminals  to turn over a new leaf and get themselves meaningfully engaged, warning that ‘’there is no hiding place for them in the state’’.

Dickson to civil servants: stay away from politics

Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson has warned civil servants against partisan politics ahead of the December 5 governorship election in the state.

Dickson spoke at the weekend in Government House, Yenagoa, while inaugurating a newly appointed Head of Service of the State, Dr. Peter Singabele, and member of the state Civil Service Commission, Dr. Boumkuma Kpokiri.

He said civil servants must uphold the principles of neutrality and loyalty to government in power.

He charged Singabale to further depoliticise and instill more discipline in the state civil service to achieve improved service delivery.

He said engaging in politics was against the ethics of professional civil service and negatively impact on efficiency and effectiveness in the public service.

Describing the public service as the most important sector in service delivery in a government, Dickson said he would not allow political considerations to determine the occupant of head of the state civil service office.

Dickson said: “For the past one year, no state government can boast of any effective construction work because we are in a state of recession.

“But despite of all that, we are not owing salaries of members of the public service in this state.

“We do not also owe their pension entitlements. The only thing that is left for us to handle is the gratuity that has accumulated for the past ten years, which is not a creation of this government. But we are determined to finding a solution to address it.”

He paid tribute to the out gone Head of Service, Dr. Josephine Igodo, for her efforts in fostering cordial relationship between the government and the workforce.

He promised to organise a state banquet in her honour at an appropriate date to fulfill the tradition already set by the present administration.

Dickson urged Singabele and Kpokiri, who replaces late Sir Patrick Tekenah, to apply their wealth of experiences in performing their duties.

Addressing them, he said: “You are appointed to lead the public service, which is the most important group as far as service delivery is concerned. It is our expectation that you are going to depoliticise the civil service.

“We don’t want to play politics with the civil service. When we came on board, I promised a civil service that would not be politicised.

“And that is exactly what we are doing. The permanent secretaries that have been appointed know that none of them lobbied.

“There was no political influence or interference whatsoever. It was strictly in accordance with our judgment in terms of merit, hard work and capacity for improved service delivery.

“And that is the civil service that we want to leave behind for succeeding generations of this state.”

  • Stay away from politicians, Ajimobi warns civil servants

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has warned newly-recruited administrative officers and social welfare officers against hobnobbing with politicians.

He said anybody who does so would be shown the way out of the Civil Service.

The governor spoke in Ibadan, the state capital, on Tuesday during the three-day induction course for the new employees.

He said they should be apolitical in all their dealings.

The employees comprise 40 administrative officers and 18 welfare officers. They include fresh graduates and eight civil servants, who passed the examination for administrative officers.

Ajimobi, who was represented by the Head of Service, Alhaji Tajudeen Aremu, said the civil service is a call to serve one’s fatherland.

He said: “The civil service is not a place for those with the `get-rich-quick syndrome’. So if you are looking for undue riches, this is not an ideal place for you. But if what you want to make maximum impact in life through selfless service, you are welcome on board.

“I believe in the saying of a wise man that `Life is in phases, but men are in sizes’. If you pattern your life along this philosophy, you will realise your potentials in the civil service.”

The governor said the government would soon recruit 120 fresh graduates as education officers.
