  • Monarch to Christians:be steadfast

A monarch in Ekiti State Evangelist Olugbenga Adetiloye has urged Christians to be steadfast in the midst of persecution and pains, stressing there would be great reward from God.

The Olugbole of Igbole-Ekiti spoke at the 10th year Anniversary of Face of God Evangelical Ministry (FOGEM) at Odole Street Ile-Oluji, Ondo State with the theme “Sudden Good Change”.

Oba Adetiloye said a Christian without excellent spirit cannot foster sudden positive change that would lead to better transformation.

He noted it was the excellent spirit upon Joseph in a strange land  that paved way for Joseph to be made a prime Minister.

According to him: “An excellent spirit like righteousness that produces it, does not always pay quickly but it does eventually and when it does finally pay, it more than makes up for seeming sluggishness.

‘An excellent spirit is built by habitual life of doing things well, it is a life of doing things big or little, strategic or inconsequential, publicly or privately in a way it should be done”.

General Overseer of the church Prophet Samuel Omoniyi described the journey so far as hectic but appreciated God for the success recorded in the past 10 years.

According to him, he was not interested initially in answering the call of God but caved in escape the wrath of God, stressing His faithfulness had been sustaining the ministry.

Chairman of the occasion, Oluwasijibomi Akindiose, a member of Ondo State House of Assembly, urged Christian to put their trust in God.

He charged them not to be deterred even when things look impossible but learn to praise God always.

Women have been charged to remain firm and steadfast as regards their belief and commitment to things of God.

This was the message by the wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Her Excellency, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, at the Regional Women Conference of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Region 19, which was held yesterday at RCCG Dominion Sanctuary, Acme, Ogba, Lagos.

Ambode who was speaking on the theme of the conference, Occupy till I come, pointed out that the charge demand of us that we remain holy and godly in all our ways and in all things. “In other words, we must live as outstanding Christians and as vessels of blessings to retrieve the lost. All that we do must glorify God: our behaviour, dressing, public conduct, and our relationship with others. In other words, our lives should be a model for others beginning from our home,” the first lady said.

According to her, “the theme also implied that ‘we should love our husbands and children, thereby acting as a stabilising factor in the family. It is mandatory that we raise our children in the knowledge and fear of the Almighty.”

Speaking further, the first lady pointed out that “it is important that women are economically empowered, as this will enable them focus on and be committed to their most cherished ideals, thereby making them better Christians.”

Earlier in her welcome address, the convener of the conference and wife of Pastor-In-Charge of Region 19 and Special Assistant to the General  Overseer, (WPICR/SATGO), Pastor Mrs. Helen Oyitso, explained that women must engage themselves in the activity of the master. “Most brethren have placed their interest and desire over and above the service of the master. Struggle for position and titles have kept soldiers bound, not to talk about the pursuits of earthly riches,” she stated.

  • Emmanuel’s wife advises women to be steadfast

The Banquet Hall of Government House, Uyo was   filled to capacity as Akwa-Ibom State women converged for their monthly prayer meeting. The prayers meant to intercede for a better Akwa-Ibom State had the theme “Breaking the Barriers.”

Addressing the women at the event, the wife of the Governor, Mrs. Martha Udom Emmanuel appreciated God for His continued benevolence on the state, saying “today is a day of joy; a day of celebration. God has never disappointed His children and He will not. When He opens the door, no man can shut it, all barriers, hindrances and obstacles in our lives and that of the state have been broken.”

Mrs. Emmanuel further urged the women not to depend on their strength for victory, saying they should put on the armour of God. She added that if they had depended on their strength and might, they would have failed in their endeavours. She said God being the Supreme Being, knows everything about us and he expects us to submit and yield to Him. Mrs Emmanuel also said that Akwa-Ibom State has been consecrated by God for good and as such, no man can hinder her progress.

The Governor’s wife called on the women to desist from making unguarded statements that could affect the unity of the state, saying any person that fails to repent may have herself to blame because the Governor is determined to unite and build a prosperous state for all. Mrs. Emmanuel informed the women that from the month of November, she will embark on tour oflocal government areas with the aim to interact and empower women.

She also called on the women to take advantage of government’s free medical programmes, stating that soon screening centres for breast and cervical cancer will be established in all the federal constituencies in the state to help women detect and manage themselves well.

In her exhortation earlier, Rev. Mercy Ugbah advised the women to chart a new course for their lives. Reading from Exodus 14:8, Rev. Ugbah said every hindrance and obstacles that could have impeded the progress of the state have been broken, stressing that the same God of yesterday is still alive and doing wonders.

Remain steadfast, ACN, Boroffice urge supporters

The defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Ondo State yesterday said it was disappointed by the Supreme Court judgment, which declared Dr. Olusegun Mimiko winner of last October’s governorship election.

It urged the people not to despair, but remain focused on their quest for good governance.

In a statement by its former Publicity Secretary, Mr. Rotimi Agbede, the defunct ACN said: “It is unfortunate that the apex court dashed the expectations of the people, who hoped to wriggle out of the maladministration of the Labour Party (LP) government and its attendant pain, poverty and frustration.

“With the avalanche of incontrovertible oral and documentary evidence pointing to a compromised and discredited election, we are at a loss as to why the highest court sacrificed justice on the altar of legal inconsequentialities.

“This verdict is a judicial murder of justice, which is capable of eroding the people’s confidence in the judicial and electoral system. While we are not perturbed by this glaring injustice as we are more than resolute to engender good governance, we are concerned about the fate of the people, who are the main victims of this grievous decision, as they would have to wander through the wilderness of the LP administration’s recklessness for the next three years.”

The defunct party hailed its candidate in the election, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN); his running mate, Dr. Paul Akintelure; and its legal team for their “courage, doggedness and forthrightness” throughout the legal battle.

It urged its members to continue to pursue their goal on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

A chieftain of the APC, Senator Ajayi Boroffice (Ondo North District), urged the people to accept the Supreme Court judgment.

He regretted that residents would have to wait for a long time to get “the change they desire”.

Boroffice said: “Leaders of our party, professionals and the people fought a good fight as gallant soldiers of progress. They spoke against policies that would not allow development in their communities.

“They demanded character in leadership and agitated for good governance and rapid industrial development. They wanted jobs and economic prosperity for our people. These were their demands.

“I salute the stoic courage of Akeredolu and his legal team. You have not lost; you have only set an agenda for the new phase of activities in our great party.

“This judgment might have dampened our spirit, but it has not weakened our determination to rescue our state from the clutches of poverty, mass unemployment, corruption, mismanagement of our resources and a wasteful administration.

“We hoped for light but behold obscurity, but we will not relent until we rescue Ondo from vandals and transform it into a state that is economically viable, politically stable and socially secure.

“Let us remain focused in our resolve to produce a progressive government, which will guarantee good governance, democratic institutions, justice, equity and opportunities for our people.”

Boroffice said the people would continue to insist on free and fair elections.

A member of Akeredolu’s legal team, Mr. Victor Olatoyegun, urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar, to prosecute the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials responsible for the “illegal injection” of over 100,000 names into the voters’ register used for the election.

He said the “illegal injection” was a novel way of rigging by “compromised” INEC officials and was significant enough to guarantee Mimiko’s victory.

Olatoyegun said: “The Election Petition Tribunal, Appeal and Supreme courts consistently admitted that there were illegal injections of names into the voters’ register.

“But unfortunately, none of the courts had the temerity to annul the election conducted with it, especially when it was obvious that the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2011, were flouted.

“If, indeed, it is impossible to put something on nothing, then it stands to reason that no valid election can come out of the compromised voters’ register.”

The lawyer said the judiciary should be the last hope of the common man and rule against illegalities, without minding whose ox is gored.

He said: “We have heard of phrases like ‘my hands are tight, twelve-two third of 19 states’ before. The recent decision has brought to our judicial page other lexicons, now known as ‘illegal injection into the voters’ registers’ and the petitioner’s need to prove its ‘substantiality’ to invalidate an election.

“The apex court was expected to break the jinx by pronouncing the election conducted with an illegal register null and void, but its decision fell short of the people’s expectation of getting real justice.

“There is still hope for the common man, because the primordial sentiments of a judge are not representative of the general feeling in the legal community.

“It is a crime to unlawfully obliterate, alter or inject names into the voters’ register in the absence of a lawful review of the register. It is against this backdrop that the right of the citizenry to know the perpetrators of this illegal injection of names into the 2012 voters’ register used for the Ondo State governorship election becomes sacrosanct.”

  • Remain steadfast, group urges Ugolor

The Conference of Non-Government Organisations (CONGOs) in Edo State has assured an environmentalist, Rev. David Ugolor, of their continued support.

Ugolor was arrested and detained in prisons custody for alleged involvement in the murder of Mr. Olaitan Oyerinde, the former Principal Secretary to Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

He was later released on bail.

CONGOs urged him not to see the recent happenings as a setback, but a catalyst for him and his organisation, the Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), to continue to speak for the downtrodden.

During a visit of CONGOs officials to Ugolor yesterday, the group’s President, Comrade Jude Obasanmi, said: “Permit me to make a little retrospection on the recent happenings in which the integrity of active Civil Society practitioners was put to litmus test.

“No doubt, your 41 days’ incarceration has proved to all that we have a long way to go in the quest to have a just and egalitarian society.”

Assuring Ugolor of CONGOs’ support, Obasanmi appealed for the incorporation of the group in ANEEJ’s local and international activities.

Thanking them for their support, Ugolor said: “Your action/demonstration on the streets with other groups is the first in our recent history as a nation.

“They sent the right signal to the agents of state terror and the public that you cannot just frame up an innocent man and get away with it. “Those who wield lethal weapons purchased for them by tax payers’ money should not turn the weapons against the innocent tax payers.”

He urged CONGOs to see his travail as a call to greater duty, adding that many innocent people were languishing in prisons for offences they knew nothing about.

Ugolor urged CONGOs’ leadership to come up with a proposal that would reposition civil Society groups for greater service to humanity.

CONGOs is a coalition of over 80 organisations
