  • Two men get seven months for stealing phone

    A Jos Upper Area Court, Plateau State, yesterday sentenced two men, Salim Hassan and Yakubu Ibrahim to seven months imprisonment each for stealing a phone worth N45, 000.

    The judge, Mrs. Comfort Pam, sentenced the duo after they pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of stealing and conspiracy.

    Pam, however, gave the convicts an option to pay N 7,000 as fine or serve a sentence of three months each for the offence of stealing.

    For the offence of conspiracy, the judge gave the convicts an option to pay N6, 000 as fine or serve a jail term of seven months each.

    Prosecuting Inspector Labaran Ahmed had told the court that the case was reported on April 13 by Ayliu Haruna of the State House, Abuja.

    He alleged that the defendants stole the phone when the complainant’s vehicle developed a fault by the roadside.

    Ahmed said with the help of passersby, the defendants were caught and the phone recovered from them.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 59 of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria.

  • Convict jailed two months for stealing phone

    A Karmo Grade I Area Court yesterday sentenced a 32-year-old man, Mohammed Yakubu, to two months in prison for stealing a phone valued at N 45,000 in a bank.

    The judge, Alhaji Inuwa Maiwada, however, gave the convict an option to pay N3,000 fine and advised him to be of good behaviour.

    The convict, who lives in Gwagwalada Park Area 1, Abuja, was arraigned, tried and convicted after he pleaded guilty to a count charge of theft.

    Prosecutor Ukagha Ijeoma had told the court that Aguodi Michael of United Bank for Africa (UBA), Utako, Abuja, on November 8, reported the matter at Utako Police Station.

    She said the convict, while inside the bank at 32, Ekukam Street, Utako, stole a phone belonging to Michael.

    Ijeoma said during investigation, the convict confessed to the crime.

    The offence, she said, contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code.

  • Two arraigned for stealing phone, recharge cards

    Two men, Oribamise Sunday, 26 and Kayode Abayomi, 26, have appeared at an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State for allegedly stealing and receiving phone.

    Prosecutor Johnson Okunade said the accused, whose addresses were not given, committed the offence on January 15, about 1600hrs, in Oke Bola, Ado-Ekiti.

    He said Oribamise stole Infinix Hot 5 Lite, valued at N46,000, MTN, Glo and Airtel recharge cards, valued at N40,000 and N86,000, totalling N172,000, property of Mr. Ojo Michael.

    Okunade said the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap. 16 Vol. 1 Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    He alleged Abayomi unlawfully received the phone from Oribamise, knowing it was stolen.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 427 of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    He asked the court for an adjournment, to enable him study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty.

    Their lawyer, Mr. Yemi Adebayo, urged the court to grant the accused bail, promising they will not jump bail.

    Chief Magistrate Adesoji Adegboye granted each of the accused bail at N100,000 with one surety.

    He adjourned the case till June 13 for hearing.

  • Court jails two for stealing phone

    A Masaka Upper Area Court in Nasarawa State yesterday sentenced two men to 16 months’ imprisonment each for stealing phone.

    The convicts are Michael Onazi, 26 and Joseph Ali, 28.

    The convicts, who live at Angwan Police area, Masaka, had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy and theft, but begged the judge for mercy.

    “We are sorry, please forgive us. We promise not to repeat such act again,” Onazi said.

    The Judge, Mr. Yakubu Ishaku, sentenced the men, but gave each of them an option of fine of N13, 000.

    He said the punishment would act as a deterrent to others.

    Ishaku ordered the convicts to pay compensation of N65, 000 to the nominal complainant and N20, 000 as expenses incurred during the prosecution.

    He ordered that the money be paid within two weeks, saying in default of payment, the convicts would spend additional one year in prison.

    The prosecutor, Mr. Frank Swem, had told the court that the accused committed the offences on November 22 at Masaka.

    He said Usman Awudi, the accused’s co-tenant, reported the matter at the Divisional Police Headquarters, Masaka.

    Swem said on the same day, about 10am, the complainant gave his daughter, Karlija, his phone to charge at their neighbour’s shop.

    He said Onazi overheard Awudi sending his daughter on the errand and alerted Ali, who snatched the phone from the girl and sold it.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened sections 97 and 288 of the Penal Code.
