    Two men docked for allegedly stealing truck worth N10m

    Two men were on Wednesday docked in a Magistrates’ Court in Agbowa, Lagos State for allegedly stealing a truck worth N10million.

    The police charged Wale Bakare, 30 and Sani Abdulahi, 35 with six counts of conspiracy, theft, felony to wit false information, forgery and providing false information.

    The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The prosecutor, ASP Ajaebitimi Elijah, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on Sept.22 at about 6:45 a.m. at Imota community of Ikorodu.

    The prosecutor said that Bakare conspired with others at large to steal an ”ADEL” truck worth N10 million, property of Mr Adeniyi Sanyaolu.

    Elijah said Bakare gave false information to the police on duty by telling them that he was attacked by unknown youths who demanded money while trying to fix his faulty truck in Imota knowing same to be false.

    He said that Bakare forged the documents, an affidavit claiming the ownership of the truck with intent to sell the truck knowing same to be forged documents.

    The prosecutor added that Abdulahi Sani dishonestly received the truck knowing it was stolen.

    According to the prosecutor, the offence contravenes the provisions of sections 411, 287, 96, 365(h), 33(1)(2)(4) and 94 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Magistrate, Mrs C. K. Tunji-Careena, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N500,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

    Tunji-Careena adjourned the case until Nov. 2 for mention.

    Man jailed 16 weeks for stealing two iPhones

    A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Tuesday sentenced a man, Rabiu Yusuf, to 16 weeks imprisonment for stealing two iPhones worth N678,000.

    The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, held that the convict failed to give the court a reasonable explanation why he committed the crime.

    Emmanuel charged the convict to desist from any criminal act or face a more stringent punishment if found wanting in future.

    The convict, who resides in Ali Akilu Road, Kaduna, was convicted of criminal conspiracy and theft and he pleaded guilty.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo informed the court that the defendant committed the offence with two other persons, at large at Kurmin Marshi Kaduna.

    Leo said that the defendant stole two iPhones all valued at N678,000 from the shop of the complainant, Zainab Salisu.

    He said that the defendant and his accomplices came to the shop under the pretense of buying clothing materials and stole the two iPhones while they were kept to be charged.

    “It was later discovered through a CCTV camera that it was the defendant who stole the phones,” the prosecutor said.

    He added that the phones were traced and the defendant was arrested at his resident with the said stolen phones.

    Leo said the offence contravened the provisions of Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.

  • Two drivers nabbed for stealing boss’ car in Anambra

    Two drivers have been arrested by the police for allegedly stealing a car belonging to their boss in Onitsha, Anambra state.

    The suspects, Ifeanyi Jude and Okwudili Okoli were said to be drivers attached to a monarch in the commercial city of the state.

    The Nation gathered that the suspects conspired to steal the car where it was parked in the monarch’s residence.

    Confirming the incident, police spokesperson, Haruna Mohammed said the arrests were made by police detectives attached to Central Police Station Onitsha in collaboration with Federal Highway Patrol team attached to Enugu State Police Command.

    He said the case was being investigated.

    He said: “The suspects conspired with one Okwudili Okoli, 30, and stolen a Toyota Corolla car with Registration Number HRH -01-NEN belonging to His Royal Highness, Igwe of Adazi Ani Community, Robert Nwankwo in his compound at No.1 Niger Drive GRA Onitsha.

    “The suspects who are drivers attached to the Igwe (monarch) initially are denied having any knowledge of such incident when the vehicle was stolen until the principal suspect Ifeanyi Jude was intercepted with the vehicle along Nsukka road Enugu State before he confessed and also indicted his accomplice.”

    Mohammed added: “Consequently, following Intelligence report, a Lexus ES 300 car with registration number ENU 654 NX stolen from one Okafor Cyril Chima of No.4 Oforma Street, Enugu, was also recovered at No.5 Achalla Street Nkpor by detectives attached to Ogidi Police Division.

  • Stealing, breach of peace top offences in Lagos

    Stealing and breach of peace topped the list of most committed criminal offences in Lagos State between January and March this year, the Lagos Criminal Information System (LCIS) has revealed.

    According to the report, the two accounted for 65 per cent of offences committed within the period reviewed; others accounted for 35 per cent.

    Out of the 17,941 prison inmates  enrolled on the LCIS as at March, the report showed that 1,038 were in prisons for stealing and 776 for breach of peace.

    For the remaining 35 per cent, 158 are for cultism and unlawful society offences, 108 for assault, 90 for robbery,  83 for murder, 80 for armed robbery, 75 for obtaining under false pretence, 57 for fraud, 53 for damage of property, 48 for defilement, 43 for illegal possession of firearms,  39 for drug trafficking, 25 for accident, 24 for illegal tampering, 22 for breaking and entering, 17 for kidnapping,  13 for sexual assault, 12 for forgery, 11 for rape, nine for abduction, eight for illegal possession of drugs and seven each for money laundering and manslaughter.

    Male offenders accounted for 98 per cent and female offenders with two per cent of the total prison inmates of 17,941.

    A total of 1,266 offenders are within the age of 18 and 25, 1,337 are within 26 and 40 years, 375 are within 41 and 55 years, 73 are within 56 and 65 years, 19 are within 15 and 17 years while 17 are 66 and 76 years of age.

    The 17 juvenile inmates enrolled for the period January and March marked an improvement over 66 juveniles enrolled for the previous quarter, October to December, 2018.

    Defilement of children under the age of 18 is top on the table for sexual related offences with 68 per cent and followed by sexual assault and rape with 17 and 15 per cent respectively.

    Top five locations where inmates committed offences in Lagos are Eti-Osa  with 218 inmates, Apapa with 170 inmates, Alimosho has 169 inmates,  Ojo has 155 inmates and Ikorodu with 142 inmates while the least five are Ifako-Ijaiye 20 inmates, Bariga 22 inmates, Epe 40 inmates, Ikoyi/Obalende 44 inmates and Ajeromi with 53 inmates.

    The top five states that have indigenes in the five federal prisons in Lagos are Ogun with 442 inmates, Oyo 359 inmates, Lagos 276 inmates Osun 208 and Kwara with 194 inmates while the states with the least number of inmates include Taraba, with six, Gombe with seven, Niger has nine, while Rivers and Zamfara states have 10 inmates respectively.

    Actual prison inmates in the five prisons as at the time of the report was put at 9,044 compared to total prisons capacity of 4,087. The breakdown showed that Ikoyi has 2,976 as against prison capacity of 800; Kirikiri Medium prison has 3,925 as compared to its built-in capacity of 1,700; Maximum Prison has 1,645 as against capacity of 1,056; Badagry has 298 inmates as against its capacity of 320 while the female prison has 200, eleven less than its built-in capacity for 211.

    The status of the inmates showed that 2,359 are awaiting trials, 61 are on remand, 117 are convicted, 18 are condemned, 80 have been released on bail, 235 have had their cases struck out.

    The Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) issued 382 legal advice, representing 94 per cent of total 408 case files received; 20 case files, representing five per cent, are pending while six case files, representing one per cent are returned for further investigation.

    The breakdown of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) advice issued showed that 131 were issued for sexual related offences, 99 for robbery, 81 for stealing, 41 for homicide and 30 for fatal motor accident.

    The report showed that 40 of the awaiting trial inmates have spent between one to nine years in prison without being taken to court.

    Fifty-four of the awaiting trial inmates have been unable to perfect their bail, with 34 of them having a bail sum of between N5,000 and N10,000.

    Meanwhile, 56 per cent of the inmates do not have legal representation, 98 per cent are not sure of the status of their DPP advice while only two per cent are with DPP advice.

     

     

  • Five charged with stealing mistress’ N105m gold

    Five domestic workers have been arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly breaking into their employer’s room and stealing jewellery valued at N105 million.

    Segun Akintola, 49, Tomisin Alade, 28, Felicia Musa, 23, Amaka Irozuru, 38 and Zakara Yau, 38 are awaiting four-count charge of conspiracy, housebreaking, stealing and possession of stolen items.

    Prosecuting Inspector Raphael Donny said the defendants conspired and broke into the bedroom of Mrs. Oluyemisi Wada, who travelled abroad, to steal the jewellery.

    He said the defendants committed the offence with others at large on November 23, 2018 at 9pm, on Banana Island, Ikoyi, Lagos.

    They pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate B. O. Osunsemi granted the defendants N500,000 bail with two sureties each in the like sum.

    She said the sureties must be employed with evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government. Their addresses will be verified by the court.

    Osunsemi said the sureties must be relations of the defendants and live within the court’s jurisdiction.

    The magistrate also ordered that the defendants should be remanded in Kirikiri Prisons pending when the bail conditions are met.

    The case continues on March 11.

     

     

     

     

  • Police parade fake officer, 213 suspects

    The Akwa Ibom state police command has paraded a fake police officer of the rank of assistant commissioner of police ACP) and 213 other suspects for various crimes.

    The state police commissioner, Musa Kimo who paraded the suspects before journalists on Thursday at the command’s headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia, listed their crimes as murder, Kidnapping, child stealing, defilement, stealing, armed Robbery among others.

    Kimo later in a press briefing said the fake police officer identified as Kingsley Udoyen of No.3 stadium road, in Abak council area of the state, had defrauded and threatened unsuspecting members of the public.

    The CP mentioned that one English pistol without magazine and ammunition, portraits of chief superintendent of police and Assistant Commissioner of police, three pairs of uniform, police belt, fake police identity cards as well as other documents were recovered from the suspect.

    When interrogated by journalists, the fake police officer said,”It started when I lost my job. I was with the police in Alagbon as a superintendent of police. I was dismissed in 2007 because of the illegal job I went for. I left Lagos in 2008 and went to Calabar where I met Glory Etim, my girlfriend.

    “She is the one who bought all these police uniforms for me, she is a serving officer and works with the Police Secondary School.

    I am a car dealer and I go to Cotonou. Since I was dismissed, I don’t have a job. I am 56 years old from Mbiaobong Ikot Etefia in Ikono and I am married with four children. I know what I am doing is against the law”, he lamented.

    The Commissioner of police further disclosed that one Joseph Effiong from Ikono local government area who worked as a security man at Royal City Central Chapel, Uyo was arrested for allegedly luring one little Miss Mfoniso Nse Okon to an uncompleted building and defiled her.

    He said another suspect one Joseph Sunday Essien was apprehended by his men for defiling his 13-year-old stepdaughter, Miss Patience Eden.

    Kimo also confirmed the arrest of two self-confessed cultists of Red Skin Confraternity, Okon Asuquo and Iboro Edet Etim , who allegedly robbed one Josephine Nkweke in her provision shop at Ekpene Ukim early this month.

    He said that eight other cultists who were confirmed members of Iceland confraternity have been arrested for armed robbery.

    The commissioner of police warned the people to desist from crime as the 2019 general election was fast approaching.

  • Man gets five years for house-breaking, stealing

    An Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court at the weekend sentenced a 24-year-old man, Adewale Wasiu, to five years’ imprisonment for house-breaking and stealing.

    Magistrate Mrs. Modupe Afeniforo sentenced the convict as he pleaded guilty, but gave him N50,000 option of fine.

    The convict, whose address was not provided, is facing charges of house-breaking and stealing.

    Prosecuting Inspector Oriyomi Akinwale had told the court that the convict and others at large committed the offences on January16 at about 11am at Egbewa, Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.

    He alleged that the convict and others at large broke into the house of Mrs. Felicia Funke.

    Akinwale said the convict and others at large, stole a plasma 32 inches television valued at N75,000 and plumbing materials worth N100,000, belonging to the complainant.

    He said the offences contravened sections 412 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    The prosecutor furnished the court with the fact of the case, saying the convict confessed to the crime.

    He told the court that the convict came from Lagos to Ikere-Ekiti for a funeral with his friends, and they told him to accompany them to somewhere.

    Akinwale said when they got to the house, they broke the burglary proof and entered the house, where they stole the television.

    He said they sold the television for N25,000, but the convict was given N6,000 as his own share.

    The prosecutor added that the following day, they went back to the house and stole a generator. In the process, they were caught, two fled, while he was apprehended by the police.

    Akinwale said efforts by the police to locate the buyer of the television and others at large proved abortive.

  • Teenager caught stealing woman’s underwear

    A teenager has been arrested for allegedly stealing a pair of female underwear in Odoakpu, Onitsha, Anambra State.

    The suspect, Chinonye Okorie, 19, of Mbaitolu in Imo State was apprehended with the pant by the police.

    Parading the suspect yesterday at the police headquarters in Amawbia, spokesman Haruna Mohammed said the suspect stole the underwear for alleged ritual.

    He said: “At about 6:48am, detectives attached to the Central Police Station (CPS), Onitsha arrested Chinonye Okorie, male, aged 19, of Ogbaku in Mbaitolu Local Government Area of Imo State.

    “The suspect allegedly stole a female pant washed and spread on a rope at 21, Umuna Street, Odoakpu, Onitsha in Anambra State.

    “He intended to sell the pant to-yet-to-be-identified persons at the rate of N80,000 for alleged ritual.”

    Mohammed added that the pant was recovered from the suspect as exhibit.

    He said efforts were on to arrest fleeing accomplices.

    “The command implores the public to be vigilant and report to the nearest police station any suspicious person or persons roaming their vicinity for prompt action, in order to prevent this new trend of crime in the society,” Mohammed added.

  • Man charged with stealing starch

    A 39-year-old man, Samuel Egbe, who allegedly stole wine and spray starch  from a supermarket, on Monday appeared before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State.

    Egbe, who lives on Aminu Street, Ketu, Lagos, is facing a count charge of stealing, but he pleaded not guilty.

    According to the Prosecutor, Insp. Lucky Ihiehie, the accused stole two bottles of wine and two bottles of spray starch from a supermarket belonging to one Mr Tochukwu Okafor.

    Ihiehie said that the accused committed the theft on Nov. 7, at 10.30p.m at No. 455, Ikorodu Road, Ketu, adding that the items worth N17, 900.

    “The accused came to the supermarket, pretended to window shop but stole a bottle of black label wine worth N7,000 on Nov. 3

    “Two days after, the accused came again, pretending to buy something in the supermarket and stole a bottle of Jack Daniels wine worth N7,500.

    “Since that day, he was being monitored until Nov. 7 when he came again and stole two spray starch valued at N3, 400, and was apprehended,” he submitted.

    Stealing contravenes Sections 287 and of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The offence is punishable with seven years’ jail term.

    The Magistrate, Mrs E. Kubeinje granted bail to the accused in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum, and adjourned the case until Dec. 19, for mention

  • Court jails driver one year for stealing auto parts

    A Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court yesterday sentenced a 23-year-old driver, Lukman Babalola, to one year in prison for stealing vehicle parts worth  N135,000.

    The theft occurred at the police accidental vehicle garage at Yaba, Lagos Mainland.

    Chief Magistrate Oluwatoyin Oghere sentenced Babalola after he pleaded guilty and begged for leniency.

    Oghere, who gave the convict a N100,000 fine option, said the sentence would deter to others.

    She noted that theft cases were increasing.

    Oghere advised the convict to be of good behaviour.

    Babalola, of no fixed address, was arraigned on October 29 on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    Prosecutor Modupe Olaluwoye told the court that the convict on October 14, at about 4am, broke into the police accidental vehicle garage on Herbert Macaulay Way, Sabo, Yaba, Lagos.

    Olaluwoye said Babalola confessed to have stolen a Faragon Volkswagen engine valued at N120,000 and a tyre worth N15,000

    The offence contravenes sections 280 (1) and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
