    Travails of Stella Oduah

Greed is thy other name PDP. The arraignment of former Minister of Aviation, Senator Stella Oduah by the federal government over an alleged  N5bn fraud committed in 2014 is a sad reminder of PDP years of the locust when vicious  battle over ‘sharing’ of our resources often subtly termed  ‘family quarrel’ threatened the very survival of the nation.

Of course, greed over control of resources of a nation is not limited to the ruling class in Nigeria. It is the reason for climate change denial by owners of society in the US despite overwhelming scientific evidence just as it is the source of social dislocations and chaos in Europe.

Indeed, greed is what sets aside the less than 4% that control the resources of the world from the 96% of humanity who, because of their daily struggle for survival, have questioned claim of some social crusaders who insist ‘we are not the savage, irredeemably greedy, violent and rapacious species we can be led into thinking ourselves to be”. (Stephen Fry on Rutger Bregman’s Humankind: A Hopeful History.

For many troubled by prospect of our country’s possible  descent into a one party  state because of the current mass movement to the ruling All Progressive Party (APC), the question is what such return portends for the country without expression of remorse even as their renewed greed-driven battle took them straight from their Ibadan controversial convention centre to their Abuja Wadata headquarters, where the two factions and their thugs had to be driven out by police with Kabiru Taimu Turaki-led faction emerging from Obasanjo’s library  rendezvous in Abeokuta last  Saturday.

But before PDP’s unpredictable fathers and troubled children often described as ‘new-breed politicians’ that breed nothing but corruption, let us first examine the travails of Princess Stella Oduah and the alleged N5b fraud, which will be not a fraction of what she must have spent on her well-advertised philanthropic activities.

Oduah was before her ministerial appointment, we were told, was a pacesetter who had spent about 25 years in the oil and gas industry, before  resigning in1992 from the services of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to found her ‘Sea Petroleum and Gas Company’ she had nurtured to a multi-billion naira company.

She was a multi-award winner, starting with the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), from President Obasanjo, Distinguished Catholic Professional, Dame International among others. She was an avowed philanthropist who through her JOE life Foundation “launched the Farmers Loan Scheme for peasant and subsistent farmers in Ogbaru LGA of Anambra,  constructed a 19-bed medical centre in Orhionwon LGA in Edo State, weekly feeding of the poor, potable water project at Ogbaru Local Government Area, annual scholarship scheme for 36 indigenes of Ogbaru from primary to university level;  annual award for the Best Female Petroleum Engineering graduating student and  building of an ultra-modern secondary school at Akili, Ogbaru local Govt. Area, Anambra State.

Oduah believes that “wealth acquisition is a God-given grace and not necessarily an act of human ingenuity, and that wealth acquisition makes sense only if it is spread to affect the lives of the less privileged around you”.

When you imagine the princess did all the above before joining Abuja seat of power where politicians struggle  for their constituents’ share of the national cake is to understand why her people immediately rewarded her with a senatorial ticket the moment the scandal first broke out  during Jonathan presidency.

Now let us examine the baleful legacies of PDP and its pathfinders:

First, PDP was never a political party, John Campbell, a former US envoy to Nigeria had during a proceeding at the hearing on the topic: Nigeria in Turmoil in the British House of Commons in March 2010 defined PDP as “an elite cartel at the centre of power in Nigeria …essentially a club of elite for sharing of oil rents and political spoils”.

It’s prevailing ideology was therefore “sharing”, which Doyin Okupe, Obasanjo’s spokesman,  while speaking on the marginalization of Yoruba under the Jonathan administration,  explained as “If things that are not enough, when people sit down to share and take decision, if there is no one to speak for you, there is a problem”.

In this regard, Ahmadu Ali as chairman of PDP and Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), was responsible for increasing fuel importers from about four to over 140 independent petroleum marketers some of who were later tried and indicted for the theft of about N2trillion. And distancing himself from the mess, the late Audu Ogbeh, a former chairman of PDP, had said ‘when I was chairman of PDP, my son never got involved in oil but two PDP national chairmen after me, their sons pocketed over N400billion without supplying a tea cup, of oil”.

As for President Obasanjo who once publicly tore his PDP card claiming he was no more playing partisan politics, it is on record he set up ADC as a vehicle for any disgruntled group with the party already taken over by a faction of PDP, the second faction going to his house to seek last Saturday while a third faction headed by Nyesom Wike was counting on the court to end the shenanigans of those who put their faith in the hands of those without electoral value.

Everyone in PDP is tarred with the same brush. As for Obasanjo, PDP leading members swore he spent close to N10b on his failed third term bid, a charge he denied. What he could not deny however was that he corralled serving governors and government contractors to donate about N7.5billion towards his presidential library while the national library he stated has been abandoned for close to 18 years.

Senator Bukola Saraki, the whistle-blower in the fuel subsidy scam for fuel neither imported nor delivered to Nigeria, was accused by PDP of indirectly benefitting from the scam. Farouk Lawal, whose committee uncovered the scam, was jailed for extorting bribe from Femi Otedola.

When Bode George who was later pardoned on technical ground after serving a jail term for helping PDP party members as chairman of Nigerian Ports Authority was appointed PDP BOT chairman, Dino Melaye who had just fallen out of favour with PDP said Bode George’s choice was because “everybody in PDP was an ex-convict”.

Unfortunately, when Oduah found herself among these hawks, she did not learn how to walk the tight rope before launching a crusade against foreign airlines including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic KLM and Lufthansa over excessive ticket charges on international routes. She was to discover later that it was a question of supply and demand as our elected and political appointees insisted on business and first class seats from the airlines.

Of course with her N500b loan part of which she said would be used to buy new aircrafts for airlines, she was also stepping on the toes of some PDP stalwarts who also doubled as airline operators.  Many of them were only interested in interest- free bailout loans which were often diverted to run other businesses in other West African countries.

The Economic and Financial Commission (EFCC) first indicted Stella Odua and the Nigerian subsidiary of Chinese construction giant, CCECC, of fraudulent cash transaction of N5billion in 2014. She was sacked by Jonathan on February 12, 2014 as a result of scandal that accompanied over N255m armoured cars which she authorized NCAA to procure for her use.

On Dec 17, 2022 EFCC filed a total of 25 counts against Oduah and CCECC.

Princess Oduah has since denied all allegations of corruption levelled against her claiming she had “made a mark in oil and gas and agricultural businesses before joining politics”.

Not much has been heard about the case which started some 11 years ago.  Now that EFCC has brought the case up again, it must ensure it is brought to a closure if people are not to believe it is a case of witch-hunting against high-achieving professional and a pacesetter by politicians on whose toes she had stepped. Justice delayed as they say, is justice denied.

Ex-Aviation Minister Stella Oduah arraigned with former aide over alleged N5b fraud

A former Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, has been arraigned before a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) sitting in Maitama on a five-count charge, in which she is accused, among other things, of misappropriating about N5 billion in public funds.

Oduah was arraigned along with one of her ex-aides, Gloria Odita, on the charge marked: CR/606/2025 filed on October 14 by the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF).

The ex-minister and her co-defendant were alleged to have committed the offences contained in the charge between January and February 2014, while she was in office.

The two defendants pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to them on Wednesday.

Shortly after their arraignment, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), who appeared for the ex-minister, and Wale Balogun (SAN), for the second defendant, applied for bail.

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), who led the prosecuting team, did not oppose the defendants’ bail applications.

Fagbemi urged the court to order the defendants to deposit their travel documents with the court to ensure that they are available for trial.

Ruling, Justice Hamza Muazu granted both defendants bail on self-recognition and ordered Oduah to submit her international passport, which she must only retrieve with the permission of the court.

Justice Muazu said since Odita’s passport was being held by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in relation to another case, the document should not be released under the conclusion of that case, following which it should be transferred to his court.

Tinubu steadily strengthening, repositioning economy, says Oduah

    • Ex-minister lauds Uzodimma’s role as APC coordinator in Southeast

A former Minister of Aviation, Senator Stella Oduah, has hailed President Bola Tinubu’s administration for steadily strengthening and repositioning the economy for sustainable stability and visible growth.

Oduah, who spoke at the weekend while addressing the Igbo Business Community in Abuja, acknowledged that President Tinubu’s policies were methodical and strategic towards unlocking the nation’s productive potentials.

The former minister also applauded the President for his manifest commitment towards the infrastructural development of the Southeast, as well as the recognition, acceptance and inclusion of the region in governance.

She praised President Tinubu and the national leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for appointing Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma as the zonal Coordinator of the party’s activities in the Southeast.

Oduah said she joined the party recently because of the governor’s appointment as well his efforts at bringing federal presence and development to the region through the APC.

Emphasising that the Tinubu administration was not given to loud hypes, self-praise, and showboating, the ex-minister described the administration’s achievements as real and verifiable.

According to her, with the steady implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda and the embracing of its principles by Nigerians, the current hardship in the country will soon become history.

“President Tinubu is a listening leader and silent achiever. He is not given to propaganda, media hypes, and showboating. He is focused on the mandate, and his achievements are non-speculative but real and verifiable.

“His policies are practical, methodical, and strategically geared towards unlocking the productive potentials of the nation.

“With the steady implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda and its acceptance by Nigerians, this administration is silently reigniting the ingenuity of Nigerians and creating massive job opportunities, especially for our youths in every sphere of the economy,” Oduah said.

The former minister hailed President Tinubu for keeping to his promise of 30 per cent affirmative action on youth inclusion in appointments and participation in governance.

She said this was in addition to approving the release of N60 billion for youths under the Agricultural Investment and Small and Medium Enterprises Scheme.

Oduah noted that such initiatives pointed to the President’s significant commitment towards unlocking and harnessing the potentials of the Nigerian youths and repositioning them for higher productivity, self-sufficiency and global competitiveness in all critical sectors.

She also applauded President Tinubu for his bold efforts in clearing the inherited $7 billion foreign exchange backlog, which she said had started to reflect in strengthening the naira and overall recovery of the national economy.

Commenting on the activities of the APC, Oduah said the appointment of Governor Uzodimma has endeared the Southeast to the party, given the governor’s popularity and achievements.

“I joined the APC because of the appointment of Governor Uzodimma as the Coordinator of the party in the Southeast and his ability to bring federal presence and development to the Southeast.

“Governor Uzodimma has made the Southeast to embrace the APC. Many more leaders in the Southeast are joining the APC because of him,” she said.

The Anambra-born senator expressed confidence that the Southeast has a lot to benefit from a government she said values, promotes and supports creativity, the quest for productivity and inclusiveness.

She said this was the reason the region had embraced President Tinubu and the APC.

Alleged N5bn fraud: Court shifts Stella Oduah, CCECC case to Nov. 14

A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday, rescheduled the trial of Sen. Stella Oduah, a Chinese construction giant, CCECC, and others on alleged N5 billion fraud charges for Nov. 14.

The matter, which was on number three on the cause list could not be heard by Justice Inyang Ekwo.

Although counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Offem Uket, was in court, the defendants, including Oduah, were not in court.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Justice Ekwo had, on July 21, ordered the EFCC to produce persons behind breaching his privacy through text messages on his phone and another group who petitioned the chief justice of Nigeria regarding the ongoing case.

The judge, who adjourned the matter until today, directed that the anti-corruption agency must produce the those persons in court.

“I will give a date for trial and make a consequential order because you have allowed this matter to degenerate this way.

“Do you think you can shield any of these persons who have interfered in these proceedings?” he asked rhetorically.

NAN reports that Oduah, a former senator representing Anambra North Senatorial District at the 9th National Assembly, and others were arraigned on July 21 on 25-count charge.

She was arraigned alongside CCECC Nigeria Ltd, the Nigerian subsidiary of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) established by the Chinese government to execute international contracts and economic cooperation.

Also joined in the charge are Gloria Odita, Nwosu Emmanuel Nnamdi and Chukwuma Irene Chinyere.

Others include Global Offshore and Marine Ltd, Tip Top Global Resources Ltd, Crystal Television Ltd and Sobora International Ltd.

They all pleaded not guilty to the counts and were admitted to bail in terms of the administrative bail earlier granted them by the anti-graft agency.

The EFCC accused the defendants of conspiracy to commit money laundering, transferring, taking control and taking possession of proceeds of fraud, aiding and abetting money laundering and opening anonymous bank accounts.

Specifically, the prosecution alleged in two of the 25 counts that Oduah, a former Aviation Minister, and Odita opened anonymous “Private Banking Nominee” dollar and naira accounts with First Bank Ltd, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 11(1) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011 (as amended) and punishable under Section 11(4) (a) of the same Act.

In the charge, CCECC Nigeria Limited was alleged to have transferred over N2.5 billion into the naira account of a Private Banking Nominee between March 31 and June 6, 2014.(NAN)

  • Airport upgrade: Hope rises for Edo agro-business

In a few months’ time, exporters of agricultural products in Edo State and its environs would not need to bother about delays in travelling to Lagos for the purpose of taking their products to any part of the world.

They would export their agro-products right from the Bénin Airport. Besides, businessmen, politicians and individuals can now land at the Bénin Airport any time of the day. This is because the airport has commenced night operations.

In 2013, during the inauguration of the remodeled Bénin Airport, former Governor Adams Oshiomhole requested the then Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah to ensure that the Airport operates in a 24-hour basis.

Oshiomhole had argued that the 24-hour operation for the airport would enable individuals, especially himself, meet emergency engagement in Abuja. He regretted that the Benin Airport being one of the oldest in the country remained the way it was despite the increase in traffic.

Oshiomhole’s successor, Godwin Obaseki has, however, seen to the realisation of his dream. Facilities in the 63-year-old Bénin Airport has been upgraded for it to carry out night operations. The equipment installed for the night operations were inaugurated last week by the Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika.

The equipment inaugurated at the Airport included thunder and lightning system, Secure Aviation Data Information System (SADIS); Enhanced Simple Approach Lightening System, CAT ll and Instrument Landing System (ILS)/Distance Measuring Equipment (DME).

Speaking at the inauguration, Senator Sirika said Edo people would gain a lot from the improved operational capability of the Bénin Airport because of the ability to come and go out of Bénin by air in reduced weather condition even when the pilot can barely see anything.

Senator Sirika further explained that the equipment are both ground-based and satellite-based. He said the satellite-based equipment would begin work if the ground-based ones failed.

He said: “The importance of the Benin culture and history is such that we cannot ignore. We will continue to upgrade facilities to meet its peers in other cities. The operational capacity of the Benin-City Airport has tremendously improved as we can now guarantee safe landing in reduced visibility and in bad weather condition. Aircraft can now land in Benin Airport at night. No more closure of the Airport by 6:00 p.m.

“When the country was divided into regions, the centrality of Benin is very important. Benin is the cradle of history, tradition and culture. There is connection between aviation, culture, commerce and others. We are intertwined and we hold Benin in high esteem. We will continue to promote this city, to enhance this city and make people come here. The more people come to Benin, the better for commerce.

“You have the Instrument Landing System which allows pilots to land in reduced weather. It is no longer pleasure to say from 6:00 p.m., you cannot land in Benin. We will continue to do more for Benin. We will site the agro-allied terminal at the Benin Airport. We are bringing cargo terminal for agro export. People involved in export of perishable items can send their goods to Europe very quickly. Obaseki has promised to participate in putting the structure for the facility in place.

“Airplane owners must improve their aircraft. They have to train their pilots. If their pilots are not trained, they cannot come here.”

On his part, an elated Governor Obaseki said the Bénin Airport could now compete with its peers across the world with the installation of the equipment and commencement of night landing facilities. He noted that people would have no excuse not to come to Bénin again whether at night on the excuses of bad weather.

He said, “Edo is a hub. We are a transportation hub. Benin Airport is one of the top five airports in Nigeria in terms of passenger traffic. We do not want to wait for the Federal Government alone to provide all that are needed.. So, we have to put in our resources to support them to ensure that they are attracted to make investment in our airport. With the night landing facility put in place, we shall now persuade airlines to make night stops in Benin. That way, they bring traffic into our state.

“We are inaugurating an array of things at the Airport. The benefits of all these facilities are limitless. What the cargo terminal means is that we can export our produce from here to all over the world.

“For you to have economic growth, you must have infrastructure. People must be able to come in and go out. Money must come in and leave freely. This air transportation infrastructure will just complement our other efforts in area of tourism, agriculture, infrastructure even education. What it means is that there will be no excuse. It will help business once people know they can get in and out of Benin at any time.

“We are not just unveiling a new technology for our airport; we are celebrating a very unique privilege and honour for a state to collaborate very closely with the Federal Government agency. The Benin Airport built in 1956 is being upgraded so that it can be ranked as an airport that could match any airport in the world by equipping it with the instrument every airport should have.

  • Stella Oduah defects to APGA

Senator Stella Oduah (Anambra North) has defected to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

She was led to the APGA National Secretariat in Abuja by Senator Victor Umeh and received by the National Chairman, Dr. Victor Oye.

Her defection brings the number of APGA Senators to two, apart from the six House of Representatives members who also accompanied her.

Mrs. Oduah said she has always been inspired by what the party represents in the Southeast and that her joining them is a home-coming for a party that has always been dear to her heart.

  • Easter: We must love, sacrifice like Christ – Oduah

As Christians around the world celebrate Easter, Sen. Stella Oduah, has urged Nigerians to emulate the virtues of love and sacrifice which Jesus Christ exhibited by dying on the cross.

In an Easter message she signed on Saturday, the lawmaker, representing Anambra North in the National Assembly, said with love, Nigeria would surmount its challenges.

She stated that “we must learn to love like Christ loved and we must sacrifice as Christ exemplified for us.

“If we love one another, the wanton killings, clashes, kidnappings, theft and other vices that bedevilled our society would not exist.

“With love and sacrifice there in empathy, understanding, tolerance and coexistence, we would indeed be united.

“Just as Christ taught us and also taught in Islam and other religions, love is a virtue which conquers all, where there is love, all other good virtues go along with it.”

The former Aviation Minister said Nigerians must also learn to assist the poor and the needy around them instead of indulging in lavish celebrations while neighbours go hungry.

She added that Easter was a time for sober reflection, a time for moral reevaluation and a time to retrace one’s steps.

“We must see the Easter as not just a time to celebrate the resurrection of Christ but a time to soberly reflect on the significance of his suffering death and resurrection and how well we are emulating the virtues he taught.

“For parents, it is a time to reflect on how well you have brought up your children. The family holds the key to good upbringing and therefore parents must raise their children up in the right way for an honest future generation.

“I, therefore, wish every Nigerian Christian and friends a wonderful Easter celebration.”

Allegation of evading EFCC mischievous, says Oduah

The Senator representing Anambra North, Senator. Stella Oduah, today described as mischievous, a publication that she was evading invitations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a statement issued in Abuja, Oduah said that the report was the handiwork of political detractors whose aim was to pitch the anti-graft agency against her.

Reports in some national dailies and online media had indicated that the Chairman Senate Committee on Cooperation and Integration was evading invitations to the commission to defend a N9.4 billion contract awarded during her time as Aviation Minister.

However the senator claimed that the story was mere fabrications which did not emanate from the EFCC.

She said that she had been in constant correspondence with the commission.

Oduah said that she is willing to defend her stewardship during her time as minister, adding that she followed due processes in all her dealings while in charge of the ministry.

“The season of politics is here again and some people must play the politics of pull down syndrome, this is what perhaps informed the fabrications in the story.

“How else do you explain that a serving senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a law abiding citizen, a chief executive officer of multinational companies, would be evasive to honour an invitation if not a mere mischief, that is informed by dirty politics.

“Even the publication did not say that I stole any government money or awarded contracts to myself,” she said.

The senator said that she had carved a niche for herself in the business world, within and outside the shores of Nigeria even before she ventured into the murky waters of Nigerian politics in 2010.

According to her, she is a citizen of Nigeria, who has no other home but Nigeria and would not be distracted by activities of her detractors.

She stated further that this would not be the first time her detractors would want to use the media to tarnish her hard earned image.

Oduah stressed that the sinister purpose of the news story is to pitch her against the Commission and the general public.

She therefore urged her detractors to leave her alone and learn to play the politics of hard facts and issues.

She stated that contracts awarded under her watch as a minister were done in her official capacity and they went through due process.

The senator added that in her time as minister, she transformed the aviation sector and followed all established processes and procedures.

The lawmaker, who represents Anambra North Senatorial District, said in Abuja on Monday that the story credited to an online medium was  based on  mere speculation  that was false.

NAPIMS boss gets 24 hour ultimatum to appear before Senate

Senate Committee on Local Content Wednesday gave the Group General Manager, National Petroleum Investment and Management Service ( NAPIMS ), Mr. Roland Ewubare, 24 hour ultimatum to appear before it or risk arrest.

The committee said that it would invoke constitutional provisions to compel the NAPISMS boss to appear he failed to honour its invitation within 24 hours.

This is contained in a statement by the Media Adviser to the Chairman, Senate Committee on Local Content, Chief Kayode Odunaro.

It said that the committee gave ultimatum after considering the huge variations associated with the $16 billion Egina Deep Sea Oil Project.

It quoted Chairman of the committee, Senator Solomon Adeola, to have said that it has become the trade mark of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and its subsidiaries to “treat National Assembly invitations with levity and flimsy excuses.”

Adeola noted that his committee will no longer deal with “lieutenants of these agencies without their heads or cogent reasons in advance.”

He said that NAPIMS sent three General Managers as representatives to the committee after it received an invitation three weeks ago for appearance of the Group General Manager to throw light on submissions made by Total Exploration and Production Nigeria Ltd handling the Egina project.

The statement quoted Vice Chairman of the committee, Senator Godswill Akpabio, to have said that “the importance attached to the information likely to be provided by the NAPIMS boss led members of the committee to turn out in large numbers.

Akpabio was quoted as saying that “it is insulting not only to the Nigerian Constitution but also to the office of the GGM for him to disregard the Senate invitation on issues relating to how Nigerians are being shortchanged by foreign companies and their local collaborators.”

It also quoted a member of the committee, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdulahi, to have said that the “Senate is angry that after 21 days notice the GGM refused to appear.”

Abdullahi added that “NAPIMS is in charge of a very critical sector of our economy and should be ready to answer the call of the Senate in its efforts to support Federal Government in delivering the dividend of democracy.”

It said that senators who attended the meeting included Gershon Bassey, Stella Oduah,  Biodun Olujim, Ali Wakili, Babatunde Alasoadura, Abdulahi Gumel and Hamman Missau.
