Ugo Ukah faults Keshi’s selection policy

Serbia-based defender, Ugo Ukah, has said he was not shocked Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2015 African Nations Cup in Equatorial Guinea because the country’s best players are not playing for the team.

The FK Čukarički of Serbia central defender, who has been capped once by Nigeria, questioned the yardsticks coach Stephen Keshi used to call up players and why he benched players who would have helped Nigeria on match day, africanFootball.com reports.

“I was not surprised that my darling country Nigeria did not qualify to defend the Nations Cup won just last year.

“This is because there are better players out there than the ones who are playing for Nigeria right now and so they deserve a chance to prove themselves in the national team,” Ukah told africanFootball.com.

He questioned why Sone Aluko, who has been in good form for his English Premier League side Hull City, was left on the bench when the Eagles needed to score goals and win the game.

“Aluko that has been doing great in his club Hull City has not been well used in the Super Eagles. A nation like Nigeria cannot afford to make such mistakes anymore,” he argued.

“It is time things got back to ‘normal’ in Nigeria for players who are doing well to be called up without any sentiments.

“Where are the players who won the AFCON last year in South Africa? They don’t know how to play anymore?

“There is a right-back doing well in Norway over the years, Akeem Latifu, he never geo a look-in, rather the coach has preferred playing a makeshift right-back who always causes problem for the team.

“That’s what’s going on in Nigeria and until things are done right way, we will not achieve anything againm,” he stated.

Ukah also made a case for himself, saying there is no reason he has only been capped once by his country.

“I am doing really well now and so it is very disappointing to be ignored like that and seeing what is going on in the team without being able to help.

“But hopefully things will change. If somebody else will come, I hope the selection and scouting for the best Nigerian players in the world will be improved to guarantee constant high level for the Super Eagles.

“If Keshi will stay, I hope he will try to change things and make them better because for sure he is a great coach and has the knowledge to do that because he has proved that before.”

Sacking me won’t solve Eagles’ problems – Keshi

Super Eagles head coach, Stephen Keshi, still wants to continue in his role despite missing out on qualification for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Keshi believes sacking him will do nothing to reverse the downward trend the team is currently experiencing, insisting the problems go beyond him.

“If a team fails, sacking the coach won’t solve the problem. The authority should look beyond the coach to find solutions to the problem,” sl10.ng quoted Keshi as saying on Friday.

Keshi, who has been working without a contract since the expiration of his last deal after the World Cup, admitted that failure to qualify for next year AFCON is a failure on his part.

“I can’t deny it is a shame that we failed to qualify, on my part I failed the nation but my players took South Africa for granted in a match they need to win.”

Keshi’s agent Emma Addo was however silent on his client future, but echoed Keshi’s sentiment that the problems of the team go beyond the coach.

Keshi Appeals to Eagles: Play robust African style against Congo

Super Eagles’ handler Stephen Keshi has told his players to play like Africa Champions and drop the European play and mentality as they engage the national team of Congo Brazzaville on Saturday in the make or mar 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The Big Boss as he is fondly called said that that is the only way the Super Eagles can beat Congo Brazzaville on their ground.

“I have told my players to play the African way when we meet Congo Brazzaville on Saturday. We need to play hard to get the result we crave for and we should drop the European style or method and play the African way”, he disclosed.

Keshi also expressed confidence in the ability of his players to weather the storm in Congo, while declaring that the spirit was high in the camp which points to victory for the Nigerian team.

“My players have really stepped up the gear and the spirit in camp is very high. The boys have been showing the hunger and urge to get victory against Congo and by the grace of God we will get victory. Nigerians should also rally round this team and support the team with prayers and we will come back with victory”, Keshi disclosed.

    Adeboye hails Keshi’s return

THE Special Adviser to the Lagos state governor on football matters, Anthony Adeyinka  Adeboye has welcomed the decision to allow Stephen Keshi continue his role as Super Eagles coach.

Following the intervention of President Goodluck Jonathan last week, and a request from Shaibu Amodu that Keshi be allowed to finish the qualification campaign for the continental finals in Morocco, Adeboye asked all stake holders and football followers to be patient with the Glass House to create an enabling football environment.

“We should accept the decision of the NFF to recall Keshi.  We should not forget that Keshi has been working as coach of the Eagles in the 2015 qualifiers without a salary following the expiration of his previous contract”

It would be recalled that an attempt to renegotiate a new deal with Keshi was deadlocked as the NFF couldn’t agree on wages with the 52-year-old former national team captain.

“Keshi should continue as the coach and I, strongly believe that he’ll lead the Super Eagles to Morocco in 2015. We should be patient and allow him complete his job”

Nigeria plays Congo and South Africa next month in the last two AFCON qualifiers.

The website reports that Super Eagles’ Media Officer, Toyin Ibitoye, on Thursday morning tweeted that Keshi is set to return to his job.

Goal gathered that Keshi has been asked to return to his post as part of reconciliatory moves in the Nigeria Football Federation as ordered by President Goodluck Jonathan.

The President has also asked the Chris Giwa faction to withdraw its case from court to ensure that Nigeria is not banned by FIFA.

However, the NFF is yet to release any official statement.

Keshi was sacked on October 16, a day after the Super Eagles defeated Sudan 3-1 in Abuja, by the Amaju Pinnick-led board of the NFF who recalled former coach, Shaibu Amodu, in an interim capacity.

The African champions had won just one out of four qualifying matches and fans were forced to ask for the coach’s sack.

    Egwuekwe, Ossai target Champions League

Warri Wolves’  duo of Azubuike Egwuekwe  and Uche Ossai believe the Seasiders would qualify for the CAF Champions League at the end of the season,  due to their current form in the Glo Premier League this season.

Wolves have been representing the country in the CAF Confederation Cup for quite some time now but the duo in a chat  with SportingLife in  Owerri said it was time they stepped up to the Champions League competition having participated in the second tier African Cup competition for over two times including this year.

Egwuekwe a towering defender and the captain of Warri Wolves told SportingLife that he was disappointed to have lost the game at Heartland because they came with the mindset of getting an away draw.

The Anambra born defender added that he was unhappy at the choice of Heartland’s goal (a fine free-kick) in the 68th minute through Emeka Ogbugh and some questionable calls by the centre referee.

Egwuekwe said that they had forgotten about the loss to Heartland and that they would be fired up to beat Crown FC who he sees as under-dogs because of their loss at home to Enugu Rangers.

“We are all disappointed that we lost to Heartland because we  came here looking for an away win or betterstill a draw but a loss was quite unthinkable. We are happy that we are still second on the log.

“We will host Crown FC on Wednesday(today) and it is our prime target to win well. We want to play in the Champions League and that is what we are working towards,” Egwuekwe, a Super Eagles’ defender told SportingLife.

Uche Ossai who was in the early home based team that the former Super Eagles’ coach, Stephen Keshi initially assembled revealed to SportingLife that it would be a delight for them to play in the Champions League next season having featured in the Confederation Cup.

He said injuries and the rotation policy of the Warri Wolves’ Coach, Paul Aigbogun have limited his games this season.

    • Big Boss plans to go on break

Stephen Keshi has told AfricanFootball.com that he would rather take a break than take up a new coaching job immediately after he was shown the door by Nigeria.

The former Eagles coach declined comments on the reports linking him with the top coaching post in Ethiopia.

“Ethiopia is a great country that’s all. No more comments,” Keshi said.

A very close source to Stephen Keshi further told AfricanFootball.com: “There is nothing with Ethiopia. Keshi just wants to rest right now. Let’s allow him rest for now I beg.”

Top Ethiopian journalist Taddeshp Mandefro with the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC ) also insisted the that Ethiopian Football Association have not received any application from Keshi.

Keshi was reported to have opened talks with the EFA to take over the country’s team.

“I spoke with the EFA president Juneidin Basha yesterday (Sunday) on the report of Keshi taking over and he said the EFA have not received any application from Keshi for the EFA job,” Mandefro explained.

“Mariano Barreto remains the coach of the Ethiopian national team. Even though he is not doing too well right now, the EFA have not mentioned anything about sack.”

  • Keshi expected in Ethiopia for contract talks

Keshi expected in Ethiopia for contract talks

Former Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, is expected in Ethiopia this week to finalise discussions with the country’s FA on the vacant national team job, africanFootball.com reports.

A close source in the Ethiopian FA, who did not want to be identified, told africanFootball.com Sunday morning that Keshi is expected in Addis Ababa this week to continue talks on the possibility of taking over the national team.

“He is expected in Ethiopia late this week,” revealed the source.

Ironically, Keshi denied Ethiopians the chance of qualifying for their first-ever World Cup last year when the Super Eagles beat them both at home and away in a final playoff.

Last week, the Nigeria fired Keshi after the country’s laboured campaign to qualify for next year’s African Nations Cup in Morocco.

“We hope we can get him because he is a high profile coach who has won AFCON with Nigeria and also took them to the World Cup.”

Keshi, who has already coached Togo and Mali, is expected to salvage Ethiopia’s Nations Cup hopes as the team currently lies third in Group B with three points from four matches, three points behind second-placed Mali.

Algeria has already qualified for the tournament proper after compiling 12 points.

Ethiopia’s remaining matches are away in Algeria and then at home to bottom team Malawi next month.

The source further said Ethiopia officials are not comfortable with Portuguese coach Mariano Barreto who only managed a 3-2 away win over Mali in Wednesday’s 2015 AFCON qualifier, but has lost 99 per cent of the team matches including build-ups.

  • Keshi sacked in Nigeria’s interest – Pinnick

Keshi sacked in Nigeria’s interest – Pinnick

The Nigeria Football Federation president, Amaju Pinnick, has explained the rationale behind the sacking of Stephen Keshi.

The new NFF board showed Keshi the exit on Thursday morning as national team coach, despite his side’s 3-1 home win against Sudan that kept the Super Eagles in the running for the 2015 African Nations Cup in Morocco.

Pinnick said the decision not to renew the contract of the former Nigerian international was in the best interest of the nation.

“Does it sound right for us to say that the Eagles played for Keshi and not for the country? So if a new coach comes in now, what would they do? We took the decision in the best interest of the nation.

“We also saw a lot of things that had happened in the past as there were issues that bothered about security because it was from the beginning of our game against Sudan that a hero in Keshi was booed.

“We took this decision to save Keshi and let him know that he’s a hero and should remain a hero,” supersport.com quoted Pinnick as saying on Friday morning.

The NFF president also added that Keshi and his assistants would be paid all their outstanding entitlements within two weeks.
