  • Edo takes custody of stowaway boy

he Edo State government has taken custody of Daniel Ohikhena, the 13-year-old boy who flew from Benin to Lagos in the tyre compartment of an Arik aircraft.

It was not confirmed yesterday which correctional facility it plans to take Daniel to.

Many government officials declined comments on the matter but a source said Daniel would not be handed over to his family.

The source said they discovered that Daniel would not do well, if he was returned to his parents since they are separated.

His dad, Osaigbovo, who suddenly appeared on Tuesday, said he was yet to see his son.

In a telephone chat, Osaigbovo said he has been begging to see his son, adding that he was yet to be told of what transpired at the meeting attended by Governor Adams Oshiomhole, State Director of the Directorate of State Security Service (DSS) Bakori Tukur, officials of the Ministry of Women Affairs, his wife and son.

Daniel’s mother, Evelyn, however, vowed to take custody of her son. She said the government should be ready to “detain” her as well.

Daniel was said to have told the governor and security operatives that he does not want to see his father.

The issue of who takes custody was said to have generated much argument at the meeting.

Sources at the meeting said officials of the ministry and the SSS argued contrary to the governor’s suggestion that Daniel should be handed over to his mother.

“There was an argument over who should take custody of the boy. The governor said he should be given to his mother but the DSS and officials of the ministry of Women Affairs said the government should take custody.”

Evelyn told reporters yesterday that she was not prepared to reconcile with her husband.

She said they have been separated for over a year because of the problem she had from the organisation she borrowed money from.

Mrs. Ohikhena said when her husband was informed about their missing son, he responded by saying, “I should go and look for his son for him.

“I was robbed on my way from a business trip to Koko market in Delta State. I also had a defect in one eye that has affected my vision.

“I cannot see out of one eye at the moment due to incessant beatings I received from him.

“The question you people should ask him is whether he knows the private school Daniel was attending before I transferred him to the public school at Ogbe.

“He has since abandoned us. He and his family have been disturbing me since they heard that Daniel was given a scholarship.

“My husband is staying in his mother’s house. I will resist any attempt to deprive me of the custody of my son. If it happens I will ask them to detain me with him. I am not after the scholarship money. All I am after is for them to release my son to me,” she said.

The government said its interaction with Daniel showed an intelligent kid who needs more care.

Commissioner for Information and Orientation Louis Odion said the government was taking steps to ensure Daniel got psychological support to enable him achieved his potentials.

Odion stated that the state is ready to assist him consistent with the philosophy of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

He said: “As a dotting parent himself, Governor Oshiomhole has followed the development closely. As a matter of fact, he personally engaged Daniel.

“From his interaction with Daniel and his parents, who unfortunately are separated, it is obvious that there is a deficient in terms of parental care even though Daniel sounds quite intelligent.

“We will ensure that Daniel benefits first of all from the intervention from clinical psychologists.

“His psychic needs to be weaned off destructive anger.”

  • I thought my son was kidnapped – Stowaway boy’s father

Father of Daniel, Osaigbovo, on Tuesday made a surprise appearance at the Edo State Government House shortly after his son and wife were taken inside.

He was not invited to join in the meeting.

Osaigbovo said he was a commercial bus driver and that he was just informed about the scholarship offer by his wife.

The father, who was accompanied by some of his relatives, denied allegations that they turned up because of the scholarship offer.

He said he has been taking care of his children contrary to the uncaring attitude by his wife.

Osaigbovo aged 44 said he had a problem with the wife whom he married over 20 years ago.

He displayed a photograph of him and two of his children having a nice time out.

He said, “We quarreled last year. I did not leave my home. I invited my wife to join me but she said where I was staying was too far and she decided to stay apart. It is false and a lie that I have not been taking care of my four children.”

On why he has been quite about his son’s predicament, Osaigbovo said his wife asked him to calm down that she would take care of everything.

“I went with her to the police station but she said I should keep quiet.

“I was shocked when I hear the news. Initially, I thought my son was kidnapped but I thank God he is alive. I am here to make sure my son is really alive.”

“My son likes movies. He is quiet and easy going,” Osaigbovo stated.

Security agency may release stowaway-boy today

The State Security Service (SSS) may release the stowaway-boy, Daniel Ohikhena, today.

Daniel beat security at the Benin Airport to get into the under carriage of an Arik Air aircraft, which landed in Lagos on August 24.

A security source told The Nation that operatives of the SSS might have concluded investigations on the circumstances leading to how the teenager entered the aircraft’s tyre compartment.

The source said the operatives investigated the popular thinking that the teenager might have embarked on the controversial flight out of adventure without any motive to blow up the aircraft.

Aviation authorities, including the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) are closing identified gaps in previous audit of the airport to avoid a recurrence of the incident.

Aviation security experts have challenged FAAN to step up security to forestall runway incursions at the airports.

The experts advised FAAN to go beyond patrolling the airside with operational vehicles and personnel, adding that it should deploy the latest technology that could capture the activities around the airport from the point of boarding until the aircraft takes off.

The Chairman of Aviation Stakeholders Squaretable, Capt Balarabe Usman, told reporters in Lagos yesterday that the aviation industry had suffered years of neglect, which was inherited by the present administration.

According to him, security equipment and facilities were allowed to decay. There were efforts to build perimeter fencing at the airports, especially at the major airports, but such efforts were abandoned halfway.

Another security expert and the CEO of Centurion Securities Limited, Group Captain John Ojikutu (rtd), said during the audit of airport security by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, FAAN failed to provide perimeter fencing and security fencing of the airports in 2004, 2006 and 2008.

Usman, the former chief security officer of FAAN and an aviation security consultant, also said if the agency had completed the initial projects on perimeter fencing, the situation would not have degenerated to the level where some airports do not have perimeter fencing.

“While we decry the failure of FAAN to provide adequate security at the airside of some of these airports, we have to also hail the efforts being made by the Ministry of Aviation to reinforce security to forestall such incidents happening in future. I know that what this government inherited in terms of airport facilities were decayed terminals, security equipment and non-existing facilities, but since it started this remodelling programme, we have witnessed what have been achieved in so short a time and we know that in a question of months, most airports will have perimeter fencing and operational vehicles,” Usman said.

“The Federal Government has started the deployment of sophisticated screening equipment at the airports and simultaneously kicked off the training of personnel to man this equipment.”
