They were in their home, minding their business. Unknown to mother and daughter, there was terror on the street outside.

Robbers laid siege close to their house in Festac Town, Lagos, shooting indiscriminately from a machine gun reportedly mounted at 23 Road Junction.

It was like a movie scene  as they shot their way into two banks, carting away millions of naira. Their stray bullets hit mother and daughter at Block 8, 23 Road House, killing the child instantly. The mother reportedly died an hour later because help came late.

Eyewitnesses said some of the robbers wore hoods; others were in military camouflage.

Mrs. Jane Beluchukwu-Ndirika, a nurse and her 14-month-old daughter Nmesoma, were inside their two-bedroom apartment on the top floor of their three-storey building when the bullets pierced through the door and hit them.

The late Mrs. Beluchukwu-Ndirika was a nurse at the Igando General Hospital in Lagos.

Area E Commander of the Lagos Police Mr. Frank Mba whose jurisdiction covers Festac and environs, visited the house and confirmed that mother and daughter had died.

Yesterday’s killings followed Monday’s killing of the Managing Director of the Lekki Free Trade Zone by some members of the community. 17 people were yesterday arraigned for the killing.

The late Mrs. Beluchukwu-Ndirika’s friend, simply identified as Uche yesterday narrated in tears, how mother and child died.

She said: “My friend could not get help almost an hour after she was shot, because the robbers were still on shooting spree.

“It was terrible. They took their time. I cannot even explain, I do not know what to say. But I can tell you that my best friend and sister was soaked in blood and in pains for about one hour.

“I do not live in Festac but I came to visit her and was about to leave this morning (yesterday). We have already put my bag outside and I was playing with her son.

“Suddenly, we started hearing gunshots, it was scary, I have never heard anything like that. We peeped and saw people in army camouflage and some in suit. They took their time, and were shooting non-stop.

“The bullets were just sounding from different directions. So, we hid at the back of the door. But the baby started crying and Jane went into the room and carried her.

“The next thing I saw was something that moved like fire and in a very fast speed. The next thing I heard was Jane screaming.

“She called out for help, by that time she had managed to put the baby on the bed in the room. She was becoming weak and going down, so I tried to hold her but could not.

“So, I took one of her children’s clothes and tried to stop the blood flow, that was when I saw a hole on her chest. I was shouting for help but no one could come out because the armed robbers were still there.

“I called her neighbours, who called the police but even the police did not come. The armed robbers were there for about one hour after shooting. My friend was soaked in blood. The baby’s blood also soaked the bed.

“I watched my friend die and I could not do much to help her. Please do not even talk about police because they did not come out.

“The armed robbers took their time; they were loading bullets into their guns and were shooting and discussing among themselves.

“From this room, we heard them shouting and telling their colleagues to come out first; it looks like they were just enjoying themselves without interruption,” she said.

Corroborating Uche’s story, one Mr. John Irabor, a neighbour to the deceased said stray bullets entered two other flats in the buiding.

He told The Nation that Mrs. Beluchukwu-Ndirika was already dead by the time they took her to the hospital.

“We took her to the hospital in my car. The truth is by the time I got into her apartment after the robbers left, she was already dead.

“They mounted their machine gun just by the junction here. They were shooting repeatedly. I am very disappointed with the police because I personnaly called them. I called the Area Commander and I also called the state command’s Public Relations Officer, who assured me they were on their way.

“Unfortunately, the police did not show up until the robbers had fled.

“So, I came into the apartment and alerted other neighbours; we quickly took her to a hospital on 321 road (C close), but they refused to take her in and said she no longer had the pulse.

“They told us to take her to a general hospital and we quickly rushed to the hospital at First Gate, where they issued her death certificate. We took her to The Lord’s Chosen, where her husband is a Pastor and after some time, we took her to Igando General Hospital, where she worked as a nurse.

“She was confirmed dead at three hospitals. The baby also died. It was my son who carried the baby on a bike and rushed her to the hospital but by that time she had passed on too,” he said.

The baby’s remains were wrapped and kept inside the room at the time of our reporter’s visit to the house yesterday. Neighbours and church members thronged the deceased’s residence.

It was also learnt that a security man at one of the banks raided and another resident were hit by stray bullets.

While the resident, who was in a compound, adjacent to that of the Ndirikas, was said to have had one of his fingers chopped off by stray bullet, it could not be ascertained where the bullet hit the bank guard.

  • Stray bullets kill two mothers at funeral in Edo

Stray bullets from a policeman’s gun at the weekend killed two nursing mothers at the funeral of an indigene, Mr Itu Joseph, at Ivhiokhile Quarters of Fugar, headquarters of Etsako Central Local Government Area of Edo State.

The policeman and his colleagues were said to have accompanied a traditional ruler in Uzaire clan, Imonike Omogbai, to the event.

But one of them, whose identity could not be ascertained, reportedly started “shooting” without reason.

A two-month-old baby strapped to the back of one of the victims, Mrs Sandra Imhaku, was almost hit. The bullet that hit its mother on the neck was few inches from the baby.

The late Mrs Imhaku was said to have lost her husband last year when she was expecting the baby.

She was rushed to Irrua Specialist Hospital, where she died on Sunday morning.

The other victim, simply identified as Mrs. Saliu, an indigene of Fugar, reportedly came from Warri, Delta State, with her husband to attend the funeral of her in-law, Mr. Joseph.

She was said to have collapsed and died instantly, following the gunshot.

It was learnt that the policeman held a rifle with one hand and attempted to open the car door for the monarch with the other hand.

His gun was said to have started firing; the innocent women were hit, as guests were leaving the venue.

A source said the policemen were almost lynched by the mob.

A cousin of one of the victims, Mike Imhaku, said the incident had been reported at the Auchi Police Division.

Police Commissioner Samuel Adegbuyi, who confirmed the incident, said a case of accidental discharge in which two women were killed, was reported to him on Saturday.

He said the police officer had been arrested, adding that investigation into the incident had begun.

  • Stray bullets kill woman as OPC men, pipeline vandals clash in Ogun

A fierce battle between men of the Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) and suspected pipeline vandals yesterday, left an unidentified woman dead.

The woman was said to have been hit by stray bullets from the ethnic militias while driving into the nearby journalists’ estate in Arepo.

The confrontation was said to have happened late evening when the OPC members were alerted of the presence of the vandals.

An exchange of fire between the vandals and OPC members lasted several hours.

A source who spoke in confidence said: “The OPC members engaged the vandals when they tried to cart away petrol stored in 50 litre kegs in our area. The woman was returning home from hospital in her car when the vandals fired shots indiscriminately, unfortunately one of the bullets hit the woman killing her instantly.

The General Manager of Donyx Global Concept Ltd, the company managing the protection of pipelines in Arepo, Mr Femi Ekundayo, recalled how the incident happened.

He said: “Our men had intercepted a group of pipeline vandals, who stormed Arepo a few days earlier in three vanagon buses. They also intercepted their buses loaded with several 50 litre jerry cans. Two members of the gang were apprehended by our men, but one of them escaped by jumping into a river. One suspect was however taken to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) office in Mosinmi, Sagamu, Ogun State.

“However, the vandals regrouped and came back yesterday and they fired shots indiscriminately. Their mission was to attack our men and it was in the process that the unidentified pregnant woman, who was returning from a hospital in her car, was hit by a stray bullet and she died instantly.”

Confirming the incident, the spokesman of Ogun Police Command, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, said: “ We heard information that there was sporadic shooting at the pipeline area of Arepo involving OPC men and suspected vandals. A woman was killed by stray bullets during the incident.

“The driver of the woman said bullets pierced through her throat. The woman was carrying six month pregnancy and she was hit by stray bullet while returning from a hospital where her ailing husband is admitted.

“For now, we cannot exactly hold anyone responsible for the death of the woman. We wouldn’t want to say anything until our findings are concluded. The body of the woman has been deposited in a mortuary for autopsy while investigation continues,” he added.

  • Mayhem in Ibadan as police stray bullets kill two

Mayhem in Ibadan as police stray bullets kill two

Two middle-aged men died yesterday in Ibadan after being hit by stray bullets from a policeman’s gun.

According to an eyewitness account, violence broke out at the popular Oje Market in the Oyo State capital, after the stray bullet hit a civilian who died on the spot.

As the news of the death of the man spread, many people took to the street in protest against the killing.

In the melee that ensued between policemen and the protesters, about 20 people were reportedly injured.

Some residents abandoned their homes in fear.

The cause of the trouble that preceded the killing was the refusal of some commercial transporters to allow some hoodlums to extort money from motorists.

It was gathered that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Agugu Division, Mr. Timothy Adedeji, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), who was on patrol, attempted to broker peace between the fighting parties.

An eyewitness, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said another policeman tried to disperse the mob through persuasion. But when they attempted to attack him, he fired some shots into the air to scare them.

“A shot was fired and the bullet hit a man. The man died. The mob swooped on the two policemen. They took a police rifle and bolted away,” the source said.

He said policemen from Agugu Division came to rescue the duo (the policemen who were attacked) and took them to a nearby hospital.

Police spokeswoman Bisi Ilobanefor said: “The two policemen were rescued from the mob’s attack. The mob later regrouped and went to Agugu Division, apparently to attack the station. The situation was brought under control through reinforcement.

“The policemen in an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) that was positioned some metres away from the station to control the mob later saw a police rifle with the mob. They pursued the mob, which reacted by firing shots at the policemen

“The stray bullet from the hoodlums that stole the police gun hit a passerby and, unfortunately, the person also died. The situation has since been brought under control.

“At present, peace has been restored in the area. The policemen are in the hospital receiving treatment.

“The police have gone into the matter; we are investigating the incident. If the policemen in question are found to have misused their firearms, we have disciplinary measures through which erring policemen are brought to book.

“The police are investigating the case and our investigation would determine what actually happened. Investigation will shed more light but we are assuring the public that no stone would be left unturned towards ensuring that justice prevails.”

But Mrs. Ilobanefor could not confirm if the victim was a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) or the Motorcycle Operators Association.

She said the rifle had been recovered with only six rounds of ammunition left, adding that there were 33 rounds when it was seized.

Commissioner of Police Muhammed Indabawa has set up a panel to investigating the incident.
