Stroke: Increasing occurrence in young adults

    By Mojisola Alaiya

There has been reports of increasing occurrence of stroke among youths or young adults. A stroke is a medical condition often associated with advancing age. Most people will not expect a teenager or someone in his/her twenties to experience this medical condition; hence, the symptoms in people in that age group may go unnoticed or misdiagnosed.

A stroke is a condition in which the brain cells suddenly die because of lack of oxygen. A stroke can be caused by an obstruction in the blood flow or the rupture of an artery that feeds the brain. The victim may suddenly become paralyzed on one side of the body, lose the ability to speak or there may be memory loss.

There are two types of stroke – Ischemic and Hemorrhagic stroke.

Ischemic stroke occurs when a blood clot forms and block blood flow to part of the brain. The blood clot can be formed anywhere in the body and carried through the bloodstream to the brain.

Hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel on the brain’s surface ruptures and fills the space between the brain and the skull with blood or when a defective artery in the brain bursts and fills the surrounding tissue with blood.

The outcome of a stroke depends on where it occurs and how much the brain is affected. Minor strokes may result in weakness in arm or leg while major strokes may lead to paralysis or death.

Hemorrhagic strokes can be caused by uncontrolled high blood pressure, head injury or aneurysms.

Symptoms of stroke include loss of balance, speech problems, dizziness, paralysis, impaired vision, sudden severe headache, confusion. Smaller strokes may not cause any symptom but can still damage brain tissue. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, get help immediately. That pain you are having in your arm or leg may mean that you are experiencing stroke. Quickly get yourself to the hospital immediately.

Epidemiological studies have shown that stroke can occur in children, adolescents and young adults.

Causes of stroke in children include infections, trauma, heart disorders, sickle cell disease and dehydration.  Stroke in adolescents, teenagers or young people can be due to drug abuse in addition to those mentioned previously. Causes of stroke in young adults  also include migraine, pregnancy, birth control pills, smoking,  inadequate sleep and obesity.

In the USA, stroke in young people is attributed majorly to obesity.  Obesity increases the risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. Parents should therefore ensure they encourage healthy eating habits in their children. In low income society, people erroneously think obese children are well fed children. This is wrong. They are well fed alright but with the wrong things.

    HOW TO PREVENT STROKE

The first step is to watch what you eat. Endeavor to eat a diet that is low in saturated fats and high in fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains,  e.g wheat, beans, soy beans, fish etc. Pastries such as pies and egg-based meals should be taken minimally or avoided if one can.

Secondly, exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight. Technology has made most people both old and young to live sedentary lifestyles. They occupy a sitting position all day either in front of the computer, going through the phone or in front of the TV set.

Thirdly, identify underlying diseases or susceptibility to such diseases. Do you have a history of certain diseases such as hypertension, diabetes in your family? Work with your doctor to put such diseases in check.

It is important to control high blood pressure and high cholesterol at an early age.

Lastly,  young people should avoid drug abuse, excessive alcohol intake and smoking. The manufacturers of cigarettes warns constantly through their adverts that smokers are likely to die young. What other reason do you need to quit smoking?

FOPL: FG closes gap on hypertension, stroke, heart attack

The federal government has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering Nigerians to make healthier food choices through clear and visible nutritional information, as part of efforts to tackle the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

To advance this goal, it inaugurated the National Technical Working Group on Front-of-Pack Labelling (NTWG-FOPL) on Wednesday in Abuja.

The group is tasked with developing a national framework to guide food policy, enhance consumer awareness, and help reduce the prevalence of diet-related illnesses linked to excessive consumption of sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats.

The technical working group includes experts from government agencies, civil society, academia, and development partners. Its duties include validating a national nutrient profiling model, reviewing international best practices, conducting consumer behaviour research, and developing a roadmap for nationwide implementation.

The group is also tasked with designing a public education campaign to ensure the system is understood across all demographics, from cities to rural communities.

While inaugurating the working group, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Daju Kachollom, described the initiative as a critical milestone in implementing the National Policy on Food Safety and Quality and its 2023 Implementation Plan.

She noted that NCDs, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and chronic respiratory conditions now account for nearly 30 percent of all deaths in Nigeria, with the probability of premature death from these illnesses standing at 22 percent among people aged 30 to 69.

“Behind each of these numbers is a real family struggling with hospital bills and preventable suffering. We owe them better,” she said.

Represented by her Senior Technical Adviser, Dogara Okara, the Permanent Secretary explained that Front-of-Pack Labelling is a globally endorsed strategy by the World Health Organization (WHO) to provide simple warning messages, such as colour-coded symbols on the front of packaged foods to alert consumers about high levels of sugar, salt, and fats.

“Nigerians deserve to know, at a glance what they’re feeding their families. This tool will especially benefit those living with chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension,” she noted

Kachollom said the initiative builds on Nigeria’s broader public health efforts, including the sodium reduction guidelines launched in March and the 2022 NAFDAC regulation aimed at eliminating industrially produced trans fats.

“The success of this programme depends on our ability to create a labelling system that is locally relevant, culturally appropriate, and universally understood,” Kachollom said.

Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of the WHO, the Technical Officer for Nutrition at the organization, Dr. Pindar Wakawa, commended Nigeria’s leadership in launching the FOPL initiative, calling it an important step in the country’s fight against diet-related diseases.

He said the programme aligns with the global 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which aims to reduce premature deaths from NCDs by one-third.

He warned, however, that this cannot be achieved without strong regulatory measures to counter unhealthy food environments.

Citing WHO’s 2018 Nigeria country profile, Wakawa said cardiovascular disease accounts for 11% of total deaths, cancers 4%, chronic respiratory diseases 2%, and diabetes 1%.

He noted that poor nutrition remains a key driver largely due to the excessive intake of sugars, salt, and unhealthy fats often consumed unknowingly due to unclear packaging.

“Front-of-Pack Labelling is a cost-effective and practical tool that helps consumers make better dietary decisions. It gives people power over what they eat, especially in a market saturated with ultra-processed foods,” he said.

Wakawa also commended Nigeria’s recent policy strides, the sodium reduction guidelines, the sugary drinks tax, and trans-fat regulations but emphasized that tying these efforts together with a robust FOPL system would amplify their impact.

John Atanda, Director and National Coordinator for Safety and Quality Programmes at the ministry, said the rise in hypertension now affecting an estimated 44 percent of Nigerian adults, was among the triggers for the government’s push for food labelling reform.

“This initiative is about saving lives. We need a labelling system that even rural communities can understand, possibly in local languages,” he said.

He explained that the system would use easily recognizable colour codes like red for high sodium or sugar to quickly alert consumers of potential health risks, adding, “It’s especially critical for those with pre-existing health conditions”.

Development partners and civil society organizations, including the Network for Health Equity and Development (NHED) and Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA), among others, public health advocates praised the initiative as a long-overdue step towards food justice.

Abayomi Sarumi, Associate Director for the Food Justice Program at CAPPA, said, “It is not enough for people to have access to food, it must be safe, nutritious, and transparently labelled.

“For too long, producers have known what’s in their products while consumers are left in the dark.”

Sarumi noted that the FOPL programme complements other policies such as the sugar tax and mandatory trans-fat regulation, stressing, “We’re not just putting stickers on food; we’re building a system of accountability that allows Nigerians to make informed decisions and live healthier lives.”

  • Mr. Ibu debunks stroke rumour

Popular comic actor, John Okafor, a.k.a Mr. Ibu has debunked the rumours making the rounds that he is currently down with stroke.

Mr. Ibu made this known via an Instagram post on Thursday

In his words, “I am hale and hearty. I am speaking from my house, in Lekki.” “I have been receiving calls from across the world since today. I don’t know who is spreading this false news about me. I don’t know what they saying. Na their papa get stroke.”

He also expressed disappointment over the ’wicked rumours’ and added that he has handed the rumour peddlers to God.

He said, “Oh God! People are saying that I have stroke that I am down with stroke, why? How can you announce somebody’s sickness and you have many, you don’t even announce one. I don’t have any stroke please. This is my wife, my humble wife. Well, we hand over everything to God.”

  • Actors support stroke prevention initiative

YORUBA actors Dejo Tunfulu and Kudirat Soyemi, aka No Network have thrown their weight behind the Stroke prevention and care initiative which held penultimate Saturday at Bond FM, Ikeja, Lagos.

The program was organised to enlighten the public on the prevention of stroke and its treatment.

Speaking at the event, President, Stroke Prevention and Care Initiative, Otunba Abdulrahmon Olubunmi Osoba said, while stroke patients are being neglected at hospitals, people tend not to care about their well-being and don’t go for medical checkup often.

“We discovered that even the government doesn’t care much about stroke patients and most of them are suffering,” said Osoba.

“Some don’t have money to pay their bills at hospitals and some are being neglected by their relatives so that is what brought about the initiative to assist them, although we don’t have sponsors yet, all we have been doing is from our own pockets but we are optimistic that we will get sponsors.”

He added that although World Stroke Day is usually marked every October 29, the organisation deemed it fit to create awareness now before the date.

Osoba, who has been in the business of stroke treatment for about 30 years, also disclosed that majority of patients are “being abandoned and whenever I treat them; some of them are unable to pay that is why I brought us this organisation to be helping them. But as far as this organisation is concerned it is not limited to herbal treatment only because we also have medical doctors, physiotherapists, and counsellors among us.”

Osoba however, discussed some of the symptoms of imminent stroke: “Some are having the symptoms but they don’t know. Constant headache on one side of the head, high blood pressure, abnormal feelings on one side of the body, heaviness on one side and aching and there is one that is being referred to as a spiritual attack where one might not even see any symptoms but will suddenly come so that is why we differentiate between the spiritual one and the medical one.”

While applauding the initiative, Dejo said it will help people remember that health is wealth.

  • Stroke common cause of disability, says expert

The President, Nigerian Stroke Organisation (NSO), Prof. Yomi Ogun, has described stroke as the commonest cause of disability and the second largest cause of preventable deaths globally.

Ogun made the assertion at a campaign in Lagos to raise awareness on the prevention of stroke in commemoration of the 2017 World Stroke Day.

The theme for the 2017 World Stroke Day is: “What is Your Reason for Preventing Strokes?”

He said: “World Stroke Day marks every Oct. 29 provides an annual opportunity for stroke stakeholders to coordinate awareness and advocacy campaigns and build commitment to reducing the burden of stroke at global, regional and local level.

“By creating a global platform from which we can speak out, World Stroke Day amplifies our individual voices and brings more people into the conversation about stroke prevention, treatment and support,’’ an Online publication-worldstrokecampaign said.

“NSO today joined the global calls for urgent action to prevent stroke and respond to new data, which indicates stroke as being responsible for years of life lived with disability worldwide in 2016.

“Stroke happens when the blood supply to parts of the brain is cut off, without the blood, brain cell can be damaged or die, affecting a person’s body, mobility, speech and how they think or feel.

“There are estimated 17 million stroke cases worldwide each year and at least, 200, 000 of which occur in Nigeria.

“In Nigeria today, stroke is the most medical emergency in all teaching hospitals, while other hospitals account for up to eight to 10 neurological hospital admission.”

According to Ogun, the theme for 2017 focuses attention on creating awareness on the risk factors and preventive measures by all stroke stakeholders.

“Stroke can affect anyone, can occur anywhere and at any time; it calls for urgent mass health education on strategies to prevent first and recurrent strokes.

“We know that 90 per cent of strokes are associated with risk factors that we can all do something about.

“They include the control of high blood pressure, doing moderate exercise, stop smoking and reduce alcohol intake and also maintaining healthy diet, amongst others.

“Addressing the risk factors will not just have major impact on stroke prevention, but will also prevent deaths from other non-communicable diseases,” Ogun said.

The president of the organisation said that giving urgent priority to prevention would yield obvious benefits in terms of reduced human, social and economic cost.

Also, Prof. Mustapha Danesi, the Board of Trustee of the organisation, said it was important for the public to note that stroke was potentially preventable and treated when presented early.

Danesi said: “The important thing is if a stroke case is presented within one hour of noticing, the better the chance of recovery.

“We are here to draw the attention of the public to the devastating effect of stroke to the populace, as a public health, as well as a disease.

“It is important because, we have to stop the myth and believe that once a person develops stroke, one will no longer be useful.”

NSO Vice-President Prof. Njideka Okubadejo, said the key steps to prevent stroke include checking the blood pressure and blood sugar to know personal risk factors.

“Eating a healthy balanced diet, avoid excessive salt intake, engage in moderate exercise five times a week and learn to recognise warning signs of stroke.

  • ‘Stroke becoming an epidemic’

    •Firm launches product for treatment

AN Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Kolawole Wahab, has described stroke as a disease that deserves  more public attention like others in its category.

He spoke at the launch of a  product NeuroAid, manufactured by Moleac PTE Limited, Singapore and introduced to the country by Bolar Pharmaceuticals Limited, in Ikeja, Lagos.

Speaking on Incidence of stroke cases and current treatment strategies, Dr Wahab said no day passed at the varsity’s teaching hospital without a case of stroke being recorded. The disease had become an epidemic, he said.

‘’Its epidemic is here. One in every six persons worldwide has stroke. One in six seconds dies of it. Seventeen million people experience it yearly while six million don’t survive it. We need to do something about it,’’ he warned.

Wahab, a neurologist, said there were several unreported cases of the disease, adding that while it is prevalent among elderly Whites, it is more with the Blacks who are in their productive years.

Wahab said this called for concern. He suggested use of appropriate drugs, such as NueroAids, to treat the disease and regular intake of vegetables, and undergoing exercises to prevent it.

Bolar Pharmaceuticals Managing Director Bolanle Soremekun said he brought the drug because the current treatment was inadequate. He said the product was researched for over 10 years and that it  had been okayed by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

Soremekun, a pharmacist, urged stroke patients to use it, assuring that they would see improvement in their conditions and be able to live normal lives.

‘’NeroAids enhances neurorestoration, promotes neuroplasticity, stimulates neurogenesis, neurogrowth and synptogenesis,’’ he  added.

A representative of the Lagos State Commissioner for Health Mrs Olawale Poleyi, a Director of Pharmacy at the ministry, okayed the product. ‘’It is good and safe for patients. I recommend it to them,’’ she said.

Moleac PTE Key Manager Mariela Romero announced that the firm would soon kick off a six-month clinical trial of the product in the country, enjoining clinicians to bring their patients for the programme. She assured that within three months, they would recover.

  • Stroke: Early identification of symptoms prevents loss of life – expert

A cardiologist, Dr Afolabi Akinkunmi, on Sunday in Lagos said that early identification of risk factors of stroke remained the best way of preventing the life threatening illness.
Akinkunmi, President, Association of Residents Doctors (ARD), Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that stroke was also known as a cerebrovascular accident.
According to him, the risk factors of stroke include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking as well as advancement in age and heart valve disease.
He said: “Stroke occurs when a part of the brain loses its blood supply to a part of the body; blood is deprived of that area and brain cells control stops working.
“A stroke is a medical emergency which can happen to anyone; however, the older you are, the higher the risk and stroke can lead to death or permanent disability.
“When the signs of stroke appear, time is of the essence to diagnose it because the longer a stroke remains unrecognised and un-treated, the longer brain cells are deprived of oxygen-rich blood.
“As such, it is important to identify the signs and risk factors, in order to prevent stroke.’’
On the symptoms of stroke, the cardiologist said there may be no warning signs of a stroke until it occurs.
“That is why high blood pressure, one of the risk factors for stroke, is called the silent killer.
“Other symptoms like speech, vision, balance, and coordination loss, helps the health care professionals locate the part of the brain that has stopped working,’’ he said.
According to him, strokes are also often described based on the function of the body that is lost, as well as by the area of the brain that is affected.
The cardiologist also spoke on the most common treatment to administer on a stroke patient.
“Drug therapy with blood thinners, airways breathing and circulation to make the patient breathe are recommended.
“Also, ensuring that the patient gets adequate blood pressure is a common treatment for someone that has stroke,’’ he said. (NAN)
