What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger

The first time I heard the song, Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You) by Kelly Clarkson, I couldn’t help but shake my head in agreement and reflect on how true the song lyrics are about my experience some months earlier.

This time last year I was recovering from a major illness that I could have died from.

At a stage, I couldn’t stand on my feet. I had to be carried from my bed to go to the toilet.

I was hospitalised and had to go through rounds of a major medical procedure.

By God’s grace, I survived and one year after I am stronger in many ways with testimonies of what God has enabled me to accomplish.

On my sick bed, I responded to an application for a one-week Journalism Bootcamp training in Washington and was selected. I was in Washington in June with some colleagues at the Center for Strategic and International Studies for the programme sponsored by Bloomberg.

I was also in Kenya for the  World Association for Christian Communication, Africa Region Consultation in  August.

On my sick bed, I accepted to be a mentor on a media support programme for three months. The contract will be a year-long in December.

Before my sickness, I was teaching part-time at only Nigeria Institute of Journalism, Lagos. Now I also teach at the Mass Communication department of Yaba College of Technology.

I was working on a book about my unforgettable media training experience at Thomson Foundation, Cardiff in 1998 before I fell sick. The book has now been published.

Another book titled Our Punch Years by 38 former staff of The Punch newspaper which I edited will also be launched in December.

To God be the glory, two of my children got married this year and my daughter who married earlier made me a grandfather with a baby girl who has a very testimonial name, Arireoluwa ( We received God’s blessings).

I thank my family members, friends, colleagues and associates who rallied around and supported me to pull through.

I appreciate all the prayers, best wishes and financial support.

     God has indeed been faithful.

Whatever one is going through, as long as one is alive, it’s better to think more of what God can enable one to do instead of thinking of dying. Once there is life as the popular saying goes, there is hope.

There will be moments when it will seem it is all over, but the will to live is crucial instead of lapsing into depression.

It takes God’s grace to survive being critically sick. I know people who were not sick when I was and have died. When I remember my days in the hospital I shudder about the state of health care in the country. I remember people who could not afford the drugs recommended for them or pay the discharge fees.

I recall how there were not enough medical personnel to attend to patients and just thank God for his grace.

The quote What doesn’t kill you19th-century makes you stronger is said to have come from an aphorism of the 19th century German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche which is generally used as an affirmation of resilience. It’s indeed apt for the various trying times we may have to go through once in a while.

I can’t but agree more with Kelly Clarkson’s song:

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger

    Stand a little taller

    Doesn’t mean I’m lonely when I’m alone

What doesn’t kill you makes a fighter

    Footsteps even lighter

    Doesn’t mean I’m over ’cause you’re gone

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, stronger

    Just me, myself, and I

  • Stronger, more focused Ohanaeze Ndigbo emerging, says Nwodo

The President-General of Oha Na Eze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief John Nwodo, sad yesterday that the organisation  has been able to positively and vigorously discharge its responsibilities in the last two years. “Within these two years, we have, to the glory of God, made moderate contributions to the re-jigging of Igbo leadership and the leveraging of Igbo issues in Nigeria,” Nwodo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He listed some of the  achievements as restoration of the dignity of the Igbo across the world. He added:“We have injected a new impetus into the promotion of Igbo language, culture and heritage.

“We have also embarked on the establishment and promotion of Oha Na Eze Ndigbo activities at local, national and diaspora levels.” The president-general also said that the body had built synergy with affiliate groups such as the Igbo Delegates Assembly, the Igbo World Assembly, the World Igbo Congress,Aka Ikenga, Izu Umunna, Njiko Umunna, Igbo Media Forum, among others. He said that the group has engaged in building of bridges with other ethnic nationalities in Nigeria. “The deft and diplomatic handling of potentially explosive issues that could have snowballed into national conflagrations is also testimony to our service to Igboland.

  • ‘Oyo APC is united, stronger’

An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain  and Federal House of Representatives aspirant, Chief Shina Abiola Peller, has  debunked claims that the party in Oyo State is factionalized.

Speaking at the flag-off of his aspiration to represent the Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency, Peller said APC is united and stronger than ever. He urged Nigerians to ignore the rumour as such news is only being circulated by mischief makers.

“I don’t believe there are factions within APC in Oyo State, what I believe and preach is that, we are as strong as we are united and we are as weak as we are divided. I know the noise about factions and division is to weaken our strength as a party and confuse us as a people.

Therefore, I will never ever in my life entertain any faction. APC is one in Oyo State and we will do everything within our power to make sure that unity is maintained,” he said.

“My people know my worth and my achievements. The young people of Nigeria are the most powerful single block in the country. We would not allow ourselves to be used by people who do not have our interest at heart,” he stated. In his words, the Executive Chairman, Itesiwaju Local Government of Oyo State, Mr. Niyi Adeagbo noted that Shina Peller’s declaration and the wealth of experience he is bringing into politics will set a high standard for 2019 political aspirants in Oyo State.

  • ‘Nigeria’s economy growing bigger, stronger’

    ‘Nigeria’s economy growing bigger, stronger’

Binatone Nigeria Managing Director Mr. Prasun Banerjee, in this interview with TOBA AGBOOLA, speaks on how the company is surviving despite the tough economy. He talks about his brand and the innovations targeted at winning consumers.

As a brand, what has your experience been like in Nigeria?

It has been a wonderful thing. Although, last year was a little bit difficult, but we were able to cope and stabilise. I will say that we have come out of it and that is why you can see many good products being introduced into the market. We have a long term strategy and that is what has helped us. The same thing with the country. The government has put in place long term strategy and this will help the economy.

Also, we have been in Nigeria for the past 40 years and we will be celebrating 60 years this year, globally. We have learnt how to keep our cost low so that our products can be affordable, with high quality. We ensure that what we import is of good quality, with two years warranty. So, our aim is to create good value for money. We have a trusted brand in Nigeria for well over four decades. Over the years, we have identified that Africans, particularly Nigerians, like style. They are proud of their homes and want the most beautiful things to take a pride of place in their living rooms. They like practicality, advanced technology, unquestionable quality and of course, an attractive price.

How has the Federal Government’s policies on imported goods affected you?

We don’t have problem with the government policy as regards regulations. The only problem we have is the delay at the Apapa Port. This also caused delay for us and you know one needs to pay for demurrage at the end of the whole thing. But, the government is already addressing this challenge. Efforts are being initiated for improving ease of doing business and we are quite satisfied with the progress the Federal Government  is making to ensure a conducive business atmosphere.

Government has come up with the procurement policy that says expatriates should not be used for any skill that can be sourced locally. How are you responding to this?

Absolutely, we are doing that. We have very limited expatriates only wherever required, basically the Managing Director. Across all our  products and divisions, we have locals running the business.

What is your expansion plan and what are the challenges associated with such efforts?

We will be opening another assembly in the next two weeks. We want to go into various categories of products and of course, with innovation. In order to expand, one needs to invest, get space in the showroom, and in order to get this share of space, they need to do visibility exercises in terms of product display and demonstration. We have demonstrators, who we train on a regular basis on key features of the products and how to handle and sell them. Some merchants are our first point of contact with the customers. The trained demonstrators are one of the touch points that we have. In terms of availability, we were limited to certain class of retailers, now we have started expanding our retail network. We only had a few supermarkets and retailers in Alaba, but now we have big retail shops across Nigeria.

We are working with the top retailers in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja. The second touch point we have is in terms of the display. The customer gets to have a touch and feel of the product. He gets it near to his house; he does not have to travel far to get the product. So, our products are available in every supermarket and top retailers across the 36 states and the FCT. Abuja looks after the entire Central and North; Port Harcourt looks after the East; Onitsha looks after Onitsha and Enugu and Lagos looks after Lagos and the Southwest. We have a service centre that is well equipped with trained engineers to take care of consumers even when they have complications beyond the two years covered by the warranty.

During this process of expansion, have you observed a need to branch into the hinterland?

What we are doing is to expand step by step.  Once we see that a certain market has potential, we open a branch there. Onitsha was big for us; our next target is Kano or Kaduna to cover the entire North. We have a vast team of people here. I would like to also point out that all the fans that you see here are assembled in Nigeria. We have an assembly unit here in Nigeria and we are planning to assemble some other items here as well. We have given employment to many local people and we have also done good business and generated revenue for the government.

How are you coping with competition, especially from new brands that are springing up?

Competition will always be there. Whenever there is a demand for a category, there will always be competition. But we believe that we give good value for money in proposition. We give a product, which is affordable, has value for money and at the same time, gives peace of mind. Our core philosophy is to try and get the product across a wide spectrum of the society at very affordable price. We don’t just give value for money; we also give value to many. We are available, pan Nigeria and one of our strengths is giving the consumer peace of mind.

One of the ways we do that is by placing two-year warranty on each of our products. We’re already dominant in cooling products for the home, we felt the pulse of the consumer to produce the world’s first 2-in-1 Music Fan. We are market leader in fans and have an assembly unit here. We are also looking at assembling other kitchen appliance products and also help the government to accelerate its made-in-Nigeria initiative.

How are you responding to the demand for products that meet the energy challenges of the Nigerian environment?

To take care of the energy challenges, we have rechargeable fans and we will be launching more fans with rechargeable capacity. We know that this is a challenge in Nigeria and there is an opportunity there. So, we are one of the pioneers of rechargeable fans in Nigeria.

Are you also looking at making fans that could use solar energy?

We have another company, which is based outside the United Kingdom (UK) and which does that. Discussion is going on but there is no product right now that is commercially available to take care of that challenge. But I am sure that if there are driverless cars, there should also be solar fans.

How would you compare your market shares in Nigeria with the UK and other African countries?

Nigeria is a very huge market filled with a young population. Nigeria is one of our home countries. It is a huge opportunity for us that our fans are coveted in every household in Nigeria. Our products are well accepted here in Nigeria. We are not premium products, we give value for money and value to the many products. They are products, which the middle class will always like to buy. For instance, Nigeria is the second biggest appliance market in Africa (after South Africa).

All top international brands have strong presence in the market. Market is predominantly for mid and lower end products across all product categories. Of course, the Nigeria electronic market has always been doing great and remains a major market for Binatone to continue to explore. As far as Nigeria is concern, we are introducing very innovative products. We have launched many products and we still intend to launch. In short, there is big market in Nigeria.

Which new products are you bringing to the Nigerian electronics market?

Binatone has recently launched its innovative Tower Music Fan. Binatone’s new Music Fan brings all of this in its new product offering – the Binatone Tower Fan with digital music. The audio is available via Bluetooth to play any pre-loaded or streamed music from any smartphone and it also allows audio to be played via USB, SD Card, or even a 3.5mm audio. A stunning tower fan with a built-in digital audio system that will reclaim that nostalgic place in the home that first radios once held. The innovation we have experienced in the past two to three decades is unprecedented and what we can achieve with technology is becoming limitless, and this puts a larger than ever onus on product development teams to be able to focus and deliver truly meaningful innovations. Our product is unique, offering for the consumer. Two essential products in one saving valuable space in the home, the Binatone Music Fan is truly destined to be the new centre piece of any home with its style, music and coolness.

How does the company hope to impact positively on the Nigerian economy?

Despite the recession we have been growing in business, thanks to our product innovation and keeping our prices low. We have contributed both to the Nigerian exchequer as well as providing jobs to talented and meritorious Nigerians. Apart from direct employment, we also give a lot of indirect employment through the various agencies we hire, which assist us in our business development.

How are you tackling counterfeiting of your products?

Whenever you have genuine products, fakes will be present. So, it is something we have to work on. We have been working with Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) in identifying and destroying fakes and taking the perpetrators to court. Some cases are still in court. What we do is that whenever we see any product being converted to a fake, we try to exit that model and launch a new model.  We try to keep one step ahead of the fakers. I advise customers to buy from authorised agents and distributors of our products and from leading electronic outlets and supermarkets where there are no fakes.

How is this impacting on your bottom-line?

It is not really affecting our bottom line because as I said, we also try to stay a step ahead of the fakes. It is not really a big threat.

Do you have challenges bringing in your raw materials?

Initially, most manufacturers had that challenge, but in the last two months, there have been changes. Foreign exchange has been readily available and relatively stable. There is big hope for manufacturing in this country.  I think once the forex gets available freely, markets will again bounce back and boom. I don’t have too much to complain about in terms of bringing in raw materials because we are getting good support.

What are you doing differently from others?

We are not doing anything extraordinary. I am not a magician. I will say God is guiding us to go on the right direction. But one thing I know is that, when you produce quality goods, you don’t have to show off. Consumers themselves will determine what the market of the products should be. If I give you my products and you enjoy using them, then I think you will become my customer. If you buy a product and you are not able to use it, will you buy it a second time? The answer is no.

How has it been managing Binatone?

I have been managing the affairs of Binatone Nigeria for one and half years. During this time, we have been able to do good business. Although, there have been some economic challenges, but Binatone as I said earlier is a well-known British brand that has been in Nigeria in the last 40 years. It started with electronics and over a period of many years, it shifted its product offerings to fans, kitchen appliances, power products like UPS and stabilisers. We are leaders in fans. We have a wide range of fans. We recently introduced a tower fan with a Bluetooth speaker, which means that if you switch on your fan, you can pair your phone to the Bluetooth speaker and listen to music. The purpose is to launch this one of a kind product that is not available anywhere. We are happy that we are launching it in Nigeria for the first time.

What are the things that drive you as a businessman?

It is God. We are all guided by God. Every step we have taken has been guided by God. We have the faith that you can achieve anything you set out to do through God’s help. It is also our belief that you don’t ask your country what your country will do for you. You ask yourself what you can do for your country.  We make sure that we do our part. We belong to the country and it is important that we play our part.

  • PDP’ll emerge stronger, says Jonathan

    PDP’ll emerge stronger, says Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has declared that the PPDP will become solid after  Saturday’s convention.

Speaking to reporters yesterday after a visit to Rivers State Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike at the Government House Port Harcourt, the former president said an elected National Working Committee would set in motion  the preparation for the 2019 elections.

He said: “God willing, we will go through the National Convention and the party will become solid.

”You know we have a Caretaker Committee.  When you have a Caretaker Committee, you are not as strong as a fully elected chairman.  The party passed through some challenges.  Luckily for us, we have passed through  that phase with the pronouncement of the Supreme Court “.

”We want to formally elect the officials of the party that will lead the party to the 2019 elections.  I am very hopeful that on the 9th of December we will elect our leaders “.

He described Wike as “one of the best governors in terms of commitment, in terms of putting structures on ground, in terms of coming up with creative policies.

”He met certain structures, he has improved on them and he has built new roads and infrastructure.  I was even asked to come and commission one of the roads. That is why people call him Nr. Projects. He has been accepted by Nigerians as a performing governor “.

The former president thanked Governor Wike and the Rivers State Executive Council for attending  the funeral of his brother-in-law at Okrika.

  • ‘Lagos APC stronger with Obanikoro’

The Chairman of Lagos Island East Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Mr Kamal Bashua, yesterday described the defection of Senator Musiliu Obanikoro to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a welcome development.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Obanikoro, a former minister under the Goodluck Jonathan administration, left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC on Saturday in Lagos.

He was received by party faithful, including APC state Chairman, Chief Henry Ajomale, and other APC chieftains.

Bashua told NAN in Lagos that Obanikoro’s defection to APC was one of the best things to have happened to the party, especially in his Lagos Island constituency.

The council chief described Obanikoro as a great mobiliser, an experienced and accomplished politician, whose defection will strengthen the party at all levels.

He said residents of Lagos Island, where Obanikoro once served as council chairman, were elated to receive the politician back to their fold.

Bashua said: “We are happy to receive this great politician back to the APC. We are particularly happy in Lagos Island, his base, that he is joining forces with the APC to further render service to the people.

“He is no doubt a popular and an accomplished politician. His coming is a great plus as it would make the party stronger.”

  • 45 Year Old Banker Reveals His Secret of Lasting 25minutes during Sex and Getting Stronger Erections without using Viagra!

45 Year Old Banker Reveals His Secret of Lasting 25minutes during Sex and Getting Stronger Erections without using Viagra!

My name is Dave Taidi, and I will be sincere with you some months back, my marriage almost crashed and became a sexless marriage…

all because of my inability to perform during sex like a real man

Let me tell you what really happened:

My wife and I have been happily married for about some years ago, but our sex life was disappointing.

The major reason was due to the problem of releasing too quick during sex.

Sometimes within 40seconds of penetrating my wife’s vagina, I would look down and see that I am already releasing my sperm all over her.

During foreplay with my wife like caressing her, or kissing her… I would notice that suddenly I have poured out my semen.

But you know the worse part?

Several times before sex, I was unable to get an erection that could last even 1 minute. And my manhood would just fall and be unable to rise again.

It was embarrassing and shameful thing to behold because sex with my wife was so boring and always ended within 2minutes.

At first, my wife was very supportive so I started trying several drugs from pharmacy, using sprays and depressants… just so I could get an erection or even last say 5minutes during sex, but it all came to nothing.

    My condition became much terrible.

At a point, I thought that this condition was spiritual, I contacted my pastor and I started praying and fasting but no changes in my body system… so I gave up on that.
The breakthrough finally came when I ran into one of my ex-girlfriend that we were very close during my university days.

During one of our encounters, she dropped the bombshell. She jokingly asked me…

‘Are you now a strong man on bed or you still release even
    before the show starts?”

I was embarrassed from her question.

But from the look on my face, she already knew that I was still suffering from the problem.

I explained my story to her that my condition was still the same thing and how it was almost tearing my marriage apart.

My ex-girlfriend almost moved to tears and told me that my poor sexual performance in bed was the main reason why she broke up with me and told me to move on because she could not stand it anymore.

But surprisingly instead of mocking me like she used to do, she gave me the contact of a men health specialist that helped her fiancée to cure him of the same sex related problem I was experiencing.

At first, I was skeptical and later on talked with my wife and we decided to try the men health specialist.

The Men health specialist gave me a natural supplement (NAFDAC approved) that contains 50 capsules, to be used twice daily as a curative measure for my quick ejaculation and weak erection issues.

Truth be told, on the 5th day of using the herbal supplement, I noticed that my erections became stronger and harder in the morning when I woke up.

Before, I used to wake up and my manhood would just be like that without any erection… like a dead manhood.

But that day, it was different. I had much stronger
erection without any stress at all.

I continued using the capsules for 3more days. My wife and I decided to have sex, and I did not release the normal time before of less than 1minute.

Instead, we made love and had sex for good 15minutes before I released my sperm.

But even with that, my sexual stamina all through was so much and my wife was unable to stand up immediately after the sex.

My wife was overjoyed and she confessed that I have
never handled her that way in bed ever
    since we got married.

She praised me that during the sex, I performed like a strong, young guy in his early twenties.

I was still in much doubt, so I decided to give the same capsules to my very close friend that was complaining about his quick release issue and watery sperm.

After 7days, he too came back again that his condition has improved and he was lasting 20minutes plus in bed with a much stronger erections.

  • Lawmakers seek united, stronger Nigeria

Some members of the Lagos State House of Assembly yesterday advocated a more peaceful, more united and stronger Nigeria.

In their Eid-el-Fitr messages, the lawmakers said prayers for the peace, unity and progress of the country should not end after Ramadan.

According to them, no country can develop in an atmosphere of acrimony, ill feeling, discord and general insecurity.

Mr Segun Olulade, representing Epe Constituency II in the Assembly, said no country could achieve greatness while in disarray.

“As Muslims all over the world mark the end of Ramadan with the Eid-el-Fitr celebration, I want to call on Nigerian Muslims to seize the opportunity to pray for continued unity in the country.

“I urge Muslims in the country to use the occasion of the celebration to ask God for continued peace, unity and progress,’’ he said.

Olulade, the Chairman, House Committee on Health Services, urged Nigerians across ethnic divides to shun all forms of acrimonious and unfriendly tendencies as well as ethnic selfishness capable of undermining the unity of Nigeria.

He called on every citizen to shun hate speeches and divisive tendencies, advising Nigerians to join hands with the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to build a peaceful, strong and united Nigeria.

Olulade added: “For the country to quickly recover from its current challenges and start moving in a positive direction, Nigerians must be ready to display high level self-denial, sacrifice and patriotism.

“Nigerians should not stop praying, supplication and sacrifice for the country toward finding solutions to our challenges.”

He urged the Muslims to use the lessons and virtues of love, tolerance and perseverance imbibed during the holy month of Ramadan in every aspect of their daily living in order to move the country forward.

Also speaking, Mr Olusola Shokunle, representing Oshodi-Isolo Constituency I in the Assembly, said national unity remained cardinal to moving the country forward.

Shokunle, the Chairman, House Committee on Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, applauded the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, for the efforts he has been putting into ensuring a united Nigeria.

He said: “As Muslims across Nigeria celebrate Eid-el-Fitr today, we should pray for the unity of Nigeria.

“I must praise the Acting President for the consultations and peace talks he has held across board to ensure that the country remains united.

“The unity of Nigeria is non-negotiable because it is only through a united Nigeria that development can take place. Our division will be a terrible thing for us.”

He described the peace meetings held by the Acting President as steps in the right direction, especially at a time the country is desirous of purposeful leadership that would keep the country on course.

The lawmaker urged traditional and religious leaders to play their roles toward stabilizing the country politically, socially and economically.

“Our traditional and religious leaders have serious role to play in the Nigeria project in all ramifications of our live as they command much respect from their followers.

“I will urge them to use this commanding strength to campaign for a stable and united country,” the lawmaker added.

  • Nigeria stronger together, says Guild of Editors

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has called for restraint and tolerance among Nigerians, stressing that the country remains stronger together.

It stated this yesterday in a communiqué of the second quarterly meeting of its Standing Committee held last Friday in Lagos.

The statement signed by NGE President FunkeEgbemode and General Secretary Victoria Ibanga condemned “the hate speeches from different sections of the country” and urged Nigerians to ignore those agitating for the country’s dismemberment.

It said: “The Guild notes that those sowing seeds of discord should realise that they are not just destroying the dreams of the nation’s founding fathers but the progress we have made over the years as a nation; their actions have the capacity to alter the destiny of Nigeria negatively.

“The Guild reminds the hate agents that as major stakeholders in the Nigerian Project, editors and journalists fought for the enthronement of the current democratic dispensation, with some paying the supreme price, to birth a constitutional government.”

The NGE lamented that elders from different parts of the country “kept quiet for too long, which allowed the youths to take over the socio-political space and brought the nation to the present situation.”

It urged them to show more interest in national affairs.

“The Guild also urges Nigerians to ignore those agitating for the dismemberment of the country and to go about their businesses without fear or let, and focus more on repositioning the country for present and future generations.

“The Guild appreciates the firm and decisive intervention of the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, which has calmed the situation and urges the government to do more.”

The NGE noted that despite the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris’ order for the arrest of those making hate speeches, “no commensurate action has been taken”.

It urged the Police to be more responsive and pragmatic.

However, the Guild hailed the Police for the arrest of the kidnap kingpin, ChukwudiDumemeOnuamadike and other kidnappers “and urges that they should do more to ensure the release of the abducted pupils of Igbonla Model College, Epe in Lagos State, who have been missing for more than three weeks now”.

The Guild condemned the “overzealousness of operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and other security agencies against the media. At all times, duties come with deep responsibilities that must be upheld”.

  • Why private varsities are stronger

In 1948, the university education started in Nigeria when the first university was established in Ibadan. The University of Ibadan came to being after Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) was established as the first tertiary institution.

In the wake of the birth of Third Republic in 1999, the deregulation of the economy saw the emergence of private universities. The financial crisis facing states of the federation encouraged the establishment of the private universities, which are increasing till date.

It should be observed that the quest to give more choices to the ever-increasing number of admission seekers necessitated the establishment of private universities. Since then, there have been about 60 approved private universities in the country.

Just like the public universities, private tertiary institutions in Nigeria are also being ranked and reviewed annually. Presently, on the table of ranking, some private universities like Benson Idahosa University, Babcock University and Covenant University have better standing among universities, both public and private.

No parent would like to compromise quality for names. Many have augured that private universities are expensive, but the truth is that good life is not expensive but it is the creation that is expensive. These schools give you value for your money; education shouldn’t be so cheap.

Former president of Harvard University, Derek Bok, famously said: “If you think education is expensive try ignorance.”

We should also know that the fees of public-owned tuition have increased and are not as cheap as they used to be.

Most of these private varsities have decided to deploy the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) to impart knowledge on students, while many public-owned institutions lag behind in this respect. Students, who attend private schools, are easily linked with mentors and research groups as done in many globally-acclaimed schools, but most of our public schools cannot do this.

Public universities brag with the number of doctorates and professors in their employment, forgetting that most of these highly-rated academics still go on sabbatical in private-owned schools because of sophisticated equipment and infrastructure.

At academic and social competitions, private varsities are earning more honour and accolades, compared to public-owned schools. At the sixth International Humanitarian Law Moot Court competition recently held at Lagos State University (LASU), a private school, Benson Idahosa University in Benin emerged winner amidst stiff competition from nine public universities.

In 2011, Benson Idahosa University also emerged second runner- up in the West Africa University games held at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) in Kwara State. Again, last week at the 25th NUGA, Benson Idahosa University, came third position with a total of 26 medals, defeating 55 state and federal school.

At the just concluded maiden edition of Technology and Innovation Expo, Covenant University finished in third position in the tertiary institutions’ category, defeating 64 public-owned tertiary institutions at the event organised by the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology.

Many parents prefer to enroll their children in private schools because of incessant strike actions, unstable academic calendar, cult activities, low staff-students relationship, insecurity and corruption that have befallen many of these public universities. How can one sing the gospel of public universities when these are the agony faced by students? No doubt, there are a lot of nice angles to government-owned universities, but most are far-fetched.

In private universities, students have comfortable environment to learn, because they believe that a favorable environment is very vital for assimilation of knowledge. These people tend to boast of more infrastructure and state-of-the-art facilities for learning.

In public school there is a daily struggle for conducive environment to learn. There you see overcrowded and unventilated classrooms. Students are made to stand for several hours during lectures. How can one learn or think in such unfriendly environment, with so much noise and disorderliness? Not forgetting, that one of the major functions of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically.

Another phenomenon that is enjoyed in private institution is the excellent student-lecturer relationship. In a university setting, there is a great diversity in terms of socio-cultural, political, religious and racial backgrounds among students and lecturers. A healthy relationship between lecturers and students does influence students’ academic, personal and social integration into higher education. In private universities, there is a tight bond between the students and lecturers leading to an increase in academic productivity
