“I came from India to study as an international student. Students go to an agency for advice on how to apply and I did the same.I  wanted to study in London, I wanted to live in London. That was very clear to me, but they (the agency)found me a place at the University of Aberystwyth in Wales. It  was a beautiful university, a nice city, but in the middle of nowhere.

‘‘When you are in the London mindset and then you arrive and realise it’s a five-hour drive away… I was really disappointed. The agency even said to me ‘you can actually live in London and go to Wales every day’.”

According to him,the poor advice, inaccurate information forced him to research and visit universities in London.and establish Edvoy.

Ajayi hails Tinubu for student’s loan

Former board member, Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO), Hon. Chief Nicholas Adekunle Chidiebere Ajayi, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the introduction of students’ education loan.

Speaking at the biennial inter-house sports competition of Ageke Primary School, Ejigbo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Lagos State, said the policy was a great step in the right direction.

“The President Tinubu knows the importance of education in every nation, as bedrock for development. During his administration as governor of Lagos State, the people enjoyed free education from primary to university level. Also he has given special attention to the education sector and that can be found in the 2024 budgetary. I want to thank him so much for that allocation to the education sector.

“The benchmark for budgetary allocation to education in developing countries like us has not been met but I know very well this present government has taken steps in the right direction and we as citizens are asking for more in future budgets. A remarkable instance is the student education loan and it is a welcome development. It is practiced in other countries, especially in the developed countries and we want to appeal to administrators and those who are going to overseas affairs not to destroy it, because it is something Nigerians have been yielding for a very long time and God has given Nigerians the opportunity through this present president.

This development will go a long way to produce the required manpower needed to move the economy and nation forward,” he said.

In her remark, Head Teacher of the school, Mrs. Victoria Idowu, said that their inter-house sports competition is geared towards fulfilling one of the cardinal objectives of the school curriculum which is to engage the pupils in extra –curriculum activities as expectedly by the Ministry of Education.

A non-governmental organisation, MaroonSquare, has stressed the need to reposition student activism in the country.

During its annual roundtable at the Federal College of Education Technical, Yaba,  Lagos, tagged, ‘The Nigerian Students Movement: 1982-1992’, the organisation noted that there are continuous attempts to re-organise the students’ union movement in the shape that it was before its ideological bankruptcy from the late 90s till date. The  programme was supported by the Ross Luxemburg Foundation, a non governmental organisation.

Keynote speaker Hauwa Mustapha, a  Development Economist, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), said  student activism must reach beyond the narrow focus of local interests, adding that  increased energy must be directed towards global issues – issues that address our commonality the world over as humankind and which have effects on our well-being and those of future generations.

Mustapha, who was represented by Lagos Coordinator,  Amilcar Cabral Ideological School, Sheriff Sholagbade noted that ‘the calamity’ that befell  students union movement is a part of an organised global war of capitalism against socialism, against people’s power and against collective struggle.

She said: “While advocating for an overhaul of the education content, we must begin to collaborate to contribute to infusing critical debates and learning circle in our secondary and tertiary institutions. As the world becomes globalised, student activism must reach beyond the narrow focus of local interests. Instead, increased energy must be directed towards global issues – issues that address our commonality the world over as humankind and which have effects on our well-being and those of future generations. Such issues include; climate change, migration, trafficking in people, afrocentricism and free market, governance, democracy, gender and inclusions.

Policy Director of MaroonSquare, Onyeisi Chiemeke, stressed the need for  training of union leaders, adding that it was essential for females to participate  in unionism. She flayed poor moral standards  and indiscipline in students’ unionism, being fuelled by excessive  lust power and money.

Editor of Youth Digest Magazine, Yomi Gidado, in a paper on ‘Voices, representation and the dynamics of students unionism: An interrogation of the activities of Students’ Union in Ondo State University in Ado-Ekiti (1986-1992)’, underscored the importance of  political education and re-orientation of SUG leaders to align with the original aim of unionism  and activism on campus. Gidado, who was once a student union leader, said unionism these was longer what it used to be. He said true leaders no longer existed on campuses.

He urged students to be effective watchdog of the Nigerian state and its activities on the global political scene.

No student died in weekend’s stampede at UNICAL, says varsity

Director of the Center for General Studies, University of Calabar, Prof. Takim Asu Ojua, has debunked reports that students died in a stampede that happened during a CBT examination.

Prof. Ojua also confirmed that all 21 students taken to two different hospitals have been stabilised, with majority of them discharged and returned home.

According to a statement by Prof. Ojua, the examination of November 11 started smoothly, with the third batch almost finishing, before some students, who either missed the exams, were not scheduled to write in the morning, or were not even part of the examination, became unruly, uncontrollable, impatient, defiant, and tried to break into the venue forcefully.

He added: “As a result of an unprecedented surge by a mass of students, the gate leading to the venue of the CBT Center was pushed down, causing a stampede. Some members of staff and students salvaged the situation and rushed the casualties to the University Medical Center and the Teaching Hospital.

“14 students were rushed to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, and seven were taken to the Medical Center for emergency treatment. And, before 5pm, more than 10 were discharged and taken home, remaining just a few who are to be further examined, though they are fully stabilised and recuperated.”

Prof. Ojua further explained that the fully equipped CBT Center has the capacity to conduct larger examinations such as the last UTME (Jamb) which had a far higher number of students than those sitting for Gss Exams.

“The examination was scheduled in batches, with specific faculties scheduled to write on stipulated time and dates. Unfortunately, some students refused to abide by the timetable, and decided to gate-crash, resulting in the avoidable incident.

“The essence of the introduction of the GSS CBT exams is to ensure fast service delivery, easy access to examination and results, and to reduce the stress on students during examination periods.

Stories and narratives making rounds on social media about the number of casualties, deaths, lack of venues and accommodation for the exams, insufficient computers etc, are untrue and does not reflect the situation on ground, considering the fact that GSS CBT examination has been ongoing since 2020.

“The Management and staff of the Center regrets this ugly incident, which was avoidable, had the students kept to the scheduled timetable, not destroy the canopies and maintained the queues as instructed,” he added.

Prof. Ojua added that the exams has been postponed until further notice, and that students were free to travel back home.
