  • Recall Nigerian Law School student

SIR: We of the Legal Education Rights Agenda, a national campaigning organization of law faculty students, law graduates, lawyers and public interest-inclined persons hereby write to demand the recall of Kayode Bello, a student of the Abuja campus of the Nigerian Law School, who was unjustly expelled from the campus of the Nigerian Law School, Bwari, Abuja, after he allegedly had an argument with a fellow student.

We condemn the  undemocratic manner in which the  graduate of University of Ibadan, Oyo State was reportedly bundled out of the school’s library by law school officials and policemen attached to the Bwari Police Station on the day he was expelled. We condemn the actions of the management of the Nigerian Law School in the poor handling of the complaint of Bello over the poor state of welfare conditions in the Abuja Campus of the Nigerian Law School which is a reflection of similar poor state of welfare on the other five campuses of the Nigerian Law School.

We hold that the   Secretary to the Council of Legal Education, Elizabeth Max-Uba, should have reacted in a pro-active manner over his complaint over the leakage of the sewage pipe in his room’s toilet other than the strong arm tactics the school management. We hold that leakage of water system in rooms in the hostels of Nigerian Law School is symptomatic of the poor welfare conditions in most the campuses despite the huge fees students cough out to undertake the programme.

We also condemn the poor handling of the incident of March 15, which led to Kayode Bello’s expulsion. We condemn the culture of seat reservation in an institution that is meant to be a training ground for fighters for egalitarianism.

We reject the accusations of the Nigerian Law School that Kayode Bello is inciting students against the school management based on his correct and regular complaints on the poor state of welfare on the campus.

We condemn the poor fate that Kayode Bello was exposed to by the management unto which he was deprived of a bed space in the Law School campus and he was forced to be sleeping in the open room.

We condemn the action of the  Chief  Security Officer who  led his team to  give Kayode  Bello a letter of expulsion to sign on July 21, which he  rejected upon which he  called for reinforcement and  dragged the poor boy out of the library and took him for detention at  the Bwari Police Station.

We call for the immediate recall of Kayode Bello in order to sit for his Bar Examinations, an immediate improvement of welfare conditions in all campuses of the Nigerian Law School in order for students to adequately prepare for the Bar Examination.

She needs N12million to undergo a kidney transplant.

Her mother, Mrs Funmilayo Ologun, said Love had not been very healthy since she was a child.

She was always falling sick. However, after the age of three, she didn’t fall sick for while until she got into secondary school.

“She has always been on and off the hospital bed, but after she was three, she became more stable. She was stable till she got into secondary school. They kept calling us, almost every month that we should come and take care of her because she has been admitted. The doctors don’t really tell me what was wrong anytime I go to the hospital. The doctors treat, talk to her and tell me to make sure she uses her drugs every day,’’ her mother said.

Immediately after secondary school, Love secured admission into FUNNAB to study Business Administration. During her second semester examination for 300 Level  last October, she only managed to sit for her exams.

She was admitted to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, where she had been receiving treatment before. At the hospital, Love had three sessions of dialysis and was later discharged in November.

About two weeks later, Love was admitted again. ’’When she was admitted, we had already given up hope; but thank God for prayers.  Her friends also came over and donated blood for her. Later, the doctor told us  that the dialysis machine was not functioning well, and referred us to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu.

“On our way to the hospital in December, she collapsed at the gate of OOUTH. I was so scared, I was just shouting. We took her  to the Emergency Ward and she was stabilised. It  was there the  doctor that told us she needs kidney transplant and that we would need between N8million and N12million for it.The doctor told us not to be quiet about our situation to speak up so that well-meaning Nigerians could help us and save  Love’s life ,’’ Mrs Ologun added.

The mother said anyone who wanted to help Love could contact them via   08037128147 or 08038507433.

Her colleague, Olasukanmi Babalola, who broke down in tears at the scene, said: “This would not have happened had she started her IT. But, our school is on strike, preventing many students from partaking in IT. The late Hikmat became another victim of this senseless strike.”

UNIOSUN student leads Ukraine varsity’s medical exam

A medical student of the Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Miss Oyeleye Lateefat Abiola, has emerged the overall best of the 546 final year Medical students of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University in Ukraine.

She is among the 85 medical students of UNIOSUN sponsored by the Rauf Aregbesola administration in 2012 to complete their studies at the foreign university, one of the oldest in Eastern Europe.

Abiola led other students in the examination with 95.9 per cent.

A statement yesterday by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Adelani Baderinwa, said 50 of the 85 students, including Abiola, became medical doctors after passing the Krok 2 Exams.

Baderinwa said all the 50 UNIOSUN students, who wrote the final examinations among the 546 medical students of the university, passed, from the result released earlier on Sunday.

The commissioner said the students will have their convocation on June 30.

He recalled that the students, who gained admission into UNIOSUN in 2007, would have had their ambition of becoming medical doctor cut short because of the non-availability of a medical school to further their education.

Baderinwa said the Rauf Aregbesola administration sent them to the medical school in Ukraine.

The commissioner, who congratulated the medical students on behalf of the state government, said Aregbesola had offered to assist the parents of the students to get visas to attend the convocation of the 50 students in Ukraine.

He said the remaining 35 final set of the UNIOSUN Medical students will graduate in May 2018.

  • Student commits suicide over theft allegation

Student commits suicide over theft allegation

A University of Lagos (Unilag) student has reportedly committed suicide after being accused of stealing make-up and clothes belonging to a fellow student.

Ayomide Ayibiri, a 100 level Employee Relations and Human Resources Management (ER & HRM) student, was said to have drunk an insecticide known as Sniper at her mother’s place at the weekend.

It was gathered that her fellow students at Amina Hostel called her “thief” and other unpleasant names.

Their action was said to have followed the alleged discovery of the missing items in her bag.

Her mother, described as a worker in the university, on learning of the matter, was said to have defrayed N2,000 cost of the make-up.

While following her mother home, her hostel mates were said to have booed her even more.

It was gathered that her mother returned from work and met her in critical condition.

According to Ajani Damilola, who shared the information on social media, the mother asked her what happened and she stretched her hand towards the insecticide.

“Immediately, her mum gave her palm oil but it didn’t work. She rushed her to a medical centre at Ebute-Meta, still there wasn’t favourable result. She then took her to Lagos University Teaching Hospitals (LUTH). Ayo gave up in LUTH.”

The news of her death enraged some staff and students who blamed her hostel mates for it.

A lecturer, who spoke with The Nation in confidence, urged the management to arrest and prosecutes them.

He said: “It’s a very sad incident. There’s even the possibility that she didn’t even steal the items. It could be that someone hid those things in her bag and they have pushed her to suicide.

“Her mother should have reported the matter at the Student Affairs Unit. I just hope the management would arrest all those involved and prosecute them for jungle justice.

“A proper investigation should also be carried out to ascertain what happened. If it’s discovered she didn’t steal, all those responsible should be rusticated from the institution.”

Deboye Taylor, her childhood friend and classmate, wrote: “Ayomide, my heart melts in sorrow as I have to reflect on the fact that you are gone, but there’s nothing that can be done anymore. We are all going to keep praying for you and you will forever be in our hearts. Ariyibi – this is the name we all got used to, although it is your surname but we still called you back in our kindergarten, nursery and primary school days. Even when I met you at Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), I still called you that. I’ll hold on to all those memories we shared with you.”
