KESHI TO CHAN EAGLES: Finish in style

    • Aims at third place diadem

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are not giving up hope of taking third place at the 2014 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) as they face Zimbabwe in the play-off today at the Cape Town Stadium.

After falling to fellow West Africans Ghana in the semi-final, Coach Stephen Keshi has told his boys to finish the tournament in style in the play-off.

“Losing in penalties in the semis was not good enough because we even failed to score in normal play. But we want to go all out and play good football against Zimbabwe,” he added.

While it’s the first time Nigeria play in the CHAN tournament and are happy to get as far as this stage on their debut attempt, this is also Zimbabwe’s best show after failing to get out of the Group stages in the last two editions.

Besides chasing third place and the cash prize at stake, Nigerian players Rabiu Ali and Chrisantus Ali (3 goals) and Ifeanyi Benjamin Ede (2 goals) will be out to try and take the top scorers’ prize. South Africa’s Bernard Parker still leads the scoring chart with four goals.

But the Warriors of Zimbabwe with their tight defense will not be a team to underestimate either as they have showed lots of composure and good team play in all the five ties they have played in the championship.

“I have told my players to play with lots of caution because we are facing a good Nigerian side,” said Zimbabwe Coach Ian Gorowa.

Although there have been reports of demotivation in the Zimbabwe camp because the government failed to facilitate the team with allowances, the players have continued to play their hearts out and could have a surprise for the Super Eagles.

Kudakwashe Mahahi who is much sought after by PSL teams will lead Zimbabwe together with Simba Sithole who have all netted one goal in the tournament.

  • A parade of STYLE

    A parade of STYLE

One of man’s great pleasures and obsessions is developing a sense of class that is far beyond the ordinary. Some call it style. Others simply say it is individuality. Depending on the side of the divide you may choose to pitch, style is simply doing things your way. Style defines a man. It is a badge by which he or she is recognized.  So, being stylish is purely being individualistic. Over the years, men have consciously cultivated dressing culture that tends to define their style. In the parade of Nigeria’s stylish men, KAYODE ALFRED x-rays Nigerians of various strata and standing who have carved a niche for themselves as men of style.

    PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN’S ‘Resource Control’

There have been Nigerian leaders, past and present who emerged, at one period or the other, and whose eras were largely defined by their dress culture. From the late Sir Tafawa Balewa, Dr. Nnmamdi Azikiwe, former Presidents Shehu Shagari and Olusegun Obasanjo to serving President Goodluck Jonathan, there was and there is still a consistency in their dress culture which reflected the geography of their birth.

However, with President Jonathan’s ascendancy to power he brought with him, wittingly or unwittingly, a tsunami-like ‘fashion-buzz in Nigeria called ‘Resource Control.’ In the history of Nigeria, never has a president’s dress culture captivated his subjects’ fancy like that of President Jonathan’s traditional Ijaw cultural attire. President Jonathan’s Niger-Delta attire with a bowler hat has become his trademark. While this dress code has drawn admiration from across board, the President can also be described as a marketer of his culture with his attached love of his native Ijaw attire. No wonder, it has become a fad among big boys across the country’s socio-economic and political firmament.

    MIKE ADENUGA’S love for kaftan

Dr. Mike Adenuga might be perceived in many quarters as the least visible billionaire to be sighted in high octane events. And as such, assessing his dress culture could prove a bit of a task. Adenuga’s rise to fame and fortune began at the young age of 26 in the 1970s when he was involved in the distribution of lace and other textile materials.

Perhaps this might have accounted for his penchant for kaftans of lace derivatives. Not known for adorning European three-piece suits, style for Adenuga, appears to mean freedom. With a frame described in urban language as ‘Plus Size,’ Adenuga loves to be free, as such, his love for flowing robes and kaftans is legendary.

IBIKUNLE AMOSUN and his ‘sky-scrapper’ cap

Only on rare occasions is Ogun State governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun seen in suits. But when he is in his traditional attire, he hardly does so without complementing it with his sky-scrapper cap. At every occasion he graces, his cap dwarfs even the giant among the crowd.

Right from his days in the upper chamber of the National Assembly, “SIA” (Senator Ibikunle Amosun) has evolved the ‘onilegogoro’ cap style which is fast becoming a fad in and around Ogun State. Many believe he has only continued to promote a style created by the first Executive President of Nigeria, Alhaji Shehu Aliyu Usman Shagari, and the late Chief Solomon Lar of Plateau State both of whom wore the tallest trademark cap in Nigeria’s history.

FEMI OTEDOLA’S love for ‘immaculate white’

Femi Otedola is famous for his sparkling white traditional attire. Additionally, Otedola adorns foot wears that could be said to be a collector’s item. To Femi, looking stylish comes at a cost.

    ROTIMI AMAECHI

A confident but youthful swagger driven by a trendy fashion sense, is one of the things that define the Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi. He shares the same fashion style with President Jonathan. They have both made the Niger-Delta attire an object of national fondness. Rotimi is not complete without adding his walking stick to make a statement that he is rooted in the Ijaw culture.

No matter what you adorn, once you fail the ‘cleanliness’ test, you can’t get anywhere.” Lanre wears them neat and smooth.

Akpabio ‘s wife marks 42 in style

The age of 42 usually passes without much of fanfare. But when the super rich decide to celebrate, it is bound to generate interest. That was the case with dark and lovely Ekaete Unoma Akpabio who turned 42 on Monday.

It was pay-back time for the beautiful wife of Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State, as family members and friends rallied round her to make her 42nd birthday a memorable one. But her disposition on the day pointed to the fact that she is not given to celebrating her birthdays in a very loud manner. Rather, she sees it as no more than another day in her life.

While her birthday was meant to be a low-key celebration, the presence of top dignitaries showed she is a gold fish which has no hiding place. Top-of-the-range drinks and assorted meals were served at the occasion.

The First Lady of Akwa Ibom State was simply full of excitement on that day.

WHAT is it like to be 60? Who else to ask this question if not one of the latest entrants into the Diamond Club, Mrs Yemisi Ogunleye? The Lagos businesswoman, who turned 60 on April 30, says the age signifies “maturity”.

Her Lekki Phase 1, Lagos home was thronged by dignitaries that day. It began with a thanksgiving at the All Saints Anglican Church, The Diocese of Lagos Church of Nigeria, Lekki Phase 1.

Mrs Ogunleye’s long-time friends were everywhere; ensuring guests had a nice time.

Two of them, Mrs Laide Akinrinmade and Mrs Bosede Banjo, spoke with The Nation.

Mrs Akinrimade said she and Mrs Ogunleye had been friends for over 40 years.

Their friendship became intimate because of Mrs Ogunleye’s father’s accommodative nature.

“We usually went to their house to play and Yemisi’s dad took us like his daughters; he was free with everyone and even allowed us to play inside his room,” she said.

Mrs Banjo described the celebrator as a caring woman.

  • Style and trend forecast for 2013

Style and trend forecast for 2013

CLASSINESS and style are the word that describes the dazzling range of fashion merchandise that rocked 2012. And keeping in tune with the changing styles and fads has been the essential features. The start of a New Year does not mean that the New Year fashion and trend will be all completely new. Although, there will be those distinctly new elements and those distinctly new themes, but a lot of the clothing and accessories we will be wearing in the early part of 2013 (Jan-Feb.) will be influenced by the most recent season (later part of 2012).

Given the buzz that fashion shows and new fads created in 2012, 2013 is certain to be an eventful year fashion-wise. First, we should expect designers to be daring and much more innovative in 2013. This new spirit is going to be driven by the rise in the demand for trendy fashion accessories.

Going forward, we expect to see a serious infusion of animal skin fabric and designed local print.

What to get, what to keep and what to throw away all together? These are questions we are bound to ask as we move into any new year. For 2013 the options of what to keep are manly: you simply need to know how to give those key trend pieces from last year a 2013 refresh.

Skirt fashion- fashionable skirts in 2013 will have a great deal of different variants, especially knee- length. Different materials, textures, combinations of colours and famous classical cuts will make every skirt in this season very beautiful and unique. Last year, we found inspiration in indigenous fabrics in peplum style. Indigenous fabrics like Ankara, aso oke (Net with embroidery & Alari) and Kampala were stylishly used to sew 60s, 70s and 80s type’s western dresses.

What trends do you see becoming big in 2013? For Tessy Jibodu of Zaris Fashion Academy 2013 is going to be an exciting year for the fashion industry. ‘We will be seeing a lot of glitters in fabrics and accessories, Peplums too are out with 90s pointy with metallic details, to mention a few’ she said

Ifeyinwa Shekinah Odo of house of MISIANO said local fabrics like Ankara, Tie and Dye (adire), and french lace to mention but a few are the fabric s to watch out for in 2013. She said

“watch out for more lace, Ankara prints with blings, floaty fabrics like chiffon& silk, soft organza& jersey, vintage velvet, floral& duchess satin, dry and floral cotton” According to her all these fabrics are going to be use for designing red carpet and casual wears in 2013.

“What people wear in the last quarter of 2012 will determine the fashion trend for January. There will be some changes in the first quarter of the year, new styles would emerge. Ankara sun dresses, damask jackets/blazers on jeans, Ankara gypsy dresses with sun hat, roomy tunics on pants and lots of Ankara jump shorts and jumpsuits with wide brim sun hats; and a bit of vintage inspired designs, little lace dresses…these are styles that you should watch out for and they will rock 2013 like fire”

It is certain that fashion designers will experiment with new designs judging by what happened last year, where lots of fabrics of different hues and pattern were experimented.

Fashion is never stagnant! In the area of men’s fashion, it is going to be more of striped linen fabrics, guinea brocade, Ankara, kente, lots of lace without holes and customized jackets. The female fashion is certainly going to be dominated by little dresses (baby doll dresses), smartly sown skirts and tops, Victorian gowns, tank tops, smart handbags and fashion accessories sown with Ankara Fabrics.

Ankara will still be the king even though it would continue to be mixed with other fabrics. The projection of the FADAN president Prince Akanni Oyetusi of Noble Afrik for the year is similar to that of Trend. According to him 2013 will be an interesting year for the fashion industry. The weather and the environment would be a major determinant of what the 2013 fashion trend would look like.

“Indigenous fabrics have come to stay. Today, we find out that at events, social and parties and international runways, local fabrics are the order of the day. And the acceptance is spreading daily when compared to some years back when they were seen as the fabric for the downtrodden,” he said.

In textiles watch as lace and mesh make a comeback!

*Mesh and lace fabric dresses gained more popularity both on the runway and off the stage. So, they are going to be more visible in 2013.

*Floral, animal and pastel prints will surely come back with a bang.

*Handbags will certainly get bigger and clutch purses will get trendier and longer in width.

*Craze for embellished accessories: Like it was the case last year, 2013 is going to be year where almost all fashion stuff and home decor items will be embellished with colourful beads, stones, sequins, metals and beads.

*Like it was last year, 2013 is going to be another year of tiny waist cincher (belts)

*LBD, one-shoulder, strapless dress will surely be visible
