  • Succour for Takwa Bay pupils

Relief has come the way of pupils of the Government Senior Secondary School in Takwa Bay, off Snake Island in Ikoyi, Lagos.

They have got a block of eight classrooms, courtesy of construction giant Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, to stop them from crossing rivers in boats to attend school in neighbouring towns.

Julius Berger, as part of its social responsibility, donated the classrooms to the school, under ‘Education District III.’

The building, will serve as the school’s centre of Senior Secondary education.

Speaking at the commissioning, the Chairman of Iru Local Community Development Authority, Hon. Muhideen Daramola, thanked the donors, stating that such a gesture would go a long way in developing the area and saving lives.

He said: “Students in the community had had to travel by boat, with the attendant occasional boat mishaps, to the environs to continue their senior secondary school education, after graduating from junior secondary school.”

Daramola, who restated his commitment to providing affordable and quality education to the community, implored the Ministry of Education to ensure the functionality of the school through constant intervention in every ramification.

The Consultant, Nigeria Projects of Julius Berger International, Mr Henk Rijpma, said: “When JBN was contracted to do some work in the Atlas-Cove community, it felt as part of their social responsibility to the community, it should approach the elders of the community and the LCDA chairman. It was decided that for safety of the children and to facilitate rapid development in the area, the construction of an eight-classroom block for a Senior Secondary School would be the ideal JBN contribution.”

He promised further that handing over the classrooms would not be the end of JBN’s involvement in the school, but that they would endeavour to improve on existing facilities and construct more in future.

Acting Tutor General/Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Government, Ministry of Education and Director, Personnel Matters of the District, Mrs Folusho Ajimoti, thanked JBN and promised that all efforts to facilitate and make the school immediately functional will be expedited.

She said that all personnel and infrastructural needs of the new school had been concluded, adding that the school would begin immediate operations.

The council boss further emphasised the need for strategy partnership between government and other private sector operators in providing succour for the disabled.

Osinubi added: “The physically challenged need our empathy and it will be a disservice to God and humanity if we close our eyes to their plight when we can help in our own little ways.”

On how the beneficiaries were mobilised, FDF’s founder, Abbey Paseda said the foundation works with groups in Nigeria to identify the individual needs of the physically challenged in order to meet them.

Paseda, who is based in the United Kingdom, said the foundation was working hard to build a vocational centre that would train and empower the physically-challenged individuals with grants.

One of the beneficiaries who got a wheel chair, Adekomola Taiwo, said: “I am happy for this kind gesture which has helped in rekindling my hope that we are not alone in the struggle to lead a better life in the midst of the numerous challenges facing us.”

  • Succour in health, safety management

    Succour in health, safety management

Health Safety and Environment appears abstract on the surface but it has potential of providing thousands of jobs, writes AKINOLA AJIBADE.

For job seekers, it is time to look inward and tap into opportunities around them as white collar jobs have become difficult to come by.

The situation is getting trickier as companies are either closing down or relocating to neighbouring countries where they hope to get comparative advantage.

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), in a report, said the prevailing economic condition is taking its toll on the sector as millions of people have lost their jobs. More people, it said, would join the labour market as the country continues to grapple with epileptic power supply, among other problems. It added that capacity utilisation has dropped because companies operate with a few hands.

Tower Aluminum Nigeria Plc is facing that kind of crisis. The company, in a statement, said it is facing extinction because of shortage of materials. The company said its over 1,500 direct workers would be affected by the development.

With no jobs anywhere, the unemployed are faced with the reality of creating jobs for themselves.

An area with job prospect is Health Safety and Environment (HSE). It has to do with the safety and welfare of workers. It lays emphasis on the health and ecological protection of workers and ensures that companies achieve their objectives of posting good returns on investment. It presupposes that companies operate in a friendly environment where physical and natural disasters are averted to some extent.

Introduced in the oil and gas industry decades ago to reduce the effects of effluents or oil discharges, HSE has taken a multi-disciplinary dimension. Companies have realised the need to employ HSE experts for growth.

In the past, oil and gas and maritime firms mandated their workers to get a certificate on HSE, in addition to their academic qualifications to fit into the system. They later realised that they needed skilled personnel to handle such issues. This development has opened opportunities for trainers and consultants to earn a living.

President, Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), Mr Babatunde Ogun, said there are untapped opportunities in HSE.

Ogun said the prospect of getting jobs as health and safety management experts was high, advising the unemployed to try the area.

The area, he said, has opened job windows for people, since Nigeria is one of the largest producers of oil in the world.

He said HSE has the potential to create thousands of jobs, adding that people can work on their own or with the oil companies.

Ogun said: “There are lot health, safety and environmental issues in the (Onshore and Offshore) segment of the oil industry. There are issues relating to the physical condition of oil workers, safety of the oil sites, effects of oil leakages, gas flaring, among others. These must be handled by experts. Because the oil industry is broad, different safety and health related issues do comes up daily. People working in the area of health, safety and environmental management have a wider scope of activities. They work in line with the situations on ground. They carry out maintenance jobs, ensure safety of equipment, workers and oil sites.”

Multinational oil companies, he said, have not been able to employ enough people to render HSE services, adding that more workers are needed by the companies.

He said HSE workers are needed in the banking industry, too.

“Every sector of the economy requires the services of health safety and environmental personnel. Unfortunately, such workers are not enough in Nigeria. When there are oil leakages in the industry, multinationals cover them up to escape punishments. Such things cannot happen, if there are enough local safety and environmental experts on ground. The awareness is growing. With time, more people would go into safety and health area because of its immense opportunities,” he opined.

Ogun said the government must compel foreign oil majors to comply with safety and environmental guidelines, arguing that the development would provide job opportunities for people.

An expert, and a consultant on HSE, Mr Suleiman Ikhanaede, said HSE is a promising area for graduates willing to go into it.

Ikhanaede said people must be certified before they can work in those areas. He said the training has exposed him to the rudiments of environmental and health management, arguing that people would earn a living once they can apply the right skills.

He said companies are looking for those, who can train their staff on health, safety and environmental issues, adding that trainers earn good income.

Companies, he said, are yet to give the area the desired attention, stressing that the future is bright for people that specialise in health and environmental areas.

A geo-physicist, Mr Oyetunji Balogun, said people make a lot of money through consultancy. Balogun said HSE management is broad, arguing that people can consult for companies.

“As many people that know their onions can go into consultancy. Thousands of companies are looking for means of mitigating natural and human disasters. Such companies are ready to hire anybody who understands the terrain well,” he said.

The former President, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Alhaji Bashir Borodo, said the country lacks adequate manpower in health safety and environmental management.

Borodo said companies spend fortunes on physical and material assets, adding that the safety of the assets must be guaranteed before meaningful growth can be recorded. He said people must be employed for the safety of the workers and the environment in which companies operate.

“There is a dearth of workers in that segment. We need specialists in the area of health safety and environmental management to promote economic growth. That area is for educated and intelligent people. We have a pool of unemployed graduates who can easily fit into it.

Safety and environmental issues are all encompassing. They cut across different sectors of the economy. This implies that various sectors need such workers to survive.

He advised Nigerians to start their own businesses, adding that it will have a multiplier effect on the economy. He said this can be achieved when people originate their ideas, and execute them well.

  • Succour for Anambra flood victims

    Succour for Anambra flood victims

Some help has come to lift flood victims in Anambra State out of the depth of despair.

Eight local government areas and over 40 communities in the state were submerged by the ravaging flood. As in numerous other cases beyond the state, those in Anambra have since been moved to temporary camps.

The situation threw many into despair, not knowing how they will start afresh after the waters have receded.

Senator Joy Emordi has made a difference, bringing in some relief to augment what the state state government and other organisations and individuals have been doing.

Anambra is situated on flat land on the eastern plains of River Niger with a population of close to five million people.

But today, the pride of the people has been cut by the overflow of the River Niger that flooded and continues to hurt millions of Nigerians in some states.

The flooding, which began in Anambra State about three weeks ago, is yet to abate as more communities are being submerged daily, including an industrial district in the commercial city of Onitsha known as Harbour Industrial Layout.

The state governor, Peter Obi had virtually relocated to the affected areas in order to ensure that no life is lost in the disaster.

Some of the representatives of the people both at the state and national levels and other concerned citizens of the state had visited and provided relief materials for the affected areas.

Prominent among them are Senators Andy Uba, Margery Okadigbo, Hon. Uche Ekwunife, Senator Joy Emordi and the Minister of Aviation Stella Odua who is equally a victim.

Unable to fight back tears, Senator Joy Emordi wept on sighting the extent of damage caused by the flood. Bishop of Ubomili Diocese, Henry Okeke and the Southeast woman leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Lady Anthonia Nwankwu could not console her.

The Harbour Industrial Layout that houses over 39 big firms in the commercial city of Onitsha is submerged by water, even as owners of the affected companies are counting their losses which run into trillions of naira.

The submerging of the Harbour Industrial Layout, according to the Group Chief Executive of Krisoral Group of Companies, Oranu Chidume, has affected more than 2,000 workers.

Describing the loss of raw materials as enormous, he said it was too early to quantify the loss in monetary terms.

Emordi, who was overwhelmed by the quantum of damage in the industrial area, said: “This is the time for the wealthy men and women in Anambra State to show concern.

Krisoral Company was among the going concerns inaugurated by President Goodluck Jonathan over a month ago during his one-day visit to the state.

Proffering some long-term measures to avoid future occurrence, Senator Emordi stressed the need for the Federal Government to carry out proper dredging of the River Niger. She added that if proper dredging of the River Niger was carried out, the disaster wouldn’t have been this horrifying.

She said: “It is important that this River Niger is dredged properly. The Federal Government has started talking about it. We hope that very soon, these things will be in the trash can of history.

“I would want owners of these companies to exercise patience because something must be worked out after this flooding.”

At the Bishop Crowther Primary School in Onitsha North Local Government Area, Emordi broke down in tears again as she saw over 1,000 flood victims from Anambra East Local Government Area who were camped there.

Though she visited the camp with relief materials worth over N10m, she said that there was need to set up what she called Special Trust Fund to rehabilitate the victims after the disaster.

Emordi assured the victims that government and people of the state will make sure that their sufferings are alleviated.

Some of the items presented to the victims by Senator Emordi included over 1,000 bags of rice, 1,000 pillows, 1,000 blankets, over 500 cartons of detergents.

Other materials were large numbers of beverages, several cartons of canned tomatoes, over 1,000 tins of assorted vegetable oils, about 1,000 buckets, countless cartons of biscuits, among others.
