  • Three suicide bombers killed in Maiduguri—NEMA

The National Emergency Management Agency  (NEMA) has confirmed the death of three suicide bombers at Muna area of Maiduguri in an attempt to infiltrate the town in Friday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that four powerful explosions occurred between 9: 00 and 9: 30 pm, sending terrifying echoes to many parts of the town.

NEMA’s Northeast Zonal Coordinator, Mr Bashir Garga, who confirmed the incident, said that the blast occurred outside the town.

Garga disclosed that the suicide bombers detonated Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) strapped to their bodies behind the security trench at Muna Garage area in the outskirts of Maiduguri.

He said that terrifying echoes by the explosions caused some residents of the area to flee which made them to sustain injuries.

Garga added that the wounded were referred to hospital for treatment in Maiduguri.

“Details on the incident is still sketchy. It occurred behind the trenches and only the suicide bombers were killed,” he said, adding that normalcy has been restored to the area.

NAN reports that Muna garage is prone to suicide bomb attacks and the military had imposed a dusk to dawn curfew to secure the area. (NAN)

  • Baba wan commit suicide!

    Baba wan commit suicide!

    Have you heard?

    Heard what?

    Baba wants to commit suicide!

    Which Baba?

There are no two Babas now!  The Ebora Owu!

    Whaaaat!  But why?

He says for him it’s self-guillotine, anytime he feels Nigeria is hopeless.

    O, that!

Is that all you’ll say — o that?

What else?  That’s a very safe threat now!

    But how?

Well, who gauges what is hopeful and what is hopeless?

Seriously?  Are you real right now?  You don’t expect Baba to put his neck on the block and not have a say as to when the time is ripe?

Exactly!  It’s a very safe threat — or if you want to be politic — pledge.  It’s like that rogue prophet, Brother Jero, prophesying someone would live for 80 years.  If it comes to pass, fine.  If it doesn’t, who cares?

Naaaaa!  It’s not quite the same thing.  Baba says anytime he feels Nigeria is hopeless, he goes kaput!

    Meaning?

Meaning exactly that — kaput!  You should at least praise him for love of country

About time too!  But how about praising country, for love of Baba?  Nigeria has given Baba too many lollies.

    What do you mean, lollies?

Exactly that, lollies.  What does OFN mean, do you know?

    Operation Feed the Nation.

To me, it is Obasanjo Farms Nigeria.  But to others, it could also be Operation Fool the Nation!

Haba! Nobody fooled anyone now!  Now, you’re getting too creative for your own good!  That is just a mere coincidence!

Exactly!  No one has fooled anyone.  But it also shows Nigeria’s abiding munificence  for Baba.  Operation Feed the Nation, you must remember, led to the Land Use Decree, which made the other OFN, Obasanjo Farms Nigeria, possible!

    Mere coincidence!  Conspiracy theory!

True.  Maybe you’re right.  But what of the Presidential Library?

    What about it?

Would Baba have had it if he wasn’t president, or had OFN, if he wasn’t military head of state, even if he didn’t stage any coup?

    Hen-hen?

    Even NOUN!

Are we talking parts of speech now?

No, NOUN as in National Open University of Nigeria, not as noun, adjective, or adverb.

He did wrong by founding NOUN too?

No.  I didn’t say that.  He did real good.

    So, what are you saying?

He did good for all — and for himself too!  NOUN just awarded Baba a PhD in Theology — after his robust scholarly defence of course!

    And what’s wrong with that?

Nothing.  It only proves the latest lolly Nigeria has thrown into Baba’s mouth.  So, if he wants to commit suicide for Nigeria, Nigeria has pumped him with enough — in fact, too much — goodies to earn it.

You sef!  Poison dey your mouth!

    Not poison.  Just the truth.

  • Woman commits suicide in Ebonyi

    Woman commits suicide in Ebonyi

The body of a 40 years old woman one Nkemjika Oyibe has been found hanging on a tree in Onyemem forest in Ishinkwo Abaomege community in Onicha local government area.

Spokesman of the Police in the state, ASP Loveth Odah confirmed the incident to our reporter.

She said the case had been reported to the Command for further investigation.

Odaa said a hunter first discovered the lifeless body of the deceased and reported to community leaders who later went to the forest with the elder brother of the deceased, Peter Onyibe to see the corpse.

“But I wonder why a person should commit suicide and the family did not suspect any foul play; unless the family knew that their sister was having problem and as a result of that, they were suspecting she would commit suicide.

“They should have also been eager to know what led to her committing suicide. There is a saying that life begins at 40, so someone taking her life at 40 sounds strange”, she said.

The spokesman of the command further explained that the corpse has been released to the family for burial since no suspect had been arrested in connection with the incident.

In a telephone interview the Town Union President said the family did not suspect any person in connection with the death of the deceased.

He added that the lady hung herself and had made similar attempts to commit suicide in the past by taking drugs but she survived it.

According to him, she had a mental problem and had disappeared on December 25, 2017 from public domain.

The President also told The Nation that after several efforts in search of deceased, the family gave up the search only to be alerted by a hunter who went to check on his trap that the deceased corpse was dangling on a tree in the forest.

The shop owner, Iya Sewa who hired Iya Hamida as assistant tailor, said  the reason for her action was best known to her. According to Iya Sewa,  she didn’t show any signs of depression.

“I don’t know her reasons of choosing to kill herself; the only thing I know was that she was complaining over the contribution money she was meant to collect last week.

“She called me on Sunday that she wanted to collect her contribution money from a thrift collector (Alajo) and that if he (the Alajo) fails to give her the money. Wahala ma se le o (there’ll be trouble),” she said.

Asked about the late Funmi’s relatives and address, her boss said: “I don’t really know her husband and house address. All I know is that she stays at Idi-Araba, Mushin.”

Another trader screamed, “Allahu Akbar! I saw her sitting at the shop yesterday (Monday); when I came to look for Iya Sewa and she told me her boss was not around. I can’t believe this.”

Suicide bomber kills 13 in police academy

A suicide bomber in police uniform blew himself up inside a police training camp in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu on Thursday, killing at least 13 police officers, officials said.

Police spokesman Maj. Mohamed Hussein said the attacker, with explosives strapped to his body, infiltrated the General Kahiye Police Training Academy and struck during a police parade.

Abdikadir Abdirahman, the director of Amin Ambulances, told Reuters: “We have carried 13 dead people and fifteen others who were injured from the police academy.”

The militant Islamist group al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack.

“We will give details of casualties later,” said Abdiasis Musab, the group’s military operations spokesman.

Al Shabaab carries out frequent bombings in Mogadishu and other towns.

It is waging an insurgency against the UN-backed government and its African Union allies in a bid to topple the weak administration and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam.

The militants were driven out of Mogadishu in 2011 and have since been steadily losing territory to the combined forces of African Union peacekeepers and Somali security forces. (Reuters/NAN)

  • Presidency: suicide bombing last act of a dying terror group

Presidency: suicide bombing last act of a dying terror group

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigerians that his administration is taking measures to end Boko Haram insurgency, saying the attacks are like the last kicks of a dying horse.

President Buhari, who spoke yesterday at the launching of the Pulaaku Radio in Yola, Adamawa State, said Boko Haram had been massively degraded and its surviving members on the run.

The President, represented by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said the war against insurgency had moved to the next phase, which is intelligence-driven, with a view to ending bombings.

His words: “Instead of being hunters, they are now the hunted. In their desperation to stay relevant, they have resorted to using innocent under-aged children to carry out attacks.

“But what we are witnessing now are the last kicks of a dying horse. Yes, these kicks may be dangerous, but they don’t last long.

Progressively, they become weaker and weaker until the horse finally dies.

“I have approved the establishment of an intelligence fusion centre in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, to gather and share intelligence among security agencies in the country. This will go a long way in ending this campaign of suicide bombing.

“We are building on the nationwide campaign we launched last year, with the payoff line: ‘If you see something, say something’. It simply means that we need everyone to be involved in getting the necessary information to tackle the terrorists. They are not ghosts, and some of them live among us. We must all support our gallant troops, many of who have paid the supreme sacrifice in this war, by providing information that can rid our communities of terrorists.

“It is important for the media, especially radio and television, to continue to play their part in this war, by offering their platforms to communicate useful information to the populace. As part of our sensitisation campaign, which is still running on national radio and television, we put out those little signs that give up the terrorists, and which the people must watch out for. Help us communicate this information to the people.”

The President described as most auspicious, the timing of the launching of the radio station. It implored it and others to donate airtime for the national sensitisation campaign.

The Baale, it was learnt, insisted on performing some rituals on the body before it was brought down and handed over to the deceased’s family.

Meanwhile, an unnamed woman was prevented from jumping into the lagoon by motorists and policemen on the CMS Bridge.

According to an eyewitness Kehinde Akinrinmade, the woman, said to be a maid, wanted to kill herself because she was tired of hardship.

Akinrinmade said: “The lady was about to commit suicide on CMS Bridge. Some cars were damaged. At first we thought she was blind and then some people rushed to hold her and she kept crying.

“Some of us got down from our cars. She said she was fed up with life. That she was a maid and became sick at the place she worked. She said they took her to a church and after spending almost all her savings on her, she told them she wanted to leave to go find another job.

“That as she was in the bus, she thought life had not been fair to her and she just wanted to die.

“Thanks to National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) members, conductors, officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and policemen that ran after her.

“We tried to calm her. We talked to her and told her to trust God. I gave her my number to call me later. I will help with the little I have. Sadly, she does not have a phone but I pray she gets someone to help her call me later.”
