Sule meets NAHCON boss over rooftop Hajj fare

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has expressed concern over the increase in this year’s Hajj fare.

The governor expressed worry at a meeting with the Chairman of the National Hajj Commission (NAHCON), Jalal Ahmed Arabi, yesterday in Abuja.

Addressing reporters after the visit, Sule said he was at the NAHCON headquarters to intervene in the recent increase in Hajj fares, especially for pilgrims from Nasarawa State, as well as those from other parts of the country.

The NAHCON recently increased this year’s Hajj fare with an additional N1.9 million after pegging it at N4.9 m

The commission is asking those who have paid the initial fare to add N1.9 million, thus raising the fare to N6.8 million.

It also set last Thursday (March 28) as the deadline for intending pilgrims to pay the balance, attributing the fare increase to a high foreign exchange rate.

Sule, who was accompanied by the Executive Secretary of Nasarawa State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Mallam Idris Ahmad Al-Makura, praised Arabi for extending the deadline to enable intending pilgrims complete the payment.

He said: “From what you have seen, there are challenges concerning the Hajj operations, where pilgrims were asked to bring additional money. I know a lot of states are complaining and I know what’s been going on.

“I have come firstly because of our own pilgrims in Nasarawa State and, secondly for the pilgrims for the whole nation. I know I am also speaking with some of my colleague governors to see what steps we can take.

“Now that I have first-hand information from him (Arabi), it gives me the opportunity to be able to share with the governors what we can do to ensure that our pilgrims are able to perform the Hajj this year.”

Arabi said he was encouraged by Sule’s visit, stressing that they always shared knowledge and experience on how the country could make progress.

“Each time we speak with His Excellency, including his coming in today, he has never spoken on behalf of Nasarawa alone. He speaks on behalf of his colleagues (governors).

“I can’t thank him enough. He came in today, a public holiday; yet, he took time off to come and see us and to continue on the words of encouragement he has been giving us.

“There are challenges, but I think with the kind of visits, counseling and encouragement that we are getting from especially people like him, we will weather the storm, by the grace of God,” he said.

Being governor is a thankless job, says Sule

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, said, being a governor is a thankless job especially that whatsoever a governor does, or does not do, people will always find reasons to criticize.

Governor Sule made this known yesterday when he addressed the management and staff of the Phoenix University, Agwada, a first indigenous-owned private university in Nasarawa State, established by the first civilian Governor of the state, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, located in his village, Agwada, Kokona Local Government Area of the state.

According to the governor, irrespective of whether the people criticize him or not, he has resolved to remain focused and to give the desired leadership in order to move the state forward.

“There is nothing that you can do that is good. Everything you do, people will criticize. If you do it well, they will criticize you for doing it. If you don’t, they will criticize you for not doing it. If you don’t take the money, they will say you are taking the money. Whatever you do, you are still in trouble,” he stated.

While congratulating Senator Adamu, the Proprietor of Phoenix University, Agwada, the first indigenous private university in Nasarawa State, Governor Sule expressed optimism that with the robotics laboratory put in place under the Department of Computer Science of the university, Nasarawa State is ready for Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.Impressed with what he saw on ground, the governor was confident that even universities that were established over three decades ago, are not even contemplating robotic engineering.

He commended the courage and patriotism demonstrated by the proprietor of the institution, Senator Adamu, for establishing the university with the sole aim of giving back to the society.

He added that it was not surprising considering that the former governor and immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) pioneered the creation of the state-owned university in Keffi twenty years ago, as well as the Shabu Farms, the first indigenous commercial agriculture company.

The governor expressed the readiness of his administration to collaborate with the university especially in the area of student exchange, where students from state owned higher institutions could be sent to Phoenix University to utilize the facilities available particularly the digital and E-library.

He called on the immediate community hosting the university to own up the institution, just as he called on the people of the state to consider the university as their own.

Senator Adamu said he established the university with the purpose of giving back to his immediate community, Nasarawa State and Nigeria as a whole.

“For me, most of the officials both academic and non-academic have to be Nasarawa State people. This is not to say we cannot entertain people from outside the state but prepare people, develop people to take over the leadership of this institution.

“Those of our boys and girls with good potentials, who have good first degrees and upper degrees, they would be employed here as academic staff. Those who are short of our requirements will be employed as non-academic staff and prepare themselves better. So that our academic staff can be promoted by us, we can sponsor them for postgraduate studies,” he stated.

Senator Adamu thanked Governor Sule for undertaking a visit to the university.

Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Abdullahi Bala, said the Phoenix University Agwada has secured approval from the National University Commission (NUC) to commence academic activities in 24 programmes under three faculties namely Natural Science and Agriculture, Computing Technology, as well as Social Science and Management.

“Today, we have commenced the process of admission and we are hopeful that by the grace of God, by the end of this month we will commence academic activities.  The university was granted approval for 32 programmes but we are starting with 24 programmes under three faculties,” he said.

Prof Bala said the proprietor of the university has done his own part by establishing the institution and that what remains is for the people of Nasarawa State to take ownership of the university.

“I was told the money would clear the gratuity of retirees from 1999 to 2010. Both at the local government and state levels.  My dream again is that from 2011, when the amount increases significantly, whether anybody knows somebody in government or not, again, we will just follow the first-come-first-serve to complete the payment for 2011 by the end of this year. At the beginning of next year, we will pay purely from 2012,” he stated.

He added that the gesture is meant to bring sucour to the retirees who are presently experiencing economic hardship.

“This is in addition to whatever interventions we are having, whether it is food items or whatever, let us pay them what is due to them, and that is their own gratuity,” he added.

The governor expressed optimism that with 500 local government retirees, out of the over 700 and 100 state retirees, out of the over 300 already screened, the beneficiaries would begin to receive their payments by Tuesday.

“We are going to clear the issue of gratuity in respect of all those who retired from 1999 until 2010 for both the state and local government retirees.

“Once we are able to handle those ones from 1999 to 2010, and as, Governor Sule said, additional funds would be made available to clear that of retirees from 2011/2012,  in order to make sure we have addressed the challenge of payment of gratuity in Nasarawa State.

The DG further clarified that retired permanent secretaries numbering 60 would receive N2m each while those who are deceased are likely to receive N4m out of their entitlements.

He noted that since the inception of the present administration under Governor Sule, both local and state pensioners have been receiving one hundred percent of the pension, with the pensioners already paying their February pension.

Why Nasarawa PDP must apologise to protesting nudity women – Sule’s spokesman

A senior special assistant to governor Abdullahi Sule on public affairs, Peter Ahemba has asked the PDP state chairman in Nasarawa, Francis Orogo, to apologise and seek forgiveness from the womenfolk for misleading them into exposing their nudity during the litigation over the state governorship.

Ahemba in a statement on Thursday, January 25, in Lafia, was reacting to an accusation by Hon Francis Orogo, the PDP state chairman for accusing Governor Sule of masterminding the arrest and continued detention of some supporters of the PDP in the state over the supreme Court judgment affirming the election of the governor.

He explain that the PDP leadership in the state needs to seek forgiveness to the unsuspecting women for misleading them to display nudity in the streets whereas their own wives, daughters and close relations were not engage to do same.

He described such wicked action as an act of human right violation especially the right of the women to human dignity and must be overlooked by our civil society organisations.

The statement: “It is public knowledge that the State Police Command, in the performance of it’s constitutional responsibility of maintaining law and order, arrested some persons believed to have been sponsored by the leadership of the PDP to stage a needless protest thereby causing public disturbance, in violation of a peace pact earlier signed by leaderships of the ruling APC and the opposition PDP to maintain peace before, during and after the Apex Court ruling on the governorship dispute.

“Surprisingly, the PDP supporters, who were instigated by the party leaders resorted to violence by blocking and burning down tires on the ever busy Jos road and causing untold hardship on motorists as well as crippling commercial activities around the area, shortly after the Supreme Court rightly affirmed the election of the Governor as the duly elected Governor of Nasarawa State, thus prompting their arrest by the police.

“It is unfortunate that the PDP Chairman, Mr. Francis Orogu, whose desperation for power put the protesters in trouble has turned round to accuse the Governor of a matter that is strictly within the purview of the Police authorities and the judiciary.

“We wish to make it abundantly clear to Mr. Orogu and his co-travellers that Governor Sule, as a democrat and respecter of the rule of law does not meddle into the affairs of security agencies, the judiciary and other arms of government and therefore the allegation that the Governor is behind the arrest of the PDP supporters is baseless and unfounded”

“At this juncture, we demand an unreserved apology from the State PDP Chairman for his serial false allegations against His Excellency and the Government of Nasarawa State.

“The PDP leaders must, as a matter of morality, seek the forgiveness of the people of the state, particularly the womenfolk for misleading the unsuspecting women and encouraging them to display nudity in the streets whereas their own wives, daughters and close relations were not engaged to do same.

“This, no doubt, constitutes an act of human rights violation especially the right of the women to human dignity and must not be overlooked by our Civil Society Organisations.

“While we sympathise with the arrested protesters and pray that the judiciary will temper justice with mercy, we wish to caution that never again should our women be used in such dehumanising manner for selfish political reasons.”

UPDATED: Respect Supreme Court’s decision, Sule tells Nasarawa people

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has called on all citizens of the state to respect the judgment of the Supreme Court, which affirmed his electoral victory.

Governor Sule made the call on Friday, January 19, while speaking to journalists at the State House, Abuja, after meeting with President Bola Tinubu, moments after the Supreme Court pronounced its verdict on the election petition appeal from Nasarawa State.

Governor Sule, who was accompanied by two of his predecessors; former governors Umar Tanko Al-Makura, and Abdullahi Adamu, acknowledged the dissenting views of those unhappy with the verdict while praising the justice system for ensuring “fairness without undue interference”.

He further emphasized the importance of unity, calling on all citizens, irrespective of political affiliations, to join hands in building the state, highlighting Nasarawa as a significant state in the North-Central region, boasting a commercial quantity discovery of minerals and a flourishing agriculture sector.

The Supreme Court, on Friday, affirmed the Court of Appeal judgment that voided the nullification of the election of Sule.

The apex court, in a unanimous decision by a five-member panel, upheld the declaration of Sule of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the governorship election that was held in the state on March 18, 2023.

Reacting to a question about the pockets of protests that greeted his Supreme Court victory in his state, Governor Sule noted that people who value and respect democracy will know that the Supreme is the final court of adjudication, which decision cannot affect by protests.

“Nasarawa is a state where we had over 600,000 votes and we won with over 340,000 votes, so you will know that over 200,000 people did not vote for us. So if out of these 200,000 people who did not vote for us and another set of 1,000 people are protesting somewhere, then you will know because it’s a day that not everybody will be happy.

“In every state where the Supreme Court actually passed judgment in every one of these states, you will find some people are happy and some other people not happy. But I think people who understand what democracy is all about will understand that the Supreme Court is the ultimate and is the final and those who appreciate or respect democracy should actually leave it right there because protests or no protest will not change anything, the Supreme Court has already passed his judgment.

“In our own case, when we lost at the tribunal, we told everybody, nobody should protest and that’s why nobody protested, but that is the level of maturity that you will see from one political party or the other. We are a very mature political party, we’re the ruling party in the country, we’re the ruling party in the state and we’re showing a good example, so that’s why we will not protest.”

Disclosing the reason for his visit, alongside his predecessors, Sule said: “In line with all the judgments that have been going on in the country, I think first and foremost, we must continue to thank Almighty God for giving us good health and the opportunity to see the kind of democracy we are seeing. We must thank Mr. President, and that’s what brought us here to the Villa.

“We thank him for the kind of role he continues to play in all of these, by ensuring that fairness is done without undue interference, allowing the justice system to work the way it’s supposed to. So, we must express our appreciation to him for doing all that to the good people of Nigeria.

“As far as we are concerned in Nasarawa State, we have won at the court of appeals, unanimously. We also won today with the five justices being led by a panel of the highly respected Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun (JSC). So, we have to thank Almighty Allah that we also had all five justices in support of us and that’s why we came.

“All the issues, as far as elections are concerned, are over today. We call on our opponents, without any grudge whatsoever, to come and join us so we can build our state. Nasarawa State is next to Abuja. Nasarawa State is today in the North-Central, the only state that has commercial quantity discovery of oil.

“It is the only state, so far, that is building mineral processing plants. We already have one of the lithium factories almost concluded and as you know, it is also a state that we are very lucky where we have agriculture that is flourishing. In fact, on my right hand, is the biggest local farmer that we have in the state and he’s rushing to go back for his harvest because he’s started harvesting”, he said.
