Embrace dialogue as solution to the country’s challenges – Sultan of Sokoto

Sultan of Sokoto and Amirul Muminin, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar has identified dialogue as the only remedy and solution to Nigeria’s multi-dimensional problems.

According to the revered leader, “We should sit down, discuss issues and problems, as well as see where we have gone wrong and what went wrong.”

Abubakar made the remarked in Sokoto Wednesday night when he hosted some religious groups, resident communities and members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), to a Ramadan dinner in his palace.

The royal father noted that challenges were meant to solidify Nigeria’s unity while underscoring the need for Nigerians to trust each other.

He stressed further that  no problem in the world that dialogue cannot solve, noting that  crises were not unique to Nigeria, thus “We should see where we have derailed and retrace our steps, then move forward as a single, indivisible country.

“There is no problem without a solution and there is no padlock made without keys to open it. It remains for us to see how to open it.”

The religious monarch however, lamented the dwindling level of patriotism in the country, saying “is very low and admonished Nigerians to develop their country as nobody would do it for them.”

He further said Nigerians were eager to live in peace and unity with one another, irrespective of any religious, political and ethnic coloration.

“We must all strive to develop Nigeria into a country based on justice, fair-play and respect for on another.

“Above all, we need the fear of God, as with the fear of God, you find things going right. God is the Alpha and Omega”, he pointed out.

Abubakar explained that ” The fear of God is key to solving all our problems. Nigerians are very religious people and we have various Mosques and Churches.”

Commenting on the recurring farmers-herdsmen clashes, the religious leader said that those causing mayhem were strangers adding that “those perpetrating crimes should be treated as criminals.”

He said “We are all created by God and we should help one another, although we should hold our identities, with respect for one another.

Abubakar maintained that Nigerians must understand their differences, “if not, we will never live in peace, when there is suspicion, there will be no trust and there will be no unity,” he pointed out.

The revered monarch further commended the acting President Yemi Osinbajo, for initiating the series of wide consultations as a way out to calm aggrieved persons in the country, while promising that the traditional institution would continue to work relentlessly for Nigeria to remain peaceful, united and indivisible.

Osinbajo to North traditional rulers: Speak against divisive voices

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday urged traditional rulers from the North to rise up to the occasion and speak up against divisive voices in the region.

Some Arewa youths had recently given ultimatum to Igbos to leave the North on or before October 1st, 2017.

They claimed that they were reacting to the sit-at-home order issued by IPOB on 30th of May.

But the Acting President said that the traditional rulers have a great role to play in the matter.

He said: “As Royal Fathers and Traditional Leaders, your place and your role in our society and nation is significant. You are the custodians of our cultures and traditions, and living embodiments of our rich heritage.

“You are, by virtue of your vast knowledge, wisdom and experience, both a vital link with our past, and an important guarantee for the success of our future. This is why your role in national affairs is critical.

“The reason for these series of meetings is well known to all of us: it became necessary in the wake of a spate of divisive statements, in recent months and weeks, pitching the Southeast against the North. We are all aware of the so-called ‘ultimatum’ issued by a group of Northern youths, asking that all Igbos living in the North vacate the region.

“Before then, there was the clamour, and it’s still ongoing, by some south-eastern youths, operating as IPOB and affiliated groups, demanding secession from Nigeria at all costs and by any means.

“In all our previous engagements with Northern and South-Eastern leaders, we all came to the consensus that Nigeria is stronger and better together, and that these hate-filled and divisive rhetoric and agitations are unjustifiable, unacceptable and often times illegal. And I would like to reiterate that today,” he said.

Stressing that Nigeria has already seen enough violence and bloodshed during its history, he said that the price of Nigeria’s unity has already been paid with the blood and lives of hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians lost.

Recalling President Muhammadu Buhari’s commitment to one Nigeria from his experience in the Military, Osinbajo said that Buhari fought side by side with Nigerians of every tribe and faith.

Osinbajo added “He said we protected each other, put our lives on the line for each other, we were brothers even in the face of death. This is the type of nation we must maintain.

“As Royal Fathers and Leaders, I think you will agree with me that we all have a role to play in countering the voices of divisiveness, and the elements who seek to take us down a bloody path.

“Let us continue to counsel the misguided elements among our youth, who think that ethnic confrontation is a game and that words can be thrown around carelessly without repercussion.” he said

He assured the traditional rulers that the government is not deaf to the legitimate concerns and frustrations in parts of the country.

“Every part of Nigeria has its own grievances. But these have to be expressed graciously and managed with mutuality rather than with scorn and disdain.

“I would like to assure you all that we are here to listen and to answer, and, very importantly, to reassure everyone that we are committed to the unity of Nigeria, and that upon the foundation of that unity we can together build a prosperous and great country.

“We must never take our diversity for granted; the fullness of our strength actually lies in that diversity. And we must wield that diversity, not as divisive tool, but instead as a binding agent.

“As we round up these consultations tomorrow with a meeting with governors, it is clear to me that we are all resolved to by words, conduct and action, promote the unity of our dear nation.” he said

He however said that the government will ensure that the entire apparatus of government is deployed to ensure that no one threatens Nigeria’s territorial integrity and that no one threatens the lives or livelihoods of any Nigerian living anywhere in the country.

The objective of the government, he said, is to provide the environment for a prosperous nation, where all, regardless of ethnicity or religion, can pursue their legitimate aspirations peacefully and securely.

Thanking the traditional rulers for their unyielding cooperation and support, he said: “May the Almighty God continue to give you the wisdom and the strength to preside over your Kingdoms and the good health to reign long and reign well.”

Among those who attended the meeting included the Sultan of Sokoto, Sultan Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III; Emir of Kano, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and HRH Alhaji Dr Yahaya Abubakar Etsu Nupe Niger State.

Dogara writes Sultan, Bauchi governor stops him from renovating mosques

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has asked the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’adu Abubakar, to step into what he described as an unnecessary crisis created by the Bauchi state governor, M.A Abubakar over the renovation of mosques in Bogoro, Dass, Tafawa Balewa Federal constituency.

According to the letter, Mr Doagra said he had embarked on renovation and reconstruction of mosques in the constituency but the Governor got a wind of it and directed the District Head and the council chairman to stop the work or lose their jobs.

It was however gathered that the people of the towns said the work must continue but the Governor insisted the Speaker must not be allowed to carryout the renovation so as not to take the credit.

In his letter to the Sultan, Dogara said as a Christian, nothing in “my religion teaches me to discriminate or worsen the condition which other adherent worships”.

Mr Dogara asked the Sultan to intervene in the matter “ to have the mosques renovated and for the governor to restore the District head of Dull to his stool”.

The Speaker said he hopes the intervention of the Sultan will bring sucour to the people of his Federal constituency and encourage peaceful co-existence which the Sultan is championing.

Similarly, the Governor recently directed that local education authorities not allowed federal lawmakers to build schools or renovate existing ones in a letter seen by Naij.com.

It would be recalled that a council chairman even threatened to demolish school built by a Reps member from Azare.

Ramadan: Sultan of Sokoto to announce moon sigthing, says JNI

As Muslims all over the world get set to observe this year’s Ramadan fasting, the Jama’Atu Nasirl Islam (JNI) Thursday said that the announcement of moon-sighting will be made by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar.

The Kogi State Chairman of Jama’Atu Nasril Islam, Ambassador Usman Bello made this known in Lokoja during a press briefing to usher in this year Ramadan fasting.

He mentioned that Friday, the sighting of the moon should be communicated to the Sultan who is also the President General of JNI for eventual announcement.

The chairman of JNI appealed to all Islamic organisations, the Ulamah, the Mufassirun and the entire Muslim Ummah to follow the guidelines of Tafseer as laid down by the national headquarters of JNI.

He also warned that provocative and indecent language, character assassination, during the tafseer should be completely avoided, saying that Islam is a religion of peace and “we must preach to build and not preach to destroy”.

His words: “During Tafseer/preaching, the Ulama should not engage in controversial issues that are capable of dividing the Ummah and diverting attention from the major problems affecting the Ummah.

“The Ulama should, during Tafseer/preaching, proffer solutions to problems that have become endemic in the society, especially corruption and injustice at all level, political thuggery, adultery, cultism, witchcraft, ritual killings, the breakdown of Muslim family values, gambling and intoxication, dishonestly, insecurity and all other social vices and moral decadence bedevilling the society,” he appealed”.

Ambassador Bello therefore called on Nigerians to use the period to pray to Allah to continue to guide, protect and support our leaders at all levels for peace, unity and development.

“Let us continue to pray fervently for President Muhammadu Buhari for quick recovery and for his safe return home to continue his crusade of change and social reforms,” he added.

Osinbajo, IBB, Sultan, others save Emir of Kano from Assembly probe

The Kano State House of Assembly on Monday stopped further probe of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, following a letter received from Government House and signed by Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, urging the House to halt the probe due to appeals from notable Nigerians who pleaded on behalf of the Emir.

The Nation gathered that Ganduje who recognized the principles of separation of powers stated that his letter to that effect did not intend to threaten the independence of the House.

According to the Speaker of the Kano state House of Assembly who read the Governor’s letter yesterday afternoon, Hon. Kabiru Alhasan Rurum, the decision to suspend the probe was prompted by a letter written by Kano state governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje requesting the House to halt further actions against the Royal Father.

The letter from the Governor appealed to the state legislative arm to halt proceedings into the eight count charge against the Emir of Kano, citing mediation by prominent Nigerians, including the Governors’ Forum, Acting president, Yemi Osinbajo, Sultan of Sokoto, Alh Sahaad Abubakar, Senate President Bukola Saraki, Speaker of House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara, Aminu Dantata and Alhaji Aliko Dangote.

Ganduje in the letter to the House buttressed his appeal for the cancellation of further investigation of the charges against the Kano monarch positing that the Emir had shown remorse during a reconciliation session organized by Northern Governors’ forum in Kaduna.

The House after an extensive deliberation session passed a unanimous verdict approving the termination of the probe into the alleged illicit activities of the Emir.

The Nation learned that the House before now had planned to allegedly create additional Emirates in the state.

However, a lawmaker who spoke to The Nation on condition of anonymity expressed dissatisfaction over the abrupt intervention by prominent Nigerians.

According to him, “I am not happy at all because we are set to make the records straight before this sudden intervention by prominent personalities in the country.”

The Nation reports that Emir Sanusi has been in controversy lately with the allegation of financial misappropriation and alleged misconduct.

Apart from the probe initiated by the Kano state anti-corruption agency, Emir Sanusi recently entered the black book of the state Assembly as it set up an eight-man committee to investigate the Emir.

A member representing Nasarawa Local Government Area, Alhaji Ibrahim Gama last week raised a motion of urgent public importance.

Gama frowned at the recent comments credited to the Emir over the proposed Kano light rail project which will soon be executed by Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

The Chairman of the House committee on Works insisted that, “the statement from the Emir is capable of tarnishing his image, the Government and that of the assembly.

“The Emir during his speech in Kaduna alleged that the Kano State Governor and his entourage, including me as the Chairman of the House committee on Works wasted one month in China seeking for a loan to construct rail.”

“The Emir’s statement was not true, we spent only four days in China, and our visit was to find out the capability of the company to handle the rail project.

“His utterances have caused a lot of insult to me, the state government and also the house of assembly by the general public in the state, and outside the state.”

He took a swipe at Emir Sanusi for sending his daughter to represent in one of the functions organized by Bring Back Our Girls group in Abuja, describing it as inimical to the tradition of the Emirate Council.

“There are many responsible Emirate Council members who can represent him at the Programme. This is the first time we are seeing such in the historical traditional home,” he added.

According to Gama, the mode of dressing by the Emir’s daughter during the Programme, was an embarrassment to the emirate council and the tradition of Kano people.

He also accused Sanusi for introducing religious issues that are contrary to the teachings of Islam, saying such things are capable of disgracing the religion.

Gama further accused Emir Sanusi of involvement in political issues, misappropriation of emirate Council’s fund, and making statements against President Muhammad Buhari.

    Almajiri is unIslamic, says Sultan

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of Jema’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III has declared street begging by children, popularly known as Almajiri, unIslamic.
He has therefore charged the government, particularly at the state level to rise to their responsibilities of ensuring welfare of every citizen.
The Sultan stated these in Kaduna on Sunday while presiding over the pre-Ramadan meeting of JNI’s Central Committee, held at the JNI headquarters.
The event is an annual meeting meant to set modalities and guidelines for moon sighting and general muslims conduct in the holy month.
Delivering his opening remarks, the Sultan said, the meeting would be discussing issues that affect Muslims and Islam in Nigeria and other parts of the world.
While disclosing that, the issue of Almajiri would be among the challenges to address at the meeting, the Sultan said, “Almajiri does not represent Islam, but hunger and poverty”.
According to him, “Almajiri system of begging is not representing Islam and must therefore be distinguished from Islam. Islam encourages scholarship and entrepreneurship and frowns at laziness and idleness as exemplified by itinerant Almajiri.
“Therefore attempt, must be made to stop the practice Almajiri system of begging among Muslim faithfuls,” he said.
While noting that hunger and poverty were responsible for children begging on the streets, the Sultan charged the government, particularly at the state level to prioritise welfare of their citizens to address hunger and poverty.
He also charged the state governments to strengthen institution of ‘Zakkat’ and endowment to address wanton poverty.
Prominent traditional rulers and Islamic scholars were in attendance at the meeting.

Rice importation costs Nigeria 2 bn dollars annually- Dangote

Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Groups of Companies, says Nigerians consume over 6.5 million tonnes of rice annually, less than half of which is produced locally.

Dangote said that on Wednesday during the inauguration of the Dangote Rice Out growers Scheme in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto state.

He expressed concern that the deficit arising from the importation of rice cost Nigeria over 2 billion dollars per annum.

He said: “As agriculture remains an important sector in our economy, we plan to produce 1million tonnes of high-quality parboiled rice within the next three years.

“This is by cultivating about 160,000 hectares of irrigable rice farmland in some selected states, thus making the commodity affordable to ordinary Nigerians.

“Moreover, the out-growers scheme is committed to creating a significant number of jobs, increasing the incomes of small holder farmers and ensuring food security in the country.

“This is by providing high-quality seeds, fertiliser and agrochemicals, as well as technical assistance on best agricultural practice to farmers.”

The Project Director, Dangote Rice Ltd, Mr Robert Coleman said that the Sokoto operation was a demonstration phase meant to familiarise the farming community with the programme.

“The phase is to familiarise the farming community through the training of extension workers and lead farmers as well as test modern technologies, ‘he said.

”In 2017, they will have 25,000 hectares to be cultivated by nearly 50,000 out growers, in addition to 260 jobs expected to be created by the end of the year.”

Gov. Aminu Tambuwal called on the farmers to respect the agreement signed between the state and Dangote group to ensure that,” all products are directed to the real sectors of need.’’

”The coming of Dangote to invest in the state was as a result of the government’s sustained efforts toward inviting prospective investors to the state,” he said.

Earlier, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, commended President Muhammadu Buhari for diversifying the economy and urged Nigerians to pray for him.
