    The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Students’ Engagement, Sunday Asefon, has reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Tinubu to educational development and the welfare of students.

    Asefon said that this commitment informed the creation of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which has disbursed over N120 billion to beneficiaries to date.

    He stated this at a ceremony on Wednesday in Abuja, marking the 2025 International Students’ Day Celebration with the theme, “Celebrating and Rewarding Academic Excellence: A Key to Unlocking Latent Potentials for Sustainable Development.”

    The event brought together students from universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, secondary schools, and the Nigerian Law School.

    It witnessed the presentation of various categories of awards to top-performing students across Nigeria, including cash prizes, laptops, and scholarships.

    Speaking at the event, Asefon emphasised the transformative power of education in nation-building.

    He said, “Every great society is built on the brilliance, diligence, and imagination of its young people. Today, we proudly honour the best graduating students from our universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and the Nigerian Law School.

    “These exceptional achievers will receive scholarships, laptops, cash awards, and other empowerment tools to support their future endeavours.”

    He said the initiative also recognised outstanding secondary school students, each receiving a N100,000 cash prize as motivation to continue striving for academic distinction.

    Asefon said, “This initiative is fully aligned with the vision and commitment of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has consistently demonstrated unwavering support for education and the success of Nigerian students.

    “The President believes, and we affirm today, that our students are not just leaders of tomorrow, but contributors to national development today. When we reward academic excellence, we are investing in Nigeria’s future.

    “To all the awardees: your outstanding performances have distinguished you. You represent the best of our educational institutions, and we are proud of your achievements. I encourage you to continue leading with integrity, innovation, and a sense of responsibility to your communities and the nation at large.”

    Also speaking, Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, described the celebration as a moment to recognise the relentless pursuit of knowledge, the late nights of study, and the unwavering determination that has brought these young minds to this pivotal moment.

    The minister, who was represented by his Special Assistant on Technical Matters, Dr David Atuwo, noted the role of technology and scholarship in shaping future leaders.

    Atuwo said, “In the 61 graduating students receiving laptops today, we see the tech innovators and digital leaders of tomorrow.

    “Among the 29 recipients of the MSc Scholarship Awards, we see future professors, researchers, and policy architects who will drive national development.”

    The Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite, spoke of the collective responsibility of society to safeguard students’ welfare.

    She reassured attendees that the government would continue to ensure funding for education, teachers’ salaries, school feeding programmes, and safe learning environments through initiatives such as the Safe School Initiative.

    Uzoka-Anite said, “The youth of this country are a collective responsibility of everyone, not just the Student Union or the Ministry of Education. The brilliance, resilience, and creativity of our students are central to building Nigeria’s leadership, talent, and intellectual resources.

    “Today, we celebrate more than just high grades. We celebrate the future of Nigeria.”

    Presidential aide seeks integration of NIN with student ID cards

    The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Students Engagement, Sunday Asefon has demanded the integration of the National Identification Number (NIN) with student Identity cards for multipurpose use, including provision of accurate data on Nigerian students.

    He made the demand during a working visit to the Office of the Director – General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to discuss the strategic initiative.

    Asefon, in a statement during the weekend, said the visit was to explore ways of integrating the National Identification Number (NIN) with student ID cards for multipurpose use.

    The statement reads: “Our primary objective is to ensure that all students across all educational levels are registered and have access to digital identification.”

    He added the initiative would also provide accurate data on Nigerian students, supporting data-driven policymaking and enabling informed decisions in the education sector.

    He added: “A key component of this initiative is linking NIN to opportunities such as internships, skills acquisition programmes, and job placements. This integration will not only empower students but also enhance their access to critical developmental opportunities.

    “The Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Student Engagement is fully committed to collaborating with NIMC to increase awareness on campuses and in secondary schools.

    “Our aim is to ensure that students obtain their NINs, not just for exam registration, but also to prevent identity fraud and secure their personal information.”

    The Director -General of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, expressed readiness to partner with our office, the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, and the Ministry of Education.

    She emphasised that NIMC is already working on increasing awareness across campuses and highlighted her significant achievements in transforming the commission within the short time of her assumption of office.

    “This collaboration reflects the forward-thinking vision of the administration of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which continues to deliver impactful initiatives, skill acquisition programs, and timely responses to the needs of Nigerians at all levels,” she added.

    The senior special assistant to President Bola Tinubu on student engagement, Sunday Asefon, has emphasised that student welfare and educational development remain central to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

    Asefon, a former president of the National Association of Nigerian Students, highlighted the President’s unwavering commitment to renewing hope for Nigerian students and ensuring that every young Nigerian is equipped to succeed in an ever-evolving world.

    The presidential aide spoke on Wednesday in Abuja during the commemoration of the 2024 International Student Day, where the best-performing students in the 2022/2023 Law School Abuja, 2024 Common Entrance Examination, Junior WAEC, National Examination Council, and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) were presented with laptops, cash rewards, and scholarships.

    Additionally, the best graduating tertiary institution students from each geopolitical zone received postgraduate scholarship awards and cash prizes.

    The cash gifts and other prizes were handed to the students in collaboration with the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), National Information Development Agency (NITDA), Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Zenith Bank, and Brisco, among others.

    Asefon noted that some of the initiatives introduced by the Tinubu administration have continued to improve the welfare of students nationwide.

    He said: “The establishment of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund has ensured access to higher education for students, removing financial barriers and creating opportunities for all.

    “The removal of all tertiary institutions staff from IPPIS has taken care of the primary cause of incessant strikes by academic staff unions, thus fostering academic stability.

    “These achievements and more reflect President Tinubu’s dedication to ensuring education is a priority, not just a policy.

    “Let me reiterate that student welfare and education development remain central to the policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. His administration has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to renewing the hope of Nigerian students and ensuring that every young Nigerian is equipped to succeed in an ever-evolving world.”

    Asefon noted that one year since he was appointed the senior special assistant to the president on student engagement, his office has pursued innovative solutions and proactive engagements to advance the welfare and development of Nigerian students.

    Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, assured Nigerian youth and students that the current administration would bring governance to their doorsteps.

    Ayodele said that most of the policies of the government would soon begin to yield results.
