Olubadan’s legacies in Nigeria’s politics, development of Ibadan will remain indelible – Sunday Igboho

Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, on Friday said that the legacies of late Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Olalekan Balogun in Nigeria’s politics and the development of Ibadan will remain enduring.

He noted that his reign for just two years on the throne as the monarch attracted more socioeconomic growths to his domain and further drew global attention to Ibadan as the largest city in West Africa, South of the Sahara.

Oba Balogun died at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, on Thursday evening after a brief illness. He was aged 82.

Reacting to the demise of the traditional ruler in a personally signed condolence message forwarded to journalists, Adeyemo stated: “there is no doubting the fact that the late Olubadan played a significant role in the nation’s political development before and during his stint as a lawmaker, who represented Oyo Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly between June 3, 1999 and June 3, 2003.”

“Apart from his politics right from 1983, which centred on human capital development, Oba Balogun’s interest in sustaining and protecting Yoruba traditional heritage and institution, endeared him to many irrespective of religious and political inclinations.

“His reign for only two years witnessed more economic and infrastructural developments of Ibadanland, thus drawing more significant attention to the historical city in the global space. His death came at a time when his wealth of experience and management capability are needed most in Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole.

“I personally condole with his immediate family, relatives, our amiable governor of Oyo State, ‘Seyi Makinde, former governor of the state, Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, Olubadan-In-Council, the indigenes of Ibadan, Yorubaland as a whole and other stakeholders on the passage of our revered royal father, “the statement concluded.

I’m back to chase away killer herdsmen – Sunday Igboho

Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, fondly called Sunday Igboho who returned to the country last week has said he is ready to face and chase out killer herdsmen from Yorubaland.

Igboho said this while addressing a group of people in the Yoruba language during the burial of his mother in his hometown, Igboho area of Oyo state.

He said the police and the soldiers deployed to Yorubaland, especially to Ekiti where monarchs were killed in broad daylight cannot combat the supposed killers.

He said: “I want you all to stand with me so that we can liberate ourselves from the herders encroaching on our lands. Let us mount security in all the Yoruba lands ourselves, if not, they will take our lands.

“We don’t have to wait for the government or anyone. Let’s just work in unison. We cannot farm on our lands because of these herders.

“And our people are going hungry and angry. We don’t need the soldiers the government claims to have deployed to Ekiti state. We work following our elders and mount the places ourselves.

“It was my mother that was my fear before but now she’s gone, I have nothing to be scared of again. I am now back to take back our land.”

While refuting claims that he was working for politicians, Igboho queried if he could be working for politicians and if they would still want him dead.

He added: “I am not working for any politician. In fact, if I incidentally slapped someone, the government would be ready to arrest me and put me behind bars.

“I know they are watching me closely now to know my next action but I’m ready to take a step to stop these marauders’ activities in our lands.”

Igboho to security agencies: step up efforts against killer herders

Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo (aka Sunday Igboho) has called on security agencies in the country to step up actions against herders who are killing farmers, destroying their farmlands and raping their wives and daughters.

Igboho said killer herders must be stripped from igniting another tension in the land, particularly in southwest Nigeria.

The president of Myetti Allah (Kautal Hore) Abdullahi Bodejo had dismissed the quit notice recently issued to Fulani herders in southwest by Igboho, saying Nigerian citizens are allowed to reside and work anywhere they choose in the country.

But Igboho in a statement on Sunday said the nation’s constitution does not support mindless killings of farmers, vicious rape of their wives and destruction of farmlands, which were rampant during the Muhammadu Buhari administration, stressing that President Bola Tinubu will not tolerate such criminality.

Describing the Myetti Allah’s national president as a mere attention seeker, Igboho emphasized that though Nigeria’s constitution allows citizens to reside in any part of the country, it does not support herders under whatever guise to graze their cattle on the farmlands, kill farmers struggling to eke out a living and rape their wives and daughters.

The statement read: “It is imperative for the Miyetti Allah group to be conscious of the fact that the acts of lawlessness permeated by former President Muhammadu Buhari will not hold sway under the immediate incumbent President Bola Tinubu.

“It will do them a lot of good to perish the thought of unprovoked attacks on farmers, particularly in the South West, where we have lost many innocent farmers. Relevant security agencies and the people will not allow them to further compound the woes of the common man.

“We are again charging the heads of security agencies to redouble their efforts and strategies in ensuring that the sustenance of peace and tranquility in all parts of the country, including all the states in the southwest so that farmers and agrarian communities will not be subjected to terror and violent attacks by rogue Fulani herders and cattle rustlers.

“While we believe in the efficiency of the Police, the Department of State Security (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other paramilitary agencies to ensure security of lives and properties, we want to charge our people to be vigilant and quickly report any act capable of breaching the peace in their respective communities and locations.
