  • Oliseh hails Pharaohs performance despite defeat

    *says team needs Salah desperately

Former Super Eagles Sunday Oliseh has given Pharaohs of Egypt a pat on the back despite their lone goal defeat by Uruguay Friday. Egypt according to Oliseh did Africa proud by their performance.

He maintained that the team displayed tactical discipline and showcased a lot of hard work.  He submitted however that the team needs the services of their super star Mohammed Salah who was left on the bench in the encounter.  Salah was seen after the match especially after the goal, looking very disappointed.

“Proud of Egypt’s performance today vs Uruguay. Did Africa proud Though they lost, they did well tactically & worked hard. They have a chance to qualify but they need Mo Salah desperately,” Oliseh submitted shortly after the match.

The Pharoahs gave a good account of themselves and held their opponents with virtually all the action taking place in the midfield.  Contrary to initial predictions that Uruguay might have an edge it turned out to be a very technical match that saw Egypt maintain 43% possession as against Uruguay’s 57%.

Egypt Coach Héctor Cúper not wanting to take further risk with star man Mohammed Salah chose to keep him on the bench.

His teammates nonetheless held their own but it was late Jose Gimenez header that broke the ice in the 89th minute. Prior to that decisive goal an shot from outside the 18 from Cavani would have sealed the victory earlier than the 89th minute.

Uruguay now face Saudi Arabia in Group A on Wednesday in Volgograd at 4pm, while Egypt face Russia on Tuesday evening at 7pm in St Petersburg.

  • Oliseh: I am still in charge of Fortuna Sittard

Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh still basking in the euphoria of his recent legal victory over Dutch division two club Fortuna Sittard, has declared that he is still in charge of the club at least till May 2018.

Oliseh who finally bared his mind on the implication of the judgment using his platform SundayOliseh.tv Wednesday, said his explanation became necessary because many have asked him the implication of the KNVB court of Arbitration decision in his favour.

In a 20 -paragraph report, Oliseh whose contract with the club originally runs till June 2019, revealed that the court did not find him to have acted as a bad employee; on the contrary it found Fortuna management guilty of not being good employers.

The implication he further said is not only that the club is compelled to pay him all his financial dues and compensation for his still running contract but further  implies that “By virtue of it annulling the suspension of Fortuna

Sittard on myself and asking me to continue till May, I am still officially the Chief Coach of Fortuna Sittard till May 2018!,” he submitted

The former Eagles captain whose last assignment as a coach was taking the home based Eagles to the 2016 Championship of

African Nations (CHAN) in Rwanda, stopped short of saying that his slogan “The winning culture” is at work when he added

“Accusations from Mr. Gun and his “Gang” were thrown out the window not only because they did not make sense but dated way back as over a year ago! Hence the now historic question of the Judge to Mr. Isitan Gun that is still yet unanswered” If the accusations you levy against Mr. Oliseh Sunday Is true, why then did you give him a new 2 years contract in may 2017 with better conditions?”How could you suspend a coach for crimes he supposedly committed in 2016/2017 season in February 2018?  When he is heading towards being crowned champion, having taking the club from 19th position in January 2017 to 1st position in January 2018?”

Oliseh is however not celebrating his success selfishly as he has continued to pray for his team to emerge champions and crown the efforts he started with success.

“For Obvious reasons I am praying that my players and the caretaker coaches in charge now finish the phenomenal work we started and make Fortuna Champions!”even as he highlighted the importance of having the fear of God in everyday dealings’ “One major lesson learnt, no matter what, it pays to be honest, hardworking, professional, hungry and above all God fearing, “he enthused

Fortuna Sittard who have continued to record impressive results take on Den Bosch on Friday. The club lead the 20-team log with 69 points in 35 matches.

Sittard: Sacked Oliseh too stubborn for comfort

After initial assurances given to former Super Eagles Coach Sunday Oliseh by his Dutch second division side Fortuna Sittard that his position as head coach is not threatened, the club Wednesday formerly parted ways with the former Eagles Captain for what the club dubbed inevitable decision.

The club which has been on losing streak for some time now however said the Oliseh’s sack has nothing to do with his recent inability to win matches but his behavior and attitude towards management and staff including players which has become too tough to bear.  The club accused Oliseh of making the working relation within the club frosty, adding that efforts made by management to get Oliseh to repent fell on deaf ears.

In what could pass for keeping the record straight and speaking out of the abundant of the heart, the club via its verified twitter handle said

“Fortuna Sittard has immediately put its coach Sunday Oliseh on non-active. The club management makes this decision as a result of the repeatedly culpable actions for a longer period by the trainer towards several persons in the organization.

Several attempts by the club to move the trainer to other behavior remained unfortunately without result, resulting in an unworkable situation as a result.

The board of Fortuna Sittard emphasizes that the decision to sack Sunday Oliseh is not motivated by the current sporting performance. Because of his inadmissible actions, the coach has made the cooperation with many people within the organization impossible, from players, to employees. Fortuna Sittard regrets the decision, but states that the club interest goes above all else.

Oliseh joined Sittard on the 27th December 2016 shortly after leading Eagles to first round ouster in the 2016 edition of Championship of African Nations (CHAN) in Rwanda.

Fortuna Sittard have played and lost five matches back to back between 12th January and 12th February, even as they host Telstar without Oliseh on Friday.

World Cup: Oliseh counts Nigeria’s blessings

Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh is relishing Nigeria’s past outings in the World cup describing them as unforgettable memories. Oliseh who is current coach of Dutch second division side Fortuna Sittard poured out his feelings in a tweet just few hours after World Soccer ruling body FIFA announced camping sites for the 32 countries that will lock horns in Russia, attaching nostalgic picture of his celebration after scoring for the Super Eagles in one of his outings with then teammate Finidi George equally in jubilant mood.

@FIFAWorldCup “From Daniel Amokachi to Emmanuel Amunike, Sunday Oliseh to Jay-Jay Okocha, @NGSuperEagles have given us some unforgettable #WorldCup memories! #TBT” he enthused

Oliseh whose last assignment for Nigeria was leading the CHAN Eagles to first round ouster at the 2016 edition in Rwanda,  was only few weeks ago  rumoured to have been shown the door by the Dutch side, a report which the side quickly denied insisting that the Nigerian is doing a good job and has no cause to fear over his position in the club.

Oliseh who was among the first batch of well wishers to have congratulate former World footballer of the year and newly elected President of Liberia George Weah  fillers in football circles indicate, is  likely to be among analyst that will feature in Russia when the battle of supremacy begins.

Although Oliseh parted ways with his Super Eagles job before the team completely sealed qualification for Russia, he nonetheless contributed in no small measure to initial success recorded at the kick off of the qualifiers, leading to team to an impressive 14 Games victory with only two losses with 19 goals scored and 6 conceded.

Oliseh still in charge says Fortuna Sittard

Dutch second division side Fortuna Sittard have poured cold water widely reported sacking of former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh.  The club on Tuesday took to the social media to debunk the story insisting that the former Eagles defender who was appointed to the position in late December 2016 is still in charge of the club.

“Today, various media reports appeared about the position of head coach, Sunday Oliseh. However, Fortuna Sittard denies the news about the dismissal of the head coach” the club said.

Oliseh who joined the Dutch side shortly after unimpressive outing with CHAN Eagles at the 2016 edition held in Rwanda, has since led Fortuna Sittard to their first silverware in 23 years. The promotion chasing side emerged as winners of the second period in the in the Eerste Divisie after finishing as league leaders at the end of Matchday 20.

But the side have not been in their super form in the new year with two victories in five matches.  Their 2-1 victory over Ajax II was followed by back to back defeats by Dordrecht and Emmen respectively.  The back to back defeat may have triggered off the sack speculation which the club has quickly dismissed as unfounded.

Fortuna Sittard who are third on the log in the 20-team Eerste Divisie with 44 points in 22 matches will take on 15th placed Volendam on Friday.

  • SUNDAY OLISEH: My sunny side with Fortuna Sittard

SUNDAY OLISEH: My sunny side with Fortuna Sittard

Sunday Oliseh’s success story with Fortuna Sittard in the Dutch league is a potential Hollywood classic. “I chose Fortuna Sittard out of respect for my family, not because it was the best offer that I had after leaving the Nigeria manager job,” the former Super Eagles captain said with a cheer, months after his unceremonious exit as coach of the national team.

Indeed, Fortuna Sittard was the least on the table for Oliseh. The first division club was battling relegation and on the brink of bankruptcy when Oliseh stepped in and nothing short of a miracle could have brought them out to the klieg-light after a short spell.

“Coming from relegation struggle to playoff is indeed a miracle,” recalled Sunny before explaining: “It is still a miracle considering that the club was in bad shape at the beginning of 2017, and within months we came back to winning a period title.

“After leaving Nigeria, I got offers from many clubs in Africa and Europe. With the array of offers that I received, I realized I gained much from coaching the Nigerian team. A top club from South Africa, a club from Portugal and numerous national football federations approached me, but I wasn’t interested.

“My first consideration was my family members; because family is the most important thing to me. I wanted to go to a place that would make me happy.

“Sittard is just 45 minutes by car from my home. Just over a year and a half ago, Fortuna was almost bankrupt, after years of soreness since its relegation in 2002, but I choose them because I just wanted to be close to home and be where I feel at home.”

Sittard’s resurgence came slowly but surely. Though, Oliseh wanted to rebuild the team with new players, he did not have the luxury to pay foreign players: “We even wanted new players and we were able to contact two Nigerian players. Boys who I believe would make us better and stronger. But financially, their arrival was not feasible, so we could not complete the process of signing them. No thanks to the Dutch rule that non-EU footballers must earn at least 200,000 or 400,000 euro as salary.”

Oliseh looked inward to motivate his players.

He further explained: “The fans became our motivator; they have stood by us when nothing was working and the motivation is that we must not let them and ourselves down.”

The slogan worked like magic and before long the club began to smash the records. It went without a home loss or draw in seven matches and defeated arch rival Young Ajax to climb the top of the league.

“I created a new club record as the only coach in the history of Fortuna Sittard to win six consecutive home games,” he offered.

He was named the coach of the division, and his club became the winner of the second period title to break a 23-year-old jinx. It was the first time Fortuna Sittard is winning another prize since 1995.

In this interview with TAIWO ALIMI, the former Ajax and Juventus star, speaks more on his low and high points right from his early football stage to the present. Excerpts…

    Beginning

My father did not want me to play football. For him football was a taboo. He was an accountant. At that time there was no one in my area who could live off football. The only people we saw playing football were school drop-outs. Those who played football got a penalty. My father had been a goalkeeper, but he broke his hand. Then my grandfather forbade him to play football and he went to the university. He wanted me to become a lawyer, economist or accountant. On the day that I showed my first pay slip as a footballer, he was proud. “Hmmmm, not bad,” he said then. And now he watches Fortuna’s matches via the internet, in Nigeria.

    Coaching as a career

I started thinking about coaching when I got to Ajax Amsterdam. Whatever I know and have done in football, I want to thank Ajax Amsterdam for it. Ajax is an institute, full of tradition. Ajax is more than a football club. There, as a player of Ajax, I decided to become a trainer. I looked around at the future and thought that is a good job, being a coach. You could see that players are being made. You look at their strengths, their potential, and you get to work as a trainer. You repeat, give advice, and pay attention to details. You make a talent better, also by masking its weaker points. I think that Ajax is one of the best clubs in the world to play. And young players get opportunities. In fact, I learnt how to shoot properly in Ajax. I did not have people around me in Nigeria who could explain that to me. You learned football in Nigeria with friends. If you had learned something new, it was war. Then the others wanted that too. We did have young coaches who gave some tips, but at Ajax I learned to shoot solidly. There were the trainers, there was the infrastructure. I kept practicing regularly after the training, with Van der Sar on target.

I also owe a lot of my qualities as a coach to my former role as a central midfielder, because then you have to be unselfish. You run for others. You defend for others. You help others to play better and score. As a coach you are also unselfish. You do not think for one player, but for everyone. The midfield requires content. I try to teach the players here that they need more content as footballers. My goal is not to train Fortuna for the rest of my life. The players are like my young brothers. I do everything to make them better and will not stop saying anything to them until they win the Ballon d’Or.

From Super Eagles to Fortuna Sittard

After leaving Nigeria, I got offers from many clubs in Africa and Europe. With the array of offers that I received, I realized I gained much from coaching the Nigerian team. A top club from South Africa, a club from Portugal and numerous national football federations approached me, but I wasn’t interested. My first consideration was for my family members because family is the most important thing to me. I wanted to go to a place that would make me happy. Sittard is just 45 minutes by car from my home.

    Low point at Fortuna

Last January, we were battling relegation and at a point, we even suffered point deduction that is in the run-up to the meeting at RKC Waalwijk.

We understood that the pressure is mounting due to the fact that we are moving towards the end of the season. The coaching crew and the players were well aware of this and so we decided we have to change gear and play for the fans. We do not want to leave them in the cold, when they go on the long journey to Waalwijk.

The draw at Sporting added little inspiration but that made us to step up our game for the fans and us. Let’s give them what they deserve because of their unwavering support for us down the years.

The fans became our motivation and it made sense to play for something. It is called motivation. It is understandable. If you actually play for something, for example a place in the playoffs and you need a good result. As said, we are motivated by the support of the fans and the next two games that came towards the end of the season, we knew, we had to really play good football for the fans to secure the title and we can go on vacation with a positive feeling.

The year has been one full of ups and downs, but we have kept our promise to the fans who have remained positive through it all. It’s good to go to the fans. I think the supporters are also proud of how we have galvanized the team after the winter break.

    Turnaround

Coming from relegation struggle to playoff is indeed a miracle. We wanted to win this for the fans because they have not won anything in over 20 years. But it is still a miracle considering that the club was in bad shape at the beginning of 2017, and within months we came back to winning a Period title.

Our 2-1 victory over Jong Ajax not only makes it a record of seven victories in a row, but secures us the second Period title. It was Fortuna’s first title in 23 years. It is the Lord’s doing. Only God can help wield such a miracle: From relegation struggle to Playoff in 12 months.

The turnaround for us started after the convincing 5-1 victory over Dordrecht and it went on with the 2-1 win over Almere. I created a new club record as the only coach in the history of Fortuna Sittard to win six consecutive home games.

The victories were good for the morale of the boys and it gave us the belief that we can do whatever we set our mind to do.

Sunday Oliseh is Wrong, says Troost-Ekong

Russia bound Super Eagles defender Troost- Ekong is happy to have proven Ex-Super Eagles handler Sunday Oliseh
    wrong.
Ekong who was in his superlative form in the course of the world cup qualifiers so far,  recalled that the former Eagles handler had said he was too soft for comfort especially for a defender.

The central defender who made his senior international debut for Nigeria on 13 June 2015, playing 90 minutes in an AFCON qualifier against Chad made three starts for the senior team in 2016 before he was selected by Nigeria’s under-23 team in their 35-man provisional squad for the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, where he played every minute possible and went on to win Bronze.

Recall that Oliseh only used the central defender for Tanzania and Democratic Republic of Congo, before he stopped inviting him for the national team assignments.

Coach Gernot Rohr deem fit to invite the defender for Nigeria’s 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, and now that the country has qualified, even with a game at hand, Ekong feels vindicated in his decision to play for Nigeria.

In an interview with ACLSport‘s Chief Football Writer, Fisayo Dairo, he said: “I wanted to play for Nigeria and as soon as Stephen Keshi called me in 2015 and asked if I was interested, yeah, it was a dream come true to play for Nigeria against Chad that time.”

”The Olympics was like a restart for my international career. I was part of the Super Eagles until Sunday Oliseh took me out because he said Oyibo boys are too soft,” Troost-Ekong has said.

He added: ”I hope he (Oliseh) is watching his TV now and see us going to the World Cup.” No ill feelings with him, I saw him at the Olympics last year and we spoke briefly, though he didn’t believe in me then, but I think Nigerians can see now what I can do.”

Troost-Ekong’s partnership with German-born Leon Balogun in central defence especially in the campaign against Chad, Mali, Tanzania, Cameroon and Zambia) has been adjudged the worthwhile.

Troost-Ekong and his Nigerian teammates still have one more game in the world cup qualifying series against Algeria in November “I hope to be in good form and I hope that Coach Gernot Rohr will call me up even for the World Cup squad and same for other guys.”

CHAN 2018: Competitive matches good for our preparation -Yusuf

CHAN Eagles coach Salisu Yusuf says preparation for the Continental show billed for Kenya in January should go beyond mere training but also includes competitive and shape up matches to test the players all round readiness.

Yusuf who gave the players in camp blanket approval to go and play for their teams this weekend said playing competitive matches for their clubs is as a matter of fact part of the training for the forthcoming championship adding that Nigeria is determined to post a better outing in Nairobi.

“We are in camp yes but we need to combine training with competitive matches which is why we released them to go and play for their clubs this weekend. It is all part of the training and shape up for the forthcoming championship. Don’t forget that they are professionals, the more the play and train, the better the get,” he enthused

Yusuf who was part of the Sunday Oliseh led technical crew that exited the championship in the quarterfinals at the 2016 edition in Rwanda, insists that Super Eagles stand a good chance of re-taking the driver’s seat in African football, describing the period the country has failed to measure up as one of those temporary setbacks associated with the highly competitive game.

Yusuf only few days back, named Ifeanyi Uba safehand Ikechukwu Ezenwa who incidentally was in goal for the Eagles in Rwanda, captain of the team.

Eagles will tackle Squirrels of Benin Republic at the Stade de l’Amitié in the first leg of the qualifiers on August 11 with the return leg billed the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano a week later.

The Squirrels made a tomfoolery of permutations by some analysts that they will be blown away by the Hawks of Togo, when they beat the Hawks 9-8 on penalties.  They had earlier held Hawks to a 1-1 Lomé before consolidating at home.

While some soccer fans in Nigeria have expressed optimism that the Eagles will fly over the Squirrels, others however warned against treating them with kid gloves to avoid what they have dubbed unexpected upset.

How Sunday Oliseh escaped bomb blast by whiskers

Former Coach of the Nigeria national team Sunday Oliseh escaped the explosion that appeared to target the Borrussia Dortmund team’s bus on Tuesday ahead of their Champions League match against Monaco by a whisker.

Oliseh was  closed to the Signal Iduna Park to watch the game  one of the Technical Study Group the UEFA Champions League before the three bombs exploded.

in his twitter handle where he gave the narration, Oliseh said he was 200 metres away from the scene of the blast.

“Thank God! I Was just 200 meters from the Dortmund stadium when the bombs struck Dortmund team Bus! Really Scary day but grateful to be safe!”, he posted on his official Twitter handle.

Meanwhile Borrussi Dortmund has confirmed that Marc Bartra’s wrist surgery “went well” after the defender was injured in the explosion.

Bartra was the only person hurt in the incident, which happened as the coach left the team hotel ahead of Tuesday’s quarter-final first leg.

Police were unable to specify what type of explosives were used, but they described the devices as “serious”, suggesting they had been hidden under a hedge next to a car park.

The match was subsequently postponed and re-arranged for today(Wednesday) by 5;30pm, with Dortmund already holding a training session ahead of the game.
