Sunshine’s appeal against Lobi match quashed

Sunshine Stars appeal against decisions from an abandoned Nigeria league match against Lobi Stars has been thrown out for lack of merit.

Sunshine requested the match, which was disrupted after crowd violence, be replayed in its entirety and also be staged in Lagos.

However, their prayers were not answered by the NFF Appeals Committee, who ordered that the remaining minutes of the match be played today.

Lobi Stars were leading 1-0 with six minutes to the end of the match. Yesterday’s match ended 1-1 with Sunshine’s Prince Aggreh scoring the equaliser at the Teslim Balogun stadium to conclude an abandoned Week 35 game.

The draw has steered Lobi clear of relegation, while Sunshine Stars now have 60 points in 37 games, same as Nasarawa and Wikki Tourists.

  • Sunshine face uphill task for top-three

Sunshine face uphill task for top-three

It was supposed to culminate in a first Nigerian league title for Sunshine Stars on their 20th anniversary as a club. So thought most of their faithful, players and even officials including those at the football agency that oversees the affairs of the Akure club, but that now looks bleak.

The Akure club were the best in the first round of this season’s campaign in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), also referred to as the Glo Premier League. They finished the first round top with 36 points, same with Enyimba, but with a superior goal difference.

Such was the dominance of Sunshine Stars in the first round of the season that they occupied top spot for 10 match days including sitting pretty at the summit for five consecutive match days. Sandwiched among that run was a 3-0 win at Heartland, which at that time was their only success on the road.

In fact that 3-0 success at Heartland did serve as a catalyst to wet the appetite of Sunshine Stars faithful as they looked forward to a first Nigerian title with their 20th anniversary this year.

On the last day of the first round, Sunshine Stars barely scraped past struggling FC Taraba, at the time bottom of the standings. Playing at home in front of just above 5,000 fans the Taraba club stunned them by taking the lead through Stephen Adah in the 12th minute.

Sunshine Stars had to toil for 32 minutes before Tunde Adeniji pulled them level and then scored the winner five minutes into the restart. Adeniji’s brace of goals was just enough to keep them ahead of Enyimba, who claimed a 2-1 win at southeast rivals, Enugu Rangers.

The Akure club failed to strengthen their playing personnel in mid-season with new signings despite the fact that their squad looked thin whenever the likes of goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Prince Aggreh, Paul Onobi, Dayo Ojo and Tunde Adeniji were away on international duties.

While Sunshine Stars were quiet in the mid-season transfer market, their fellow title contenders, Enyimba, were hogging every talent in sight to shore up their already star-packed squad. In came Musa Najare and Burkina Faso striker, Ahmed Kone as well as the promotion of youngster Alloy Browne from their development team for the second round.

If Kennedy Boboye’s men needed to be told that the second round is the business end of the title race, struggling FC Taraba made that statement clear to them at the Jolly Nyame Stadium in Jalingo. Adah, again, returned to score against Sunshine Stars, and this time, the winning goal. Their rivals in the title race, Enyimba, battled Rangers to a 1-1 draw and that signalled the start of Sunshine Stars’ struggles in the run-in of the NPFL.

And then the collapse at home came. Two games on the spin, Sunshine Stars failed to claim full points after a 100 per cent run in the previous 13 matches at home. First, Heartland, who they had beaten in the reverse game 3-0, got a point off them and then Nasarawa United crashed the party with a 3-2 win ending a six-year home record held by Sunshine Stars in the top-flight.

Sunshine Stars head coach, Boboye, believed that the Nasarawa United setback was just a blip and that “we will bounce back.” At present, the Owena Waves are eight points behind table-topping Enyimba and have been dislodged from the top-four for the first time since match day six, which was five months ago.

And their recent 0-3 capitulation at fellow title contenders, Warri Wolves, summed up their struggles in the business end of the season followed up by a 1-2 loss at Kano Pillars. But midfielder, Paul Onobi, remains confident that they can salvage the situation with five games to go.

“It is not over yet,” he told supersport.com. “We have had a few results which are not good for us, but there are five games to be played and we can still do better.”

The run-in for a top-three finish now presents them with a handful of tricky and big contests in their last five games against relegation-threatened sides, Akwa United, Bayelsa United and Lobi Stars. There are also two home games against southeast teams, Rangers and Enyimba, despite Onobi’s assurances. The latter is their last game of the season on November 15 and could prove important in determining the campaign’s outcome if Enyimba or the other top-four sides fail to build on their lead.

Until date, Sunshine Stars’ best finish in the top-flight remains a second-placed position in the 2010/11 season when they missed the title by two points less to Dolphins, who notched up 73 points to win the title that season.

Pillars now have 49 points from 33 games, while Sunshine have 53 points.

Tony Edjomariegwe’s 90th minute penalty which was contested by Sunshine players earned Pillars all three points.

Omololu Waheed turned the ball into his own net in the 15th minute to give Pillars 1-0 lead.

The Akure Gunners fought back and got the equaliser in the 58th minute through Seun Olulayo.

    Sunshine will be league champs’

Sunshine Stars centre back, Elijah Ogene has said the Akure Gunners stand a good chance to win the league title.

The Akure outfit are fourth on the 20-team top flight on 53 points five points behind league leaders, Enyimba with six matches to wrap up the season.

Ogene said his side have the potential and quality to out-stage current league leaders, Enyimba for the top prize.

“There is quite a possibility for Sunshine Stars to emerge champions of the ongoing league season, I think the hope is brilliantly high.

“That’s why we are working very hard to amass enough points in the next two, three matches to close up on leaders, Enyimba.

“Right now we consider Enyimba the biggest challenge on our path to becoming league champions,” said the former Abia Warriors strongman to supersport.com.

Ogene said his side are heading to Kano to confront champions, Pillars for the maximum three points at stake.

“The clash at Kano Pillars this weekend is crucial on our programme to challenge and close up the gap at the summit.

“The encounter is certain to be tough but I believe we need the whole three points more than the hosts, Pillars.

“We are already training twice daily in readiness for the clash, our hopes are quite high of nipping a decent result in Kano,” said the former Nembe City central defender.

Sunshine Stars will contest for points on the road at Kano Pillars, Akwa United and Bayelsa United while they challenge for vital points on home ground against Enugu Rangers, Lobi Stars and Enyimba.

“It wasn’t an easy game, I am so happy that I scored three goals. Sunshine Stars are a good team and they have good players, ” said Gbolahan Salami to allnigeriasoccer.com.

“I have not been playing for three to four weeks because of injury so I am happy to be back and score.

“I want to score many goals before the league ends but I won’t say I’ll score 16,17 or 26 goals. I want to take the games as they come.”

Having missed out on the Super Eagles squad for their upcoming friendlies against Democratic Republic of Congo and Cameroon, coach Sunday Oliseh compensated Salami by calling him up for the CHAN qualifier against Burkina Faso.

Adeniji shoots Sunshine back into contention

Hotshot Tunde Adeniji was Sunshine Stars hero on Sunday when they defeated Abia Warriors 1-0 in a Week 31 game of the Nigeria league to revive their fading championship hopes.

Sunshine are now back in contention for the title with 53 points from 31 games and move to third place.

Adeniji scored in the 58th minute to break the deadlock.

He has now scored 14 goals to be joint leading scorer with Nasarawa United’s Esosa Igbinoba, who fired blanks on Friday’s clash at Akwa United.

  • LMC warns erring Sunshine, Rangers fans

LMC warns erring Sunshine, Rangers fans

FC, Rangers and FC Ifeanyi Ubah and their supporters to refrain from further disruptive behaviour during the remaining fixtures of the Glo Premier League 2014/15 season.

In a major breakthrough for the campaign for conducive match day experience for fans at all Glo Premier League venues which has recorded an upsurge in attendance, including family groups showing up for games, security operatives at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano with the cooperation of Kano State FA and the Kano Pillars FC Management apprehended a serial disruptive fan, charged him to court for attempted breach of peace and secured a conviction.

Underscoring the weight of the LMC’s concern on the matter, the letter to the clubs was personally signed by the Chairman, Shehu Dikko and warned that any further breach of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Framework and Rules by their supporters will attract varying but stringent sanctions that may include prosecution in a competent court.

In the case of Sunshine Stars, the warning was occasioned by activities of some fans from the club’s official supporters club that led to disruption of peace of the fans during the Match Day 28 fixture between Sunshine Stars and Nasarawa United.

In that of Rangers, it followed reports of some fans, one of which was expelled by the referee for unauthorised access to the technical area while the match day 29 fixture against Shooting Stars was on. Concerning FC Ifeanyiubah, the LMC noted that a supporter of the club was reported to have encroached on the pitch to forcefully remove an injured Kano Pillars player during their match day 30 fixture in Nnewi.

In the letter, the LMC chairman said to the clubs that “you’ll recall that under the Framework and Rules governing the League, disturbances at match venues are prohibited and clubs are held responsible for the behaviour of their supporters before, during and after a match. Therefore, should you fail to address the situation forthwith, the LMC would be left with no option than to either close your stadium to supporters or implement a stadium ban and move your games to a neutral venue in another city as provided in the rules”.

The three clubs and indeed all clubs in the NPFL were also reminded that the LMC has a pact with security agencies to treat match day disturbances as a criminal breach of the peace for which offenders will face prosecution. The recent case in Kano was cited as a reminder that such disruptions and or attempted disruption will be treated as a criminal offense and a general warning to other clubs that “the LMC will not hesitate to allow the same treatment meted to any individual who engages similar disruptive behaviour at match venues anywhere in the country.”

  • Wikki set to down Sunshine

    Wikki set to down Sunshine

Wikki Tourists captain and right-back, Mustapha Ibrahim has said his side will puncture the smooth ride of Sunshine Stars in the ongoing season.

The newcomers will host the second placed side, Sunshine Stars in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) match day 26 clash on Sunday at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium (ATBS) in Bauchi.

Ibrahim said his side cannot afford further drop of point in the ongoing season if the chance at the continental will be a reality.

“Sunshine Stars are almost invincible and wonderful, especially on the home ground while they have equally gone outside their base to pick valuable points on the road but we have resolved to turn them back empty-handed on Sunday.

“We are 100% ready for them and have actually strenghtened ourselves to engage them in what will go down in history as the toughest match of the season. Of course, we cannot afford to forfeit any point on the home ground if our season’s laudable mark will be achieved.

“We need the whole three points to inch closer to the summit after we ceded the three points to Warri Wolves in our last match. The match will certainly be tough, we have no choice right now but to claim the points at stake,” said Ibrahim to supersport.com.
