“But he is very excited to join the team for the first time and even called up his family on his arrival,” Eagles spokesman, Ben Alaiya, told MTNFootball.com.

He is expected to be taken on a special drill before joining up with the rest of the squad for full training at the match venue.

Timberwolves striker, Dike, who was a late call-up after the withdrawal of Chelsea stars Mikel Obi and Victor Moses, is the only player still being expected.

Levante striker Obafemi Martins, Elderson Echiejile from Portuguese club Sporting Braga, Ogenyi Onazi from Lazio and goalkeeper Austin Ejide were among the players who trained at the Miami International Stadium.

“Martins was all over the place in training. He wants to prove he deserves to be part of the team after a long absence.

“He has promised to put in his best and see that Venezuela fall to justify his recall and make Nigerians happy,” Alaiya added.

The match will kick off 8pm Miami time, which will be 2am Thursday in Nigeria.

  • CBN vows to support Super Eagles

CBN vows to support Super Eagles

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said on Thursday in Abuja that it would give the Super Eagles the necessary support to become world-beater.

Ugochukwu Okoroafor, the Director, Corporate Communications Department of the bank, gave the assurance, while announcing the bank’s contribution to sports development in the country at the secretariat of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA).

He said the drop in the performance of the Super Eagles called for concern and as such, should not be left to sports people alone to handle.

“Just as they say politics is too serious to be left for politicians alone, so is sports too serious to be left to sports people alone. Everybody should get involved and that is why we are here.

“In soccer, we used to be number four in the world and for us not to be even fourth in Africa means we have to find out what the structural challenges are.

“We are no longer a strong force in athletics and can’t compare with Jamaica and you know Jamaica can’t match Nigeria in terms of size and population.

“Most of the people running for Jamaica came from Nigeria. So, we have it and we used it in the days of Chidi Imo, Falilat Ogunkoya and others,” Okoroafor said.

He said the support to the Eagles and football in general was a replica of what the CBN had done to golf and tennis that have produced talents for the country.

The banker further said that the CBN had plans to also support the Beach Soccer Competition scheduled to take place at Jabi, Abuja, in November.

“We have our core mandate and what we do is in the context of corporate social responsibility.

“What we are doing is to help develop the society, so that we can have a stable economy, bearing in mind that we have our core mandate which is printing of currency.’

Keshi lists Mikel for AFCON tie

Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi, has included Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi for next month’s AFCON tie with Liberia, MTNFootball.com reports.
Mikel opted out of the first leg in Monrovia, which finished 2-2, when it was first learnt that the game will be played on an astro turf.
Keshi’s programme was on Tuesday handed to the Nigeria Football Federation’s technical department, according to top officials of the glass house.
“The coach has plans to name a killer squad that would include Chelsea stars John Mikel Obi and Victor Moses,” a top official told MTNFootball.com.
Several top officials who accompanied the Eagles to Monrovia earlier this month clamoured for the recall of Mikel after the team’s midfield collapsed against a rampant home team.
Mikel has yet to play under Keshi, who took charge of the Eagles in November.
However, West Bromwich Albion striker, Osaze Odemwingie will have to wait a little longer before he returns to the Eagles fold, another top official told MTNFootball.com
“For Osaze, he would just be returning from his three-match ban and the coach feels he has not seen enough of him so I don’t think he would be making the Liberia game,” the official revealed.
MTNFootball.com also gathered that the Eagles coach is expected to name his squad for the AFCON return leg next week with the camp opening for home-based players in the first week of next month.
The match will be played on October 13 in Calabar.

  • Eagles: Too big to fly

    Eagles: Too big to fly

Travelling with the Super Eagles can be fun. They excite one with the delusion that they are doing Nigerians a big favour. They think they are super beings and consider others as leaches, who must quickly be blown out like catarrh in the nostrils. Their swagger irritates largely because they hardly can fill the immigration forms unguided.
Little wonder, the fans don’t flock around them. Elsewhere, the convergence of stars attracts lovers of the game to them. Soccer freaks cherish such moments, taking pictures, getting autographs and, possibly having some souvenirs. Not so for the Super Eagles; they treat their fans like the plague.
Going to Liberia on Friday morning threw up the best opportunity for the players to change their ways towards others. Not so for these bunch, like the folks before them.
You will expect that such early morning movement will elicit greetings from the young men when they see elders. No way! Instead, they block their ear-drums, pretending to be listening to music, Yet will acknowledge greetings from one another. In fact, we had a good laugh watching them, their ear phones on, chatting. It is evident that this is the Eagles subtle way of shunning people.
As we boarded the chartered IRS aircraft, the players, officials, high ranking government functionaries, including Senators, House of Representatives and NFF Board members were instructed to lead the way. Others boarded after them. But it was inside the aircraft that this distasteful scenario happened.
An elderly member of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club was shocked at the way a top Eagles star refused to allow him sit beside him.
Having boarded the aircraft earlier, the star sat at the aisle, spreading his legs majestically. Not even the friendly tap from this elderly supporter could sway the chap. As the elderly one walked towards the inner row, he muttered inaudible words. My heart sank. Another supporter walked towards another Eagles star who sat alone, asking to sit beside him; he refused. I couldn’t stomach this because the airline officials had done a head count and knew the number of vacant seats. I beckoned on one of the airline officials who intervened. Guess what? The irritant chose to sit with another mate, who sat alone in one of the two- seaters. Unwittingly, the aircraft had been fouled by bad blood. Soon, the aircraft was in the skies, flying its two hours 45 minutes course.
With 18 aeronautical miles to the Roberts International Airport in Liberia, the pilot informed us of a final descent, urging us to look towards the left to admire the Atlantic Ocean and its amazing waves.
Then the spectacle for those who have been there would be a smile. In three minutes, the aircraft roared as if it was taking a plunge into the ocean, a big sigh sprang out from the hitherto snoring aircraft of over 93people. Soon, the aircraft found its length on the runway, spending much of 12 minutes flying low on the Atlantic.
Then the panic. AIT’s Wale spoke the mind of many panic-stricken passengers when he said in Yoruba: “Se airplane fe we ninu odo n i(Does the aircraft want to swim?) Then smiles and backslapping as the pilot put the aircraft on the runway to roll to a gradual halt on its tyres.
It was drizzling. There was some turbulence before the final descent. (We were forewarned by the pilot).
Having walked through immigration, I went straight to the elderly supporter to plead with him. Once I raised the issue, his face got winked, but my friend broke into a reluctant smile as I teased him with his favourite song. Before then, he had said in Yoruba: Ade, ori nkan timori. Boy yen o nisorire. (Ade, did you see what I saw? That boy won’t do well), he sighed heavily.
The elderly supporter later withdrew the curse. When the game began, the irritant was one of the culprits who ruined our victory dance. As he fumbled, my mind went to the

Eagles vow to finish off Liberia

Several Super Eagles stars have promised to thrash Liberia next month so as to qualify for the 2013 AFCON.
At the weekend, the Lone Star forced Nigeria to a 2-2 draw in Monrovia.
Eagles defender Efe Ambrose told MTNFootball.com that they will finish the job of securing qualification to the Nations Cup with a big win over Liberia in Calabar.
“We will finish the job in Calabar and book the ticket for Nations Cup. I don’t want to talk about the first leg, but I am looking forward to winning the next game to reach AFCON 2013,” Ambrose said.
CSKA Moscow winger Ahmed Musa also told MTNFootball.com that the Eagles will clinch the ticket to South Africa 2013 in grand style by the second leg on October 13.
He said, “The draw against Liberia was not a bad result, not what we went there for but it is better than losing,” Musa argued.
“We are almost at the next Nations Cup and all we need is to beat them in the return leg in Calabar and book the ticket for 2013 AFCON.”
Eagles striker Emmanuel Emenike also rated the draw in Liberia as a good result as they still have their destiny in their own hands.
“The 2-2 draw was not a bad result for us in such a tough away game, though we wanted to beat them and we were on course for that but they eventually drew level,” the Spartak Moscow star said.
“We have to accept the fact that there are no minnows in football again and all the African teams want to beat Nigeria. We have the ticket in our own hands.
“We have assured President Jonathan of the Nations Cup ticket and we will get it in Calabar.”
