Players threaten boycott of COPA Lagos

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that 10 players and five officials are yet to be paid their match allowances from the 2017 World Cup which took place in the Bahamas in April.

The Captain of the team Isiaka Olawale told NAN that the players were not happy with the development, adding that the team’s endurance had been overstretched.

“As the captain of the team, I’m tired, my teammates keep calling asking me questions I obviously do not have answers to, and it’s so unfortunate.

“As it is now, I’m not sure that players are interested in participating in COPA Lagos as it is, we cannot keep giving our best and they keep treating us like we don’t matter.

“We keep giving our all for the national team, while our clubs suffer, that won’t continue; to whom much is given much is expected.

“I have been trying to calm my team players down, and that’s why we have kept quiet for this long since April, they keep treating us like dirt,’’he said.

The captain told NAN that he had even reached out to the authorities, but to no avail.

“I have called the Minister of Sports, I called the President Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to call their attention to this, but still nothing has been done, in fact they have stopped picking my calls.

“The only person that keeps appealing to us is the Vice-Chairman Seyi Akinwunmi, he picks my calls to assure us, but for how long am I going to keep calling.

“We love our country, but the love for our country will not pay our bills and take care of our families,’’ the captain said.

The Head Coach of the team Audu Ejo, also said the players were not happy.

“My boys are not happy and I honestly sympathise with them; I have gone to NFF boss, LMC boss, Olawale the captain has also made several calls.

“I make sure I go to wherever they are having meetings to remind them, but as we speak nothing has been done.

“Some of my players are soon going to be homeless because they can’t afford their rents,’’ he said.

The coach who has won the COPA Lagos tourney three consecutive times told NAN that the players have categorically told him they won’t answer his call for the Kinetic Sports organised tournament.

“They didn’t mince words with me, they said they won’t play, but I believe they said that due to anger.

“I do go round to appeal to them, that’s what I normally do, I don’t call them on the phone.

“I have to beg, if not for the way I relate with them like they are my children, I don’t know where I will get fresh players to camp for five or ten days and expect results.

“Beach soccer is not easy, it is hard, and if these players don’t play; getting dedicated players will be hard, but I believe the effort of Mr Akinwunmi and Shehu Dikko, will help resolve this.

However, the NFF vice-president, Akinwunmi declined comment on the matter and referred NAN to the Secretary of the federation, Sanusi Mohammed.

All effort to reach the secretary proved abortive.

NAN reports that the COPA Lagos beach soccer tournament will hold from Dec. 8 to Dec. 10 at the Eko Atlantic City, Victoria Island, Lagos.

    Emeteole was aged 66.

Chukwu, who spoke with NAN on Thursday in Enugu, said it was unfortunate for the former coach to depart for the great beyond when his wealth of experience was still needed.

He added that “I am yet to recover from the shocking news of Emeteole’s death yesterday.

“I am personally saddened with the development. Emeteole lived on and for football.

“He was an epitome of everything football, who passionately love the game and gave his best and time to see it grow.

“A good team player and one that understand the need for team-work, and to maintain a united team while as a player in the national team and in all the club sides he had handled.

Chukwu and Emetole were former team mates in the then Green Eagles under the tutelage of late Yugoslavian coach, Tihomir “Tiko” Jelisavčić popularly known as “Father Tiko”

He was also a member of the bronze winning squad at the 10th African Cup of Nations in Ethiopia in 1976.

Emeteole won 17 caps for the national team between 1975 to 1977 and scored four goals.

Popularly known as “Caterpillar”, Emeteole played alongside Idowu Otubusen, Samuel Ojebode, Zion Ogunfehinmi, Kunle Awesu, Muda Lawal, Joe Erico and others too numerous to mention.

He also plied his trade with Rangers International FC of Enugu at the height of the club’s reign in Nigeria and the African continent.

For his coaching career, Emeteole later served as an assistant coach of the Super Eagles.

Between 2007 and 2009, he was the Head Coach of the beach soccer national team, now known as the Super Sand Eagles.

Emetiole also had coaching stints with notable clubs like: Spartan FC later known as Iwuanyanwu Nationale of Owerri, El-Kanemi of Maiduguri, Lobi Stars of Makurdi, and International FC and Rangers International of Enugu.

He led Iwuanyanwu Nationale to the final of CAF Champions League in 2009.

Late camping will affect Super Sand Eagles – Fans

Some fans of Nigeria’s Super Sand Eagles on Monday expressed concern on the effect of late camping on the team’s preparation, ahead of the 2017 Beach Soccer World Cup in Bahamas.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the World Cup will kick off from April 27 to May 7 in Nassau, Bahamas.

NAN reports that the team’s Badagry camp was expected to open on March 12, but due to logistics problems, the players could not resume camping.

Kwamdeen Adams, an IT consultant, said that Nigeria’s fire brigade approach to preparation for international competitions had always back fired.

“I sincerely believe that our administrators should come to an understanding that when players don’t resume camping early, it definitely affects their performance.

“It is not like we have a Beach Soccer League; these players do this out of passion for the sport, and yet, for them to resume camping is war; it is not fair,” Adams said.

Aloma Chukwu, an Underwriter in an Insurance company, said that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) should give other sports the deserved attention.

“Not everybody is a Super Eagles fan. I, in particular, do not believe that any team, no matter how good they are, can succeed without serious preparation.

“We always believe that with two weeks or less in camp, we can perform well; at times we are lucky, but most times we pay dearly for lack of adequate preparation,” Chukwu said.

The Super Sand Eagles will play in Group B alongside Italy, Iran and Mexico at the championship.

Lilian Onuorah, a beautician, said that she would not watch the tournament when it kicks off because our representatives were not ‘magicians’.

“This year, I am not going to give myself any heart attack like I always do while watching in past editions of the tournament.

“For Christ’s sake, these Nigerian players are not magicians; we cannot continue to expect a miracle. God is not stupid, He rewards hard work,’’ she said.

The Head Coach of the team, Audu Ejo, said that he was still waiting for directive from the Technical Department.

“Well, as it is, we are waiting on the technical department to give us the go ahead. I believe any moment from now, we will have the go ahead,” the coach said.

An anonymous source said that the delay in opening the camp could have emanated from the attendance of the just concluded CAF election by some NFF officials.

“Most of the officials were not around because of the CAF election and honestly speaking, the possibility of camping this week is remote.

“You know that the Super Eagles international friendly against Burkina Faso and Senegal will hold this week.

“So, as usual, all attention will be focused on these matches,” she said.

NAN reports that Portugal hosted and won the 2015 edition of the tournament.
