  • Watermelon: The super fruit

    Watermelon: The super fruit

The founder of Pax Herbal Clinic and Research Laboratories, Rev. Father Anselm Adodo, answers the first question. A magnet-therapist,  Dr Cyril Omisande of Cyrillic Holistic Health Clinic, answers the second.

The Harmattan is a season in the West African subcontinent, which occurs between the end of November and the middle of March. It is characterised by dry and dusty north easterly trade wind, of the same name, which blows from the Sahara Desert over West Africa into the Gulf of Guinea.

Have you ever wondered why so many people crave for watermelon and why it is a favourite fruit for many? It is because watermelon is a super nutritious fruit in every sense of the word, an all season fruit.

Watermelon, botanically known as citrullus lanatus, is a native of Africa, originating in the Southern African region. It is a popular fruit in Nigeria. Watermelon grows well in temperate regions, which explains why it grows very well in northern Nigeria such as Plateau State where the climate is less hot. However, watermelon can be cultivated in any part of Nigeria if adequate soil moisture is maintained. It is said that watermelon grew wildly in the African forest over 1000 years ago, from where it was transported to Asia and America, and other parts of the world. Watermelon has been selected and produced as a hybrid, which has resulted in the bigger and sweeter variety that is popular today.

The outer rind of watermelon fruit is green, hard and thick and slightly sour in taste, while the interior is red or pink, succulent and sweet, but not sugary in taste, and contains many seeds. Watermelon is most nutritious when it is fully ripe. For this reason, very ripe watermelon is best if one wants to get its full medicinal values.

Watermelon is known to be very high in Beta-carotene and lycopene when it is very ripe. The rind is also said to be edible, preferably after boiling. A lot of people have asked me if it safe to blend the rind and seeds of watermelon and drink. The answer is yes, there is no harm in blending both the seeds and the rinds of the ripe watermelon fruit. Note, however, that apart from the fibre and roughage, there is little nutrients in the rinds. The ripe interior is the most nutritious and beneficial part of the fruit.

Watermelon is rich in vitamins A, B6, C, calcium, magnesium, protein, potassium, niacin and thiamine. However, lycopene, which is also present in tomato, is the most well-known phytonutrient present in watermelon. Watermelon is made up of 92 per cent water, has little or no fat, is low in sodium and also low in calories.  Fruits like watermelon allow the human body to function optimally because of the high contents of antioxidants. Antioxidants are good protection against cancer, arthritis, diabetes and high blood pressure, while Amino Acids boost the body’s immune system, thereby protecting against all forms of diseases.  Lycopene, which is also present in tomatoes, grapefruits and guava, is beneficial for a healthy heart, strong bone, and helps to prevent prostate cancer.

To really maximise your lycopene intake, let your watermelon fully ripen. The redder your watermelon gets, the higher the concentration of lycopene becomes. Beta-carotene and phenolic antioxidant content also increases as the watermelon ripens. Watermelon seeds are also very nutritious, especially if they are sprouted and shelled. They are high in protein, magnesium, vitamin B and good fats. But do not substitute the seeds or the rinds for the fruit itself. Other benefits of watermelon are:

    Prevents heat stroke

Watermelon is effective in reducing both your body temperature and blood pressure. Many people in tropical regions eat this fruit every day in the afternoon during summer to protect themselves from heat stroke. The high amount of water in watermelon also stimulates a release of excess liquid in the body.

     Treats kidney disorders

Watermelons contain a lot of potassium, which is very helpful in cleaning out the toxic depositions in the kidney. Moreover, they are helpful in reducing the concentration of uric acid in the blood, thereby reducing the chances of kidney damage and the formation of renal calculi in that organ. In addition to this, being high in water content, watermelons induce frequent urinating, which is again helpful for cleaning of the kidneys. Also, the antioxidants present in watermelon ensure good health of the kidneys for a long time and reduce signs of premature aging like wrinkles and age spots on the skin.

    Regulates blood pressure

The amount of potassium and magnesium present in watermelons is very beneficial in terms of lowering blood pressure. Potassium is considered a vasodilator, meaning that it releases the tension on blood vessels and arteries, thereby stimulating blood flow and reducing the stress on the cardiovascular system. The carotenoids present in these fruits also prevent hardening of artery walls and veins, thereby helping to reduce blood pressure and the chances of blood clots, strokes, heart attacks, and atherosclerosis.

    Prevents cancer

Watermelons have gained a lot of attention in recent years, primarily because of their impressive level of lycopene, a carotenoid phytonutrient compound that is increasingly being linked to cancer prevention. Lycopene has been shown to significantly reduce the risks of prostate, breast, colon, lung, and endometrial cancer. All in all, between the antioxidant potential of vitamin C and the impact of lycopene, watermelon is a great anti-cancer fruit!

    Controls diabetes

Diabetics, who are supposed to have a low energy and low sugar diet, often complain about starving since they don’t get to eat their staple diets, which gives them the feeling of being half-fed. Watermelons can be a good supplement for them. In spite of being sweet in taste, a thick wedge will give them very few calories, since ninety-nine percent of its total weight is composed of water and roughage. Moreover, the vitamins and minerals such as potassium and magnesium help in proper functioning of insulin in the body, thus lowering the blood sugar level. Arginine, another component found in watermelons, is very effective at enhancing the impact of insulin on blood sugar. Diabetics can also have curries, steaks, and salads made from watermelon rinds, which are even lower in sugar.

    Heart friendly

Lycopene, a carotenoid found in abundance in watermelon, improves cardiac functions. Beta-carotene, known for its great antioxidant and anti-aging properties, keeps you young at heart and prevents age-related cardiac problems. The roughage in watermelon, along with vitamin C, carotenoids, and potassium (potassium cuts the risk of a heart attack), helps to reduce cholesterol and keep your heart safe from many dangerous conditions.

The best way to eat watermelon is to eat it. It’s as simple as that. Just make sure you go for the very ripe fruit. If you prefer to squeeze out the juice to drink, no problem. Some people prefer to blend the whole fruit: seeds and rinds inclusive, that is also good, provided you keep in mind that the fruit itself is the most nutritious and beneficial, not the seed or the rinds. Want to give yourself a treat? Avoid the temptation to rush to the nearest fast-food shop. Go rather to the nearest local market where you can get yourself a healthy ball of watermelon, which is cheaper than a loaf of bread. Your body will be happy you did.

  • Super Tuesday and American democracy

SIR: It is an incontestable fact that America parades the best and most effective presidential democracy in the world. The origin of this democracy began almost with the emergence of United States of America with the declaration of independence in 1776. After the initial challenges associated with nation building, and after a several trials and errors in fashioning out the best political system for the new nation, the continental congress of 12 consenting states agreed to adopt Presidential Democracy. Since then until now, United States political system had endured a lot of political, social and economic thick and thorns. Beginning with the first president, George Washington, the nation had continued to grow and expand in all aspects of nation building.

As at today, it has had 44 Presidents, endured war of revolution, civil war, several years of segregation against blacks, social inadequacies and major economic down turn and up turns. Yet, the country had continued to absorb and assimilate every social, political and racial upheaval and has grown from strength to strength in its 240 years, it has never had any violent regime change i.e. coup de tat, rather every democratic regime had been through democratic process as outlined in the country’s constitution and its amendments. The kernel of America’s democratic processes lies in the rule of law and the people’s adherence to political process for the election of their presidents and other political offices.

For example, American presidential election takes place on first Tuesday of every November in every four years. Every presidential election is preceded by what is known as party primaries and caucuses. This is a process through which party presidential candidates are selected. The process sometime is highly complicated but once understood, is smooth and peaceful. In each case, each of the two main political parties: the Democratic Party and the Republican Party conducts its primaries in accordance with the laid down procedures.

In the past few months, these two political parties have been engaged in their party primaries.  The climax of American party primaries comes up first Tuesday in March of election year known as “Super Tuesday.” It is referred to as a Super Tuesday because it is the only period that a large number of convention delegates are selected. It is a deciding moment for such presidential aspirants to bow out of the race if they have not done fairly reasonable, because Super Tuesday to many aspirants is the most effective acid test as to whether an aspirant should continue the race or not. For example, after the last Super Tuesday primaries, it has become evident that on the Republican Party side, Donald Trump is the front runner while on the Democratic side; Hillary Clinton is the person to beat.

From the beginning of the party primaries exercises last January, some aspirants have bowed out, including Jeff Bush, the younger brother of a former US President, George W. Walker Bush. In fact, American presidential party primaries must be seen as a gradual elimination process for all the presidential aspirants because this process is spread across the country over about a period of six months. So by the end of the party primaries in June, each of the presidential candidates must have known the prospects of their electability depending on the number of convention delegates each must have garnered.

It is very different from party conventions in Nigeria where presidential aspirants usually go to conventions with trailer load of currencies and cash with agents to buy convention delegates. We can remember the show of shame in PDP convention at Jos where retired generals acted as purchasing agents to buy delegates for Obasanjo to defeat Ekwueme. That was the beginning of the downfall of today’s downturn in PDP fortune. Therefore, for the party to bounce back, it must adopt free and fair congresses and conventions. There is no alternative to this.

  • 4real out with Super video

But with Super, the Kakuri, Kaduna State-born singer appears to be taking his place in the Nigerian music space.

In the last quarter of last year, 4real’s Super, not only ranked among the highly downloaded Nigerian songs online, it enjoyed heavy rotation on radio. And while the song continues to garner fans for the artiste, who is the first to be signed to Don Maseratte music label, its anticipated video has just been released. Shot by the award-winning music video director, Clarence Peters, the work was said to have gulped several millions of naira to produce.

According to the Artiste, “To be candid, we don’t have intention of shooting the video, but the rate at which people accepted the song, gave us a second thought, and the demand for the video propelled us to hit the location with Clarence Peters, one of the most sought-after music video directors in Nigeria. The track is very fortunate, as I have other songs begging for videos.”

As if this was not enough, 4real is also out with a new song titled Stylee, which he said is a New Year gift for his fans. The song was produced by More Money.

“With the way my career is going right now,” said the burgeoning artiste, “I so much believe that the sky is my starting point. I rarely settle for less and I always try to give my fans the best. • Pepe targets Super Cup glory

Real Madrid centre-back Pepe believes the European champions have a “responsibility” to win the UEFA Super Cup.

The Portugal international was in action as UEFA Champions League holders Real drew 1-1 with Inter in the International Champions Cup in California on Saturday, before losing 3-2 on penalties.

Real are partaking in the pre-season tournament as they prepare for the new campaign.

Pepe revealed that coach Carlo Ancelotti is working the team hard in pre-season, but the 31-year-old accepts that will stand them in good stead for their quest for trophies in 2014-15 – which starts with the Super Cup against Liga rivals Sevilla on August 12.

“The truth is the coach demands a lot of us,” he is quoted as saying by Marca.

“We’re here to pick up the pace. We will be ready for the Super Cup. It’s a trophy and we have a responsibility to everyone. We want to win it.

“Madrid, on the pitch, always has to win. We know that we have to go game by game and each game is very difficult, but we have to prove ourselves on the field.”

Pepe also spoke of his excitement at playing in a side that will contain Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo and James Rodriguez.

“Gareth’s had two weeks training and he looks great,” he added. “He’s got incredible ability and will be a very important this year.

“Cristiano had time to relax and unwind with his family. He’s well and I think he’ll be at his best.

On Rodriguez, who joined from Monaco for a reported fee of around €80million last week, he added: “He’s a very talented player. I saw him when he played at Porto and he has a very good left foot.

“It’s amazing that Madrid have signed such a great player.”

  • Iheanacho, a super star in the making

Iheanacho, a super star in the making

Kelechi Iheanacho was always going to be a star. Most Nigerians never doubted his precocious and prodigious talent as soon as they watched him play for the Golden Eaglets.

Along with Prince Izu Omego, Yahaya Umar, Ifeanyi Matthew and Success Isaac, Iheanacho was among the brightest sparks as Nigeria finished second at the 2013 African U-17 Championship in Morocco.

However, powerful striker, Isaac was widely regarded at the time as Nigeria’s best player but fate was to play a role in Iheanacho’s rise to prominence.

Four goals in Nigeria’s opening game at the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup against Mexico coupled with an unfortunate injury to Isaac in the next group game against Sweden meant the burden of expectations was now heavily laid on the shoulders of Iheanacho.

He did not disappoint. He led from the front with several inspirational displays and also weighed in with his fair share of crucial goals as Nigeria won the U17 title for a record fourth time.

Iheanacho’s eye-catching displays did not go unnoticed as he was named winner of the golden ball-accolade reserved for best player of the tournament.

It was only a matter of time before he joined a big European side and Manchester proved to be his destination.

The City manager, Manuel Pellegrini is a wily, shrewd individual with a sharp eye for unheralded talent and he wasted no time in throwing Iheanacho into the deep and against Kansas City in City’s opening pre-season game.

Iheanacho did not let the Chilean down as he completely ran the show with a display that typified class, ease of movement, quick thinking and impeccable passing.

The teenager shone against Kansas, dictating play for City, testing the opposition goalkeeper with several blistering drives.

He struck the final nail in the coffin of the MLS leaders with a well-taken fourth goal as City ran out 4-1 winners.

Pellegrini was effusive in his praise of the 17-year-old after the game as he described him as “the future’ of the club.

“Kelechi is just 17 years old and he’s a very important player for us in the future.

“He demonstrated today what he can do in the future. It depends on the way he takes this profession, but I think he’s a good talent,” the former Real Madrid Boss said. Iheanacho excels as deep-lying number 10, and is seemingly most effective playing behind the striker. As he proved against Kansas City, he has a very keen eye for a pass and is blessed with wonderful creativity for a player so young. He however declared that many felt he did not have a future as a professional footballer.

“A lot of the boys thought maybe I was too small, too skinny to be a good player. But I realised now with that God is preparing something special for me,” he said.

  • Eagles so Super, says Abubarkar

Dolphins chief coach, Hassan Abubarkar has showered praises on the Super Eagles of Nigeria for their marvelous showing at the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON 2013.

Abubarkar said on Thursday that leading the Eagles to the final after thirteen years is a feat that must not be taken lightly.

“Keshi has shown us once again the reason why we should be patient with our coaches. After all the complaints that the team was not doing well and the fact that the team seemingly did not start well at the competition, their last two games have shown they have began to play like true Eagles.

“I believe he got the choice of players to take for the competition right and he also got his tactics right,” Abubarkar said.

The new Dolphins man added that the showing of Godfrey Oboabona, Sunday Mba and Ejike Uzoenyi so far in the competition is a good advertisement for the Nigerian league.

“For a long time people have spoken badly of the league but this risk Keshi took has told the world that there is still quality personnel in the Nigerian league and I assure you there are many more playing in the League who just desire a chance to show the stuff they are made of.”

Having reach the AFCON final, Hassan says the Eagles have all it takes to fly all the way to winning the trophy on Sunday against Burkina Faso.
