  • AFCON on SuperSport: Morocco, Senegal advance as Nigeria, Egypt fight for bronze

AFCON on SuperSport: Morocco, Senegal advance as Nigeria, Egypt fight for bronze

Nigeria’s AFCON campaign ended on Wednesday night after a 4–2 penalty shootout loss to hosts Morocco in the semi-finals. Senegal earlier booked their place in Sunday’s final with a 1–0 win over Egypt in Tangier.

Nigeria and Egypt will contest the third-place playoff while Morocco face Senegal in the Final on Sunday. Both games will be live on SuperSport on DStv and GOtv.

Despite Nigeria arriving as one of the tournament’s most prolific sides, the Super Eagles were restricted to limited attacking opportunities as Morocco controlled large spells of the contest. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali made one save in the shootout, but misses from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi proved decisive.

Earlier on Wednesday, Senegal secured their place in the final with a 2–1 victory over Egypt in Tangier. The defending champions struck first through Sadio Mané before Egypt responded, but a late Senegalese goal settled the encounter and ended Mohamed Salah’s hopes of adding a second AFCON title.

The result sets up an AFCON 2025 final between Morocco and Senegal, scheduled for Sunday at 9:00 pm, with both sides aiming to cap impressive tournament runs. Morocco continue to benefit from home support and defensive organisation, while Senegal arrive with knockout-stage experience and momentum from their title defence.

Nigeria and Egypt will now meet in the third-place playoff tomorrow at 6:00 pm, offering both teams the opportunity to finish the tournament with a podium place.

For Nigeria, the match provides a chance to recover from penalty disappointment after a campaign marked by strong defensive displays and emphatic victories earlier in the competition.

Both games will be broadcast live on the SuperSport AFCON dedicated channel (GOtv Ch. 59, DStv Ch. 202) with Open Access available to DStv Yanga and GOtv Jolli subscribers. In fact, if you just reconnect, you’ll be given the next higher package.

  • Mohamed Salah Emerges SuperSport Player of the Month

Liverpool and Egyptian star, Mohamed Salah is Supersport’s pick for the November 2018 Player of the Month.

The Sports TV network finds Salah worthy of the feat as he is back to his signature showstopping play-manship despite his slow start this season,

Salah helped Liverpool secure a 3-0 away win over Watford, which kept them in touch with Premier League pacesetters Manchester City. The 26-year-old opened the scoring at Vicarage Road to pave the way for an emphatic Reds victory, which also featured goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino.

The Egyptian was thrown under the bus by critics for a solid but unspectacular start to the 2018/19 season. However, things have been looking up for him since the middle of October.  The winger has scored eight goals and provided two assists for club and country and also managed to become the fastest player to ever reach the 50-goal mark for Liverpool.

Additionally, Salah has been shortlisted for the prestigious BBC African Footballer of the Year award which he is widely expected to win for a second successive time.

Salah’s combination of strong performances and his humble, down-to-earth demeanour have earned him praise from his fellow professionals. Brighton & Hove Albion’s Cameroonian defender Gaetan Bong believes even if Salah is not scoring, his attacking contribution is always a positive one.

“He has everything, he’s top scorer,” Bong told BBC Sports. “He is a good player and good on the ball, strong and always working hard. You might not see it sometimes but when you are on the pitch, he is making a lot of runs, a lot of strong runs.”

Veteran Ivorian attacker Gervinho (who was a candidate for this Player of the Month after becoming the top-scoring African in the Serie A this season) was a teammate of Salah’s at Italian giants Roma and believes the hard work the Egyptian puts in at the gym underscores his on-pitch brilliance.

“Salah is a tough guy,” the Parma attacker told the Guardian. “Always calm and strong, with the mentality of a hard worker.

“I’ll never forget his training sessions: very high rhythm, pushed like a madman, you watched him in amazement. He had a sort of positive effect – you saw Salah and wanted to work harder. Talent and sacrifice.”

  • African Player of the Month: SuperSport Picks Aubameyang

SuperSport has picked Arsenal and Gabon international, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the African Player for the Month of November 2018.

The 29-year-old featured in four matches for Arsenal through the month and racked up five goals and an assist in just 221 playing minutes for the Gunners. He also played the full game for his national team Gabon as they claimed an important 3-0 win over South Sudan in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Auba, as he is fondly known, has established himself as an incredible ‘impact’ player under new Arsenal manager Unai Emery. The Panthers attacker came off the bench to brilliant effect in Premier League matches against Fulham and Leicester this month.

Against the Cottagers he racked up two goals and an assist, while his cameo against the Foxes also featured two strikes – and this was in a combined 57 minutes of play!

In addition, the former Borussia Dortmund man also started and scored a goal in Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace this past weekend – bringing their unbeaten run to 12 matches across all competitions.

The Gunners are probably too early in their development under Emery to be considered true title contenders in the Premier League, but with Auba – and his great partnership with French forward Alexandre Lacazette – they know that they have the firepower to strike fear into any opposition.

There is no competition over who scored more goals. Maybe in training we do because it helps us to improve but not in the weekend,” said Lacazette in regards to his relationship with the Gabonese star.

He added: “If Auba scores 40 goals, we finish in the Champions League and win something then I will be happy. This season we just want to win something.”

Aubameyang is not the only African to have impressed in the Premier League through the month of October. The Liverpool duo of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah appear to have rediscovered their peak form in the last few weeks, and the showdown between the pair and Auba when Arsenal host Liverpool on the first weekend of November promises to be awesome.

In addition, Riyad Mahrez has found his feet at Manchester City and is beginning to thrive under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola. The Algerian scored a brilliant goal and put in a great overall performance in a 5-0 win over Burnley, and was also the match-winner in the Citizens’ 1-0 triumph away to Tottenham Hotspur on October 29.

The former Leicester City star dedicated his goal against Spurs to the Foxes’ late club owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, who died in a tragic helicopter accident near the King Power Stadium this past weekend.

“The boss was very special to me. I spent four and a half years there and have many memories with him,” explained the North Africa attacker.

“He was such a good person and had a big heart. It was heart-breaking and shocking for me to hear this news and for all of the other people who died with him. I am with Leicester and the family of the victims.”
