Iwobi to Arsenal fans: Support Wenger

ALEX IWOBI has demanded Arsenal fans show Arsene Wenger the respect he deserves.

Wenger has been criticised by a section of the Arsenal faithful this term, after falling out of the title race and crashing out of the Champions league at the last-16 stage.

Despite calls for the Frenchman to end his 20-year reign at the North London club, Iwobi has leapt to Wenger’s defence.

Iwobi said:”Yeah, they [the fans] need to have a bit more respect in my opinion. I mean, he’s been at the club for 20 years, he’s achieved a lot.

“Obviously they’re a bit impatient with the results and where they want to finish. We also want to finish there, we want to win the league like anyone else, I can guarantee we are trying our hardest.

“Everyone gets criticised, there’s always going to be arguments no matter what team you’re playing at, so we just have to overcome it.”

Iwobi added: “I tell you, we’re working as hard as we can to improve, everyone’s fighting for the manager, I can tell you that for a fact, everyone’s trying to prove ourselves.

The Nigerian international revealed the players are just as much in the dark about the manager’s future as the fans.

“I’m waiting as much as you guys are. I don’t know exactly what’s going on. But me, personally, I’d like him to stay.

“No matter who is in the job, or who gets the role, we’re always going to fight for the manager, every player always gives 100 per cent, no matter what, we’ll just play.”

The youngster is keen to back the man who gave him his debut and claimed the team did their best to ignore the Wenger Out banners and protesting planes at The Hawthorns last weekend.

Iwobi said: “It wasn’t hard to miss that! [the planes] But I was looking it like ‘Oh, wow, they’ve gone to a great amount just to say something’. But we just ignore and do our jobs on the pitch.

“For what he’s done for me, I’d like to say thank you, for bringing me in to such a world-class team, and I’m playing almost regularly. If he stays, if he goes, I’ll just have to do my job and do my best for the team.”

  • What are you doing to support girls?

What are you doing to support girls?

I recently stumbled on an inspiring article online by a young lady about what she is doing to support girls in her community. I was interested in the piece because I have a girl child and know many girls who should be supported to maximise their potential.

The piece which is reproduced below is a confirmation of the fact that the task of development is not that of the government alone but for everyone to contribute his or her own quota.

We can blame governments at all levels for not doing one thing or the other, but the question we should ask ourselves is what I am doing to make my community better.

It doesn’t matter how little your contribution may be, but the aggregation of the efforts of all will go a long way in improving the standard of living of not only girls, but everyone that deserves our support.

Read on the account by Jennifer Umeh, a social entrepreneur and student empowering girls in rural communities:

I shouldn’t be shamed for sharing my pains, struggles and life experiences. No girl deserves to be slammed or termed ‘attention-seeking’ or ‘too sensitive’ for sharing her story. Our stories need to be told because in them is the hope for survival for every young woman.

My life’s journey epitomises, to a great extent, the challenges faced by the African girl child. I have been through most of the issues plaguing young women, from domestic abuse , low self-esteem and everything else in between. Walking young women through their ordeals is a mutual healing process as it helps me as much as it does them.

While visiting the motherless babies home in my community, I considered it my duty to mentor them, put smiles on their faces and help them make the right life choices. Gradually, this mentoring circle grew to become a house hold name in humanitarian sector.

Our programmes inspire girls to have an independent voice, confidence and problem-solving capacity to speak up, be decision makers and create social change. To address this, the Hope for African Girls Initiative has a conference for young girls as well as outreach programmes for primary and secondary schools.

In addition, to debunk the myth that young women are naturally faced with Inferiority Complex, we created a platform for all the volunteers. Here, we come together in an informal setting to discuss issues relevant to girls, share opportunities, advertise and have meaningful debates about girl issues in Africa.

Our approach is the first of its kind. Our structure includes a board, a committee, and volunteers. Our diversity reveals the implicit beauty of our differences and we are determined to do much more.

Through our several social media platforms, we invite volunteers to contribute to our planned projects. Most times, our outreach programmes were carried out by the volunteers and our growing membership increases the need to incorporate a wide range of issues facing every young girl. We work closely with other NGOs while monitoring progress through the appropriate authorities.

I am that strong girl that everyone knew would make it through the worst. I am that fearless girl, the one who would dare to do anything. I am that girl who never backs down.

    I am Jennifer Umeh

    I am bold for change

‘BoA ‘ll be restructured to support diversification’

The Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbe has said  there is no going back on restructuring and repositioning of the Bank of Agriculture (BoA) to aide in diversifying the economy from over-dependence on oil as the major stay of the country’s economy.

Speaking yesterday in Kaduna during the launch of: Capacity Building and Institutional Strengthening of Bank of Agriculture Project, the minister said President Muhammadu Buhari has  given the approval for the restructuring and repositioning of the  bank.

Represented by Mr. Godwin Obinna Opara of Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said, Ogbe said: “Restructuring, capitalising and repositioning of BoA is one of such programmes through which President Buhari has given his approval judging that its remains a key instruments required for funding agricultural activities to help diversify the economy away from this over-reliance on oil.

“At no other time in the history of Nigeria that government has taken such interest and time to assess the operations of BoA with a view to exploring these potentials by promotion of agricultural practice through initiating and adopting appropriate financing measures needed. He added,  “Our country currently needs a financing mechanism that will help small holder farmers, agro-prenurials and SMEs access credit facilities at affordable cost. As a matter of fact, we’re looking at single digit interest rate, that’s what we believe in the Ministry.”

The Special Adviser to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor on Development Finance Institutions (DFIs), Mr. Paul Eluhaiwe said  BoA is sick and needs restructuring.

He however, noted that BoA has all the resources to turn its fortunes for better. “Posterity will not forgive us if we fail to turn it around because the bank has all the resources in this world to be turned around for the good of Nigerian farmers,” he said.

The Director-General, Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Dr. Vincent Akpotaire,  said BoA will be restructured  to meet a model that will help it do business, particularly with rural populace that are into agricultural business.

“Specifically, policy and regulation of the BoA will undergo due restructuring, staff capacity, financial base, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) of the bank will be restructured to meet international standard in agro-allied enterprises.

“I wonder why BoA will not succeed in Nigeria if others have succeeded somewhere else in the world; there must be check and balance in loan being giving out, BoA should not just be a conduit for giving out loan, it should also be a conduit to recovering the loan being giving out,” Akpotaire said.

  • Group urges Fed Govt to pay agric support debt

The Federal Government and the Ministry of Agriculture have been urged to pay the outstanding debts owed previous participants of the Growth Enhancement Support Scheme (GES)  programme to encourage everyone’s participation in actualising of government’s high food production and agricultural diversification.

The GES programme  is an offshoot of the Agricultural Transformation Agenda encouraging firms to supply fertilsers and seeds to 2500 agro dealers for delivery to farmers.

Nigeria Renascent Group, a proactive pressure group, in a statement in Lagos, stated  that with the prevailing situation in the country, vis-à-vis government action to agriculture, famine is imminent in the country, if the government does not  act fast by ensuring that important agricultural stakeholders are brought into the project of creating food for all.

It, therefore, urged the government to pay the debts owed previous participants of the GES programme for this to materialise.

In the statement signed by Mr. Abdulrasaq Lawal, the group stated: “The zest at which participants engaged in the GES programme, which saw many farmers smile and employment figure rising, has diminished.

“The reason is not far-fetched. Many of those who participated actively and whole heartedly have since stopped because they cannot continue, owing to the huge debt of over N47 billion naira owed them by the Federal Government. While the few others who are participating now are doing so with measured involvement to avoid inactivity”.

The group urged the government to “get all stakeholders on board by first settling the outstanding debts owed to them”.

“This will serve as an impetus and will make them enthusiastic and give them the zeal to go all the way in seeing to the success of government diversification to agriculture policy,” the statement said.

  • ‘Senior citizens need support’

What do you do with the elderly? Look on with disinterest or mock their frailty and wait for them to pass on?

No, said former governor of Anambra State Peter Obi. They need your support.

Speaking during a visit to the Old People’s Home run by the Immaculate Heart of Mary’s Sisters at Nkpor, Anambra State, Mr Obi described support for such causes as authentic Christian charity.

Speaking further, Obi said that one of the joys of growing old is for those one cared for in his youth to also care for one in his old age with understanding and love.

The former governor commended the sisters for their efforts, calling on the youth to emulate such noble pursuits by taking care of their aged ones.

Receiving a N2 million cheque on behalf of the Congregation, the Mother General, Rev. Sr Mary Claude Oguh thanked Obi for his love for humanity, which she said the former governor has demonstrated at every opportunity both as governor and as private person.

Sr. Mary Claude said that their Congregation, in the Catholic tradition, would keep on attending to the spiritual and material needs of the people as much as they could.
