  • I regret supporting Buhari, says Kwankwaso

Former Kano State Governor Abiu Musa Kwankwaso has said he and others who dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2014, to support President Muhammadu Buhari against then President Goodluck Jonathan, are regretting their action.

Kwankwaso, a presidential aspirant, who was in Owerri, the Imo State capital, on a consultation visit to PDP members, condemned President Buhari’s approach to “reviving the economy”.

The senator condemned the poor state of infrastructure in the Southeast, saying the anomaly could only be corrected by a change of government at the centre next year.

He hoped that the PDP would form the government at the centre and in many states.

Kwankwaso said Nigerians were fed up with the All Progressives Congress (APC), “and will be happy seeing PDP return to power.”

“From North to South, the citizens are looking for a government that will not place emphasis on religion, ethnicity and culture, but national development. The PDP government shall bring development, create platforms and provide jobs for Nigerians.

“I have been in Southeast in the last few days. The state of infrastructure in this region is incredible. It is either that the government lacks the capacity to improve the economy or something. Electricity is important in this country. The people need a government that will be just and provide employment for teeming young Nigerians,” he said.

Elder statesman and PDP Board of Trustee (BoT) member Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu described Kwankwaso as a good material for the president.

He urged Nigerians to join PDP to “vote out a government that has failed the country.”

State PDP Chairman Charles Ezekwem, represented by his Deputy, Martin Ejiogu, said the Igbo would only vote for a presidential candidate that would restructure the country and create an additional state in the region.

  • BoI to receive ICAN award for supporting MSMEs

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has nominated the Bank of Industry (BoI) for this year’s edition of its merit award  slated for April 28 in Lagos.

The nomination was in recognition of BoI’s outstanding contributions to the growth of businesses and the nation’s economy.

The institute said the bank was being recognised in the corporate body category of its merit award.

ICAN said having reviewed BoI’s activities in the last one year, it found that BoI has recorded remarkable improvements in supporting Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in line with one of the priorities of the Federal Government.

The institute said, for instance, that a review of activities during the 2016 financial year showed that BoI’s loans approvals as at December 2016 rose by nine per cent to N150 billion, compared to N138.5 billion achieved in 2015.

Indeed, disbursements to MSMEs also went up by 42 per cent within the same period to N8 billion, from N5.64 billion in 2015, while the bank’s wide ratio of non-performing loans (NPL) reduced to 3.87 per cent in 2016, from 5.75 per cent in 2015.

Also, BoI’s operating Profit Before Tax (PBT) rose to N17.4b in 2016, from N11.95b in 2015, representing 46 per cent increase.

“All these culminated in BoI’s ratings by international and domestic rating agencies being upgraded and affirmed throughout 2016.

“While Moody’s assigned BoI Aa1 in 2016, up from Ba3 of 2015, Agusto’s rating of AA- in 2016 was higher than A+ of 2015. AA+ assigned by Fitch in 2015 was affirmed in February 2017”, the bank stated in a statement.

In the last one year, BoI had taken bold steps to implement the economic programmes of the Federal and state governments in collaboration with domestic and foreign development partners.

The bank noted that conscious efforts have continued to be made towards evolving a favourable ecosystem for SMEs in Nigeria and further deepen its credit delivery process and have it revitalised for speed and efficiency.

These include expansion of the bank’s branch network, automation of its operations and equipping youths with relevant business skills in solid minerals, agro processing as well as cotton, textile and garmenting.

  • Those who attacked us for supporting Buhari now parade themselves as his foremost supporters—Buhari Friends Organisation President Okon

Those who attacked us for supporting Buhari now parade themselves as his foremost supporters—Buhari Friends Organisation President Okon

Saint Athanasius Okon is the National President, Buhari Friends Organisation Network, a socio-political group. He contested the election into Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly on the platform of All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in 2007 and contested same under the Action Congress of Nigeria (CAN) before contesting for a seat in the House of Representatives in 2011 on the platform of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). He spoke with OLUGBENGA ADANIKIN on the activities of the NGO as well as his concerns about the goings on in the polity.

What is your position on Akwa Ibom politics and speculations concerning recent appointments by the President?

Firstly, let me introduce myself, as Saint Athanasius Okon, from Uyo Senatorial District, Akwa Ibom State, a core All Progressives Congress (APC) member, registered with AkI/IBI-03002461. I started active politics in 2003 on the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). Interestingly, I contested elections to represent my state constituency, Ibiono Ibom, for Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, on the opposition ANPP in 2003, won the primary election and stood for the general election against the PDP and other parties’ candidates. But for the massive rigging of the said election by the ruling PDP government in Akwa Ibom State. I could have won the election with a landslide, even as my first entry into the political arena. I was indeed the preferred a candidate in my local government.

After four years, precisely 2007, as my people were not getting the much needed quality representation in the state’s House of Assembly, I was compelled once again to re-contest in 2007, this time on the platform of Action Congress (AC). As a founding member of Action Congress in Akwa Ibom as well as at the national level, I did my best to ensure that the party was really embraced by my constituency and indeed Akwa Ibom as a whole, since the government of PDP was not really providing the expected dividend of democracy, considering the amount of money accruing from the 13 per cent derivation and internally generated revenue.

Indeed, AC was really accepted, with Mr. James Iniama as the governorship candidate. But despite the yearnings of the people of Akwa Ibom for a positive change to have a people friendly government in place, the ruling party, the PDP, still refused to let go and went ahead to rig the 2007 election. But even with what actually transpired as were witnessed at the elections tribunal, they still had their way with strong backing from Abuja. Again, history repeated itself, as I have to remain consistent in my ideological belief to be in the progressive, since the emphasis was on the emancipation of the proletariat, the downtrodden.

In the year 2011, apart from being a founding member of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), I also contested the primary and general election on CPC’s platform for the House of Representatives, to represent Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency. Once again, as usual, I stood my ground, didn’t step down or withdrew for fear of the usual PDP attacks and intimidation, including killings/kidnapping of opposition candidates. In 2011, nobody, including the prominent faces today who are now born again, embraced the APC government. Those who are pretending to be new members could not openly tolerate the name Buhari in Akwa Ibom. I was personally attacked by some of them for defending Buhari. It took God and the former DSS Director, a man I don’t remember his name now but know is from Plateau State, to save my life from the agents of the PDP. I was physically attacked, embarrassed for supporting him and for contesting election on the same platform as Buhari.

Were you the only contestant attacked in Akwa Ibom?

A number of us then in an area completely dominated by PDP were in the opposition, so we were prone to attacks. There was no wealthy man in Akwa Ibom State who could have taken such a risk except a few of us, the poor, who supported the ruling party. Since politics and party affiliation should as a matter of fact be based on ideology, I think my actions and those of other few members of the opposition then and today are ideology-based, and we are really proud to witness the emergence of President Buhari, a popular stone openly rejected by the same builders that have come through the back doors and benefited from his government.

What really surprised me lately is the fact that people like Senator Ita Enang, Senator Udo Udoma, Mr. Nsima Ekere and finally Mr. Frank Samuel George, are all from the PDP, and I want to be challenged here. As I have volunteered my party’s membership registration number, apart from being a bona fide member of ANPP, AC and the CPC, let them come forward and present same for us to really appreciate who actually worked and who benefited. Apart from Senator Udoma, a known PDP man, who up till this moment has not opened his mouth to profess APC, the rest three, from my findings, claimed to be members of APC. Therefore, I challenge them to bring out their membership registration number to show when they came on board, as there is no justice where those who toiled and suffered persecution from PDP people are indeed the ones relegated to the background while erstwhile tormentors are those calling the shots.

Are you saying the President was wrong in his choice of appointees?

No. I feel there is a syndicate that wrongly advised the President because he is unfamiliar with Akwa Ibom politics. Apart from coming from the same Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, both the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator (Barrister) Udoma and Mr. Nsima Ekere, who was one of the PDP governorship aspirants in 2015; a former deputy governor to Mr. Godswil Akpabio, are from the same Ikot Abasi federal constituency. The two had been prominent PDP members since 1999, and can hardly join a non-ruling party, being rich men and powerful.

Again, the one called Mr. Frank Samuel George, a known special Adviser to Mr. Godswill Akpabio, a PDP man to the core, who never can tolerate both the name Buhari and APC during political campaigns is from Onna Local Government Area, same as the current governor of Akwa Ibom State. So, put together, all of them, except Senator Ita Enang who is from Uyo senatorial district, are from one senatorial district, Eket.

In view of the foregoing, I am compelled to ask if Mr. President was given this important information with regard to these new APC acclaimed members and where they come from, to avoid breaching the federal character principle. A case study here is what happened to one of the key supporters of Mr. President from Niger State during the ministerial appointment. I remember that after findings proved that a ministerial nominee from Niger State was indeed from the same constituency as the current governor, his nomination was withdrawn by the President for someone else who today is the Minister of State, Solid Mineral Resources, Hon. Bawa Bwari. And it is a fact that the minister in question here is from a different federal constituency and senatorial district. I stand to be corrected.

Why are you concerned about these appointments? It appears most APC members in Akwa Ibom are satisfied with the President’s choice. What do you stand to gain if they are relieved of their appointments?

My answers are very simple. As well known, the average Akwa Ibom person is not interested in things they believe they lack the power and capacity to challenge, especially when it concerns the rich and influential in the society, for fear of intimidation and threats. Another reason here is the fact that majority of Akwa Ibom people today are still being controlled and directed by the influential PDP people, who perhaps use their capacity in position of authority to influence their choice of reasoning.

Again, since Akwa Ibom is still under the control of the PDP government, the rest of the APC extraction, with high level of poverty, are afraid to come out and speak. Rather, they may not mind going to see the possibility of associating with the new arrivals, perhaps they may be lucky to be carried along. Finally, most of the genuine APC members, the real suffering ones, who laboured, toiled for years, praying to God for His intervention and for the change which, by the grace of God, we have today, are still wondering what has suddenly taken place. They still believe what has happened is a dream story and cannot be seen to be real in the average man’s imagination.

As for me, am indeed compelled to speak in respect of this ugly trend, believing that Mr. President was indeed not properly briefed about the backgrounds of the aforementioned appointees. The Niger State’s case has established a precedent. I can quote him exactly: “Those who just decamped and joined the APC in order to get comfort and benefits should forget it, as it would not be possible.” He would carry along and appoint to work with him only those he knows so much as associates, who laboured and toiled with him right from the era of the ANPP, up till the APC.

So, considering the fact that I am a known APC member, a proper Buhari supporter who at no time decamped from my ideological belief and principled stance of President Buhari, one of the very few in Akwa Ibom who, even the PDP members themselves can attest to, the only name apart from Group Captain Sam Ewang (rtd) known amongst the Akwa Ibom media to have been so vociferous in the campaign for Buhari’s emergence, the only one apart from Ewang that would go to a known private radio station via Politics Today to defend the person of General Buhari. The others never spared either Buhari or APC during the campaign era, as they were busy working for themselves and Goodluck Jonathan to continue.

Even on the floor of the Senate, where Senator Enang was during the campaign period, his stance was indeed obvious. My question is, if Ita Enang had won the primary election for his second term in the Senate, which he never contested via the APC platform but his Party, the PDP, would he have come to embrace Buhari? If he and others who are the major beneficiaries today had supported Buhari genuinely, I think the right time should have been when a few senators of the PDP decided to join the struggle and certainly not after the battle has been won and lost. He himself, the first beneficiary from Akwa Ibom in Buhari’s government, should have joined us based on his love for the man Buhari and his stance against indiscipline and other social vices, including corruption, whom he has now found comfort to be speaking for today.

Don’t you think their appointments will indirectly benefit the people of Akwa Ibom State, irrespective of party differences?

As far as I am concerned, none of the above mentioned appointees from Akwa Ibom, has enjoyed the support and encouragement of genuine APC members in the state. I stand to be corrected. None of their appointments have ever been celebrated by the people of Akwa Ibom. I mean both the poor masses and genuine APC members. They are certainly not popular among the down trodden and the average electorate. Here, I mean political value. I wish to challenge these privileged appointees to come up with a fact that they indeed supported the emergence of President Buhari, not certain APC friends here.

Where were these names when I led the Buhari Friends Organisation Network for a South South political rally in Uyo, which attracted supporters from all the six states of the South-South? Even a great number came in solidarity from the South West. I have documented records of all this, including when we were attacked by their party members, etc. If these calibers of men were behind me and others for Buhari, I think a lot could have been achieved in Akwa Ibom then. Up till this moment, the only known physical structure which every sane person in Akwa Ibom, irrespective of political affiliation, including the media, identify with the name Buhari can be found at N0 61, Udotungubo Street, off Oron Road, Uyo; the Buhari Friends Organization Network Office donated by Group Captain Sam Ewang, a national patron from the State.

This structure is known to have been there since January, 2014, when the names mentioned above were still very active PDP officials who never gave us a chance. The name Buhari, to them and their associates today, was an abomination, while people like us were seen and called agents of Boko Haram. Since APC, to most of them, was known and addressed as a dead party with a dead presidential candidate. In view of the above, I am personally forced by my conscience and the pressure I got daily from genuine supporters of Buhari who really suffered and were beaten mercilessly by supporters and agents of some of the born again beneficiaries, I am compelled to speak out. None of these names has done anything in form of financial contribution or other logistical materials, including open identification with the Buhari agenda in the 2015 political campaign and suffering, compare to myself and other genuine APC members.

As I speak here, I think no one else can be called a major APC stakeholder in Akwa Ibom State more than myself, Group captain Sam Ewang and a few others, considering the level of sacrifice we put in place, therefore the need for me to finally open up to convince the teeming supporters and members of the

Buhari Friends Organization family in Akwa Ibom State that I am not in support of the recent developments. I wish to finally plead with Mr. President, as a man of probity, fairness and justice, to address some of these anomalies, find out the true feelings of the average genuine APC member in my state, Akwa Ibom, as the few privileged elites would hardly avail him the exact position on ground.

Wike admits supporting PDP candidate with N2bn

The Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, has admitted that he supported the Edo State candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Osagie Ize-Iyamu, not militants, with N2 billion.

Wike spoke yesterday in Port Harcourt, the Rivers capital, through the state’s Commissioner for Information and Communications, Dr. Austin Tam-George.

The Rivers governor, who is a former Minister of State for Education, also denied the insinuation that he and his Delta State counterpart, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, mobilised militants to rig the Edo governorship election in favour of the PDP.

Wike reacted to allegation by Edo Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, that the two Niger Delta governors donated N2 billion for the postponed governorship poll, claiming that he (Wike) never made such financial donation.

He said: “Governor Wike has no links with militants in the region and anywhere else in the country. He has only given moral support to the PDP candidate in Edo State to overcome the ineptitude and dysfunction the All Progressives Congress (APC) imposed on the people.”

The Rivers governor also declared that he would continue to give moral support to democratic forces, not just in the crude oil and gas-rich region, but across Nigeria, to bring better life to people of the country.

Wike called on the people of Edo state to ensure that whenever the governorship election held, they would stand firm in defence of their sovereign right to vote for the PDP.

  • No regret supporting Jonathan, says Ubah

No regret supporting Jonathan, says Ubah

Businessman and politician Dr.Ifeanyi Ubah yesterday reflected on the activities of the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN) during the last election, saying that he has no regret supporting former President Goodluck Jonathan.

He also rejected the popular view that TAN is a tool of propaganda, stressing that the group only showcased the achievements of the former President before Nigerians.

Ubah, the Chairman of Capital Oil and gas Limited, also dismissed insinuations that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is hunting him, following the arrest in London of former Petroleum Minister Mrs. Diezani Aloson-Madueke, for alleged financial crimes.

He told reporters in Lagos that, during the Jonathan administration, he neither received oil bloc nor sought government contracts.

Ubah also said the allegation that the Nigerian national Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) was used to siphon crude oil totally N1.2 trillion through Capital Oil and Gas Limited to fund Dr. Jonathan’s campaign was spurious and falacious. He said the falsehood was concocted to rope him and TAN.

He said: “Some fifth columnists are using the current political climate and the anti-corruption war by the Federal Government to blackmail their real and inaginary enemies to score cheap political gains. This invidious war of attrition is inadvertently being promoted in the media by idle and jobless psychopaths who see blackmail as their only means of retaining economic and political relevance. I have no skeleton in my cupboard. The idea of fabricating allegations against a law abiding citizen without facts and substance can erode the confidence of the public reposed in the media.

Reflecting on the activities of TAN, Ubah said: “TAN is a non-governmental organisation that elevated political discourse and activities in Nigeria to another level. No money from government was used in running TAN activities. But, those who are intimidated by the achievement of the public advocacy group have been trying to drag it into an unnecessary controversy.”

The former Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Anambra State also said that the election taught him a bitter lesson, which made him to return to his business.

He said: “After losing the governorship election, I declined to contest for the Senate. I did’t come second. I was given a third position. But, I have since returned to my business.”

  • Watching while supporting

SIR: But for former President Goodluck Jonathan’s display of courage, Nigeria would have boiled after the presidential elections. I give kudos to Jonathan for his statesmanship decision and wish him good luck in his future endeavours.

Now, President Muhammadu Buhari has taken over the mantle of leadership. He is saddled with the responsibilities of steering the affairs of the strongest black nation in the universe for the next four years. He is to lead Africa’s largest economy and world’s most populous black nation till 2019. But the question is; will he lead us right?

The answer to this question will be determined by the way Buhari applies his leadership abilities. He made lots of promises during his campaign and now, it is time to test his ability and integrity.

Buhari, among other things, said; he would exterminate Boko Haram and ensure the security of lives and properties of the Nigerian people. The people’s general promised to create three million jobs annually for the people. He also said, in almost an uncountable number of times, that, he will give corruption a good fight.

The aforementioned are just few of Buhari’s promises. How far can his change agenda go? Let’s watch while we give him our support.

Congratulations to President Mohammed Buhari and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo. I wish them a successful tenure.

  • ‘Why past leaders are not supporting Jonathan

‘Why past leaders are not supporting Jonathan

Former Kogi State Acting Governor Clarence Olafemi is a member of the Presidential Campaign Council of the All Progressives Congress (APC). In this interview with JAMES AZANIA, he speaks about the chances of the party in the North Central state.

The APC presidential campaign rally in Kogi was a huge success. How did you achieve that?

We have no sitting governor. So, we had to carry our cross by ourselves. The whole thing is gone, but we thank God that it was a huge success. I have never witnessed the kind of crowd that I saw in Obajana alone. What I saw in Obajana was about three times what I saw in the stadium. It is unbelievable, even those ones alone vote in Kogi and they are all of voters’ age; forget about the problem of distribution of permanent voters’ card (PVC) cards, I have no doubt that the result of election, come February 14, will be too fantastic in Kogi.

Initially, they were saying Kogi will be only 20 per cent but I told them they should aim at 80 per cent. I have been able to prove my worth, having overseen the conduct of a governorship election in 2008, that we won massively, I have proved that I am a manager of election process, by making sure that I delivered over 80 per cent of the total vote cast to my party, PDP then. There is no assignment you give me you judge me by my result. The next thing you can use in judging me was the decamping. The decamping to APC has never been so successful.

The records are there. The leadership of the APC were so happy. In Kogi, we can get this crowd? There was no sort of insinuation that was not made; they said we rented crowd. Even if we borrowed, we borrowed from PDP and PDP cooperated? Is that not interesting? Even if to say we rented it means that the people we rented they have agreed to be hired. But the truth of the matter was that it was a fantastic success, the decamping was also centred around me, with the likes of Baba (John) Oda who was the leader of the group. He is a leader but the engine room is somewhere, and this one now has proved beyond reasonable doubt that Clarence Olafemi is capable of managing any political activity or structure. My concern is that let Clarence Olafemi not work and some sycophants will go and take the credit somewhere. The only leader ahead of me is Prince Abubakar Audu and he was not around, he came two days to the day. I have to give the credit vintage information because you don’t value what you have until you don’t have it again. I predicted to one of my closest political friends, Barrister Haruna, that there is going to be a Tsunami two weeks to the election and it is happening now. It has not even gotten to two weeks; people are going to start moving because we are tired of the government that is inactive. Why is Ekwueme not supporting Jonathan? It’s in the papers. Why is Obasanjo not supporting Jonathan?

It’s in the papers. Why is Shagari not supporting Jonathan? Why is Babangida saying vote wisely; not supporting Jonathan? Why is Abubakar not? All these are past leaders that are still living by the special grace of God. They know that the country is not the country they wish and whatever is responsible for what is happening today is very unfortunate, its condemnable, that Chad will now be spearheading security safety of Nigeria. Chad! A state in Nigeria is richer than that country called Chad. We have crashed and collapsed the country called Nigeria; economically, politically, militarily, every sphere of this country has collapsed and people are paying lip service.

What were your achievements when you were Acting Governor of Kogi State?

When Clarence got into power as Acting Governor of Kogi State, he left a legacy; he established a college of education, staff and student today over 3,000 are feeding from it. Let everyone who steps into the corridor of power be able to say this is what I have done. We voted in the state house of assembly for state fund to be deducted at source to increase electricity supply in this country. Today, where are we? The money was deducted, the electricity has not come. I was Speaker of the House. I know what I am talking, Today, I spend an average of N8, 000 per day buying fuel and I have three generators in my house, yet I can still go without light. Eight times 30 will give you 240 Today, NEPA is charging me N8, 000. I am saying, NEPA please, charge me N30, 000, charge me N40, 000, but give me regular light, it is better than the diesel I am buying. I went to UK, I spent 31 days for holiday they never took my light and my computer was working on my computer Wi-Fi. Nigeria, Obasanjo gave us a platform for IT but we cannot develop it, we are retrogressing. You go to petrol station in UK that will be manned by nobody but by yourself, you plug your card, you put the nuzzle in your car, as soon as it sells the amount you want to you it cuts off and you go, whether it is 12 midnight, whether it is 11pm, you buy your fuel and you go your house. Our people go there they see them, why are they not able to allow that thing to happen in Nigeria?

My ticket is what make me to enter the airport. I put it on something, once it picks the ticket it opens the gate for me I pass. These are IT and technology base that could revolutionize Nigeria.

How do you respond to allegations by Chief Femi Fani-Kayode that the APC presidential candidate is batting serious health challenges?

Let me just tell you, my problem with Fani-Kayode is that he is the most inconsistent Yoruba politician that we have in Nigeria. He’s the ‘jeun jeun’ kind of politician, he moves by the current. I will not be surprised if tomorrow the good people of Nigeria decide Buhari should be the president and he won that election, he will criticise Goodluck Jonathan as the worst president Nigeria has ever had. So, for you people that are taking Fani-Kayode serious, I don’t take Fani-Kayode serious. I don’t see him as a politician of substance. He knows how to make noise. What has Fani-Kayode been able to electorally change in this country? Nothing. Since 2003 that I have come home to come and play politics are you not able to tell the story of Clarence Olafemi politically? Are you not able to say how he has impacted on the life of the average Kogite? I have a list here, which my lawyer was talking about, of how I have been able to transform the live of Kogites. Fani is an opportunist. Full stop. Is he a medical doctor? Which hospital diagnosed Buhari of cancer? And who told him that the law of nature cannot even make him to be sick tomorrow? Anybody, no matter who the person is, can fall sick. The man who owns the body has said that he only has cold, and in this changing of weather, catarrh and all these things, it is natural in African, in a tropical country. Even my little kid, Princess Tinu Olafemi, she has cold now. Are you going to say she has cancer? Can you be more Catholic than the pope? Anybody who is reckoning with Fani is wasting his time. He is an unnecessary distractions at these age of our election. He cannot gain any vote for Jonathan.

There was a time the Kogi Elders Forum wrote a letter to the President that if something is not done to right, there will be repercussions. Your decamping with others, is this part of the repercussions you talked of?

You have mentioned Chief John Oda, you mentioned others, the three of us were part of the six that signed the letter and in fact, they even took us to court that we are not elders from this state and the court ruled that we are elders. You know we did not come back to tell you the end of that judgment? We won. How will you say Clarence Olafemi, who is 64, who has been governor of this state, who has been Speaker of this state, is not a stakeholder of Kogi State? And, how do you define elders? Baba Oda is about 70.

I saw long time ago that the PDP was going to crash. When you see an umbrella that the cyclone is blowing and you say you are looking for cover, I will not stay under the umbrella that is torn. We saw this thing coming and more will come. PDP has collapsed due to mismanagement.

The impression is that you are nursing gubernatorial ambition. Is this true?

Is it a crime for somebody of my age, who has acted as governor of the state to want to contest? Even if I say I will not, you will say I should and do so. Let me tell you, I am going to contest. Look at what is happening in Kogi, where nothing is working and you say that you are happy.  Kwara gets about N200 million per month less than Kogi in terms of allocation but go to Ilorin and see what they have done. The other state you should be thinking about is Nasarawa, go to Nasarawa, go to Niger, go to Plateau; don’t go and talk of Rivers, don’t go and talk of Akwa Ibom; they will say they have oil advantage. My brother, what we have here is a desert, and if some of us do not stand up, our children, children yet unborn will ask us, ‘they said your father was very prominent’, prominent doing what? Looking for what he will come into his pocket. I remain the only Acting Governor that returned over N3.7 billion back to government purse. If I’m looking for how to make millions, I would have made two out of it to my private pocket and leave 1.7 and they would still have praised me. Or, I could have attempt to transform to become the governor.

  • Why we are supporting Buhari, by Arewa group

Why we are supporting Buhari, by Arewa group

A head of next month’s general election, Hausa residents in the Southwest have endorsed the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, as their choice.

The group, “Buhari Campaign Organisation, Arewa Southwest”, cited the growing insecurity as their reason for supporting Buhari.

It urged all northerners in the zone to ensure that they vote out President Goodluck Jonathan and all Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates for Nigerian to get the desired change.

The group’s coordinator, Ali Idris, who addressed people in Lagos yesterday, said they were ready to fight as patriotic Nigerians to ensure future hope and social security.

Idris, who spoke in Hausa and later summarised his speech in English language, said Buhari and the APC will wipe out corruption and insecurity that has forced most northerners to relocate and become carrot sellers in the south.

He urged the people to ensure that they go and collect their PVCs and vote for the APC to secure their future and that of their children.

“Good citizens want change because of PDP’s failure for 16 years. No peace, no economic growth, no employment, nothing. This is not what we want for our country. They are trying to break this country, but it will not work. Nigeria’s strength is in its unity. There is no country like Nigeria,” Idris said.

Also speaking, Umar Mohammed expressed displeasure that the President has not shown concern nor visited victims of terror attacks and their families.

He said: “How can a President, who leads about 200 million people, not be concerned that some of his people are being killed? He has not for a day, gone to visit the victims. He has not secured the house. He is inhuman and we do not want him.

“We want all northerners in the Southwest to vote for only Buhari and the APC. The wind of change is blowing. People know that the PDP government has failed and even PDP members know that they cannot win this election. They will no longer be in power again.

  • RenCap: Banks not supporting agric

Balance sheets of banks are not being deployed to support the real sector of the economy, especially agriculture, Renaissance Capital (RenCap), has said.

The investment and research firm, said agriculture is among the least contributors to the banks’balance sheet, while major contributors to the industry loan book are the manufacturing, telecoms and general commerce sectors. The report highlighted that agriculture accounts for only one to five per cent of credit, yet it accounts for 40 per cent of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The report tagged: ‘Nigerian banks – Loan books under the spotlight’, said the lesnders’ balance sheets bear little resemblance to the real economy.

It said concentration risk remains high, although there are material differences between the banks. “We measure concentration as the weighting of the top four sectors in the total loan book. On this score, Zenith Bank has the lowest concentration, while Access Bank has the highest,” it said.

RenCap said non-performing loans (NPL) ratios have fallen significantly post the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) clean-up in 2010 and 2011. As a result, the firm raised fears that the current trend of below-average impairment charges could persist throughout 2013.

This, it said, will boost earnings and returns considerably above their long-term averages in the short run, adding that the impairment charges may begin to normalise in 2014.

RenCap, however, placed buy on Zenith Bank, GTBank while it highlighted that in tier 1 banks, Access Bank has been a recent laggard in terms of stock performance, but still placed a buy rating on the rating. Within the tier two banks, Skye Bank was picked as a preferred stock, and also got a buy rating.
