  • I am sure of victory, says Osun APC candidate Basiru

The senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Osun Central, Dr Ajibola Basiru yesterday said he’s sure of winning tomorrow’s election.

In a statement by his media office, Basiru said: No amount of blackmail and mudslinging will stop us from coasting home to victory.

Apparently reacting to the criticism on his visit to Oodua Peoples’ Congress (OPC) secretariat in Osogbo during his campaign tour, the APC candidate said: “I’ have taken my campaigns to Pastors and Imams and that does not denigrate me from my faith. I am to be a senator to entire Osun Central Senaorial District and so shall it be by Allah’s grace”.

He advised the opposition to nurse the wound of their imminent defeat secretly and stop assassinating his character.

Basiru told the APC supporters to protect their votes by staying around after voting . He said the law permits the electorate to stay at a distance after casting their votes to monitor the ballot boxes and witness counting of votes. He urged them to maintain peace during and after voting.

The immediate past Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice urged APC agents to be on the alert and report any malpractice to security agents on ground. He also advised the security personnel to be neutral in order to enhance the credibility of the electoral process.

He stressed the need for voters to use their index fingers to print the ballots in order to avoid void votes. He also told voters not to allow themselves to be disenfranchised on the excuse that the smart card reader machine could not recognise their fingers.

He said: “If you are duly registered and possess the Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) you should insist on being screened again and again until the machine brings out your data. Tell the presiding officer that it is your right to vote.”

He advised women to clean their fingers of the local paint called “laali” before going to the polling units on the day of election.  He said failure to remove the paints may suggest they have voted when they have not.

  • Oyo PDP candidate ‘sure of victory’

The Oyo State candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Seyi Makinde, has said the party will win next year’s governorship election.

He said: “The people of Oyo State will vote so massively for me that any plan to rig the March 2, 2019 election will count for nothing.”

Makinde spoke at the weekend on a popular radio programme, Crossfire, hosted by Fresh FM 105.9 in Ibadan, the state capital.

The Director of Communication and Strategy of his campaign organisation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, quoted Makinde as saying that the 2015 mishap, which gifted victory to the All Progressives Congress (APC) with only 33 per cent of the total votes, cannot happen again.

The PDP candidate said this is because the scenario had changed and the party had become stronger, more peaceful and acceptable than the ruling party.

Makinde criticised the state government for building and rehabilitating a few roads in the cities with billions of naira while neglecting what he called 80 per cent of rural and feeder roads.

The PDP candidate said hinterland roads, which serve as conveyors of farmers’ proceeds into the cities, were neglected.

He wondered how a government would feel comfortable leaving the 65-kilometre Ibadan/Iseyin road and other agriculturally strategic roads in their present conditions for nearly eight years.

  • I’m sure of victory, says Fayemi

Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi has said he is sure of a landslide victory at the June 21 governorship election.

Fayemi, who is running on the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), spoke in Ilawe-Ekiti during his campaign tour to communities in Ekiti South West Local Government Area.

On the governor’s campaign train were his wife, Bisi, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Dr Adewale Omirin, Chief of Staff Mr Yemi Adaramodu and members of the state’s executive council.

Other communities visited by the governor’s campaign train include Ogotun and Igbara-Odo. The governor also visited the palaces of traditional rulers where he received royal blessings on his re-election bid.

Members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Ekiti South West Local Government Area also pledged their support for Fayemi’s re-election bid, citing his various incentives for their members, the latest being the elevation of principals to Grade Level 17.

Also, Mrs Fayemi has revealed that the government was set to increase the number of elderly citizens who benefit from the N5000 monthly social security scheme.

The wife of the governorspoke at Igimookongo community in Ado-Ekiti Local Government Area in continuation of her empowerment visit to Ekiti farmsteads at the weekend.

She said her visit to the farmsteads, which had already covered 11 of the 16 Local Governments of the state, was also used to compile a fresh list of citizens above 65 years of age.

The governor’s wife assured the enrollee that the government was poised to start paying them the N5000 monthly allowance from the end of April to make ends meet.

To date, more than 20,000 citizens above 65 years are benefitting from scheme, which Governor Kayode Fayemi inaugurated in October 2011 in line with his electioneering promise.

Fayemi’s wife said: “As I move round the farmsteads we are compiling a new list of elderly citizens for inclusion in the social security scheme. They will start to receive their money by the end of this month (April).

“The government under the leadership of Dr. Kayode Fayemi is committed to putting smiles on the faces of the elderly citizens. I urge you to return him to office with your votes in the June 21 election and more benefits will follow.”

The governor’s wife cautioned politicians to eschew violence in the build up to the June 21 governorship election.

She challenged those jostling to unseat her husband from the Oke Bareke Governor’s Office to go about their electioneering without unleashing violence on their perceived opponents.

Mrs Fayemi advised the governorship candidates to go to the electorate with their manifestoes under a peaceful atmosphere and leave the people to decide who they want to govern them in the next four years.

“In 2003, Ekiti could be likened to a Toyota car that can be driven by every Tom, Dick and Harry. But through the visionary leadership of Fayemi, Ekiti is now a Rolls Royce that cannot be driven by all-comers,” she said.

Mandela Challenge: Mba sure of victory

Super Eagles striker Sunday Mba is confident Wednesday’s Mandela Challenge Cup fixture against South Africa will end in favour of Nigeria as he is not bothered about Gordon Igesund’s squad.

Igesund on Tuesday named his squad to confront the Eagles in the Nelson Mandela Challenge at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, South Africa. The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner said there is no reason to worry as regards the players in the Bafana Bafana squad.

“Of course, there is nothing to worry over the names the South Africans will parade against us during the Nelson Mandela Challenge, I’m cool and at home with the names. It’s a friendly game but the build-up to the game underscores the fact that there is nothing like friendly in football any longer, every game is as important as the World Cup final,” he told supersport.com.

“We know it won’t be easy in South Africa more so against the Bafana Bafana because everybody wants to win against Nigeria and go down in history as the side that defeated the reigning African champions.”

“I see the encounter as a game we must win, our pride is already at stake, so I believe we’ll prepare very well and on matchday come to the party to prove further to doubters that our victory at 2013 AFCON was not a fluke, rather well deserved.”

Mba scored the match winner for Nigeria against Ivory Coast at the 2013 AFCON.

The Super Eagles are expected to hit camp on August 11 in Abuja preparatory for the high-profile international friendly which doubles as build-up for the side’s 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying last group match against the Flames of Malawi in Nigeria on September 7.
